4 T hinking back to my university days, it is almost unbelievable how much holiday we were afforded. Nearly four months at the end of each year! A keen traveller from a young age, I always tried to make the most of these prolonged breaks. Being an impoverished student, though, meant that any travelling I intended would have to be working holidays. My favourite one of these was to the picturesque Lake Tahoe, California. A group of us acquired our J1 working visas, and set off to Tahoe for a working ski holiday, not knowing where we d sleep on arrival and without any jobs organised prior to departure. Risky, I know. The snow ended up arriving a month late, meaning we didn t have jobs for a month and lived in the dingiest of motels, surviving on Ramen noodles mostly. Desperate times. When the first snow finally fell, all of us soon got jobs Ed s letter richard brown, editor at various lodges at Heavenly Ski Resort, and the fun commenced. We upgraded to a slightly nicer motel closer to the resort, which meant we snowboarded to work and back every day. We also hit the slopes during each break we got, and partied with other internationals who worked at the resort every night. Great memories were made. In SA, we don t get the snow required for serious ski resorts. But one place that gets good snowfall annually, and where you can even ski and snowboard a little, is the magical Matroosberg.
