In our 89th season as a Club we are proud to report that no lives were lost under our watch, as has been the case since inception in Our members clocked up 11,236 hours on patrol, as volunteers on Queenscliff Beach throughout the season from September 2011 to 25th April, In doing so, we ushered in a changing of the guard with seven new Patrol Captains, all of whom delivered beyond expectation, under the direction of a new Patrol Co-ordinator in Gero Farruggio. It is this growing of our skills base from Nippers through to Patrolling Members to Patrol Captains that continues to feed our growth and success and sets Queenscliff well for the future. PRESIDENT S REPORT Four Surf Sports events (or Carnivals) were hosted by Queenscliff during Season , including the Interstate Championships. This included our Weekend Of Surf Sports held on the first weekend in December, with an Opens Carnival on Saturday and Nippers on Sunday. Another proud day for Queenscliff was the hosting of the 2nd Balgowlah RSL Swim for Saxon Ocean Swim, in honour and in memory of Club Member, Saxon Bird, who drowned while competing for our Club in Tom Atkinson again represented our Club in the Nutri-Grain Ironman Series doing us proud with his efforts in what is a tough competitive environment. Our sincere thanks go to all of our Club Sponsors and Donors, but especially We achieved a score of 908 out of 1000 in the Sydney Northern Beach Patrol Competition, which involves unannounced inspections and tests of our Patrolling Members throughout the season. In Life Saving, we achieved 194 awards highlighted by 76 Bronze and 36 SRCs, maintaining the high standards we set ourselves in this area. In competition, Queenscliff placed 2nd in the overall point score in the Branch Championships, thus confirming our Club s depth across all ages and areas. Over 200 members and supporters travelled north to Cudgen Beach (Kingscliff) for the NSW Championships, conducted over two weekends in March and achieving some admirable results. At the Australian Championships on North Kirra Beach in April, our small team competed in difficult emotional circumstances and did our Club very proud, showing an outstanding team culture, lead by Competition Director Tim Hayes. Twelve of our members were selected in the successful Sydney Northern Beaches Representative Team, including Team Captain s Laura Shorter and Tom Atkinson. We also provided two of the teams coaches in Tim Hayes and Michael Gedz. To all involved, well done on winning back the trophy. So ends another big season on the sand and in the water at Queenscliff Beach, one where each and every one of the Club s 1800 plus members can all be very proud of a job well done. The role of Club President, in my first season, has at times not been an easy road and I say thanks for the support of my Deputy Rob Daniel and the Club s Executive Group of Tina/Kathryn/Tim and Barry, plus club stalwart Peter Daley. To my family, Lee, Ryan and Lauren, I say thanks, for allowing me the time, from your lives, to do what is a big job, 24 hours a day, seven days a week as Queenscliff President. CRAIG SUSANS PRESIDENT Alisha Miller went on to Co-Captain the winning NSW team with new Club recruit and Water Coach Chris Allum at the Interstate Championship, held at Queenscliff Beach in January Outstanding up and coming U15 s Water Competitor Eleanor Owen was also a member of both the SNB and NSW teams. 4

TREASURER S REPORT The season 11/12 was one of change, with a new President, a part-time paid Administrator and Club Coach we moved on as other clubs have before us. With us all leading busy lives, the Administrator has been an enormous help to the committee and has instigated processes and procedures that were long overdue. Financially we were in a healthy position to manage these extra costs and with an increase in donations and sponsorship, the generosity of our community plus the sale of equipment we have maintained that position. Shearsby, who does an enormous amount of work that goes mainly un-acknowledged, thanks for always being there to sound things off and for being there to help me whenever needed. Special thanks to Peter for his superb selling skills, with the sale of boats, skis & boards and gym equipment, bringing in the cash but more importantly keeping the equipment at Queenscliff up to date and on a personal note for his enormous help and advice over my tenure, I could not have done it without you. I would like to acknowledge the great support from Manly Council, Cunninghams Property, The Northern Beaches Credit Union, The AMP Foundation, Balgowlah RSL, RNC Global Projects, Navigate Financial Group, Hotel Steyne, Allan Hall & Partners, SLSC SNB & NSW and the many other donations from our friends within the Club that helped out with cash and in kind. A special mention to that person or persons that made a large anonymous donation to the club late in the season, the bank cheque came with a small note that just said thank you, so from all of the Queenscliff Surf Club family we say a big thank you back at you for this generous donation and let you know it is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Lisa Foster, our honorary auditor, for checking of the books and preparing and presenting our financial statements. To members of the committee, thank you for your assistance and comradeship over the past three years, I have enjoyed my role (most of the time!) but now need to spend a bit more time on the South Coast as the farmer needs a wife! TINA MARTIN TREASURER Thanks go to all my financial helpers during the season, very special thanks to Jack Nash for his great help and advice and to Peter Daley and Danny White who are an endless source of support. To Bob Berry, Jim Young, Jo Farruggio and the Sunday morning team a big thanks. To Kathryn 8

GRANTS, SPONSORSHIP AND DONATIONS Last year, 2010 to 2011, saw several new sponsors for the season - Hotel Steyne, John Holland NSW/ACT, The Pittwater House Schools, Allphones and WD 40. To them go our heartfelt thanks. In 2010 to 2011, successful grant applications included $16,500 under the NSW Government Community Building Partnership Program (second round) and $45,000 from Manly Council, both in relation to the Lifeguards and First Aid Rooms. The Club was also successful in receiving radios to the value of $1,600 under the Telstra Assistance Fund. Turning to this year, all our major sponsors from last year continued their much appreciated support again this year, namely Manly Council, Cunninghams Property, Northern Beaches Credit Union, RNC Global Projects, Navigate Financial Group, Hotel Steyne, Balgowlah RSL Memorial Club and Mosman Locksmiths. John Holland supported us again this year and we welcomed icontact Optometrists as sponsors of Nippers, along with Camnet as office equipment sponsors. The funding provided by the new sponsors and our existing sponsors enables the Club to support members by mitigating running and building costs as well as providing surf craft, boats, IRB motors, competition and training wear and swimming and tertiary scholarships. So when you get the chance please support our sponsors. The Club was active in applying for grants again this year, but it was a very competitive field with limited success. Thanks also go to the generous members and supporters of the Club who have made cash and in kind donations throughout the year to support the club, carnivals and sections of the Club, as listed elsewhere in the Report. 14 MAJOR SPONSORS MANLY COUNCIL Manly Council subsidises our patrol operations and lifesaving, as well as maintains various aspects of our Club buildings as lessor. Our long and close working relationship with the Council continues with our long time friend, Mayor Jean Hay AM, and Clr Dr Peter Macdonald OAM on the Council s Surf Club Liaison Working Group. Other councillors continue to support the work the Club does on and off the beach, particularly providing a safe area for congregation and friendship for all ages in the local community. NORTHERN BEACHES CREDIT UNION Northern Beaches Credit Union again renewed their sponsorship and are now into their thirteenth season with the Club under the stewardship of Clulow, CEO. The Club launched their 13th Northern Beaches Credit Union surfboat, which was named after, and christened by, long time Club member Jim Young on the 29th of January 2012 on the beach. The Club continues to utilise the Credit Union for its banking and financial services. CUNNINGHAMS PROPERTY Cunninghams Property provides both sponsorship and support across a range of Club activities and our thanks go to John Cunningham and his team for supporting us for the fourth year: from shelter sides of the patrol tent to the loan of marquees, as well as supporting University Scholarships for members under 25 years of age and the Annual Golf Day. RNC GLOBAL PROJECTS Now in their third year of support, RNC Global Projects, through the enthusiasm of Diane Dromgold, MD, has this year funded two new resuscitation mannequins for our training courses. The provision of our patrol uniforms continues through the support of RNC. AMP FOUNDATION / NAVIGATE FINANCIAL GROUP Club members Steve Beaumont and Tony Borg, though Navigate Financial Group and the AMP Foundation continue their ninth year of support of lifesaving and the Annual Golf Day in November. BALGOWLAH RSL MEMORIAL CLUB Balgowlah RSL Memorial Club, their Directors and senior staff have been keen supporters of the Club for over 25 years and continue to support us through the Club GRANTS program, quarterly meat raffles and as a venue for our large functions. Funds provided by the RSL Club were utilised for acquisition of Nipper Boards and swimming scholarships for Nippers, Cadets and U19s. Our thanks go to President, John Langford, and CEO, Hendrik Visser. MOSMAN LOCKSMITHS Mosman Locksmiths provide a wonderful in-kind service to the Club by providing all our key and locking security needs across a matrix of access levels and locations throughout the various club buildings and rooms. Many thanks to Steve and Beth Worrall and their staff for this important service. HOTEL STEYNE Now into our second year of support from Hotel Steyne and MD, Gerard Dore, the Club thanks the Hotel for its support of the Club as well as the provision of vouchers for use at the hotel along with tables and chairs in the clubrooms. Hotel Steyne 10

