1 Cold Weather Operations Open Course At the request of numerous units and organizations, will be conducting an open class for our winter environmental training. The total number of students will be personnel per class. This training takes place in Leadville, CO over a 2-week period. The first week is the military ski program and the second week is team level tactical winter/ski mountaineering training. All training is conducted with unit/organizational cold weather systems and equipment. This allows for teams to vet their current systems. We use Alpine Touring ski or heavy Telemark (locking heal) set ups as this is the norm for all special operations units worldwide and allows for safe, effective over snow movement with combat equipment in all terrain. 1
2 Week one training will cover the following: Cold weather medical considerations Winter survival and emergency shelter construction Proper use of military cold weather clothing systems Ski nomenclature and maintenance Cross country skiing Downhill skiing progressing from beginning skills to skiing with a large pack through variable terrain. Final ski is a black diamond run with large recce pack (beginner through expert). Avalanche rescue training Weather forecasting The Military Ski program will teach: Non-skiers to ski with operational equipment in a safe, efficient manner Intermediate skiers to build solid fundamentals and help make them expert skiers Expert skiers how to become instructor skiers. 2
3 Week two training will cover the following: Equipment prep for Extreme Cold Weather (ECW) Cold weather operations planning Team movement techniques Patrol base set up and operations 3
4 The week culminates with a 3-day tactical movement, usually up a 14,000 peak in the local area (Mt. Elbert, Massive, etc.), weather dependent. The students will plan and execute the movement with the assistance of the cadre. 4
