EPIC EAST COAST AND LABRADOR 05 JULY TO 25 JULY NIGHTS / 21 DAYS Overview This exciting 20 night voyage provides the most in depth exploration of east coast Canada ever offered. On this voyage we witness the transition from the milder Maritimes region into the higher Arctic latitudes. The climate, scenery, vegetation and wildlife all change as we navigate along the coastline of Labrador heading for Baffin Island. This is one of the most historic regions in North America. Inuit, European and even Viking history can be found here. Today, the region offers fascinating cultural diversity, found in the small villages and towns that dot the coastline. Wildlife is a major highlight and we encounter this on daily shore excursions, cruising in our zodiac boats and from the expansive outer decks of the ship. The cuisine of eastern Canada is world famous, with an emphasis on the wonderful locally sourced seafood of the region influencing our menu on this voyage. If you wish to explore this spectacular region of Canada, this could be the voyage you have been looking for. As with all our expeditions, safety is our top priority. For that reason weather and sea conditions may require us to change our itinerary and shore excursions as we go but that is half the fun of small ship expedition cruising. Day By Day Expedition Itinerary July 5, 2017 Louisbourg, Nova Scotia Our adventure begins in the historic port town of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, where we board our expedition vessel, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov. First visited in 1597 by the English, the town was fortified in 1713 by the French in recognition of its strategic maritime location. During the 18th century, Louisbourg was the third busiest seaport in North America. We board the ship in the late afternoon in time for a dinner of fresh, local lobster as we sail out past the lighthouse, into the North Atlantic - and onto the Grand Banks. July 6, Sable Island National Park Reserve, Nova Scotia Located on the edge of the Grand Banks, hundreds of kilometers from the coast, Sable Island has a storied history as a graveyard of ships, with more than 350 ships falling victim to the treacherous currents and sandbars. Sporadically inhabited by sealers, shipwreck survivors and salvagers, the island is now home to fewer than six year-round inhabitants, a herd of wild horses and one of the largest gray seal colonies in the world. It is an important stopover for numerous migratory bird species as they make their way to and from the High Arctic regions. Sable Island forms one of Canada s newest national parks and we explore the long sand beaches.

July 7, Bird Island and Englishtown, Nova Scotia We return to Cape Breton and continue our exploration of this beautiful island by stopping in Englishtown. We have a few options in this area. The Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills on Bird Island might call us as we put the zodiacs down in the water, or perhaps heading into the community of Englishtown will be of interest. The Gaelic College in Cape Breton is a short bus ride away from the beach where we disembark. The region can be explored by sea kayak, stand up paddleboard, zodiac or bicycle all alongside our expert guides and naturalists who will share their excitement for the destination along the way. July 8, 2017 Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island In September of 1864, representatives from the British Colonies in North America met in Charlottetown to discuss Confederation. On July 1st, 1867, the Dominion of Canada came into being. Today, we anchor just offshore Prince Edward Island near the town of North Rustico. From here we can split off in several directions. A tour into Charlottetown for those interested in a day in town is an option, or perhaps a visit to Green Gables, or spend a few hours at the island s famous Cavendish beach (with a mandatory sampling of Cows Ice Cream!) Another enticing option could be a leisurely bicycle ride along the Confederation Trail or the Coastal Drive. A round of golf on one of the islands celebrated golf courses, or a kayak paddle in Rustico Bay. You will be welcomed back to the ship for a dinner of fresh Atlantic seafood as we travel north to the Magdalen Islands. July 9, 2017 Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine (The Magdalen Islands), Quebec Sculpted out of sandstone, these islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence are home to unique fishing communities with beautifully maintained waterfront houses and boats, flowing grassy plains and sandstone shorelines sculpted by the elements. In addition to the traditional fishing and sealing culture found in the islands, we will encounter a wide diversity of bird and sea life. Europeans first discovered the islands in the mid 15th century, though it s thought indigenous Miíkmaqs had been visiting for centuries to hunt walrus. Quebecois and Acadian culture runs strongly through the towns and villages of the islands, through local cuisine, craft and language. The island s gentle terrain is a cyclist s paradise, while