CLUB CAPTAIN S REPORT Season 2011/2012 has come to an end with a total of 11,236 Patrol Hours carried out on Queenscliff Beach by our 351 Patrolling Members. During the season we had 46 rescues, 95 First Aid incidents and 2,593 Preventative Actions with an estimated attendance of 168,623 people on Queenscliff Beach over the season. It s easy to see that with the high number of preventative actions resulting in a low number of rescues, and the vigilance of our patrolling members, they have kept the number of rescues to a low 46. Once again, we can say no lives were lost on Queenscliff Beach while it was being patrolled. This season we saw 10 new Captains and Vice Captains take over the roles from retiring long-term members who had held these positions for many seasons. During the patrolling season, the 21 clubs that form Sydney Northern Beaches Branch had five Patrol Inspections with a maximum of 200 points each inspection. This season Queenscliff came in 8th place with 908 points and this is a reflection of the high standards our Patrol Teams maintain throughout the season. I would like to thank and congratulate all those Patrol Members, Captains and Vice Captains for achieving this great result. P1 James Keene, Mark Creighton and Peter Green. P2 Colin Dagger and Graham Lugsdin. P3 Paul Schott and Webb. P4 Stephen Beaumont, Garth Hickey and Adam Taylor. P5 Vacant. P6 Vacant. P7 Natalie Bayly and Andrew Townsend. 17 CHIEF INSTRUCTOR S REPORT My first season as Chief Instructor at Queenscliff comes to an end and looking back we have had a successful year. Again it was a very busy and successful year. This year the focus was on developing not only new members but trainers, thus making it a little easier on the trainers, giving us time to introduce new trainers with the help of the experienced ones. BRONZE AND SRC ASSESSORS A big thank you to our Assessors who have travelled from Newport to Manly assessing Bronze and SRC Groups dry parts usually mid week and wet on Saturday and Sunday mornings, for as long as five hours. It is a big commitment for Kerry Seipelt-Walker, Des Tracey, Terry Boardman, Barry Antella, Garry Fox and Paul Taylor. There was a strong focus on maintaining a high standard for our Bronze Squads. The Branch has introduced central venues for assessments, which means additional work for the trainers. Bronze Squad were taken by Gavin May, Rodger Whiteman and Paul Taylor and helped by other trainers when required. Support was provided by Louise Hannan, Garry Fox, Col White and Rob Woodley. An ARTC Squad, run by Garry Fox and Kerry Seipelt-Walker, ensured that we have highly trained people on the beach with knowledge of defibrillation and oxygen therapy. SRC were very well managed by our Trainer of the Year, John (The Pied Piper) O Toole who put in a great effort with our younger members who are the Club s future. Thanks a lot, John! You are a pleasure to be around with your enthusiasm, which rubs off on the kids. John was helped by some of the parents, including Samantha Cleary, Simon Osborn and Chris Harmsen and by Gemma Sammat and Maddie Perkins. Garry Fox has been a tremendous help, stepping in when needed with Bronze Groups and with organising groups while doing an ARCT group. During the year, St Joseph s College, Hunters Hill, again had students doing Bronze, IRB Crewman. Ten of last year s Bronzes, with a teacher, did a Spinal Management Award. The only downside for the Joey s mob was that long-time surf teacher, John Cherry, left after the Christmas break to pursue a medical degree I have already told him I m in Medicare only. But John will be missed and we wish him well in his new endeavour. Hopefully teachers Cassandra Aitken and Barry Hughes will be filling the breach with help from Queensie. At this point, I would like to thank Rob Daniels for his help and organisation with the Joey s boys. Gavin May and Rodger Whiteman have done the Assessors Course and will boost our ranks next year we thank Geoff Lyall who decided to call it a day on the assessing front and concentrate on being a Beach Official. ARTC ASSESSORS Assessors meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6pm until finished Terry Boardman, Kerry Seipelt-Walker, Garry Fox and Barry Antella. IRB ASSESSORS Assessors Alicia Robledo, Barry Antella and Terry Boardman. These people do a tremendous job and spend a lot of time at other clubs so we can get our candidates assessed. Trainers Louise Hannan, Rob Woodley and Jane Kelleher helped with Bronze Squads and Maddie Perkins with SRC. Col White was there when required and was always willing to help. Thanks to Alicia Robeldo together with Colin Dagger, Josh Ferris, Brian Rignall and Jason Elkins who trained IRB crew and drivers. Proficiencies are always a busy time of the year and thanks to everyone who helped. Special thanks to Assessors from other clubs that have helped us throughout the year. Also thanks to the Branch staff, especially Sandy Menzies, for all their help. Thanks to the Club Committee for their support. Hopefully I ve mentioned everyone that helped, if not I apologise. Let me know and I ll shout you a drink. DAVE TOREVELL CHIEF INSTRUCTOR 13

The Nippers membership keeps growing at Queensie, especially in the U6&7s. Luckily Garry Farrar took on the younger age groups and helped organize them into sub age groups. These were Sharks, Dolphins & Marlins in the 6s and Blue Whales, Barracudas & Sting Rays in the 7s. The green & orange vests of the age managers could not be missed on the beach each Sunday morning. NIPPER REPORT As you can see we have a large number of parents, thank you all. This year Queenscliff nippers had a number of its members filling spots in the branch team. Congratulations to Callum Lowe-Griffiths, Joel Aitken, Naomi Scott, Grace Gurr, Finnian Kelleher, you represented your club and your branch well. Some highlights to the season: Christmas Party with Santa taking a tumble off the IRB while making his entrance Mini Olympics between the Under 6 s & Under 7 s groups Season Wrap disco didn t know we had so many One Direction fans including parents! With Garry and the Junior Age Managers the 100s of 6s & 7s were a well oragnised group and the kids had a ball. So much so that many even turned up for nippers in very poor weather conditions. Their parents deserve a medal! Our year started with our usual registration days and it was great to see so many new families to nippers join up, with so many parents so keen to get involved. Our competitive nippers had a training camp at Cape Hawke again and the Cape Hawke Club was again very hospitable & accommodated a lot of our kids & parents in their clubhouse. The weather was great & the kids all trained with new energy for the new season under Tom, Ryan, Alisha, Mick, Ben & Lauren. We are indebted to our Age Managers & Assistant Age Managers; most have done this role for a few years and more. This year we had: 14s; Dave Slennett & Simon Osborne 13s; Pam Walton & Annabel Nelson 12s; Liz Osborne Adam Hughes & Rob MacNamara 11s; Steve Nelson, Jake Condon & Janet Young 10s; Andrew Hislop, Wayne Manley, Kati Cummins & Gabby Davis 9s; Kate Perrett, Garry Farrar, Ewen Litchfield, Troy Fullwood, Tom Highnam, Stephen & Peta Varga, Trudy Rebbeck & Stuart Dunn. 8s; Eddie Chilcott, Paul Hull, Matt Turner, Paul Manchester, Phil Kelly, Jeff Brunton, Hendricks, Charlie Ridout, Patrick Tully, Henry Calvert & Bart Gerritson. 7s; Matthew Kelly, Kathryn Lamond, Dave Leslie, Sarah Foreman, Sally Windmill, Luke Steed, Domonic Wells, Stephne Murray, Mark Latham-Callcott, Matthew Gee, Robb MacNicol, Lars Aagaard. 6s; James Hotten, J.P Warren, Chris Bates, Natalie Slessor, Stephen Porter, Brook Russell, Brendan Clancy, Nicola Clancy, Kevin Grinham, Gregor MacDonald, Niall Ronan. Our competitive nippers were coached on boards by Ryan, Emma, Harry, Liam, again our nippers were to be reckoned with at all the carnivals they attended. The club attended all the local carnivals; Bennett Board at Dee Why, Manly JAC, Bennett Iron Man at Freshwater, we hosted all other clubs at our Queenscliff Carnival, Narrabeen, Branch at Narrabeen, & States at Kingscliff. Liz Osborne took on the role of carnival entries again, Liz s well-organized approach & thorough knowledge of our competitors was essential in the great job she did this year. Our results this year were slightly down on last year, the previous years our results have been improving & improving, to maintain these results would have been near impossible. However the new season will see some refinements to the coaching structure and Ryan s coaching team from 2012 will be joined by a coaching team headed up by Tim Hayes with the NSW captain Chris Allum joining the coaching team. Watch out 2013! All of our nippers were again well kitted out by our clothing shop run by Jo Farruggio. With help from some mums the Queenscliff red & blue was all over the beach every Sunday morning. Every year we ask that some of our parents complete an official s course and officiate at the carnivals, with out their input our nippers would not be able to compete. Thanks to those parents who took their time to both complete the course and donate their time at carnivals. I would especially like to mention & thank Gaz Farrar; every Sunday morning Gaz got the BBQ and the nippers going, he collected the bread & snags, his Sunday morning started at 7am, thanks Gaz Dave Slennett; Dave ran the competitive section of the nippers this year, selected teams and fielded the many questions from parents that arise as the season nears state titles and final team are selected. Nippers will only benefit from your input, & you will find that you will get enormous satisfaction from your input, so please help the few that help so many of your kids. JAMES BOYCE 14

