2 Fall 2018 Class Schedule September Stand Pipe Operations September 19 Stand pipes are being found more often in many types of buildings and special locations. Many fire departments don t give much thought to them; however, stand pipe operations often involve some of the most complex operations for a fire department. Intricate hose lays, proper hydraulics and hose movement inside the stairways all require discipline and coordinated operations. This program will review what we as firefighters and officers need to consider. The program is lecture and hands on in nature. PPE / SCBA will be needed Hours: 4 Understanding Flow Paths September 24, 26 The buildings that our fire departments respond to vary in construction types and layout. The contents of the building we fight fires in have changed dramatically in recent years. Recent scientific studies have shown that we as firefighters need to understand how the fire is burning and what it can do in the building we are operating in. To control the movement of the fire we can do several things. One of the subjects that we need to have an understanding of is flow paths. Flow paths can be defined as the movement of heat and smoke from the higher air pressure within the fire area to all other lower air pressure areas both inside and outside of a fire building. This class will help the firefighter and fire officer understand this new information and how we can help control the fire until it can be extinguished.

3 Water Tender Operations September 26, 29 This course is divided into 2 Sessions. The first Session consists of 4 hours of lecture. The second session will be 8 hours of combined lecture and hands on. This course is designed for the basic firefighter, tanker operator, engine operator, as well as the company officer. This course is designed to teach the student the various terminology, theories and methods associated with tanker operations and how to properly implement and manage these operations effectively. Students from departments with water tenders will be asked to bring apparatus to the hands on portion of the program. Prerequisites : NJDFS Firefighter 1 Hours: 12 Drill Ground Instructor September 29 This New Jersey Division of Fire Safety course is designed to ensure that Fire Service Instructors know and understand the safety issues inherent in each of the subject areas of firefighter training. Instructors must be capable of demonstrating the proper methods of identifying and correcting an unsafe situation as it occurs. Instructors must also demonstrate a knowledge of equipment and apparatus maintenance and safety procedures since well maintained equipment is necessary to do the job safely and effectively. This program is required for fire service instructors that wish to teach specified modules in the Firefighter 1 & 2 course in the State of New Jersey. It is also a good program for company officers who plan on conducting FD drills to attend. This course will provide the student with a basic understanding of live burn and SCBA safety concerns.

4 October F.A.S.T. TEAM OPERATIONS October 1, 3, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 27 This Ocean County Fire Academy course is intended to train the local firefighter in Firefighter Assist and Search Team Rescue. The course focus is on the actual rescue techniques highlighted in the F.A.S.T. Team Awareness program. Students will work on individual and group rescue scenarios. This course is physically demanding and is hands-on in nature. PPE / SCBA and spare bottle will be needed for hands on portions of the program. Students from departments that have an existing FAST team will be given priority seating in this class., active firefighter for 3 years, F.A.S.T. Awareness Hours: 32 Large Area Searches October 11, 13 This 12-hour class is broken into lecture and hands-on portions. Large areas are found in a variety of buildings from warehouses and commercial establishments down to areas of single-family dwellings. This program will help you understand the challenges that you will encounter with this type of search and give you an opportunity to encounter it under a controlled environment. PPE / SCBA will be needed for the hands on portion of the program., SCBA qualified. Hours: 12

5 Response to Common Emergencies (New Class) October 15, 17 This program will offer a comprehensive and tactical examination of responses to what are commonly deemed to be routine emergencies. The program will assist new firefighters, and those aspiring to advance in rank, with the handling of common emergencies under several different circumstances. Students should bring turnout gear, SCBA and a spare bottle for the second class. Flashover Train the Trainer October 18, 25 Today's firefighters are at an increased risk of serious injury or death as a result of flashover. This hour program is designed to develop a fundamental understanding of fire behavior as it relates to the flashover phenomenon. Instructors will be able to directly observe the signs of impending flashover under live fire conditions and learn how to express this to students. Instructors will be taught and have the opportunity to practice techniques designed to limit or delay the flashover process. This program encompasses both classroom as well as live fire training. Instructors will be required to go through a minimum of four flashover sessions acting in all instructor positions at least once. Instructors will be required to bring a full set of NFPA compliant turnout gear (helmet, hood, coat, pants, boots and gloves) as well as a complete NFPA compliant SCBA. Instructors are required to wear long pants under their turnout gear during this live fire training. All turnout gear will be inspected and approved by the Instructor s prior to participation. Prerequisites: NJ Division of Fire Safety Firefighter 1 Certified, NJ Division of Fire Safety Fire Instructor level 1 or 2 certification with Drill Ground Instructor