the sea kayaking and stand up paddle boarding through sea arches and into sandstone sea caves is superb. Otherwise you might enjoy a whale-watching cruise in the zodiacs or head to the beach to soak up some sun or build sand castles! July 10, 2017 Isle Bonaventure (Bonaventure Island) and the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec At Bonaventure Island we drop the anchor near the town of Percé and explore the island by zodiac. This location has a rich natural, historic, and geological heritage. Sculpted over time by the sea, the island is situated at the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. The outstanding flora and fauna, including its famous colony of Northern Gannets make it a must-see location. Almost 300 different species of birds have been recorded as visiting, migrating to, or living on Bonaventure Island. An afternoon visit to the community of Percé will provide a window into the rich fishing culture of French-Canada. Zodiac cruising, sea kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are all activities that can be undertaken here, weather permitting. July 11, 2017 Anticosti Island, Quebec At the mouth of the St. Lawrence River where the river water mixes with Arctic waters from the Strait of Belle Isle and the more temperate Atlantic waters, Anticosti Island is rich in marine wildlife. We plan to hike along the beaches near the eastern end of the island followed by a zodiac cruise along the cliffs at East Point. We hope to observe several species of shorebirds and seabirds as well as whales and seals, which are frequent visitors

to the island's waters. Bald eagles soaring along the shoreline, deer in the woods and whales just offshore are all common sights in this location. July 12, 2017 Gros Morne National Park and Woody Point, Newfoundland Sailing into majestic Bonne Bay, in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, the cliffs soar up out of the water and are covered in a green blanket of tuckamore forest windswept spruce sculpted by the ocean breeze. At Woody Point we are welcomed ashore by a delegation from the community before hiking up to the excellent interpretation center. From there, various guided walks take us into the World Heritage-listed Tablelands and to the lookout for a view over much of the park a spectacular experience! A boreal wetland landscape, featuring dramatic rock ridges, pitcher plants, white-throated sparrows and perhaps even a moose could all be encountered as we explore the park. The twisting mountain road to Trout River makes for a challenging bike ride with our guides or a paddle along the shore of Bonne Bay provide yet another activity. July 13, 2017 Francois, Newfoundland The community of Francois (pron. Fran-sway) on the south coast of Newfoundland - was settled in the late 1700s. Small boat fishers harvested a variety of species during the summer fishing season. Francois s rich fishing heritage also included operation of a whale factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as an out-port, and accessible only by boat or from the air by helicopter, Francois has a deep harbor which is navigable year-round. When entering Francois harbor, we are first greeted by one of the few remaining manned light stations anywhere on the coast of Newfoundland. Once past the light, the narrow opening leading into the steep-walled rocky fjord amazes us. This is a spectacular location and for many, a highlight of the trip. July 14, 2017 Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, France Saint-Pierre et Miquelon are a small group of islands situated off the south coast of Newfoundland. They were first settled by the French in the early 17th century and today, the islands represent the sole remaining vestige of France s once vast North American empire. Walking down the streets feels like taking a stroll through a provincial French town. As a part of France, the area has much in common with Europe, but also with its Canadian and American neighbors. There's an excellent puffin colony here and, if weather permits, we cruise in the zodiacs to see these colorful birds. Tonight we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain to mark the end of our voyage through Canada s spectacular Atlantic provinces. July 15, 2017 Louisbourg, Nova Scotia We sail back to Cape Breton across the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, heading again for the historic port of Louisbourg. Today is a free day to explore the town. If you did not visit the historic fort prior to embarkation, this is an excellent opportunity to explore this historic landmark and learn something of the early European history. Others may take the opportunity to explore the town on foot there are some great local hikes in the area. Several restaurants feature wonderful local produce on their menu. In the afternoon, return to the ship and set sail, bound for Labrador and into the Arctic. July 16, 2017 Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland Today we make a second visit to the outstanding Gros Morne National Park. This morning we are anchored off the tiny fishing community of Trout River, an alternative access point into the park. Our zodiacs take us ashore and we are transferred by bus for visit to the World Heritage-listed Tablelands. This incredible location is noted for its unique geology and exceptional scenery. Here, the Earth s mantle is exposed on the surface pushed up over millions of years by the movement of tectonic plates. We explore the boreal wetland landscape, featuring

