34 Professional Faller s Code As a professional wildland firefighter and a Protection certified Faller, you have agreed to adhere to an industry-wide code of practice. The purpose of the code of practice is to provide practical guidance and to summarize standards of safe work procedures in hand-falling work. A Professional Faller recognizes the hazards that he or she encounters, and understands his or her own limitations regarding skills, knowledge and experience. The Professional Fall wears and uses the appropriate PPE, including radio if used, whistle and first aid kit at all times and ensures that this equipment is properly maintained. The Professional Faller ensures and maintains good mental and physical well-being. The Professional Faller plans before falling, is involved in the initial safety meetings and uses safe work procedures to enter any active falling area. The Professional Faller uses safe work procedures when in the field, including procedures for regularly checking the well-being of fallers and transportation of fallers. The Professional Faller knows and uses emergency and evacuation procedures. The Professional Faller uses well-maintained tools and equipments, including the correct size of axe for the job and the use of wedges. The Professional Faller chooses a suitable chainsaw and bar length for the task and timber type, including ensuring the chainsaw meets CSA standards. The Professional Faller maintains the chainsaw for the task, including chainsaw filing and tensioning of chain. The Professional Faller can safely use and handle the chainsaw for the task, including appropriate use of the chainbrake when starting the saw, carrying the saw in and out of the falling area, from tree to tree or for bucking jobs. The Professional Faller limbs and bucks logs safely. The Professional Faller recognizes adverse weather conditions, and knows when to stop work and leave the area according to safe work procedures. The Professional Faller anticipates falling results and plans accordingly before making any falling and bucking cuts. The Professional Faller uses safe work procedures when preparing to fall, including conducting site assessments and preparing the surrounding area. The Professional Faller uses safe work procedures when falling, constructs and uses escape routes, uses appropriate undercuts and backcut, uses axe and wedges, maintains directional control, and uses correct body positions to reduce fatigue and prevent injury. The Professional Faller will recognize dangerous falling practices and plans to avoid them. The Professional Faller follows safe work procedures and uses special falling techniques when falling in difficult situations, including up slope falling, heavy leaners, pushing/limb tied trees and dangerous trees, falling against the lean, small diameter trees, short stubby trees and re-falling cut up trees.