SWIM, BOARD & SKI REPORT The season started early for Queensie with four of our members heading to Noosa for the Kellogg s trials. Alisha Miller, Briella Brown, Tom Atkinson and Liam Jackson all did the club and themselves proud in what many believe was the hottest field of athletes, trying to qualify, in the event s history. The pace was ferocious and our members were very well supported by a large contingent of family and club mates a fantastic way to kick off the season. The next trip away for Queensie was the Coolangatta Gold; again this was a very successful weekend that required lots of logistical support. Peter Daley and Barry Antella (AKA The Grey No Nads) were a valuable link in this arena and we couldn t have achieved without them thanks boys. The Coolangatta Gold is a grueling event even without competing against the elements but this year Huey dished up some extremely testing conditions for the competitors; it wasn t for the faint hearted and all participants took their mental strength to new levels. We achieved some good results and several of the split times were top six for the entire event well done Team Q and thanks to all involved. The Hawkesbury Classic was the next event on the calendar and we had five members participate in the arduous 111km overnight paddle from Windsor to Brooklyn. Craig Mason, a regular on the IRB racing circuit, showed he is no slouch with a paddle in his hand, completing the course on a double kayak in a very respectable time. Liam Jackson and Tim Hayes, paddling single DD3 Ocean Skis and supported by Mick Atkinson (road crew), finished strongly after tackling serious weed issues in the first 47km. Damien Daley partnered with Scotty Miles and smashed the event record in a times of 7hrs 50mins. Extraordinary! The Kellogg s series saw Tom on the pace with some very good ski, board and swim legs in several races. Tom s individual brilliance was again overshadowed by being down on the luck when racing in surf. Tom was again well supported by numerous members who made the effort to travel to Newcastle and interstate venues. Good job everyone. Interbranch Team: Queensie had sensational representation in the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Team. The carnival was held in very testing conditions at Redhead Beach and the point score went down to the wire, with SNB being crowned State Champions as a result of the last race. Queencliff members in the team were Tom Atkinson (Co Captain), Alisha Miller, Laura Shorter (Co Captain), Briella Brown, Eleanor Owen, Sita Paling, Joel Aitken, Calum Griffiths-Lowe, Finnean Kelleher, Grace Gurr, Naomi Scott and Tim Hayes (Assistant Coach). The Queensie crew contributed exceptionally well in what was an amazing win. The performance of several members earned them State selection, with Alisha gaining the State captaincy. Queenscliff athletes attend many other carnivals leading up to Branch Championships and achieved some outstanding results. At the Manly Carnival, Ben Schaffer let a very strong field of swimmers. Know that he s a force to be reckoned with at the senior level. He took out the Under 17 surf race. Branch Champs: We had a large number of competitors that were bolstered by the crew from St Joseph s College and Monte Sant Angelo. Several beach sprint heats were made up of all Queensie members yes Queensie 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8. Our team travelled back to Kingscliff for the State Championships this year and with absolutely no sand at the surf club section of the beach, the carnival was split. The beach events went south 1km and the water areas were 2kms to the north. The team had no chance of doing both this year. Conditions were very tricky in all water areas and on many occasions we had a lot of competitors in medal-winning positions only to be beaten by the surf. Congratulations must go to these medal winners: Simone Shearsby 3rd in Open Board Riding, Alisha Miller and Elle Atkinson 2nd in Open Board Rescue, Mel Martinuzzo and Reece Holland 3rd in the Open Mixed Double Ski, Tom Atkinson, Ben Atkinson and Liam Jackson 3rd in Open Board Relay, Alisha Miller, Arielle Bird, Carly Brewer and Briella Brown 2nd in Open Female Surf Team, Matt Jepson 3rd in Open Male Surf Belt, Eleanor Owen 3rd in Ironwoman and Eleanor Owen, Sita Paling, Gemma Nicholas and Lara Jones 2nd in U15 Surf Team. The whole crew had a good time and did themselves and the club proud. The Aussies Wow what a great bunch of people we have at our club, we are so lucky. The carnival started in typical Kurrawa style. Gemma Nichols, Lara Jones, Charlie McGrath and Eleanor Owens, all at their first Aussies, were gob-smacked at the amount of craft, people and the size of the show. After the terrible accident that claimed the life of young Matthew Barclay, we all started reliving the days in which we lost our own champion competitor, champion person, champion brother, champion son and champion friend, Saxon. Sadly, it s tragic accidents such as these that bring people closer together. The way in which the Queenscliff Team bonded and supported each other was exceptional; be proud, team. In obliging with the wishes of the Barclay family, the carnival continued with all events moving to Kirra Beach. Here we witnessed many inspirational moments, the first being Eleanor s bronze medal in the Under 15 surf race. Gemma, Lara and Charlie, competing up an age group, teamed with Eleanor to get 5th in the Surf Teams race. Other highlights were Dan Gurr getting 5th in the Under 15 Tube race and our older competitors in Elle Atkinson, Mel Martinuzzo, Jess Duncan, Alisha Miller, Tom and Ben Atkinson, Ryan Susans, Liam Jackson, Reece Holland, Damien Daley and Laura Shorter all making either semi finals or finals. Reece Holland improved with every race and was instrumental in our open Taplin team making the final. Successful competition would not be possible without the support of everyone. It s a team effort. Parents getting athletes to training, coaches, assessors, trainers, patrol captains, BBQ crew, support crew, admin crew thanks to you all. Looking forward to a successful year ahead; if you can do something, do it, anything; you can t just be something, you ve got to do something to be something. TIM HAYES We won our fair share of medals at Branch including the lifesaver relay after it was set up with a solid boat leg, but the highlight for me was being alongside our president, Craig Susans, Col White and Harry Hayes with Matt Jepson taking the gold medal in the nostalgic Under 19 belt swim. 15