dramatic rock ridges, pitcher plants, white-throated sparrows and may encounter the iconic moose as we explore the park. Continuing north through the park we enjoy a visit to the Discovery Centre, before arriving at Woody Point. We meet the ship here, re-boarding in the afternoon and continue our voyage northwards. July 17, 2017 L anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland Today tells a story a thousand years in the making. We board the zodiacs for a short cruise to the rocky shoreline. A millennium ago, Viking long-ships would have been found along this same beach. L Anse aux Meadows is one of Canada s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is where Norseman, Leif Erikson, (son of Eric the Red) - is thought to have founded Vinland around 1000 AD. As we explore the reconstructed sod huts and Norse ruins with the site s resident archaeologist, we see evidence that the Vikings discovered North America some five hundred years prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus. This evening we leave the coastline of Newfoundland, crossing the Strait of Belle Isle overnight. July 18, Battle Harbour, Newfoundland Battle Harbour marks our arrival in Labrador. The location was one of the first British settlements on the east coast of the Americas. It was an important gateway to the rich Labrador fisheries. We venture ashore to explore the restored fishing, whaling, commercial buildings found in this remote community. The colourful buildings make for fantastic photographic subjects amid the backdrop of breathtaking coastal views. July 19, 2017 Hopedale, Newfoundland The ancient rocks of the Canadian Shield (the exposed portion of the Earth s crust) cradle the small coastal hamlet of Hopedale. This remarkable geological feature, estimated to be up to 4-billion-years-old greet us as we sail through narrow channels and weigh anchor off Hopedale. We venture ashore by zodiac to visit the Hopedale Moravian Mission built in 1782 and said to be the oldest building east of Quebec. It s a fascinating place and we learn of the influence of the early Moravian missionaries on the Inuit people of Northern Labrador. This location has been designated a Canadian National Historic Site. We plan a visit to the local museum for a deeper insight. The local Inuit produce wonderful carvings and other crafts which make wonderful souvenirs. July 20, 2017 Hebron, Newfoundland Today we enjoy a visit to the historic town of Hebron, once the northernmost settlement in Labrador. The Moravian missionaries established Hebron in the early 1830 s and the Germanic influence is clearly seen in the architecture. The Mission was closed and the local Inuit families relocated in 1959 but the original buildings still stand today. This is another designated National Historic Site and is considered one of the most historically significant mission-built structures in the entire province. We will hope to meet Buddy and Jenny, Nunatsiavut Government ambassadors, who have been looking after the historic site for years. They have a fascinating story to tell. July 21, 2017 Torngat Mountains National Park, Saglek Fjord, Labrador We will sail into Saglek Fjord, the southern gateway to the Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve, established in We are midway through our exploration of Labrador at this point and our attention turns from history to the magnificent wilderness of the Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve. The Park was established as recently as 2005 and covers almost 10,000 square kilometres of Northern Labrador. It is bordered by Quebec on one side, and the Labrador Coast on the other. It is home to Canada s highest mountains East of the Rockies, and features breathtaking fjords, remnant glacial systems and stunning landscapes. The Inuktitut word Torngat, means place of spirits and the Torngat Mountains have been home to Inuit and their predecessors for over 7500 years. These mountains represent a very spiritual connection to

