OVERVIEW OF THE CONVAL 10 SERVICE RELEASES CHANGES IN BUILD Fixes of stability issues when exporting calculations Sound level corrections in downstream resistance structures were not taken into account in the other operating points. CHANGES IN BUILD Improved handling for calculation templates User-defined fields have the option whether they should be displayed in the minus view or not. The CONVAL help system was blocked for network installations by a Windows security update. Access is now possible again by updating the CONVAL Client installation. Various problems with changing the display language have been fixed. Small improvements in exporting and printing multiple calculations An additional correction field for the noise reduction by a sound-insulated pipe was added. Nominal pressure ratings with pressure-temperature curves also according to ASME B16.34 were added. DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT The new edition of ISO TR 15377: is supported. "Measurement of fluid flow by means of pressure-differential devices - Guidelines for the specification of orifice plates, nozzles, and Venturi tubes beyond the scope of ISO 5167" Compared to the withdrawn standard the following amendment has been made: Improved calculation of drain holes through the upstream face of the square-edged orifice plate CONVAL checks whether orifices must be provided with an outlet bevel. The uncertainty calculation of orifice plates with drain holes has been corrected. New export templates for pressure relief valves have been added. Extended filter options are available for valve selection During the plausibility check, the maximum set pressure was incorrectly compared with the relieving pressure and not with the set pressure. RUPTURE DISC Extended plausibility check for the maximum allowable working pressure MAWP for calculation according to ASME / API. Improved handling of calculations with a burst pressure below 15 psi PAGE 1
THERMOWELL PRESSURE LOSS PIPE WALL THICKNESS The edition of DIN 2413: is supported. Seamless steel tubes for oil- and water-hydraulic systems - Calculation rules for pipes and elbows for dynamic loads The practical application of DIN EN showed that this standard can lead to wall thicknesses for hydraulic systems that are too great according to many years of experience. It was therefore necessary to define a different calculation method. Compared to the withdrawn standard the following amendments have been made: the scope has been limited to seamless carbon and stainless steel pipes and elbows for oil and water hydraulic systems not covered by Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC the material properties have been changed Scope II Pipelines for predominantly static loads above 120 C Calculation temperature is no longer the subject of this standard (see DIN EN ) CHANGES IN BUILD Possible security issues in the Sentinel License Manager SACC have been resolved by updating to runtime version 7.80 ( ). An error in the conversion of power with the units kj/h, J/h has been fixed. CHANGES IN BUILD Automatic log out from network licenses when inactive. during parameter search Problems with printing headers, footers, and calculation messages are fixed. Administrators have the possibility to prevent the update of device and substance databases as well as the application of license updates. Issues with export to Excel templates are fixed. Addition of design data for pressure and temperature testing for materials of body and pipelines. An issue in the calculation of the outlet velocity of valves with additional stages in the valve has been addressed. Revised reliability analysis of large valves and when using abrasive media DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT The uncertainties in the flow rate table are always calculated with the absolute uncertainty of the differential pressure. Extension of the range for the diameter ratio β of orifice plates according to ISO/TR to 0.23 < β < 0.7. PAGE 2
Revised calculation of compressible media at critical flow conditions according to Richard W. Miller "Flow Measurement Engineering Handbook". The alternative calculation of steam according to ISO 4126 and AD 2000-A2 using the steam pressure coefficient is supported. Addition of design data for pressure and temperature testing for materials of body and pipelines. Revised calculation of discharge conditions for compressible media. TANK DEPRESSURIZATION In most cases, the simulation in the tank depressurization module terminated without result. SHELL AND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER The calculation of the mass flow in the tubes of the heat exchanger when entering the mass or volume flow in the jacket was incorrect under certain circumstances. SUBSTANCE CALCULATION Minor improvements in the calculation of gas and liquid mixtures COM-SERVER New parameter for the COM server to check the standard conformity of thermowells Problems with the registration of the COM server are fixed. Problems with the processing of gas and liquid mixtures have been solved. CHANGES IN BUILD LICENSING Access to license servers via an alias name is possible again. CHANGES IN BUILD EXPORT For PDF export, additionally to the solution integrated in CONVAL 10 also the formerly in CONVAL 9 used CONVAL PDF interface is supported again, which produces higher compressed PDF documents. An issue, which in rare cases prevented the export into the MS Excel-Format, is addressed. - LICENSING The license check of network installations is more tolerant towards short-time connection interruptions. The license search and the port test over IPv6 were improved. An issue, which in rare cases caused a delayed program start with message Sentinel key not found (H0007, is addressed. PROPERTY CALCULATION The calculation of the standard conditions data (density and real gas factor) for substances from the optional thermodynamics package was revised. More reliable check of the triple point temperature for media from the optional thermodynamics package. PAGE 3