Another busy season for the IRBs and the IRB team for 2011/12. I m very pleased to announce that during this season, the IRB team thrived both during competition & in general. In the cold winter months of 2011 saw our strong team of 19 + dominate the NSW IRB Premiership, State & Australian titles. The team which included, Jayson Elkins, Craig Mason, Talia Mason, Adam Shearsby, Shaun Stewart, Jacob Sammut, Gemma Sammut, Rhys Phillips, Brian Rignall, Jake Williams, Alicia Robledo, Zoe Moffat, Terina Tiate, Simon Metcalf, Benny Hale, Nick Beck, Emily Burgess, Maddie Perkins Started well at round 1 at Collaroy in large swells to say the least reaching 9 finals with the highest placing 1st & 2nd. The team only gathered momentum from here which saw us being the club to beat & climb the premiership table finishing a solid 5th overall from 20 + clubs in NSW. NSW State titles saw again some pretty testing conditions for our crews and im pleased to announce that we once again finished 5th overall with too many Gold, Silver & Bronze to mention with the entire team performing well and finishing only 1 point behind Australian champions Thirroul Kiama Downs & South Maroubra. Australian Titles were held at Glenelg Sth Australia which saw our team again being the talking point of the carnival again being the club to beat. After some strong scrutiny, We didn t let the rumours down with Jayson Elkins, Adam Shearsby, Craig Mason, Shaun Stewart, Gemma Sammut & Emily Burgess gaining a Silver Medal in the Open teams event. A truly amazing result for a lot of hard work & a dedicated team. Our IRBs & team also were kept very busy during the summer season being called upon for water safety for many carnivals & events. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my trustworthy team for demonstrating that the IRB team are not only good at competition, though dam good IRB REPORT lifesavers as well putting on an awesome display of rescues at all of our carnivals including the Interstate which saw some very large swells & Adam Shearsby turning his first IRB over. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Craig Susans and the club for their support of IRBs & my team. As the team gets bigger and the results come in, the price of running the IRBs isn t getting cheaper & although the team raised $6,500 through fundraising this year, Craig & the club have been very supportive & its well appreciated, so thank you. I would also like to thank our sponsor FGI/NUPLEX Dave Hay, once again his kind donations have been a major contribution to our success. As always, Barry Antella & Leo Zaconne have to be mentioned. Both big supporters of IRBs and their repairs & maintenance dont go un noticed, So thank you Baz & Leo. Finally, I would like to thank my partner/good mate & the best IRB motor mechanic going around Nick Beck aka Kool Performance. Nick not only keeps us going, but kindly donated a $900 prop guard to the club, and regularly services not only our competition motors but also our general motors totally free of charge. Nick is the reason for our success both on and off the water and he cant be thanked enough. See you at the beach JAYSON ELKINS 16

Once again we had a mixed season as we continue to recruit and rebuild our crews particularly in the Under 18 and Under 23 age groups, while ensuring we also maintain our competitive presence in the surf with our existing crews. With the support of key sweeps, Tom Hand, Alex Welsh, Ian Martin, Peter Daley and Ray Williams, we ran training sessions each weekend at Clontarf over winter aimed at attracting and coaching new rowers (and sweeps) and at the peak managed to attract up to 20 rowers. While we were able to attract a number of new recruits, the majority decided that they were not able to commit to the rigours and time requirements for the season. However, as a result of the work done in the offseason, we were able to field two competitive Under 23 crews. They will be even stronger next season for the time spent in the surf this year. We also managed to recruit a new sweep in Scott Cable, an experienced rower, who showed great promise until he unfortunately had to go overseas at the key part of the season. He will hopefully be back next season to pick up where he left off. Over the season, we fielded up to nine crews all of whom were competitive at various stages of the year. It was great to see the spread of crews across Open Men, Open Ladies, Reserves, U23 and Masters. This season saw a number of firsts including: 1. The Rexonas making the step up from Reserves to Open 2. Fielding two competitive crews in both the U23 and Open Women s divisions 3. The Top Paddocks joining the Masters ranks (and enjoying it). We continued to show that the QRU are a force to be reckoned with, on and off the water. Despite our best efforts we missed out on bringing back a medal at the Aussies but still managed to show that Queensie remains one of the top boat clubs in Australia with a number of impressive results throughout the season. MAJOR RESULTS INCLUDED: Rexonas (A Crew): Branch Finalist, Life Saver Relay T-Rex (Reserve): 1st Branch, 1st Battle of the Boats, 1st ASRL National Championships, 1st Freshwater, 5th Manly BOAT REPORT It was great to see the ongoing progress with Snel s Belles as they became increasingly confident and competitive in the surf. This year, we also welcomed a number of new members to the Club William Slattery, James Molloy, Duncan Boyd-Jones, Andrew Manna, Andrew Hunter, Alistair L Estrange, Nick Heard, Genevieve Delves, Anna Henry, Rebecca Lock and Scott Cable. It will be wonderful to see these new members continue to compete with the QRU next season as they become the new nucleus for our future crews. It was also fantastic to see some of the older brigade finally acknowledge their age and join the Mouldy Muffins in the Masters competitions. Paul Burton, James Darmody, Adam Stanley and John Vickery stepped up to the Masters 140 age group, where they were very competitive, while also continuing to be competitive in the Open Reserve division. I look forward to watching their future success next season. This season we were once again unable to field an U19 boat crew. If we wish to remain a strong force in surf boats we will need to focus on developing this section as it is the juniors who become the seniors in years to come. Our major sponsor continues to provide fantastic support to us and this season we christened the 8th new boat with the Manly Warringah Credit Union. This year saw the Credit Union change their name to the Northern Beaches Credit Union with this year s boat being christened under the new branding and logo. We are fortunate to have such supportive sponsors who not only provide the funds to ensure we have the best boat fleet in Australia, but are also keen to be involved in our activities, on and off the water. With their change of business name we will be working with the NBCU to transition the remaining boats to the new branding over the next two seasons. Thanks again to everyone at the NBCU in particular, Clulow and John Watt. This season we also made the decision, after nine years with Clymer Boats, to transition to a new boat builder, N R Perry Surf Boats. This decision was made with involvement and input over a number of weeks of testing by key sweeps and crews. We welcome Nathan, Kelly and their children to the Queenscliff family and look forward to seeing this relationship continue to grow in the years to come. An interesting side line to this change is that Nathan was originally an apprentice boat builder for Bob Miles, who supplied Queenscliff with many boats over many years. Top Paddocks (Reserve) 3rd Branch, Finalist at Manly and Freshwater (140 Masters) 1st Branch, 1st State Brazzer (U23): 1st Battle of the Boats, 3rd State, 5th Australian Mouldy Muffins (180 Masters): 4th Battle of the Boats, 2nd State. 1st Rooster River Run Marathon This year the new boat was christened in honour of a great Club and QRU member, James Young. James joined the Club in 1956 and has taken on numerous roles in the Club including Club Captain and in more recent years served as the Club s upstairs manager. Jim has competed for the Club in boats from Juniors to Masters and has been a strong supporter of the boat section through providing sponsorship dollars, morale support on and off the beach and towing boats to major carnivals, including Perth on three occasions. (By the way Jim there is another Aussies in Perth coming up.) Thank you, Jim, and well deserved. In keeping with tradition, the Rexona boat crew was given the honour of christening the boat on the day. 17

News from overseas is that past Boat Captain, Matt Press was invited to row down the Thames as part of the Queen s Jubilee Pageant in June. Matt was be part of a contingent of 36 rowers in nine surf boats participating in this event. Well done, Matt Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank the key supporters and workers whose commitment to the boat section ensures we remain the best equipped and presented Club in Australia. In particular to Scott Spradbrow, thank you once again for your patience and diligence in managing all of the entries (and last minute changes) throughout the season; Tom Hand for your unbelievable commitment and many hours of work in and around the shed, repairing boats and oars and generally keeping on top on the overall condition of the shed; Mark Clare-Nazer for assistance in rewiring another boat, Barry Antella for servicing the trailers to ensure they are roadworthy; Peter Daley for ensuring we get the best possible prices for the gear we sell. To everyone else who has worked around the shed throughout this season, thank you, your efforts ensure all of our gear remains in perfect working order. To all of the sweeps and rowers who also put in additional time around the Club, supporting and assisting each other and each of the Club s events, including our carnivals and assisting in the construction of the new patrol shed, thank you. To those members who volunteer to tow the boats to carnivals throughout the year, particularly Peter Daley, Ian Martin and Alex Welsh who towed boats to and from the State and Aussies, thank you. If I have forgotten anyone, please accept my sincere apologies. Thank you also to the Club s boat officials who turn up at each of the carnivals throughout the season to make sure the boat events are run efficiently and smoothly. Queenscliff has one of the strongest contingents of boat officials, all of whom are very well respected across the surf boat fraternity nationally. Officials this year once again included Peter Daley, Al Butler, Roger Whiteman, George Prescott, Bob Newton and Greg Heard. Greg Heard was again appointed to the NSW Boat Commission. The respect with which each of our officials is held across all areas of the surf boat fraternity and the State and National Panels is extremely high and is testament to their own personal contribution and the overall strength of the Queenscliff Boat section. It is through each of your efforts and the generosity of our sponsors and supporters, that we are able to have the best fleet of boats and one of the strongest team of crews that is the envy of every other Club around Australia. Finally, a huge thank you to all of the sweeps and rowers who put in the many hours of training day in day out and supported me and the QRU through the season. I look forward to working with each of you to make us even stronger next year. WARREN MOLLOY BOAT PERSON OF THE YEAR TOM HAND. Since joining Queenscliff in 1987, Tom has continued to train and sweep crews for the Club. Tom is also always the first to put his hand up when something needs to be done with the boats, oars, rowlocks or trailers throughout the season, spending countless hours each and every week repairing and maintaining all of the Club s gear. His untiring efforts continue during the off season as he works on every piece of equipment to ensure it is in excellent racing condition for the coming season. 18 BOAT REPORT BOB MCGEACHIE BOAT CREW OF THE YEAR; BRAZZERS ALEX WELSH, LACHLAN BEATTIE, WILLIAM SLATTERY, JAMES MOLLOY, HARRY EVANS The Brazzers had a great year in the U23 competition, with a new combination of rowers. These guys made everyone in their division sit up and take notice, with major results being 1st at the Battle of the Boats, 3rd State and 5that the Australian championships MOST IMPROVED ROWER TODD WALTON Todd stepped into the T-Rex crew this season and didn t look back. He slotted into this crew as if he had been rowing with them for years rather than weeks. With his introduction the crew continued to be one of the best performing crews in the Reserve division. They gained a 1st at Freshwater, 1st at Branch, 1st at Battle of the Boats and 1st at ASRL National Championships. They were extremely unlucky to once again miss out on the finals at the State and Aussies and deserved medals at both these events. CREWS: Open Men Rexonas: Alex Welsh, Newton, Andrew Newton, Scott Spradbrow, Rhys Williams. Open Women Snel s Belles: Chris Snel, Alex Butt, Sam Butt, Annabel Butt, Ashleigh Tracey. Houze-Os: Wayne Donnelly, Anne Marie Mannile, Genevieve Delves, Anna Henry, Rebecca Lock. Reserves T-Rexes: Matt Hamilton, Adrian Walding, Dan Wagers, Frew, Todd Walton U23 Men Brazzers: Alex Welsh, Lachlan Beattie, William Slattery, James Molloy, Harry Evans. GREG HEARD BOAT CAPTAIN

