7 FOREWORD On behalf of the BMD Northcliffe Management committee I wish to present the 69th annual report for you to consider and approve. Having spent a lot more time at the club this year I feel myself getting drawn back into rolling force that keeps this club moving forward. It is truly a special group of people with a great depth of passion and enthusiasm and the results speak for themselves. From the completion arena we have once again achieved the top honour of champion club. Many thanks to all competitors for their hard work and the legend in the making Shannon Eckstein for his 9th ironman series title and 8th Australian Ironman Title. From the beachside, thank you to all patrolling members and support volunteers once again you have protected Northcliffe beach to the level expected of you all. The 51 rescues on our beach is on par with previous years but the 1898 preventative actions which is significantly increased from previous years lets us know that we are dedicated to saving lives. I would like to thank all the members of our committees who put forward their afterhours time to get together and create what we have in the club today. GRANT MURRAY VP - ADMINISTRATION 5 REPORTS

8 GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT On behalf of the staff and management of the Surf Life Saving Club and the Supporters Club, it gives me great pleasure to present my report to the members for the 2015/16 season. Our Club is one of many non for profit Clubs who play an important role in the social and economic fabric of the Gold Coast. The important services that we provide at BMD Northcliffe Surf Club continue to be highly valued by the local community whether it be the educational training that we provide to our local schools, the beach patrols that we do throughout the summer, our Junior Activities program or the facilities that we provide in the Supporters Club for our members and guests. As office bearers and professional staff now start the important process of reviewing and planning during the winter months for the 2016/17 season, it is important to acknowledge another successful year and one that every member should be proud of at BMD Northcliffe Surf Club. As you will see in our 2015/16 membership statistics our membership numbers in the Surf Club were 1094 which was a decline of 30 members compared to the 2014/15 season of There was a small decline in nipper, active senior and associate numbers but strong growth in U17 numbers. Our strategy of bringing members through from nippers to the senior Club continues to show positive results with a 75% combined increase in U15, U17 and U19 members over the past 3 years. This strategy will help ensure we continue to have a steady stream of young lifesavers patrolling Northcliffe beach. The provision of lifesaving services on Northcliffe beach continues to be our key objective and our patrol groups did another outstanding job this season keeping our beach fatality free. A significant amount of work goes into ensuring our beach is safe every season and thanks to our diligent Life Saving Committee, patrol captains and lifesavers along with our professional staff of Caroline and Hayden who help plan and coordinate all of the relevant award training, proficiencies and patrol rosters to ensure we meet all of our patrol obligations. One of the most pleasing results in the Lifesaving section this season is the continued improvement in patrol compliance by our members which has been helped enormously by the proactive and flexible approach taken by Caroline, Hayden and the Lifesaving Committee. In addition to our patrolling obligations this past season we have provided a range of community based surf safe educational services to a number of local schools in our community as well as overseas schools and tourist groups. Our Junior Activities program lead by Peter Van Der Schyff and his Junior Activities Committee has continued to provide fun activities that teach our kids surf skills, surf safety and team work. We have an incredible group of mums and dads who act as age managers, water safety and officials throughout the season and we could not deliver our Junior Activities program without their support. Junior Activities membership makes up 50% of our total membership and the day to day management of memberships, carnivals, nominations, logistics, newsletters etc is a mammoth task which is undertaken by Tiarne Smith our Junior Activities coordinator. I would like to thank Tiarne along with Chris Redler our Head Coach and Courtney Innes, Beach Coach for their hard work this past season and for finishing a very credible 3rd at the Junior State Championships. Our continued success in the Surf Sports arena is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the Surf Sports Committee and the Surf Sports professional staff led by Mark Wally Williams. Wally truly is the driving force behind Surf Sports at the Club and his passion and enthusiasm for his role is infectious. For those of you who witnessed the Club taking out our 13th consecutive Australian Champion Club pointscore at Maroochydore this year, you would have seen some impressive results by the Club none more than Shannon Eckstein winning his eight Open Ironman title. There is no simple formula for our continued success at the Aussies other than a constant review of how we do things, an enormous amount of hard work by our coaching team made up of Gavin Hill, Kevin Morrison and Shannon Eckstein and a truly focused and hardworking Surf Sports Committee. We really do have the best Surf Sports team in the country and we believe we have further strengthened our team for next season with a new enhanced coaching structure which includes Naomi Flood. We are currently reviewing our gear, craft and equipment storage options at the Club for next season and beyond in order to maximise the available space and ensure we have the right storage capabilities in the years to come and I would like to thank members in advance for their patience during these changes which will take a number of months. Of course, all of the services that we provide to our members and the local community as well as our achievements this past season would not be possible without the hard work of our committee members, office bearers, volunteers and professional staff, so a big well done to everyone especially the volunteers. I am especially proud of the professional team at the Club who co-ordinate and provide all of our member services and I would like to thank Lee, Wally, Tiarne, Caroline, Hayden, Karen, Deb and Fiona for all their hard work. A special thank you to Lee Vrolyks who puts this Annual Report for members together every year and patiently and diplomatically reminds Office Bearers, staff and General Managers when they don t have their report to her in time!! The support of our corporate partners and associates must be gratefully acknowledged led as always by our naming rights