Improved behavior at the calculation of very viscous substances in calculations, where the valve size was not entered yet Improved stability in conjunction with downstream resistances STEAM CONDITIONING VALVE An issue with the calculation of the additional working points of water injection valves is addressed. For better comparability with old calculations, the prediction of choked flow conditions in CONVAL 10 with use of the legacy calculation method was adapted to the method of the last published CONVAL 9 version (Build ). PRESSURE SURGE An issue, which led to an access violation when opening the valve selection dialog, is addressed. COM SERVER You can create and edit gas and liquid mixtures with the COM server now. CHANGES IN BUILD STEAM CONDITIONING VALVE An issue, which led to an access violation at the start of the module, is addressed. At the calculation of the residual pressure loss of multi-hole orifices with compressible media, the test of critical flow conditions was not always performed correctly when the number of holes was decreased. Improved forecast of possible piping damage at critical flow conditions The calculation of the pressure loss in the discharge pipe of relief valves has been revised. The pressure loss of short discharge pipes with extensions was calculated too small at compressible flow. However, the calculation of the permissible pipe length - and thus the testing of the standard conformity was correct. CHANGES IN BUILD Language support for English, French, and German (further languages will come) CHANGES IN BUILD Various issues with the print preview and with the PDF export, like for example missing identifiers or wrong font sizes, are addressed. Various issues when changing the program language are addressed. In some cases the option "Gas, dry (Standard conditions)" is missing in the selection list. PAGE 4
Alternatively input of the hole diameter or the number of flow passages of the valve trim with control valves with multi-hole trim design Improved forecast of possible piping damage with resistance structures at critical flow conditions An issue with the calculation of the valve authority (Δp100/Δp0) of valves with resistance structures and compressible media is addressed. Revised reliability prediction for multi-stage valves with compressible media Revised filter mechanism for the nominal size in the valve selection dialog In some cases the calculation of the operating characteristics fails if calculations are performed without thermodynamics package and the mass flow rate qn is entered. DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE FLOW ELEMENT The uncertainty of the discharge coefficient C is estimated for non-standard conditions. Improved accuracy of the stress calculation of orifices with materials, for which not all properties are present in the database The maximum pipe roughness with orifices according to ISO 5167:1995/A1: 1998 were calculated falsely following the ISO 5167 edition of The calculation of the throttle orifice d gives incorrect results in some cases. At calculations with input of the pressure difference Δp following the old calculation method of CONVAL 9 the residual pressure loss Δϖ could not be entered any longer after switching to the new calculation method of CONVAL 10. In rare cases the print-out contained inappropriate messages, which do not arise in the calculation form. Beside the rated mass flow now also the rated volume flow is shown. THERMOWELL The uncorrected fatigue stress limit was not displayed correctly using thermowells with mounting type Socket according to ASME PTC 19,3 TW In very rare cases the natural frequency of thermowells according to DIN was not calculated correctly. RUPTURE DISC Calculation of the reaction force according to API 520 or ISO 4126 CONDENSER Condensers can be designed and calculated not only for saturated steam but also for overheated steam. OVERVIEW OF THE INNOVATIONS IN CONVAL 10 Defaults for calculation standard and pipe class in the program options Flange / tubing dimensions according to ASME B16.5 and EN Extended material database with improved selection options Automatic online update of all device and material databases Revised online help system PAGE 5
PROPERTY CALCULATION The new thermodynamics package consists of three components: FLUIDCAL FLUIDCAL is integrated in CONVAL to perform the calculation of thermodynamic properties from equations of state (fundamental equations in the form of the Helmholtz free energy). This program enables the user to calculate more than 25 thermodynamic properties of more than 70 substances. For a large number of substances the most common transport properties can also be calculated. NIST REFPROP REFPROP is an acronym for reference fluid properties describing a program which calculates the thermodynamic and transport properties of industrially important fluids and their mixtures. The program embeds pure substances and predefined or user defined fluid mixtures and represents the substance calculation with the highest accuracy in this context. GERG 2008 Calculation of mixtures according to GERG The GERG-2008 equation is valid in the gas phase, in the liquid phase, in the supercritical region and for the vapor-liquid equilibrium. Extended calculation of resistance structures Design (automatic) CONVAL calculates all intermediate pressures between the single resistances and optimizes them. Design (specify pressures) Specification of the intermediate pressures and the subsequent calculation of the resistance structure Recalculation (specify Cv) Recalculation of an existing single or multi stage multi hole orifice plate configuration Noise calculation Analysis of the resistances of all operating points Improved sound prediction Calculation according IEC (2015) Calculation of the sound pressure level at each third octave frequency for all operating points Support of body materials with pressure and temperature curves Improved selection of valves with extended filter possibilities Support of liquids containing dissolved gas Improved calculation of super-critical fluids (isentropic exponent ϰ > 1,6) Revised reliability forecast for multi-stage valves Optional input of the distinct mass flows of the liquid and vapor phase for two-phase flow STEAM CONDITIONING VALVE Beside water many other media from the new thermodynamics module can be computed.