MASTERS SWIM, BOARD & SKI REPORT There was a good roll up of Queenscliff masters water competitors at most carnivals attended by the club, with the exception of State Masters where only 3 Queenscliff water competitors competed. Health issues again dominated the season. The question is: are they training too hard or is it just an age thing? Kevin Harris finally resumed training and competition following his triple heart by-pass operation in late John Davis also resumed training and competition following hip surgery in Danny White had an operation on his hand in mid 2011 and then he succumbed to pneumonia in late 2011 and was hospitalised and bedridden for a lengthy period. Peter Dean suffered a heart attack at the Branch Championships at Narrabeen Beach. Medical examination at the hospital indicated that Peter may have also suffered a heart attack at the East Coast Masters two weeks earlier. He was operated on and had several stents inserted. Following a period of convalescence Peter resumed surf board riding in early April Tim Hayes travelled to the State tiles at Kingscliff but couldn t compete due to a severe bout of influenza... Tim Hayes sick? I hear you ask and yes, even Tim is not immune to colds and the like. Ed Kwanten contracted pneumonia, he thinks on a return flight to Australia from Phuket in November following the wedding of his middle son Mitchell on a small island off Phuket. A number of viral infections ensued and Ed did little hard training and competition from December 2011 until the Aussie titles. Mark Clare-Nazer s bad luck at Kurrawa continues...in 2010 he tore his pectoral muscle requiring surgery and this year he snapped his Achilles tendon and was subjected to a further operation. CARNIVALS Carnivals attended by the Queenscliff masters water contingent included: FRESHWATER MASTERS 19 NOVEMBER 2011 Ten Queenscliff masters water competitors ventured to Freshwater on a fine day with east/south east winds, temperature of 24 degrees and surf of around 1 metre were the order of the day at the Freshwater carnival. The club achieved good results and finishing 2nd in the point score. Water results included wins to: 150 Board Relay Team of Tim Hayes, Ian Poole and Peter Dean; and the 130 Taplin Relay team of Darrin Jones, Ian Poole and Damien Daley. PALM BEACH TWILIGHT MASTERS 6 JANUARY 2012 A cool afternoon with south to south-east winds and surf up to 1m greeted the 34 teams in 2 divisions at the Palm Beach Twilite carnival. Queenscliff entered 2 teams and both were in Division B. Some great team performances saw the red team ( Ian Poole, Tim Hayes, Scott Somerville and Grant Henderson) finish in first position with the blue team (Kev Harris/Damien Daley, Chris Maker, Robyn Henderson and Derryck Pickering) not far behind in 3rd spot. The red team won the Board Relay event and finished in the top 3 in the other 4 events. The blue team won the Beach Relay. A sausage sizzle and a glass or two of cordial was enjoyed by all before returning home. EAST COAST MASTERS COLLAROY 5 FEBRUARY 2012 Queenscliff with 16 Masters water competitors achieved some good performances, including winning the point score, at Collaroy on a hot day with surf around the 1.5 to 2m mark and plenty of seaweed. Wins to Neil Schafer in the 55-59yrs Surf race; Peter Dean in the yrs Board race; Dave Slennett in the Ski; Mark Clare-Nazer in the Ski; Maree White in the Womens Ski; Chris Maker and Derryck Pickering in the years Double Ski; Peter Dean/Ian Poole/ Ed Kwanten in the 170 yrs Board Relay; Daz Jones/Ian Poole/Dave Slennett in the 130 yrs Taplin; and Danny White/Peter Dean/Mark Clare-Nazer in the 170yrs Taplin. BRANCH CHAMPIONSHIPS - NARRABEEN BEACH - 18 FEBRUARY 2012 Narrabeen Beach was the venue for the 2012 Branch Championships. The day was overcast with light sou east winds early, increasing later in the morning, and surf up to 1.5m. 22 Queenscliff masters water competitors attended. Queenscliff Branch champions were: Danny White (65-69yrs Surf, Ironman, Tube and the Board Rescue with Ed Kwanten); Maree White (45-49yrs Ski and Tube); Kev Harris (65-69 yrs Board); Ed Kwanten (65-69 yrs Board Rescue with Danny White); Phil Bird/Neil Schafer/ Ed Kwanten (170 yrs Board Relay); Neil Schafer/Ed Kwanten/Dave Slennett (170 yrs Taplin). Competitors also achieved 10 Silver and 7 Bronze medals to help the Club still finished 2nd in the point score. THE STATE AT KINGSCLIFF 8 MARCH 2012 The Masters State championships were again held at Kingscliff on the Far North Coast. Only 3 Queenscliff masters water competitors competed. The three, Ian Poole, John Davis and Col White all made finals. Queenscliff, due in no small part to the great results on the beach, finished 4th in the State Point score. 19

