1 The Dive Club Volume 28, 4 Inside this issue: Long Island, New York April 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE President s Message March Minutes Birthday wishes Front 2 Spring is here, this years Beneath The Sea trade show is now in the books and our eyes are now focused on this seasons diving. I know some members who are ready to start now, even with the water still in the 40 s. The water should be warming enough by then for most people to partake. Then in May we will be off and running with beach dives, including our Kick Off Dive & BBQ, a Wreck Dive, and our first Camping weekend which also includes credited beach dives at the camp site. Our Wednesday Night dives will start on the first Wednesday after Memorial Day and continue thru the fist Wednesday after Labor Day. (Please see page 4 for a complete schedule of events). Let me give one more plug for our trip to North Carolina. If you have been there to dive, you know how spectacular the diving is. If this will be your first trip I guarantee you will not be disappointed. We have our own boat reserved and still have five spots open so sign up now and do not miss out on the trip. This months meeting is Artifact Night. This is always an enjoyable night so bring in your artifacts and stories for everyone to enjoy. I will leave you with one last thought. 2 Volume 28, Issue 4 Minutes from the March Meeting Meeting was called to order at 8:12 by president Steve Burton. Minutes were read by June Dawson and accepted. Steve Burton gave a report on beach dives: April 30 at Ponquogue Bridge HT 12:30; May 13 at the bridge HT at 10:40am. Kick off dive and BBQ is May 21 at 11:00am. Wreck diving report by Mary Davis: May 28 is an inshore dive on the Sea Hawk: June 11 on the Halftime and August 13th to the Oregon on the Sidekick. See Mary if interested. Mary also mentioned that Jerry Kinkaid and Ken Murphy will be doing an informal bottle dive on their boats on May 20th Bruce Russo reported that the first camp out is Memorial Day weekend. Please see Bruce if interested. Renewals are due by March 31. After that anyone must renew as new members. Still looking for suggestions of charities. So far we have the US Coast Auxiliary and PAL. Linda Gotti announced that she and Savie are going on a Black Water Dive hunting for Megalodon Hunt in April. There are still spots open, see Linda if interested. Dive leaders were recognized and awarded with gift certificates to local dive shops. Wed. night dives went to Bob Hecht and Lou Guardino with 8 dives: Wreck Dive winner was Jerry Kinkaid with 16 dives and a tie for beach dives went to Erin Jackson and Mike Mack with 18 beach dives each. Guest speaker for the night was Bob Rusnak who presented a program on diving with the sharks at the Riverhead Aquarium and some film clips off some deep oil wrecks. 5 Volume 28, Issue 4 The Dive Club Page 5 Florida Keys Diving trip / adventure! By Richard & Maureen Porgueddu We left on Friday 2/17 at 3:00 pm after setting all of our affairs at home and work. We had our car loaded with all of our camping and SCUBA gear and drove straight through until we reached Looe Key Reef Resort on Ramrod key just outside of Key West. The drive took us around 27 hours I slept from 3pm to around 9pm and resumed driving while Maureen slept. We traded on and off and kept driving until we reached the resort. Unfortunately, there was an issue with our room which left us scrambling after a 27 hour drive to find a place to stay in a fully booked Key West! We managed to find a room at the Inn at Key West where we had a wonderful Margarita by the pool bar before we rested to enjoy our vacation. On Sunday 2/19 we dove with Lost Reef Adventures in Key West where we did a two tank dive on the Vandenberg. We skipped the afternoon reef dives so we could set up our campground where we stayed at Boyd s campground which was on Stock Island, just off Key West. On Monday 2/20 we dove again with Lost Reef Adventures in Key West and we did a one tank dive on the Vandenberg again and another one tank dive on the Cayman Salvager. That afternoon we did a two tank reef dive with the same dive shop. On Tuesday am we checked out of the campground and made our way back up to Ramrod key and dove with Looe Key dive resort (yes, same place we had the room problem with, this time the dive reservations were wonderful). We did a two tank dive on the Adolphus Bush. This was a wonderful Wreck Maureen and I thoroughly enjoyed, it s small enough to experience on one tank, but all the action seems to be near the stern where there is a lot to explore. We paid our respects to the resident goliath grouper and at one point Maureen and I became tangled in some fishing line and had to use our cutting tools for the first time in earnest. I untangled Maureen and in the process became so wrapped up in it we had to cut myself free. That afternoon we also joined them for a double tank reef dive. On Wednesday 2/22 we were hoping to dive with Abyss dive center in Marathon to dive the Thunderbolt and a night dive, but do to torrential rain and winds all dives were cancelled this day. We had to batten down the hatches, the wind was so strong we had to take down our dining fly and our tent was really being blown on hard. We just waited it out under a nice pavilion area in the campground and filled out our dive books. That evening it settled down and we have a nice evening on the campsite. Thursday 2/23 we checked out of the campground and into the wonderful resort Atlantic Bay in Key Largo. Since winds were still rough we decided along with Captain John at the HMS minnow to cancel diving that day. We enjoyed the wonderful resort and had a wonderful dinner at Sunsetters on Key Largo.