sponsor BMD and the Power family, our major sponsors Scott & Dean Bradford from QSA, Coates Hire and Michael Wiener for his generous and ongoing support. Sponsorship & fundraising continues to be an integral part of our Club activities and I would encourage all of our members to support our sponsors whenever possible. I would also like to acknowledge the role David Shields, our Sponsorship & Fundraising Manager, has had with building strong relationships with all of our corporate partners over a number of years. Membership numbers in our Supporters Club were 12,811 for the year compared to 12,527 last year and revenues after 11 months are showing a small decline of.9% on last year. The six week kitchen renovation in February and March did have a detrimental impact on revenues, with sales down 21% during this six week renovation period. Food & beverage in general has had a flatter year this year but gaming revenue continues to show strong growth with the implementation of ticket in, ticket out technology which has been widely accepted by our members and guests. Our EBDIT profit is expected to be $2.266m before balance sheet items and just over $2m after. As predicted in last year s annual report, increased costs continue to put pressure on profit margins as there is little room to increase pricing in a very competitive market. We are forecasting for a stronger year in revenues across the board next year as the economy as well as tourist numbers continue to improve on the Gold Coast and 6 REPORTS

9 interest rates remain low. In the last financial year we retired $255,567 of debt in the Surf Club Our beautiful new kitchen opened on the 17th of March and we are very happy with the final result. I would like to thank Chris McIntyre our Head Chef, the Building Committee and especially Grant Murray our builder and Tim Burgess our site foreman who managed the project. Both Grant and Tim are long term members of the Club and did an excellent job. In addition to the kitchen we also divided the smoking deck in the gaming room and created a small smoking deck for our TAB customers with its own entrance from the TAB. The old smoking deck on the beachside of the Club has been made nonsmoking which has been widely accepted by our members. Some initiatives for the year ahead include the introduction of Player Loyalty technology in our gaming room from July 1 where members will receive loyalty points on their membership cards which can be redeemed for cash as well as receiving random prizes through our new member s kiosk at reception. We also have plans to upgrade the external beachside deck to provide a more comfortable nonsmoking area for food and drinks as well as for small private functions. This upgrade will be supported by Carlton United Breweries who also supported us with the installation of our Brewery Fresh Beer Tanks in November and we are the only Club in Queensland to have this Brewery Fresh Beer. We are also replacing the bench seating in the TAB with bench tables like we have under the Brewery Fresh Beer Tanks. Our most important initiative in the year ahead is the appointment of a Marketing Manager at the Club which is a new role for us. Maddy Ellis starts with us in July and brings a wealth of experience with her in marketing successful Clubs in Queensland. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lauren Hinds, our long standing Operations Manager, and the rest of the management team Matt, Tim, Sharna, Medi, Chris, Monique, Lawree, Chris, Thomas and Troy and all of our wonderful staff for their hard work and commitment to the Club. I would like to particularly acknowledge and thank Mike Deane, our Supporters Club President for over 30 years who has decided to step down from his role this year. Mike is one of life s gentlemen and his supportive and humanistic style of leadership made him a pleasure to work with. His contribution to the development of our Supporters Club over three decades cannot be underestimated and we would not be where we are today as a Club without Mike Deane. It was therefore very appropriate that Mike accepted the award for Best Club on the Gold Coast which was awarded to BMD Northcliffe Surf Club at the Clubs Queensland Awards night this year. I would also like to welcome and congratulate Scott Bradford our new President of the Supporters Club who has already shown a real passion, enthusiasm and commitment to his new role and I look forward to working with him in the future. In closing, I would like to thank both the Surf Club and Supporters Club committees for their support and guidance over the past year in particular David Shields, Mike Deane, Scott Bradford and Terry Jackman our patron. We have excellent committees in all areas of the Club which gives us a solid foundation and a consistent approach with everything we do. Thank you and I look forward to the season ahead. 12 PRESIDENT'S REPORT For more than sixty nine years now our volunteer members have kept the beaches of Northcliffe safe and fatality free. With another season of volunteer Beach Patrols completed, it s an opportune time to reinforce the most important responsibility we have here at BMD Northcliffe. That is, to patrol our beach during the season, and to ensure that it is a safe environment for all that visit. Our Surf Life Saving services have once again kept our beach safe, and for this a volunteer service, we thank all our members that performed beach patrols this season. A very special thanks goes to our Patrol Captains that took up that extra level of responsibility and to our Life Saving Committee who have managed their responsibilities admirably again this season. On behalf of all members I wish to thank Tim Burgess, Vice President Life Saving, Jonathon King, Club Captain and Mick Innes & Scott Davies, our two Club Vice Captain s for the tireless work and countless hours on the beach ensuring that our commitment to saving lives is professionally administered. The education of our members has developed significantly over recent years with a professional approach taken under the direction of our Chief Training Officer Katherine McKenzie. Needless to say we believe we have the best trained lifesavers in the country. The success of our lifesaving and education services here at the club are mainly due to the professional and decisive management delivered by our Manager of Lifesaving & Education, Caroline Fildes, our Lifesaving Admin Assistant, Hayden Fraser and the Life Saving Committee. I thank them all for their contribution to the club and its members. Our ever increasing membership is attracted to our club by the facilities and services which we offer here at BMD Northcliffe. Our Junior Activities and Surf Sports programs have been an excellent form of recruitment over the years thus ensuring a steady flow of patrolling members to our club. Our Junior Activities Program had an excellent year with over 330 junior members taking part in a wide range