1 Galva Fire Department SOP GENERAL REGULATIONS All firefighters must know and understand the SOG s set forth by the GFD. GFD personnel will be alerted of a call by pager, fire phone or by the fire siren The consumption of alcohol is prohibited on fire apparatus or in the apparatus bay. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages in the fire station or on fire dept. property is prohibited. No member who has consumed alcoholic beverages within two hours of an emergency call will drive or operate any fire department vehicle. The apparatus bay will be kept clean and orderly at all times. Apparatus are not to be used for personnel reasons. No equipment shall be removed from the fire apparatus or the fire station without permission from the chief. Respect the privacy of the citizens at all times and observe HIPPA laws. No comments should be made about the alarms outside of the fire department. No members of the GFD will talk to the media except the Chief or the officer in charge. Firefighters are expected to conduct themselves as professionals at all times with respect to the GFD. Firefighters must be familiar with the fire station, fire apparatus and equipment. Firefighters must respond (when available) to all calls. Firefighters injured responding to, from or at the incident must report to the chief immediately. Firefighter Training Requirements Firefighters must make an honest attempt to attend all fire training, fire meetings, apparatus detail and other department activities. Firefighters must participate in 25 hours of training per year either within this department or outside this department. Yearly training; Blood borne pathogens Hazards Materials Awareness

2 SCBA fit test TURN OUT GEAR Firefighters are responsible for the equipment issued to them. Firefighters must have full turnout gear on (helmet, coat, pants, boots and nomex hood) when responding in the correct unit for the call or designated by the officer in charge. All members must keep their gear clean, in good condition and report dam age gear to the chief or officer in charge. No alterations should be made to the turnout gear unless authorized by the chief. Members are responsible for the communication equipment issued to them. Pagers and radios should be kept charged and in good working order. Full turnout gear must be worn at all extraction incidents or training. Reflective vest must be worn when working on highways, rural roads and city streets. If body fluids exist latex gloves must be worn. RESPONDING TO ALARMS Firefighters responding to the station for a call should do so with blue lights activated and must obey all traffic laws of the State Of Illinois. Reckless driving will not be tolerated. Responding emergency vehicles must obey all traffic rules and regulations but must not exceed posted speed limits by more than 5 miles per hour. Emergency vehicles must use lights and siren when responding to an emergency call unless the officer in charge deems the call a non emergency run. When responding to a call the firefighter must report the truck number and the number of personnel on board to the agency who paged the department for the call. When the Henry County Sheriff s Office pages us for a call in Henry County, contact HCSO on Henry fire frequency. If the call is in Knox Co., contact HCSO first and then contact Knox County on IREACH frequency. When we are paged by Knox County for a call in Knox Co. Contact Knox Co first then contact HCSO. Make your answers short and use common terminology. When responding to a call use Henry county fire frequency to communicate between trucks for directions and other information. The Galva fire frequency or a mabas channel will be used on the fire ground. Report to the officer in charge of the agency who requested mutual aid when you arrive on scene. Upon arriving on scene firefighters will remain in the apparatus until directed by the officer in charge to exit the vehicle. Upon returning from the call, driver and crew will clean and service their apparatus to make it ready for the next call. Report to the chief or officer in charge any damaged or lost equipment.

3 Fuel tanks on the apparatus must not fall below ¾ full. Water tanks must be kept full at all times. Apparatus will be operated by trained personnel only. 4 The rear seated firefighters must don scba s when responding to a structure fire. PASS devices must be activated when firefighters depart fire apparatus. The quadrant system will be used when you arrive on scene. The quadrant system assigns a letter to each side of the structure. The officer in charge will determine the A side, usually the main entrance or front side of the structure. A,B,C and D will be used with A being the front side and moving clockwise from there,b the left side, C the back and, D the right side. The first arriving apparatus must lay in supply hose from the closest hydrant to the scene. Apparatus must be placed upwind and near the front side of the structure. Room must be given for the possible placement of an aerial apparatus. The officer in charge must decide what if any mutual aid departments will be needed. The officer in charge must do a 360 degree walk around on the structure involved. The driver s side rear seat position is water supply. This person is responsible for hydrant connection. The driver (pump operator) must prepare to get the attack team water from the water tank. Water supply must then be established either from the fire hydrant or a drafting tank. If the draft tank is used then a tanker shuttle must be established. The pump operator must then pull enough supply hose off to hook up to the pump intake. The pump operator will then radio the person at the hydrant to supply him with water. The water supply person will then move up to the pumper and help the officer in charge to pull a backup line. Always pull a backup line equal to or larger than the first attack line. The passenger rear and center seat (attack team) will pull the appropriate hose line and proceed to the point of entry. Personnel must bring entry and overhaul tools with them. A minimum 1.75 attack line shall be used on all working fires. The safety officer will have control of the entry point to the structure involved. The 2in-2out rule will be followed when attacking an involved structure. When people are reportedly trapped in the involved structure the search team must use the proper search (right or left hand) or use other information to locate missing people. A primary search is performed first moving quickly through the structure, possibly using information on scene to move directly to the area where the person or persons may be located. The gas and electric must be turned off if possible. The appropriate power company and gas company must also be called. Personnel from the rescue van will be in charge of ventilation. The appropriate ventilation must be performed as soon as possible as directed by the officer in charge. The vent crew will work off a roof

5 ladder at all times. The crew should cut a large enough hole to properly vent the structure. The ventilation crew will ladder the building under the direction of the officer in charge with no more than 2 personnel on the roof at one time. The vent crew must start the saw on the ground and warm it up before climbing the ladder to the roof. The vent crew will don scba s and bring an axe and, or pike pole with them. Additional ladders must be used on building with 2 or more stories to give search and rescue teams and attack teams alternate escape routes. When interior firefighters have exhausted 2 air tanks they will then report to EMS personnel for rehab. Vehicle Accidents When arriving on scene personnel must make sure it is safe and secure from any other dangers. Emergency vehicles must be positioned to protect people working on scene. Reflective safety cones must be placed around the scene to create a safe zone and route traffic around the scene. A fire extinguisher or minimum 1.50 inch fire hose must be deployed at the scene when extrication is being performed. All vehicles must be stabilized and electrical systems secured before extraction can begin. This includes battery cables, air bags and high voltage hybrid vehicles. Be aware of hazard zones around vehicles and approach from safe areas. Always be aware of bumper shocks and hood lifting struts. Be careful of side air bags and rear lifting struts also. Make sure to cover all patients when performing mechanical extrication. When fighting a vehicle fire always approach from a 45 degree angle. Always be aware of bumper shocks and hood or lift gate strut. Hazardous Materials Release Contact agency who paged you for wind speed, direction and temperature. Always stay upwind of scene. If you are able, contact driver or operator to see contents of spill. Use ERG book to see mitigation procedures. Contact appropriate hazmat team for assistance. Retrieve CO detector from rescue van. Carbon monoxide Proceed to the scene in engine 1 for city calls and engine 9 for rural calls.

6 Firefighting must don scba before entering structure. Make sure everyone has safety exited structure. Turn on detector outside structure to warm it up before entering. Locate CO alarm and check CO level, then move to the heater vent and raise thermostat to start furnace. Go to the basement and check the hot water heater and turn the temperature up to start the heater also. Check the vent. Check gas dryer and gas stove for leaks at flexible tubing. Check stove burner pilot lights and oven pilot light. Check all gas connections and valves. It may be necessary to ventilate structure so open the windows and use either the positive pressure or exhaust fan if needed.