Maureen and I were the only divers on the small six pack boat and had a wonderful personalized experience. We were able to get to the wrecks first and were finishing our dives as the other boats started showing up. We did a three tank dive with the HMS minnow. We dove the Bibb first and then the Duane. Then we did a shallow (air) reef dive Saturday we were supposed to start home, but since we missed two days of diving and the weather was so perfect we opted to leave a little later and dive again with Captain John. We did a dive on the Spiegel Grove which was also a favorite wreck of ours lots of penetrations with ambient light filling as far as you can see. We again were the first boat here and 4 other dive operators were splashing as we were ending our dive. After that we opted to leave the melee and do a shallow dive on the Benwood. We then showered in the pool shower (dive boat had access to local resort pool) and drove home. We stopped in GA for an overnight and were home by 10pm Sunday night. Since we drove, we took all of our own gear tanks and weights too. Our HP Steel tanks we had filled with Nitrox for the deeper wreck dives and rented aluminum tanks for the reef dives. All of the dive shops were accommodating in filling our tanks and helping out with our gear. Of all the dives our favorite was the Adolphus bush (sunken curtesy Anheuser-bush for recreational divers) and diving in Key Largo. We just loved the HMS Minnow. Captain John was a pleasure to dive with and a true professional, he knew the waters like the back of his hand and was even able to give us navigation landmarks and compass headings from memory on the reef dives which were right on the money. We loved the personalized service and small capacity of the boat. We could explore the Spiegel grove all day. We were disappointed that we missed diving in Marathon. When we go back staying at the Atlantic Bay Beach resort and diving with the HMS Minnow will be at the top of our list and perhaps a drive down to Marathon just to check that site off our list. It was a great trip and we fully recommend it, we will be back for sure.

11 Volume 28, Issue 4 The Dive Club PAGE 11 Shallow Diving 1) One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth he was with no scuba gear on whatsoever. The diver went below another 10 feet and the guy joined him a minute later. The diver went below 15 more feet and a minute later the same guy joined him. The confused diver took out his waterproof chalkboard and wrote, How the heck are you able to stay under this deep without equipment. The guy took the board and chalk, erased what the diver had written and wrote, I m drowning, you moron. 2) Two divers surface after a long, deep dive. As their heads pop out of the water, a squad of jets (called Buccaneers in South Africa) flies low above their heads. The one diver puts his hands over his ears and shouts, It s those Buccaneers!!! To which the other replies, Yeah, mine are hurting too! 3) Three instructors and their students are on board a dive boat in the middle of the ocean. There is a NAUI instructor, a PADI instructor, and an SSI instructor. Everything is going fine until the boat springs a leak and starts to sink. The SSI instructor says to his students, Okay, we re in the middle of the ocean, so we might as well do our deep dive. The NAUI instructor says to his students, Okay, we might as well do our navigation dive, so let s get our compasses out and swim towards shore. The PADI instructor says to his students, Okay, for $25 extra you guys get to do a wreck dive! *** Please note: The Dive Club does not endorse any of the previous quotes, but will take responsibility for any smiles. They will be driving down on April 10th then diving on the 12th and 13th. They are going on a six pack boat and have 4 spots open at this time. If interested contact either Linda or Savie. July 17th-21st, 2017, North Carolina Dive Trip (Olympus Dive Center, Morehead City, NC) Sign up now to reserve your spot. Membership New Members Dues will remain the same. $35 for individual and $45 for family (all living at same address). Renewals will begin November. Dues will remain the same at $25 for individual and $35 for family (all living at the same address). If you renew by December 31st, you will receive a $5 discount. January thru March, the dues will be the regular renewal price (no discount). If you have not renewed by March 31 you will no longer be a member and will have to join as a new member.