MASTERS SWIM, BOARD & SKI SECTION THE AUSSIES KURRAWA 26 AND 27 MARCH 2012 The Aussie Masters were held at Kurrawa again. 16 Queenscliff masters water competitors made the trip. Day 1 (individual events) was sunny/cloudy, with light south/ sou-east winds and maximum temperature around 28 degrees. The surf was 1 to 1.5m The weather for day 2 (team events) was sunny/showery/cloudy, with strong sou-east winds and a maximum temperature of 27degrees. The surf was around the 1m. GOLD WENT TO: Damien Daley and Dave Slennett in the years Double Ski; and Danny White and Ed Kwanten in the years Board Rescue. A Silver medal was won by Tim Hayes (his first water medal at Aussies) after a great paddle in the years Board race final, after just scraping in the heat and semi-final. BRONZE MEDALS WERE WON BY: Maree White in the years Womens Ski race to add to her collection in this event; and Ed Kwanten, after just making the cut in the semi-final, had a very good paddle to just miss the major medal finishing 3rd in the years Board race. With sterling support from the beach contingent the Club achieved a great 6th placing in the point score at Australian Masters championships where some 300 clubs competed. A convivial get-together, organised by John Davis and Paul Hammond, of all sections of the Queenscliff Masters, was held at a restaurant and a good night was had by all. OTHER SNIPPETS Ian Poole for the second year (he did it in 2010 with Peter Dean) competed in the gruelling 2011 Hawaiian Molokai paddle race of 32 miles with his son Matt and finishing 2nd in the open teams in a time of 5 hours 14 minutes, beating the previous record held by clubman Brad Gaul and Mick Porra. Also, Brad Gaul finished second in the opens in 2011 in the second fastest time ever. The Whites (that s Danny and Maree) travelled to New York for the World Police and Fire Games with both claiming a haul of medal...danny 3 gold, including winning the 3.2klm open water swim, and 3 bronze medals; and Maree with a silver and bronze medals. Ed Kwanten upheld the family name and won the Santa Monica Pier paddle race held in Los Angeles in June 2011, won in 2010 by his son Ryan who couldn t compete in 2011 owing to filming on the day. Well done to all Masters competitors keep training. See you next season. ED KWANTEN MASTERS BOAT REPORT This year Queenscliff fielded two Masters crews with the Mouldy Muffins being joined by the Top Paddocks. Both crews performed extremely well during the season and were unlucky not to go all the way at the Aussies. Once again the Mouldy Muffins hit the water with a core crew of Matt Rice, Ian Martin, Greg Heard and Peter Rogers. They were joined by a number of guest Masters throughout the season. With Chris Snel and Matt Hamilton, they won the Rooster River Run Surf Boat Marathon, won every round-robin race at Battle of the Boats with Paul Burton, won a Silver medal at the State Titles with Alex Welsh and with John Vickery were unlucky to miss the finals at the Aussies. Imagine what they could achieve with a consistent crew. The new boys on the Masters circuit, the Top Paddocks (Alex Welsh, Paul Burton, John Vickery, James Darmody and Adam Stanley) competed extremely strongly throughout the season, not only in the 140 age group but also in the Open Reserve. 20 They placed 3rd at the branch and were finalist at both Freshwater and Manly in the Open division, while also securing 1st place at the Branch and State Championships in the 140 year Masters. 25 This season a small group of under 17 and under 19 boys and girls ran throughout the summer under the watchful coaching of former under 18 and now masters Australian Champion Ross Collins. Luckily not many training days were lost to rain on what was a wet summer. Coaching was held on Sunday mornings and running style and fitness were the key objectives. The group consisted of Gemma Sammut, Kate Chiswell, Ellen Goldsmith, Olivia Kelleher, Jack Goldsmith, Simon Metcalfe, Jake Sammut, Dan Riggiletti and Alexa Collins. Juggling school sport on Saturday mornings and HSC did not help with competition at carnivals although the team did manage to compete at Queenscliff, Manly and Narrabeen Branch Championships. Gemma ran with the Open Relay (Laura Shorter and masters Kylie Stewart and Annabell Nelson) at Queenscliff and the team placed in the top 4. Manly proved a much harder carnival with competitors from across Australia competing on what had to be the wettest surf carnival ever attended. However, Ellen ran well and made the final and Jack was a semi finalist - both good results in strong fields. RUNNERS REPORT Medal winners at Aussies were: 8 Gold 2 Kylie Stewart Sprint & Flags 1 Andrew Fortis Flags 1 Michael Gedz Sprint 1 Paul Hammond Sprint Men s Relay John Cooper, Bob Wilson, Ross Collins, Steve Hoy Women s Relay Peta Saunders, Helen Porter, Tina Martin, Suzanne Brown Women s Relay Allison Tucker, Kylie Stewart, Robyn Henderson, Annabel Nelson 6 Silver 2 Bob Wilson Sprint & Flags 1 Robyn Henderson Sprint 1 Jason Johansson Flags 1 Steve Nelson Sprint Men s Relay Steve Nelson, Michael Gedz, Paul Hammond, Brian Dolly 3 Bronze 1 Annabel Nelson Sprint 1 Robyn Henderson Flags 1 Helen Porter 2 Km Run Sadly Gero Farruggio was injured and could not compete. At the Branch Titles, the team had success when Alexa placed 3rd in the flags and earlier in the day, Simon placed 2nd in the 2km run. In the Open s Laura Shorter was our only serious competitor. Laura competed well for Australia in a series in New Zealand with a win in the sprints and a third in the flags. On her return to Australia Laura was plagued by injury but with the support of coach, Michael Gedz and help from Australian Water Polo physio Liz Daniels made the open sprint final at Aussies for a courageous fifth place. Laura has now made the Australian final the last 4 years with two wins, a fourth and a fifth. The masters again performed strongly at Branch, State and Aussies with some outstanding performances. Kylie Stewart was the outstanding performer at Aussies with gold medals in the sprint, flags and relay. In her 4 years of competing for Queenscliff, Kylie has won 12 Australian Masters Championships. Robyn Henderson and Michael Gedz were outstanding all season, both winning three gold at Branch and State while Robyn s gold, silver and bronze at Aussies just trumped Michael s gold and silver. Michael was unbeaten all season in the sprint. There was some thrilling racing at Aussies particularly in the relays where Queenscliff won the Women s 200 relay for the first time. Helen Porter won her first Australian gold medal in that event. Andrew Fortis won his first Australian gold medal in the flags. Jason Johansson bravely competed against Andrew after injuring his hamstring to claim the silver medal. Of course its not just the medal winners that make up a team or allow a team to compete and we all owe a huge thank you not only to our officials, Brian, Ray and Jeanine but to all the officials including Gary Cook of Newport, Bob Langbein of Collaroy and all their team. These men and women are on the beach long before the competitors and are cleaning up long after. Michael Gedz coached the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch team that won the NSW Interbranch Titles, coached Laura and was age manager for the U7 Nippers at Queenscliff. Steve Nelson was age manager for nippers again as well as winning gold and silver at State and two silver at Aussies. There are also the members of the team who contribute enormously to the camaraderie and team spirit. There are the Col White s and Shearsby s, Mel Way s and Sue McGinley s who fill in whenever asked. We have to also thank out wonderful photographers Shelly Hoy and Liz Collins and of course our number one supporter Peter Daley who is always there cheering for the Queenscliff caps. The runners are all looking forward to the season, World Championships in Adelaide in November 2012 and Australian Titles in March PAUL HAMMOND 21

Our encouraging ninth place in the final of the Aussie titles last year gave us the impetus to do well this season. We were blessed by the return of Ray Isaacs (last season s Queensie Coach of the Year), his wife, Jeanette, and Gary Cook for the fourth consecutive year. Their level of commitment to us has been remarkable, considering Ray and Gary also coached the Warriewood ladies team. Even more remarkable is that Ray took on the additional coaching role with Collaroy men s team which won the NSW title this year. And among his many administrative roles, Gary is current chairman of the National March Past Panel. The usual loyal subjects came out of hibernation last October for the start of training. Regrettably, we have had no recruits to our ranks for some years. This problem was compounded by orthopaedic injuries that required Piper to miss the season altogether and Terry Boardman to make himself available as a reserve only. So the run-on side became Col Harrison (standard bearer), Rodger Whiteman (beltman), George Prescott, Steve Beaumont, Tony Foster and Mal Armour (reel party), Mike Laurence and Barry Miles (pivots), with Graham Job, Ian Saunders, Grant Spradbrow and Neil Crummy making up the back line. We also benefited from John Burrell coming out of retirement to fill in on a few occasions, and from Col White making himself available as a back-up. MARCH PAST REPORT dividends. We finished in the top half, coming fourth out of eight. For the State carnival at Kingscliff, we arrived on the Friday so we could get three training sessions in before competing on the Sunday. While commitment was there, we were disappointed with sixth out of nine, even though we were beaten by very good teams. However, to our great joy, it was then announced that we had won the gold in the handicap point score, judged over that carnival, along with those at Queenscliff, North Cronulla, Wanda, Manly, Freshwater and Coogee. This was our second handicap gold at State in the past three titles. What made the victory sweet were that we had tried so hard all season, the win was an indication of gradual improvement and we brought home the only open gold medal for Queensie. We were all deeply moved by the tragic death of Maroochydore s Matthew Barclay at the Aussie Championships. What made the moment more poignant for us was that we arrived for our first training session on Kurrawa Beach only minutes after he went missing during an under 15 rescue board event. In the circumstances, our preliminary final and all other events set down for the Friday were cancelled and the events were moved to North Kirra Beach. This season we set a goal of attending all the carnivals. The thinking behind this was that we would improve with each outing and enhance our chances in the handicap point-score competitions at both branch and state levels. So we competed at carnivals from Palm Beach to North Cronulla, including the Masters carnivals at Freshwater and Collaroy, nine in total. It has always seemed to be a bridge too far for us to beat the champion sides like Collaroy men s and ladies teams, Freshwater, North Cronulla and Burning Palms. However, the occasional win over quality teams like these gave us hope of becoming part of that echelon. Still, the placings were not encouraging, with all but one of the first nine carnivals being at the back half of the field. The one exception was at Freshie where we came an impressive third from 11 starters. The coaches were adamant that we had the potential of being a very competitive side, and never lost heart with us. They were rewarded when we won the silver medal in the handicap point score at the Narrabeen Branch Carnival. In addition to this carnival, the handicap was judged on results from our own carnival, along with Palm Beach, Manly and Freshwater carnivals. Training regularly at Narrabeen Beach prior to the event to assimilate to the unusual sand paid On the Sunday, 25 open teams competed in the March Past final. With a full complement of judges, three adjudicated on each of the eight disciplines (such as arm swing and leg action). The highest and lowest scores are disregarded, and the middle score is used to tally the total penalty points. Six teams had a lower tally of penalty points than the ultimate winner, Glenelg, on 13 (with Queensie on 16). But Glenelg s middle score tally was lowest at 3.01 compared with our So while we did relatively well in finishing equal 12th with three other teams (including our nemesis, Manly), the count-back system had us relegated to 15th place. We were consoled by the fact that just two adjusted points separated the first 15 teams. It was great to have the support at the Aussies from two former Queensie March Past characters. Bob Newton, who segued from marching to coach for five seasons to judging, cast an experienced eye over us at training. And Tony Johnson helped out at training while we were one short. We look forward to resting our aching joints over the winter break before mounting another campaign for glory in the red-and-blue. STEVE BEAUMONT 22