of activities and competitions throughout the season. The Junior Activities season culminated this year with the Under 11 to Under 15 Age Groups competing in the Queensland Youth Championships. Our team placed a very credible 3rd with some great results. A big thanks to Peter Van Der Schyff, Vice President Junior Activities and Chairman of the Junior Activities Committee and all involved on the committee. Thanks to all our Age Managers, their assistant s, water safety, officials, IRB drivers/crew and of course the parents. Most importantly our thanks and appreciation goes to our coaches in Chris Redler and Tiarne for their patience and dedication to our young members as well as our Beach Coach in Courtney Innes. A special thanks to our Junior Activities Co Coordinator, Tiarne Smith who gets herself involved in every aspect of the club, especially Junior Activities. You can really see that Tiarne passionately enjoys what she does. Our Surf Sports program provides our members with opportunities to showcase their skills and talent to other members within our organization and also to the general community. What a season! Winning the Queensland and Australian Champion Club titles for the 13th year in succession and bagging numerous Gold medals at both events. Special mention to Shannon Eckstein for not only claiming his ninth series win in the Kellogg s Nutri Grain Ironman, winning 5 out of the 6 rounds, and then backing up at the Aussies winning Gold in a runaway victory in the Open Ironman event sealing his eight title and becoming the most successful Gold Medal recipient in the history of the Australian Championships with thirty eight Gold Medals to his name. Our Surf Sports program under the guidance of Mark Williams, Director of Surf Sports have together with our coaching staff, continued to keep the 10 REPORTS club at the forefront of Surf Life Saving Competition in Australia and the World for that matter for well over 13 years now. Senior Head Coach Gavin Hill along with Kev Morrison as the Assistant/ Development Coach, worked tirelessly together with tremendous results especially in the younger age groups. The success that the Under 15, 17, and 19 age Groups had at the Queensland and Australian Championships should be credited substantially with the work that Gavin and more recently Kev have done with these members over recent years. I would like to also show our appreciation to our Vice President Surf Sports Damien Moffrey, the Surf Sports Committee, our Team Managers, Officials, IRB drivers/crew, water safety and all our other members and professional staff who have assisted the club during the season in the provision of our Surf Sports Program. Since our Supporters Association (Supporters Club) was incorporated in 1991 it has continued to provide the much needed funds to operate the Surf Club every season. In the last 25 years alone Mike Deane and the Supporters Club Management Committee have donated well over $22 million to the Surf Club. That incredible amount of funds has been spent wisely on a vast array of resources and services for our members and the community. Without that vital support of Mike Deane over so many years we would definitely not be where we are today. On behalf of all members of the Surf Club may I extend our warmest appreciation to Mike, (who has recently stepped down from his role after approximately 30 years) and the Management Committee of the Supporters Club for their continued support. Our Surf Club and Supporters Club professional staff are led by our General Manager Dermot McEnroe who have set the benchmark with regard to the committed approach they take to their daily tasks and responsibilities. Our management team has provided our members with a level of service unparalleled in Surf Club's and is testimony to our success. We wish to thank all our staff but would like to especially mention Dermot, Lee Vrolyks, Mark Williams, Caroline Fildes, Tiarne Smith, Hayden Frazer, Karen Markus, Deb Formosa and Supporters Club Operations Manager Lauren Hinds and all the Supporters Club Mangers and staff. Our Naming Rights partners The BMD Group have been a big part of our club for many years now, with Managing Director and Group Chairman, Mick Power, a member for well over 40 years. This partnership is paramount to our success in the future and is a fine example of how organisations such as ours and corporations such as the BMD Group can benefit the community as a whole. We sincerely thank Mick and Denise Power, the Power family and everyone at BMD for their enthusiastic approach and continued support of BMD Northcliffe Surf Club. Our Club Sponsors and supporters are an integral part of our club and have continued to provide that much needed financial support towards the ongoing operation of our facilities and services. A special thanks to our Principle Sponsor, Coates Hire and their CEO Michael Bryne, and to our long standing Major Sponsor, QSA Financial Services, owned and operated by our Deputy President and Life Member, Scott Bradford, his wife Gen and brother, Dean Bradford. Thank you to Terry Jackman, our Club Patron for his unwavering commitment to BMD Northcliffe over many years. His passion for our club has been instrumental in the success we achieve and his continued involvement will bide us well into the future. In closing I wish to thank my wife Michelle for her continuing patience and understanding in my role here at the club and also to our children Ethan and Macy who have now created their own history through their own surf club life. An enthusiasm I hope we will all enjoy as a family for many years to come. DAVID SHIELDS PRESIDENT

13 MANAGER OF LIFE SAVING AND EDUCATION REPORT First and foremost, a massive thank you to all patrolling members for the enormous amount of time and effort that goes into protecting our beach and continuing to uphold the high standards of the red and yellow. This season as a team we have achieved our aim of zero preventable deaths on Northcliffe beach, due to the efforts of our very vigilant patrolling members. Our patrolling members clocked up hours this season - that is an enormous contribution to our club. Twelve members completed over 70 volunteer patrol hours and seven of our members completed over 100 volunteer patrol hours. I am extremely proud of the efforts of our younger patrolling members (cadets) and the manner in which they conduct themselves. I encourage you all to upskill and take advantage of the courses and training available to you. Get involved and take ownership of your role in the club. Twenty of our members celebrated 10 years or more of patrolling Northcliffe beach, seven of them have chalked up over 15 years. A special mention and thanks to Trent Rowe and Scott Bradford, each celebrating 20 years of patrolling for our club. Thank you to all of the Patrol Captains and Vice Captains for their leadership and accepting any challenges thrown at them. From the outside