the Inuit spirit world. Polar bears hunt seals along the coast, and both the Torngat Mountains and George River caribou herds cross paths as they migrate to and from their calving grounds. Inuit continue to use this area for hunting, fishing, and travelling throughout the park during the year. There are some terrific hiking opportunities here explore the area on foot and along the shoreline in the zodiacs. Wildflowers are spectacular when in bloom and bears feast on local berries found among the sedges and grasses on the raised beaches along the shores of the fjords. July 22, 2017 Torngat Mountains National Park, Nachvak Fjord, Labrador Nachvak Fjord is exceptionally beautiful. The fjord is deep and narrow and stretches more than 20 kilometres. The rocky walls of the fjord soar almost 900 meters above us at several points. Many species migrate through the area during the short boreal summer. Numerous seal species may be encountered including ring, hooded, harp and harbour seals. Minke whales have been known to linger in the fjords, while larger species, including fin and humpback, tend to stay offshore. This is an outstanding location for landscape photography with endless subjects, a dynamic colour range interesting lighting. July 23, 2017 Button Islands, Nunavut As we reach the far northern stretches of coastal Labrador, we learn of the remarkable events at Martin Bay. Here a German U-boat made the only known armed landing in North America during WWII. In 1943, U-537 sat at anchor here, while the crew man-handled ashore and established an automated weather station. This station remained undiscovered until the late 1970 s when a German historian came across a reference to it in the German naval archives. The equipment was collected by the Canadian Coast Guard in the early 1980 s and is on permanent display in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Later in the day, we visit the Button Islands before sailing into southern Davis Strait. Named after Thomas Button who explored the area in 1612, the islands are in the middle of the upwelling of nutrients on the edge of the continental shelf. This action makes it a magnet for thousands of seabirds and other marine mammals. July 24, 2017 Monumental Island, Nunavut Today we will sail across the mouth of Frobisher Bay and make landfall on Monumental Island, a small, steepsided outcrop off the southeast coast of Baffin Island. Here we are on the lookout for polar bears. We enjoy our final zodiac cruise here among the ice bergs and seasonal sea ice. Harp seals can sometimes be found on the ice floes a tasty meals for the local bears! This evening we reflect on our epic exploration of Canada s magnificent east coast as we cruise into the broad expanse of Frobisher Bay. We enjoy a sumptuous farewell dinner, attended by the Captain of the ship. During the night the ship will negotiate the narrow channels of the bay on the way to our disembarkation point, Iqaluit, the capital city of Nunavut. July 25, 2017 Iqaluit, Nunavut We bid farewell to our crew and disembark the ship by zodiac and, after a short tour of Iqaluit (if time and tides permit) we transfer to the airport for out flight back to Ottawa. On arrival in Ottawa, an airport transfer is provided to a central downtown location. About our itinerary Small ship expedition cruising can sometimes be unpredictable. Specific sites visited will depend on prevailing weather and sea conditions at the time of sailing. The above itinerary should be read as a 'guide only' and may change. The ship's Captain in conjunction with the Expedition Leader continually review the sailing plan throughout the voyage, making adjustments to the itinerary along the way to take advantage of optimal weather and sea conditions or to maximise our encounters with wildlife. Years of experience spent exploring these waterways mean we have plenty of outstanding landing sites and zodiac cruising locations to

consider, even when the weather conditions may not be ideal. A flexible approach is something we encourage you to bring to the ship. Before you Book Important Voyage Details Proof of our Commitment - When travelling with One Ocean Expeditions, you will discover how much we care about the places and people we visit. We demonstrate this by finding ways to give back as well as taking away so many incredible memories. For more information on our commitment to responsible tourism, please review our document entitled, Our Environmental Commitment. Medical Documentation Once you have booked your voyage, you will be required to complete a Medical Information Form. This form must be completed, signed and returned to One Ocean Expeditions no later than 90 days prior to departure. Passport Well before traveling, please ensure you have a current passport with an accurate photo, valid for at least six months after your scheduled return flight home. Also check that your airline tickets are in exactly the same name as your passport. Some countries may require you to have a return air ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket. Budgeting It is a good idea to bring along some $US cash. There are some onboard expenses such as those incurred at the bar, in our gift shop and for satellite communication via or phone. There are also several souvenir shopping opportunities throughout the voyage including at several small villages and out ports. $CA is the preferred currency in such locations. In the French Territory of St Pierre and Miquelon, Euros are the preferred currency, though most merchants will accept either $CA or $US and credit cards. Clothes Our voyage through the Maritimes occurs during the height of the Canadian summer. The days are long and often quite warm where temperatures can climb into the mid 20 s Celsius (70 s Fahrenheit). Bring a range of casual, comfortable