Queenscliff hosted three carnivals this season, the annual Queenscliff Open and Nipper Carnivals and the Australian Interstate Championships (Ocean). QUEENSCLIFF OPEN AND NIPPER CARNIVALS The first carnivals of the season were the Open and Nipper carnivals on the 3rd and 4th of December Both carnivals were fortunately held in relatively favourable surf and weather conditions compared to what we experienced at Queenscliff for most of this season. They ran exceedingly smoothly with no major incidents at either. On balance, the carnivals were well attended by a large number of competitors and the good weather ensured that the BBQs and drink stalls were doing a great business. Holding the carnivals on the Saturday and Sunday of the one weekend significantly reduced the amount of behind-the-scenes organisation and effort required, though from many reports there were some very tired people by Sunday night. As well as reducing costs, streamlining approvals and gear hire, it reduced duplication getting infrastructure, people and equipment in place. Despite some hiccups with the new Branch ATV vehicle, which proved a challenge until Barry Antella showed it some love, the coordination between Queenscliff and the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch surf sports team was very good. A big thank you to the host of new nipper parents and friends, who lent a hand at both carnivals and relieved the burden on the older crew. The club led the way in putting competitor safety first and foremost, ensuring that it exceeded recommended water safety and risk management requirements to great success. Queenscliff's water safety crew, led by Jayson Elkins and his IRB teams, set the benchmark that few other clubs or carnivals matched. They were always there, on the spot ready to assist and keeping a watchful eye. James Keane ran a tight ship with the First Aid resources, delivering top-class aid to those in need. CARNIVALS REPORT AUSTRALIAN INTERSTATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Queenscliff once again hosted the Ocean and Beach component of the Australian Interstate Championships for the 3rd year running on the 23rd of January, Queenscliff's role was to provide the venue, workforce and water safety for the Surf Life Saving Australia-run event. Unfortunately, the winds and surf did not cooperate and we were forced to relocate the events to South Steyne. Queenscliff members responded magnificently to the last-minute change of location and were able to have the carnival back up and running within 90 minutes at the safer section of the beach. Surf Life Saving Australia's Surf Sports Management Committee praised Queenscliff's contribution to the event, particularly our water safety teams who worked long hours both at the pool events held at the Aquatic Centre, at Homebush and at the surf at South Steyne. These carnivals all highlighted the great club spirit and wealth of talent the club has in its ranks. Supporting our competitors at each of these carnivals was a group of people who contributed enormous amounts of their time and talents to providing first-class First Aid, water safety, traffic management, catering, cooking, administration and logistics services as well as the tireless efforts of our great officials. Without them, these carnivals could not happen, I would like to thank them all for their help this season and look forward to meeting more members next season, stepping up and giving us a hand. Lastly, I would like to thank our fantastic sponsors for their support, particularly Balgowlah RSL, Cunningham's Real Estate and Manly Council. PHIL BIRD 23

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The Club Championships were again held before the Christmas party and on a sunny Queenscliff day with over 100 members strutting their stuff for the chance to be the Club champion of their age group. The competition was fierce and quite often very funny with no one letting anyone get an unfair advantage unless they got it themselves. This made it a busy day for the starters and judges to ensure that standards of previous club championships were upheld. There were many helpers on the day but I would especially like to thank Kathryn Shearsby, Martina Boyce, Julie Slennett, Craig Susans and Greg Heard for their efforts in making sure the day went off without any problems and protests. The results were as follows: GIRLS BOYS U15s Sita Paling 31 Evan Sammutt 23 Charlie McGrath 22 Ben Pierce 21 Teneal Brown 20 Edward Goodall 9 U17s Bella Boyce 37 Hugh Walton 39 Briella Brown 29 Ben Schafer 18 Simone Shearsby 21 William Walton 13 U19s Jess Duncan 24 Simon Metcalfe 30 Harry Hayes 21 Jacob Sammutt 20 Open Arielle Bird 35 Simon Metcalfe 18 Jess Duncan 14 Ben Schafer 15 Bella Boyce 11 Mitchell Daniel yrs Michelle Sursok 12 Chris Maker 37 Jo Farruggio 10 Troy Andrews 22 Shuan Sursok yrs Robyn Henderson 28 Dave Slennett 27 Suzanne Brown 23 Grant Henderson 26 Maree White 14 Brian Dolly yrs Helen Porter 18 Neil Schafer 12 Sue McGinley 15 Ross Collins 11 Ian Johnson yrs Peter Allison 27 Bob Wilson 11 Paul Hammond yrs + Col White 18 Tony Foster 10 I thank everyone for competing and making the day an enjoyable one, and look forward to a bigger and better club championship in ROB DANIEL 24