you could be excused for thinking that the lifesaving operations of our club are a seasonal affair. Maintaining a club of our size requires attention 12 months of the year and we are very fortunate to have a very capable and hard working committee. Their industry knowledge, business acumen, contacts and vocational skills are huge assets that cannot be understated. Many thanks indeed to Tim Burgess, Jonathan King, Michael Innes, Scott Davies, Kathryn McKenzie, Leigh Verner, Peter Tomlinson, Richard Bedford, John Egan, Jayden Burgess, Sam Lyon- Jones and Sally Davies. I would also like to sincerely thank our team of trainers and assessors. The additional time these members dedicate to our club improves the skills and knowledge of our patrol teams and ensures the ongoing operational status of our beach throughout the season. In addition, the professional staff really are the behind the scenes team. Most of them work extra hours, weekends and holidays to ensure our office bearers and volunteers have the resources they require. From weekly operational tasks to strategic directions, their assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you Hayden, Dermot, David, Lee, Tiarne, Wally, Karen and Deb. The service we provide to the community is priceless. Please value your role within our club as without members we would not exist. Take ownership, get involved and be passionate about what we do and why we do it. Please enjoy your break and I look forward to seeing you all back on the beach in September. Thanks for a great season. Caroline Fildes MANAGER OF LIFE SAVING AND EDUCATION 11 REPORTS

Finally we are starting to update our IRB S and motors as well as gaining some more room for storage of this new equipment. 15 CLUB CAPTAIN S REPORT My sincere thanks to all our patrolling members who have ensured that we have achieved another fatality free season. In particular we need to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Caroline Fildes and Hayden Frazer who continually go out of their way to ensure that lifesaving runs smoothly. One of the greatest challenges we face is to continually ensure that each patrol team consists of members with the appropriate awards. We are reluctant to move members between patrols as comradery can be diminished. The solution is to encourage upskilling within each patrol team. I ask that all patrolling members be enthusiastic in their approach to obtaining new awards.your new skills will be a welcome addition to your patrol team and ensure that you continue to enjoy your time on the beach. It has been to privilege to be your Club Captain this season and I thank all our members for the friendly and diligent manner in which they have carried out their volunteer roles. Thank you to Tim Burgess and my fellow committee members for your guidance and support throughout the season. We have had some great new members join our club this season as well as all our existing members up skilling themselves and their families. Thank you for a great season, I look forward to seeing you all down on the beach again soon. KATHRYN MCKENZIE CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER 13 REPORTS

18 RADIO OFFICER'S REPORT Radios play an essential role on patrol, especially in an emergency. We ask that all our members who are trained in radio operations keep up their skills so that when required our radio communication is of a very high standard. Thank you to our patrolling members for taking such good care of the radio equipment during the season. Thankyou to Caroline Fildes and Hayden Frazer for their assistance with the washing of the radios and keeping the radios on charge during the season. PETER TOMLINSON RADIO OFFICER IRB CAPTAIN'S REPORT Again BMD Northcliffe has had a great year both in lifesaving and competition. IRBs continue to be a visible and essential asset in both of these areas. Without them, the beaches are not as safe whether you are a tourist, patrolling member or competitor. Immeasurable assistance is provided by many behind the scenes in keeping our IRBs in good running order and this helps in maximising the irbs life in our harsh beach environment. Often we have IRBs on patrol, at competition and also community events. As always I encourage those interested to attain their crewies or drivers certificates and to those already with these awards, get down whenever you can to keep those skills fresh. Thanks to all for donating your time, be it through assisting with training courses, volunteering at carnivals and being there on patrol ready to go at a moments notice (even if just for a photo with tourists!) Without your assistance, patrols and competitions would not run as well as they do. I hope we continue to build on our success and look forward to the upcoming season. 20 CLUB HOUSE DIRECTOR'S REPORT FIRST AID OFFICER'S REPORT The past season was much quieter than the previous season due in part to the poor weather after Christmas. The majority of treatments were to club members in training or Nippers. Thankfully the spate of suspected spinal injuries was not repeated. The major change in treatment was the removal of hard collars for suspected spinal injuries; this brings SLSA into line with hospital use. This change is welcome and simplifies treatment by members. The quality of First Aiders within the club is extremely high especially given the number of cases treated. My thanks to the Lifesaving staff and the Lifesaving Committee. RICHARD BEDFORD FIRST AID OFFICER This year we have been doing quite a bit of alterations at the Surf Club. If you have been there you would have noticed that all the kitchen area has been upgraded. We spent quite a lot of money and time redesigning the kitchen to make it more chef-friendly and productive. This work is now complete. We also had a big mural on the wall depicting old photos of members of the Club. If you have not already been there to check out if you are on 'the wall' I suggest you come and see if you can find yourself! Downstairs we have rearranged the gear area to get Lifesaving a larger area for all their equipment. They have over double of what they had before, which is a good thing as that is what we are there for. Also, by rearranging the ski and board area we anticipate that we will have a lot more room for members to store boards or skis. This is not completed yet - when it is it will be necessary, if you are wanting a rack, to see Wally (Mark Williams). Any craft that is just put in without a rack allocation will be removed - this is to make sure that all craft that is there is being used - not just a storage area. I recommend that all members come and have a night at the Club to see how the new kitchen area works and enjoy! JOHN GORELY CLUB HOUSE DIRECTOR 18 REPORTS