6 Ocean County Strike Team / Task Force Leader October 22 This course was designed to familiarize the student with the roles and duties of a strike team or task force leader responding to incidents as part of the Ocean County Forest Fire Action Plan. The information presented will help you to understand your department s role in this type of event. Topics will include: A review of the current version of the plan The command structure used. How staging and demobilization work. Forest Fire terms that might be used. Building / Structure triage. Preparing the property to be defendable. Attendance at this program is a prerequisite for a fire officer to be selected to act as a Strike or Task Force Leader in Ocean County. Current fire chiefs and fire officers will be given preference in seating, followed by former chiefs and officers and then firefighters. Hours: 4 Basic Pump Operations October 24, 27, 31, November 3, 7, 10 This program gives firefighters the basics needed to properly operate a pump and a fire department engine. The program is based on the IFSTA Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook. Students will leave the program with the knowledge of how water is supplied and distributed on the fire ground. The class is both lecture and hands- on in nature. All students will be required to pass a written exam at the completion of this program. Hours: 36

7 November Fire Officer November 5, 7, 10, 13, 17, 19, 21, 26, 28 December 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 17,19 This program is designed to prepare the participants to obtain the Fire Officer I and II certification under New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Fire Officer Regulations. The course also meets the objectives of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications., Current or sitting Fire officers may be given preference. Hours: 64 HAZ-MAT Operations Refresher (New Class) November 5, 7, 14 This course is designed to refresh firefighters and officers with hazardous materials information necessary for personnel responding to an incident. The course will cover Awareness and Operations material, which are vital to an understanding of how to handle the situation for firstarriving units and to assist you in communicating your needs to the Haz-Mat team. Hours: 12 Calling the MAYDAY November 13, 15 This eight-hour course requires the students to meet the psychomotor skill requirements to call a Mayday over their radio system. The firefighter must demonstrate the ability to call Mayday under various emergency situations. These conditions will be simulated using various props with the firefighter in full PPE, SCBA and portable radio in a blacked out face mask. The firefighter must send the mayday using whatever method is authorized. It must be received over the radio system and then acknowledged. The firefighter must perform these skills at the master level (meaning 100% correct). PPE / SCBA will be needed for the hands on portion of this program

8 IMS 300 November 19, 21, 26, 28 December 3, 5 This is a 24-hour intermediate course presenting IMS modules Topics include organization and staffing, organizing for incidents / event planning. This class meets the NJDFS educational requirements for Level 2 certification., Students must have current or past officer experience. Hours: 24 Note: This is not a tactics and operations class. A Division of Fire Safety certificate will be issued upon completion of this course.

9 December Portable Radio Operations for Interior Firefighters and Officers (New Class) December 10, 12 Firefighters utilize portable radios on every incident they respond to. How often do they train real world and actually utilize PPE? Do we understand the capabilities and how to properly utilize the portable radios we use? This course will look at training and usage of Portable Radios from the firefighter s perspective and not that of a Command Officer. This class will be 2 evenings of lecture, classroom, hands-on, and practical exercises. Attendees will need to bring PPE, SCBA and Portable Radio (preferably Ocean County but we will work with what you bring) as they utilize it, strap, holster, speaker mic, etc. and a spare battery if possible, also Fire Company Radio SOG/SOP Strip Mall Fires December 13 A strip-mall will pose significant challenges to us. Everything from the age of the building, the construction, the fire load and building access is site-specific and must be considered by the Incident Commander to formulate a plan of attack. This classroom based program was designed to help raise the awareness of both the firefighter and Fire Officer about the inherent dangers associated with fires in this type of occupancy. Hours: 4