We had a decrease in the number of participants in each race from last year s series. The race consisted of a run/walk to North Steyne pipe and a swim back to Queenscliff when conditions permitted. On the days when the surf was unfavourable there was a walk/jog/run to the pipe and back followed by eight laps of the ocean pool. There were only six people who had competed in three or more races to be eligible for the overall and handicap prizes. These were Jason Healey (5), Zoe Healey (5), Declan Murray (5), Malcolm Armour (5), Peter Daley (3) and Arthur Kelleher (3). 34 THE BALGOWLAH RSL SWIM FOR SAXON The Balgowlah RSL Swim for Saxon was blessed with perfect conditions and weather for a swim in the beautiful water off Queenscliff 14th April The 271 swimmers who participated enjoyed warm, clear water and skies, slight seas and a very high level of swimming. The swim was again well supported by a large number of sponsors ensuring place getters in all ages were rewarded with fantastic prizes and Queenscliff was able to put a great event. Thanks to the attendance of our VIP's Shane Gould, Tony Abbott. Mike Baird, Helen and Hay the swim gained incredible coverage in all the media. The feedback from a wide range of swimmers and onlookers was that it was one of the best run swims that they had attended, particularly the professionalism with which all facets were conducted, from presentations and public announcements to marshalling and water safety. The Queenscliff Nippers added fantastic atmosphere, colour and raised the decibel levels with their encouragement of the swimmers as they crossed the finish line. 36 BELL RECOVERY MISSION CLUB SNIPPETS MANLY TO FRESHWATER NATIONAL SURFING RESERVE Queenscliff won a bell used by the Fire Brigade on a Dennis fire engine in the late 40 s. The bell was first prize used in a competition between the Fire Brigade, the North Head Army Boys, the local Police and Queenscliff Surf Club. The bell was then used as a Shark Bell and was positioned on the Rocky Headland at the Northern end of Queenscliff beach. One of our patrolling members would carry the bell across the beach and hang it on a pole for the days patrol. A patrol member who was in default in patrols or otherwise being punished wood sit with the bell in the Blazing sun all day. The bell would be rung in the event of a shark sighting. Unfortunately the bell disappeared in the late 60 s and best guess was when our clubhouse was being rebuilt. Its whereabouts were unknown until 2011 when it was located at a bar in Sabang in the Philippines. Jim Young was notified of its whereabouts at a meeting at the Steyne Hotel and negotiations commenced to retrieve the bell. In last years Annual Report we were able to report of the September 2011 dedication of the Manly to Freshwater National Surfing Reserve and the part Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club had played in this coming about. Manly to Freshwater was declared a World Surfing Reserve in March This is one of three beaches in the world to be given this honour, the others being Waikiki in Hawaii and Malibu in California. The Club has been proud to be part of this process from inception and to have seen it through to its adoption. After several months of negotiations with Marti of Marti s Bar in Sabang a deal was struck. He agreed to return the bell if we were able to provide him with a replacement bell. Jim was able to locate a replacement bell at the Manly Markets. He purchased it and donated it to the club. The replacement bell came from the SS Bermuda, a passenger liner that used to travel between New York and the Caribbean prior to the 2nd World War. Jim then looked for someone to assist him to travel to the Philippines on the bell retrieval mission. Past president and life member Peter Daley agreed to travel with Jim to Sabang to recover our bell. They met with club member and ex SNBCU Chief Executive Bill Gowenlock in the Philippines who agreed to assist. On investigation it appears the Hall family found the bell at Queenscliff at the time of our club renovations. It remained in their hands until brothers Barry and Rodney who had moved to Sabang agreed to donate it to Marti s Bar. It is a tradition in the Philippines that all bars have a bell, which is rung to signify Happy Hour or a patron shouting the bar. The man who located the bell was Mark the shark Barlow, who was in attendance at the handover. Jim made a big mistake and rung the bell signifying his wiliness to shout the bar. Peter and Jim left Bill at Manilla airport and after some problems with customs were able to return the bell to Queenscliff. It s days as a shark bell are finished and it now proudly hangs behind the bar - a reminder of days past at Queenscliff. WIN AND NEW RECORD IN THE HAWKESBURY CANOE CLASSIC On Sunday 24 October 2011, Damien Daley and Scott Miles won the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic race by beating the previous record. 550 paddlers took part in 359 canoes. They covered the grueling 111km course in 7h 50 min 10 sec, beating the previous winning time of 7h 56min set in The pair raced in a custom-made prototype double ski. It is something we worked very hard for said DD; it took them two months of preparation, training multiple times a week, before and after work. Depart was at 6pm, the majority of the race took place in the darkness, with the extra challenge of changing tides. Congratulations to Damien and Scott. 32

CLUB SNIPPETS MATT PRESS AT THE QUEEN DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT Matt Press was part of the team of 29 Australian Surf Lifesavers rowing down the Thames for the Queen on Sunday 3rd June Nine surfboats crewed by Australian surf lifesavers were among the 1,000 vessels in the river-borne celebration of Her Majesty s 60-year reign. Participants from the nation that invented surf lifesaving took to the water ahead of the Royal Barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, on which The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and members of the Royal Family were aboard. For many watching what is being billed as the greatest show the Thames has ever seen, including over one million flag-waving spectators on the riverbank, Australia s contribution was a familiar image albeit far from home. NADIA JONES HAIR-RAZING TRIBUTE On Saturday 12th of March, Nadia had her long blonde hair shaved off by Tom Atkinson at the clubhouse. Nadia decided to shave in honour of her aunt, Nanine Parle, who died from leukaemia last year. She also decided to donate all of her 50cm long hair to the Alopecia Foundation, allowing it to be made into a wig for a sufferer. In the process Nadia managed to raise $5000 for the Laekaemia Foundation. Congratulations to Nadia and family and thank you to all club members present for their support. 33

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Garry joined Queenscliff in 1993, gained his Bronze the same season and is a current patrolling member who completed 19 seasons of patrol with over 470 patrol hours. Over the years, Garry has trained countless numbers of members for SRC, Bronze Medallions and more recently Advanced Resuscitation Techniques. Garry ensures that all candidates are trained to a high standard and also mentors new award members to take on the role of training officer and assist them to improve their training techniques and knowledge in Surf Life Saving. Garry is a member of SNB Board of Examination and Assessment and each season carries out proficiencies and assessments at Queenscliff, assessments at our neighbouring clubs and attends the ARTC assessments at Branch once a month. Garry currently holds 44 Life Saving awards along with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Garry is a worthy recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. GARRY FOX Paul joined Queenscliff in 1999, gained his Bronze the same season and is a current patrolling member who completed 13 seasons of patrol with over 550 patrol hours. Congratulations, Paul, on the receipt of your award. Over those years, Paul has shown dedication in training, mentoring and assessing new members to Surf Life Saving. His training approach nurtured and developed many of the Queenscliff members that are on patrol today. In 2007, Paul took on the role of Chief Instructor and an active Committee Member. Under the role of Chief Instructor he ensured that all candidates are trained to a high standard and has ensured there is a program to develop trainers within the club. In the 2010/11 season, Paul has overseen 260 new awards. Paul is a member of SNB Board of Examination and Assessment and each season carries out proficiencies and assessments at Queenscliff and our neighbouring clubs. Paul currently holds 40 Life Saving awards. As a testament to Paul s dedication to training and assessment, he was named the SNB Assessor of the Year. PAUL TAYLOR 34

VALE BRIAN SNIFFY THURLOW Brian joined Queenscliff Surf Club in the late 1960 s. Even though he had many mates as members at the other end of the beach, Brian chose Queensie as his club. He was involved in competition from the start. Getting involved with the boats at an early stage. Not being a swimmer of note, Brian was a regular starter in the Sunday club swim. Brian s other love was long distance running. Many a club member can recall the memorable run s Brian would take us on around the local & further afield environs. These events were enviable followed up with a rehydration session at the Fisho s or Steyne. Brian married Bev in the 80 s & soon after moved to Perth with his job in security at Reserve Bank. He joined Cottosloe Surf club, & was a regular in their club swims, he was also involved with the Perth Marathon club. Brian kept in touch his mates at Queensie. He was always keen to catch up with any of us visiting the West, be it at surf titles or winter swim champs. He always had a friendly welcome, followed by a few beers. Brian will be sadly missed by wife Bev, daughter Brooke, sister Beryl & brother Ray. Plus his many mates. BILL COOPER In February 2012, Queenscliff lost a member, Bill Cooper. His son Matthew wrote a letter to Piper who attended the funeral along with Jack, Peter and Col. Dear, With mourning completed life is somewhat back to normal having returned to Port Moresby on Tuesday after the funeral., thank you again, Jack, Peter and Col for making the trip down to Bowral earlier this week. Dad always considered you all such great mates over the years and he often talked about the surf club days fondly whenever we had the opportunity to catch up., there is certainly something special about Queenscliff Surf Lifesaving Club, it seems to bring out not only the best in all people but also creates such a bond of great mastership, comradery and respect for one another, no matter who you are, what your background, Queenscliff has never been a place for big heads and those who were never hung around long anyway. Dad I'm sure felt very lucky that he had been a part of this great mateship for so many years, I believe I would be right in saying that he missed his time at Queenscliff after he moved away from Sydney, something I am sure he regretted. He thought highly of these mates and the many people he worked with there over the years. We would laugh when together at old stories from the past, Bob Berry falling over the stair rail was just one of many or his Bourke to Berrwarrina trip with the boaties. Even after all of these years I could still come out with a story that he did not know, something that had stayed hidden after a National Titles tour. He just loved being a part of it, again something that Queenscliff Surf Lifesaving Club just seems to bring out in people. Again, thank you for being in attendance on Monday, the presence of yourself, Peter, Jack and Col meant a great deal to Bronwyn and myself, having you all there to represent the Surf Club was as important as having family there, again, that is just Queensie. Your sincerely, Matthew Cooper 35

He was elevated to Distinguished Service in Season maintaining his membership of the Club and a keen and supportive interest in it s affairs and success. To Vera we extend our condolences and as a Club we will miss his humour and encouragement. RAY BLACKETT For many years during the 60 s, 70 s and the 80 s, Ray was a great supporter and worker for the club. Ray marched with the club for many years. He was a donor in kind from its own and from business associates. BRIAN GRAY Brian joined the club as a junior, then gaining his bronze medallion. He was actively involved in the club and used his skills as an engineer and project manager to build the upstairs members section on the old clubhouse. He moved to Hawaii in the 1960 s but still kept in contact with many members. 36