25 DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS REPORT What a season for our BMD Northcliffe Surf Sports Team. The results below are a credit to all involved. QLD Senior Pointscore Champions (13 years in a row) Australian Senior Pointscore Champions (13 years in a row) 3rd Australian Masters Pointscore 3rd Queensland Youth Pointscore The Australian Senior Championships saw the club travel to the Sunshine Coast and win its 13th Senior Pointscore in a row. Thanks to everyone who helped out over the 9 days of competition. Your support is greatly appreciated. Special mention to Shannon Eckstein who won his 8th Australian Ironman Title, Nik Green winning male competitor of the carnival and Damien Clayphans Reserves and U19 boat crews for winning the Clubs first ever Gold medals in Boats. In the Kelloggs Nutri Grain Ironman Series, the BMD Northcliffe members were again a dominant force. The Club had ten members race throughout the Series. Congratulations to Shannon Eckstein for winning the series again for a record 9th time. The Juniors also had another great season by getting 3rd QLD pointscore. A big congratulations to Chris Redler, Tiarne Smith and Courtney Innes for their efforts. There are numerous people to thank for their contribution to the Surf Sports team. Thank you to all the members of the Surf Sports, Management, Lifesaving, Junior Activities and Supporters Club Committees for their forward thinking keeping the BMD Northcliffe Surf Club the Worlds Strongest Club both in Surf Sports and Lifesaving. A big thankyou to our unsung heroes - the Officials, IRB Drivers/Crews, Team Managers and workforce who unselfishly give up their time throughout the summer for the Surf Sports Team to be able to compete. The entire Surf Sports Team appreciates your help throughout the season and we wouldn t be the most successful club without your help. Thanks to our coaching staff in all areas for your efforts throughout the season. A final Thankyou to the professional management staff for making it pleasure to come to work every day. 26 TEAM MANAGER S REPORT MASTERS TEAM MANAGER S REPORT We should be really proud of our achievements this season as individuals and as a club. The club winning its 13th Australian Point Score Title, more new gold medalists with 13 numbered cap inductees and 13 consecutive Qld Point Score Titles. Shannon Eckstein and Rebecca Creedy winning the male and female Iron titles at the Aussies and the Panda Boat crews winning not only the club s first ever gold medal in the boat arena with the U19s, but the reserve grade crew also winning gold were certainly highlights. Congratulations again to Shannon claiming his 9th Kellogg s Iron Man Series. There is not enough words to describe how good a competitor he is. He dominated the Kellogg s series and he gave everyone a lesson in the final of the Ironman at the Aussies. Next season marks a new direction for Surf Sports for the club, with Shannon heading the High Performance area and we welcome our new open women s coach Naomi Flood. Add Kevin Morrison as Male Coach and Gavin Hill heading our youth program and we are setting the standard for others to chase. We are very lucky having Mark Williams as our Surf Sports Manager. Not only does he go beyond his job description, but he lives and breathes this club and its members. Thank you for everything Wally. You have done a wonderful job again this season. Thanks goes to our team managers, officials, IRB drivers and helpers during the season. Everyone played a part in creating history and helping our competitors achieve their goals. Best of luck to our World Titles Team heading to the Netherlands in September where we will be chasing our 3rd World Title in a row. STEPHEN FRY TEAM MANAGER A mixed year competition wise with a third in the State and a very credible 2nd in the Australian Championships, just 17 points behind the winner Alexander Headlands. As I said a very credible effort as we were down on numbers from last year and it seems that with the problems with Mooloolaba a lot of competitors migrated to Alex. In past newsletters and Annual Reports I ve sought for members to introduce new Master Members and now you can see the reasons why (numbers). Outstanding efforts at Aussies by Lee Vrolyks (7 gold) Tiarne (6) Anna (3) Nicho (2) and Noel skin Kolkka (2) congratulations to all. The Girls were the shining light again scoring most of our points. If we wish to regain No 1 position again we will need a boost in membership especially in the younger male years 30 to 45 plus. Congratulations to Andrew Moore in gaining his first Aussie Gold in 150 yr board relay with Gav and Skin. Full results will appear elsewhere in this Annual Report. Welcome to new Members Jacinta Wynne, Rod McIvor, Damien Jeffery, Michael Chep and Paul Saffigna. A special thanks to Harro for looking after the team at the Aussies whilst Rob and I sailed the Blue Pacific for our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Also thanks to Nicho, Bruce, Gav and Lee for assisting with Team selections a daunting job at best of times. Congrats to the Opens Team for their 13th successive Australian Championship win a truly remarkable feat. Thanks to David, Dermot and the Club for its support of Masters and thanks to Lee, Tiarne, Wally and Caroline for their support throughout the season. Finally after over 20 years this will be my last Annual Report as I m passing the Masters Team Manager baton on. It has been a pleasure to hold this position over these years and both Rob and I have many memories of fun times, comradery, away trips and numerous victories. Rob and I wish the Team and the Club well for the future and can assure all that our hearts will always remain with the Maroon Star. Undoubtedly we will still be seen around the Clubhouse and from time to time will even drop in at a Carnival. HAYDON STOKES MASTERS TEAM MANAGER 24 REPORTS

27 BOAT CAPTAINS REPORT The 2015/16 Season for the BMD Northcliffe Boat Crews has been an exceptional season culminating in the first ever Gold Medals at the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles on the Sunshine Coast in the under 19 and Reserve Grade divisions of Surf Boat racing. This season the club fielded six surf boat crews:- Two A Grade Men s Crews BMD Northcliffe Lightning and the BMD Northcliffe BOMS; One Ladies A Grade Crew BMD Northcliffe Krankitz, One Reserve Grade Crew BMD Northcliffe Thunder and Two Junior Under 19 Crews BMD Northcliffe Hurricanes and the BMD Northcliffe Tornadoes. This in itself was a first for BMD Northcliffe fielding two A Grade Crews was fantastic but fielding two junior crews from our own membership pool was the ultimate as far as Surf Boat rowing is concerned I ll have more to say about that later and the people that helped us get there. BMD Northcliffe fielded two of the states six regular and competitive under 19 crews which is a true indication of the depth and support given to our developing youth/ junior division generally. On the way to the Australian Titles the Surf Boat section also achieved other significant milestones all of which have been published on the club s face book pages throughout the season. I think I should mention a couple though - 1. BMD Northcliffe Crews were the highest points scoring Queensland club in the North Coast (NSW) surf boat series competition. The A grade crews of BMD Lightening, BMD BOMS and the Under 19 BMD Tornadoes crew competed in this series 2. The BMD Northcliffe Hurricanes, Junior crew won the three major surf boat titles The Australian Title (Sunshine Coast), The Queensland State Titles (North Burleigh) and The Australian Open (Shellharbour). 