10 Telluride GUIDE Telluride Ski Resort Voted Condé Nast Traveler s no. 1 ski area in North America three years running, the world-class Telluride Ski Resort is also known as the most beautiful place you ll ever ski. The ski resort is unique for its out-the-front-door access from both Telluride and Mountain Village, with two chair lifts and the Gondola within walking distance from anywhere in the town of Telluride and three chair lifts and the Gondola accessible from the Mountain Village Core. In addition, many homes and condominiums are slopeside, offering unrivaled ski-in/ski-out access. The Telluride Ski Resort features 2,000-plus acres of terrain and is serviced by two high-speed gondolas, seven high-speed quads, one fixed quad, two triples, two doubles, two surface lifts and two magic carpets. Runs range from steep chutes on Gold Hill, to gentle cruisers off breathtaking Prospect Ridge, to wide beginner trails on Lift 10, to the mogul fields of Lift 9. The trails are 23 percent beginner, 36 percent intermediate and 41 percent advanced, with the summit of the resort topping out on Revelation Peak at 13,150 feet. There is also expert-only hike- to terrain on Palmyra Peak, Bald Mountain, Black Iron Bowl and the Gold Hill chutes. On average, the ski resort receives 309 inches of snow per season, which translates to lots of deep and dry, pure Colorado powder. 11 TELLURIDE GUIDE The Gondola The Gondola, the only free transportation system of its kind in North America, was completed in November 1996 in order to diminish traffic between Telluride and Mountain Village and to eliminate the associated vehicular pollution. It is a one-of-a-kind transportation link owned and operated by the Mountain Village Metropolitan District. It has been touted as the most innovative transportation system in North America, receiving the Mountain Sports and Living 1998 Design Award for Resort Access Innovation, and being named the 1999 Outstanding Transit Project by the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies. Locals use the Gondola to get to work, children use it to get to school and skiers use it to access the slopes. Traveling from Station Telluride, at the south end of Oak Street, the 13-minute Gondola ride stops first at Station St. Sophia, on the ridgeline atop the ski area, and then in the Mountain Village Core. From there, travelers can exit for the ski school and the center of Mountain Village or hop on a smaller Gondola that connects to the multi-level parking structure in Mountain Village, a grocery store, the post office and Mountain Village government offices. The Gondola has pet and handicap-accessible cabins. Telluride Schools Telluride R-1 School District is one of the topperforming districts in the state and has been recognized nationally as well. Telluride students test scores in the Colorado Student Achievement Program (CSAP) are among the highest in the state. The Colorado Department of Education has named Telluride High School as a school of excellence for each of the last six years and U.S. News and World Report awarded THS a silver medal, one of only 10 Colorado high schools cited by the magazine. Outstanding programs and opportunities for students of all grades include advanced placement courses, specialized mentorships, technology and outdoor education programs and individual enrichment plans for students. Each winter the district partners with the Telluride Ski Resort s Ski and Snowboard School to provide on-mountain instruction as part of the Ski PE program. The district serves more than 900 students and boasts a staff of more than 140 full- and parttime professionals. Preschool and elementary children are taught in a historic redbrick school building located near the center of Telluride. Children ages third grade and up are taught at the newer multi-grade facility at the entrance to the town of Telluride. The multiple-building campus houses the Telluride Middle/High School and Telluride Intermediate School. The facility recently underwent a major expansion that was completed in late There are 13 new classrooms, a new gym, weight room, climbing gym, meeting spaces, new science labs and teacher workrooms, as well as more space for administrative offices and the cafeteria. Outdoor work included a new playground and playing field. Telluride Mountain School & Montessori Program Telluride Mountain School and Montessori is a non-profit independent school for preschool through 12th grade. The school is accredited by the Colorado Association of Independent Schools and has approximately 100 students and 25 teachers and staff members. Class sizes are small and outdoor education trips are offered for all grades. The Mountain School also offers a high school Ski Academy in partnership with the Telluride Ski & Snowboard Club. 12 TELLURIDE GUIDE Telluride Golf Club The Telluride Golf Club was constructed in 1992 and serves as a private club for its members, as well as a public course for locals and guests. Surrounded by towering thirteen- and fourteenthousand-foot peaks, the course meanders from Mountain Village s entrance to the back door of The Peaks Resort, where the pro shop is located. From May to mid-october, golfers play from dawn to dusk on the 18-hole, 6,719- yard, par 71 course. Golf carts, equipped with global positioning systems (GPS), assist with navigation of the terrain, while a full practice range, complete with chipping and putting greens, is available. The course also features electronic tournament scoring; clinics and lessons; a halfway house grill restaurant; an ongreen beverage and snack cart; and a full-service pro shop. Medical Care The Telluride Medical Center is currently located in the town of Telluride at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Townsend Street. They provide primary care and serve as a 24-hour Level 5 Trauma Care Center. It has eight doctors on staff and approximately 35 nurses, physician assistants, radiology technicians and administrative