clothing, walking shoes, and light sweater/fleece jacket. A few layers of light to medium weight clothing will be more than sufficient. A waterproof spray jacket or mid weight Gore-Tex style jacket should be all you require as an outer layer. There are opportunities throughout the voyage for lengthy hikes on shore of up to several kilometers. In a number of locations, it will be possible to enjoy a guided tour by bicycle. For other active guests, there ll be an opportunity to try standup paddle boarding and sea kayaking. The east coast is also home to beautiful beaches, so why not pack your swimsuit? Add a cap or hat, some sunglasses and you are all set for a visit to eastern Canada. We do provide a windproof/waterproof outer jacket and pants, as well as rubber boots. The boots might come in handy if we need to make a wet landing on a sandy beach or along a rocky shoreline. Onboard Like the weather, sea conditions can also be unpredictable. We don t not anticipate rough conditions while cruising in the Maritimes. You will be safe and comfortable aboard with your experienced crew in control of our ship, but you may suffer the effects of motion sickness, unless you have taken precautions. We recommend visiting your doctor prior to departure for medication that can help you avoid this easily treated condition. Gratuities We suggest you allow the equivalent of $US10 - $US15 a day for gratuities for the crew and expedition staff. This is usually collected just prior to the end of the cruise. Gratuities are at your discretion. Sea Kayaking, Cycling and Stand Up Paddle Boarding Our voyage through the Maritimes provides plenty

of opportunities to try sea kayaking, or paddling a stand up board. On several occasions, there will also be the opportunity to explore the locations by bike. These activities, as well as numerous hiking opportunities onshore and exploration by zodiac boat are all included in the price of your voyage. The activity program will be discussed during a briefing once aboard the ship. Embarkation Protocol Guests arrive with the rest of the group accompanied by the One Ocean Expeditions Representative. Full details of embarkation/disembarkation procedures will be supplied with your final documentation. Once onboard, you will be participating in an obligatory lifeboat drill. We will also conduct important briefings on landing procedures and Zodiac operations. Travel Insurance On all One Ocean Expeditions voyages, you must have comprehensive travel insurance. Your own domestic government medical insurance and private health care plans will not cover you in most overseas countries. Your travel agent can recommend a policy designed to cover participants on these cruises. Your policy must provide coverage for your medical costs in case of hospitalization, emergency travel and repatriation. We require that you obtain adequate insurance before joining the voyage. Cancellation insurance is also recommended. Please check the terms of your policy carefully, particularly with regard to limits of cover (i.e. replacement of photographic equipment, baggage loss, claims procedure, costs due to airline delays etc). Also ensure you are familiar with the procedure for making claims (for example, most policies stipulate that claims must be made within a certain time after completion of your journey).once you have paid your deposit or full payment, certain fees will apply if you have to cancel your holiday (see the cancellation provisions in our terms and conditions). For this reason you should take out insurance at the time of paying your deposit, which should then protect you in such a situation. Visas Commencing in March 2016, Canada will be introducing and Electronic Travel Authorization (eta) program. Under this program citizens from countries other than the United States (who do not need a visa to enter Canada) will need to obtain an online authorization before flying to Canada. A fee of CA$7 is payable for processing an application for an electronic travel authorization. An application must be made online with the Department (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) for that purpose. An electronic travel authorization is valid for a period of five years from the day on which it is issued. If you plan any side trips to other countries you will need to investigate visa requirements as it is your responsibility to ensure you have all required visas for your trip. Rules and regulations governing the issuance of visas are constantly changing and vary for different nationalities. You should check visa requirements with your travel agent or relevant consular authority well before traveling. The information provided here is given in good faith and has been compiled with all reasonable care. However, some of the information may become out of date. Please keep this in mind and check with us if you want to be sure about anything. The document was correct at time of printing but you can check online for the most up to date version. If you have any queries, please contact your travel agent or our staff. We are here to help you! (updated FEB 17_SG)