3. The BMD Northcliffe Krankitz Ladies A Grade Crew won the Australian Open and were 4th in the Queensland State Final 4. The BMD Northcliffe Thunder Reserve Grade crew won the Australian Title as well as the Australian Open We had great sponsors - Our sponsors need to be recognised for their support of the BMD Northcliffe Boat Crews. Firstly Signet - Signet were responsible for designing and decorating our surf boats in distinctive colours. Liam Bell, one of our A grade rowers was the prime mover in undertaking this project with his company. We also appreciate the support from Beko, Jewell and Hogs Breath, whose brands adorn our boats. Our boats also bear the logo of the Angry Pander in appreciation of the support provided to us by Mick Power of BMD and the major sponsor of our club. As an official and assessor with the Board of life Saving, I would like to personally thank the BMD Northcliffe Life Saving team for the work that they did behind the scenes specifically Caroline, Hayden and Tim. We would not have Australian Champions from the boat section this year if this team had not gone out of their way to get our new life savers through their bronze medallions and our older ones through their proficiencies. I can not thank them enough No one was to know that any of our under 19 crews would make finals or that one of them (The Hurricanes) would eventually win the first Australian Title for the club but the dedication I saw during their training from these instructors was selfless and simply inspiring. The future is bright for the BMD Northcliffe Surf Boat section. From my experience, often boat crews look for an opportunity to simply row a surf boat rather than become involved as good club members first. This can not really be said for BMD Northcliffe Surf Boat rowers, who attended patrols and fund raising opportunities on a voluntary basis regularly - We all recognise that we are life savers first and we patrol at the beach presided over by Australia s best Surf Life Saving Club. I can not guarantee that we will get the same result next year, but what I can guarantee is that in some way the Surf Boat section will contribute to overall excellence and professionalism exhibited by, the affectionately, called BMD s. Thanks for a great season. BOAT CAPTAIN These are significant milestones. 25 REPORTS

38 VICE PRESIDENT OF JUNIOR ACTIVITIES REPORT Another year has passed and the 2015/2016 season has certainly been another enjoyable and productive season. This year conditions were less than ideal but we still managed to have fun and expose many children to our nipper program. The nippers have varying capabilities but all enjoyed what has become renowned on the Gold Coast as the best nipper experience, both on the beach and in the ocean. BMD Northcliffe prides itself on providing all young members the opportunity to join in and appreciate the wonderful facilities provided by the Club. September 2015 saw the start of our regular nipper Sundays, as well as the start of the nipper training program. Sign on days were busy with membership numbers slightly less than previous years. Our season kicked off with much purpose as both our head coach Chris Redler, and assistant coach Tiarne Smith, had done a huge amount of planning to set up programs that would enable the children the very best opportunity to train hard and reach their personal goals. Nipper Sundays again were held in a fun and happy environment and this would not have been possible if it weren t for the many helpers who ensured these days ran smoothly. To all the Age Managers, water safety officers, observers, apparel helpers and all the parents who kindly assisted, we really appreciate your time and help. Thank you. Congratulations to all our competitors for flying the BMD Northcliffe flag with pride. I need to acknowledge a few people who work tirelessly to make BMD Northcliffe nipper program the success it is. To Chris Redler, and Tiarne you have once again gone above and beyond, BMD Northcliffe is very fortunate to have your dedication and coaching skills, thank you once again. Our nippers are blessed that the President of the club, David Shields, is so interested and supportive of the nipper program, so thank you David for your continued support. Once again a massive thank you to all the parents who bring along their children to both Sunday nippers as well as the many, many training sessions and carnivals during the season to be a part of this great club. Finally, thanks to all who have helped out during my involvement at the club as the BMD Northcliffe JAC, I look forward to coming down on Sundays and seeing many happy children enjoying the beautiful beaches the Gold Coast and facilities that BMD Northcliffe provide. Thanks again. PETER VAN DER SCHYFF VP JUNIOR ACTIVITIES There is also the competitive side to the Junior Activities with both the U8-U10 s and U11-U15 s enjoying great success in various carnivals held during the season. The season culminated with the Queensland Youth Championships and this year it was held at North Burleigh with the Australian Youth Championships been held up on the Sunshine coast. Once again, a large team represented BMD Northcliffe at North Burleigh in the Queensland Youth Championships. We thank Chris, Tiarne and Courtney plus the senior coaches for their help in coaching the older nippers for this gruelling event and, after three days of competition, BMD Northcliffe once again finished a very commendable third. The U14s and U15s then travelled to Maroochydore for The Australian Youth Championships and we congratulate them on their performances at this event. It is a huge task to prepare, organise and attend these carnivals and I would again like to thank all those involved in helping out. 36 REPORTS