personnel. In addition, several visiting specialists provide office hours on a weekly basis. A partner program with the medical center, the Institute for High Altitude Medicine, is run by the renowned highaltitude physician, Dr. Peter Hackett, with an eye toward improving the quality of life for residents and visitors to the region. In 2015, the Medical Center s board announced they would start planning for a larger expanded facility in a new location. We are searching for a site that is accessible for patients, ambulance and helicopter; suitable for current and projected needs; available for future expansion; financially feasible with funding mechanisms; and with a minimal environmental impact, said the board. In addition to the Medical Center, the region also offers two full-service pharmacies, as well as health care services that include alternative medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic care, dentistry, mental health care, occupational and physical therapy, optometry and more. Telluride is also a Heart-Safe community with the installation of 30-plus automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout Telluride, Mountain Village and their immediate surroundings. 12 TellurideSothebysRealty.com

14 The History of TELLURIDE A GEM IN THE ROCKIES PHOTO Telluride Historical Museum The early history of Telluride lies with the nomadic Ute Indians who spent summers in the valley where deer, elk, and bighorn sheep were plentiful and migrated to lower, more hospitable climates during the winters. This centuries-old pattern changed when the first Europeans discovered the San Juan Mountains in the 1700s. Even though the occasional trapper or frontiersman appeared in Telluride s valley, no permanent residents settled until gold was discovered in the late 1800s. No one is sure exactly how the distinctive name of Telluride came about, but it s been speculated to have come from the chemical compounds known as tellurides. A telluride is a combination of metals or minerals like gold, silver, zinc, etc. and that of tellurium. While there are ample deposits of these minerals in the surrounding mountains, in an ironic twist there are very little gold tellurides. One local legend places the name s origination from the send-off phrase to hell you ride in reference to the towns once rough and tumble reputation, but there is little credence to this. Although the town s reputation may have been well-earned. Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank in Telluride in June Cassidy, along with three other accomplices, made off with approximately $21,000 from the San Miguel Valley Bank. Getting to, and more importantly, getting ore out of Telluride was difficult. Otto Mears founded and established the Rio Grande Southern railroad in 1891 and the town began to flourish. The bustling town was home to thousands of residents creating a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. Miners and merchants came to seek their fortunes and the mining boom did, in fact, create a vast amount of wealth in Telluride. By the turn of the century, there were more millionaires per capita in Telluride than in New York City. The mines of the region produced over $375 million dollars of gold by today s standards. Several of the most famous mining settlements of the era, including Tomboy and Alta, can still be visited today. As the town grew, the cabins and shacks turned into elegantly detailed Victorian homes, dignified brick buildings and retail storefronts. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, there has been an incredible effort to maintain Telluride s historic charm. Many of the original buildings, homes and storefronts still exist, creating a unique atmosphere. The iconic brick county courthouse on Main Street is still used today and the Rio Grande Southern Railroad Depot has been renovated into the Ah Haa School for the Arts. After many decades of successful mining, yields on gold and silver began to decline. Mining shifted to other minerals and metals, but could not sustain the once booming local economy. Telluride became like a ghost town. Then, in the early 1970s, entrepreneur Joe Zoline envisioned a ski resort on the slopes of the mountains surrounding Telluride. Five lifts and a day lodge opened in winter of 1972 and the revitalization of Telluride began. Six years later, Ron Allred and Jim Wells purchased the resort and started the transformation into a world-class ski destination with lift upgrades, new terrain, and development of the town of Mountain Village. Over the last 40-plus years, the region has grown into an acclaimed resort destination. Innovative ideas such as the Gondola a free public transportation system connecting Telluride and Mountain Village and creating permanent open space on Telluride s 570-acre Valley Floor has set the region apart. During the summer there are festivals and events nearly every week, from Mountainfilm in May to Blues & Brews in September, earning Telluride the title of the Festival Capital of Colorado. Innovative cuisine from noted local chefs recently earned Telluride the title of One of the Best American Cities for Foodies by Condé Nast readers. Arts, music and theater abound in the small resort town drawing world-renowned artists and crowds from around the world. 16 Welcome to MOUNTAIN VILLAGE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE WAS INSPIRED BY MODERN SKI VILLAGES IN EUROPE Founded in 1986 and incorporated in 1995, the town of Mountain Village was inspired by modern ski villages in Europe with cobblestone plazas, European architectural accents and a mix of residential and commercial structures. At over 9,500 feet in elevation, the town sits on the north end of sunny Turkey Creek Mesa and consists of over 2,100 acres of land. The town s full-time year-round residents number around 1,300, and it has become a progressive community with green initiatives, energy conservation, recycling and sustainable growth.