39 JUNIOR ACTIVITIES CO-ORDINATOR'S REPORT It s currently May and I ve received yet another from a nipper parent asking me if I m enjoying the quiet time at present and that comment always seems to make me laugh. Hmmmm, yes quiet time. Although our nipper program runs from September through to March, the planning and preparation starts straight after the season finishes. It can be one of the busiest times of the year because everything needs to be prepared and geared up for September when our Sunday nipper program starts again. Our training sessions started in June with our winter sessions, including our School Holiday program which we continue to see huge improvements in those who attend. By the time, our Sunday program had started we had over 300 nippers hitting the beach. The Surf Sports season started in June with some great results at Pool Rescue, following by the Lennox Enduro, Cudgen Classic, Waves Warriors and Fastest Man on Sand carnivals. The U11-15s continued to train hard with a win at the Young Guns carnival and at the South Coast Branch Championships, a healthy sign that athletes were racing well. The Qld Youth Championships were held in very challenging conditions at North Burleigh and unfortunately age groups were split as the U11s and U12s headed to the calmer conditions of North Kirra. The club finished in 3rd behind the strength of the Sunshine coast clubs, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headlands, and ahead of Currumbin who continue to improve. Well done to all our U14 and U15 members who travelled to Maroochdyore for the Youth Aussies, gaining valuable race experience and I hope you all enjoyed the event and it has inspired you to head into the new season with enthusiasm. To our Junior Head Coach, Chris Redler thanks again for another great year. Courtney Innes joined our team as Beach Coach with some very encouraging results from our beach section and we look forward to seeing some more great carnival placings in the future. To all the professional staff, thank you for assistance during the year Lee, Caroline, Hayden, Wally, Karen, Deb, Dermot, David and Lauren. The club would not be able to function properly without all areas of the club working together. The organisation of our Nipper program takes several months of planning but nipper days, training, carnivals and activities would not be possible without the support from the parents and members that volunteer their time during the season. To our Junior Committee, Age Managers and their assistants, water safety, officials, IRB drivers and crews and first aid officers, a huge thanks for your efforts throughout the season as we continue to provide the best possible program for our members. A special mention to Peter Van Der Schyff who will be stepping down as Vice President of Junior Activities. Peter was always heavily involved in all facets of our program and his enthusiasm, hands on help and constructive advice will be missed. Lastly thank you to all the nipper members that made this season another memorable one. Nose dives, pot holes, dumping waves, lucky breaks, good starts, bad finishes every session or race is a new learning experience and I hope that you can take away what you have learnt and apply those skills for the upcoming year. 48 VICE PRESIDENT FINANCE S REPORT COMMITTEE'S REPORT It gives me great pleasure to present the 69th annual financial report for the bmd northcliffe surf life saving club. It has been a very busy year for all sections of the club this season, continued growth in the surf sports, renovations to the kitchen and bistro area combined with general increases in costs in running the club across all areas has had an impact to the bottom line this season. Total Income this year was $2,697,014 which was slightly above the budgeted figure of $2,672,440 this represents a 0.9% increase. A major revenue stream for the club is the Sponsorship and Fundraising program headed David Shields, as in previous years this is becoming more difficult with competition from other charities all fighting for that extra dollar. This year the fundraising program raised a total of $629,772. I would personally like to thank David for his passion and hard work in raising these much needed funds for the club. I would like to especially thank the retired Mike Deane for his years of support and dedication to BMD Northcliffe in his role as President of the Supporters Club, donating a significant amount of funds over the years to help keep our club running in its day to day activities. I am looking forward to working with the new President Scott Braford and the Supporters Committee in keeping our moving forward and growing from strength to strength. Thank you to Dermot McEnroe and the professional staff for their hard work and dedication during the season and I am looking forward to another great year. 49 DECLARATION BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE The Members of the Committee of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc declare that: a. In the Committee's opinion the financial statements and notes set out on pages 8 to 13 are in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act Queensland 1981, including: (i) Giving a true and fair view of the association's financial position as at 30 April 2016 and of its performance, for the financial year ended on that date, and (ii) Complying with the Associations Incorporation Act Queensland There are reasonable grounds to believe that Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc will be able to pay its debts as and when they become due and payable. Signed in accordance with a resolution of the Management Committee DAVID SHIELDS STEPHEN FRY PRESIDENT VP FINANCE DATED 13 JUNE 2016 DATED 13 JUNE 2016 INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT TO THE MEMBERS We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc (the Club), which comprises the committee s report, the assets and liabilities statement as at 30 April 2016, the income and expenditure statement for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the member's declaration on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the association. Committee s Responsibility for the Financial Report The committee of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Queensland Assocciations Incorporations Act 1981 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The committee s responsibility also includes such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Receipts As is common with organisations of this type, it is not practicle for the Club to maintain an effective system of internal control over donations and other fund raising activities until their initial entry in the account records. Accordingly, our audit in relation to receipts was limited to amounts recorded. Opinion In our opinion, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc as at 30 April 2016 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the requirements of the Queensland Assocciations Incorporations Act Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial statements, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club Inc to meet the requirements of the Queensland Assocciations Incorporations Act As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. 51 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2015 Note 1 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act Queensland. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The committee have determined that the accounting policies adopted are appropriate to meet the needs of the users. The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets. The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements. (a) Income Tax The Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club is a charitable institution for the purposes of Australian taxation legislation and is therefore exempt from income tax. (b) Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation. The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by the committee members to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows which will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have not been discounted to present values in determining recoverable amounts. Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation of reserves in equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are charted to the income statements. Each year the difference between depreciation based on the revalued carrying amount of the asset charged to the income statement and depreciation based on the assets' original cost is transferred from the revaluation reserve to retained earnings. The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable assets are: Motor Vehicles 15% - 25% Furniture & Fixtures 5% - 33% Gear & Equipment 10% - 33% Office/Computer Equipment 25% - 40% Buldings & Leasehold Improvements 5% - 20% The assets' residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at each balance sheet date. (c) Impairment of Assets At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset s fair value less costs of disposal and value in use, to the asset s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement. (d) Leases Leases of PPE, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset (but not the legal ownership) are transferred to the association, are classified as finance leases. Finance leases are capitalised by recording an asset and a liability at the lower of the amounts equal to the fair value of the leased property or the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for that period. Leased assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the shorter of their estimated useful lives or the lease term. Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred. (e) Provisions Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period. Provision is made for the association s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee provisions have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled. (f) Cash Assets Cash assets includes cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other shortterm highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less. Bank overdrafts are shown within short-tem borrowing in current liabilities on the Statement of Financial Position. (g) Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors. Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other receivables are classified as non-current assets. (h) Revenue and Other Income Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue. Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established. Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied. Fundraising and Sponsorship income is recorded when the agreement between the Surf Club and the sponsor has been settled and invoice is raised. This income is derived by the Club's Fundraising Manager and recorded on invoice raised. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax. (i) Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of associated GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). In this case it is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of the expenses. Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the assets and liabilities statement. (j) Financial Assets Recognition and Initial Measurement Financial instruments, incorporating financial assets and financial liabilities, are recognised when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instruments. Trade date accounting is adopted for financial assets that are delivered within timeframes established by marketplace convention. Transaction costs related to instruments classified as at fair value through profit or loss are expensed to profit or loss immediately. Financial instruments are classified and measured as set out below. Classification and Subsequent Measurement (i) Loans and receivables Loans and receivables are non derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market and are stated at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method. (ii) Financial liabilities Non derivative financial liabilities are recognised at amortised cost, comprising original debt less principal payments and amortisation. 53 SUPPORTERS CLUB PRESIDENT'S REPORT It gives me great pleasure to write the Supporters Club President s Report for the BMD Northcliffe Supporters Association. As you are aware, in March this year saw the end of an era, the President Mike Deane stood down after 30 years at the helm. Mike has been inspirational in establishing and laying a foundation of success for years to come. There is not a member who has not had some dealing with Mike during his time as president of the supporters Club and prior to that president of the surf club. Mike along with his business supporters worked tirelessly to establish the sportsman luncheon 30 years ago and still today sells out with many on a waiting list. The BMD Northcliffe Sportsman Luncheon is synonymous with business people on the coast and is the number one event to attend each year. Behind every great man is a great woman.we know Robyn is Mike s right hand support and throughout his time as President had her there by his side in support, they have been a dynamic team ensuring the best for Northcliffe all the time. On behalf of the committee and all members, thank you Mike and Robyn for the years. Personally I have had the benefit of being on the Supporters Committee with Mike for 7 years and with his knowledge and guidance was endorsed by him to take over his position in March, thank you Mike, thank you for the support and I know I have big shoes to fill however with the committee you have left me with, I feel confident to keep steering the club in the best direction for all members. I would like to thank Dermot and his team for the dedication and effort throughout the year. It is always important to remember what we are here for, that is to make money for the surf club. It s not just about patrolling the beach but what I call beyond the beach and giving anybody that joins this magnificent club a place to belong that is sometimes missing in today s society. A big thank you to the President of the Surf Club, David Shields, as I have said many times, his passion for this club is infectious and spend some time with him and it catches on.it can be contagious, thanks David for your leadership and dedication along with all staff and volunteers who support you to keep the BMD Northcliffe Surf Club number one for many reasons.
