2 What is Optus Junior Dolphins? Optus Junior Dolphins is an exciting program created by Swimming Australia where kids can have fun with their friends and improve their swimming in a safe, social and non-competitive environment. Programs are designed to run for a maximum of 2 hours, comprised of a series of fun team based activities and races, with a strong focus on participation not competition. Optus Junior Dolphins is a key part of our pathway and supports kids with basic swimming skills as they continue their swimming journey, while helping your swimming Club attract new members and retain old ones. Why run Optus Junior Dolphin Programs at your Club? As this is a Swimming Australia (SAL) Program, there are plenty of perks that come with running OJD programs such as: SAL will feature your Club on their website ( in their interactive Swim Finder, so parents can search for you, when looking for their nearest Delivery Centre. SAL Provide your Club with an operations manual, program curriculum and a carnival guide to help you plan and implement your program. SAL will send a free participant pack with a t-shirt and bag to every new Optus Junior Dolphins participant at your Club who is aged between 5 and 8 SAL will provide the hosting Club with OJD give-a-ways for the program such as drink bottle, pencil cases, beach balls and more. Every child aged 7 and under will get free membership to swimming Clubs across Australia and kids aged 8 and under are eligible for half price memberships. Your coaches/instructors will have access to learning resources supplied by SAL. How to implement an OJD carnival Swimming WA recommends Clubs implement Optus Junior Dolphins via one of the following methods: OJD Come and Try: This is a 30 minuet session at the beginning of existing Club swim meets. Clubs use Austswim accredited Swimming instructors (preferably) or accredited coaches who run a series of activities. Example come and try session: o Whole group warmupo Round robin of activities (2-4 depending on numbers)- see attached for examples o Whole group game or relay (for example, if there is a small group of kids- up to 10- a game such as Pidgeon would be good, and for larger groups a noodle relay) o Wrap up- talk about free Junior Dolphins membership, how they could join your Club and what your Club has to offer.

3 OJD Swim Meets: Follow similar format to Club meets, with more of a focus on younger audience (11 years old and younger). Run more team activities than races. No officials required Keep meet short, no longer then 2 hours Example OJD meet: o Whole group warmup (if numbers are high, split into groups) o Round robin of activities (2-4 depending on numbers)- see attached for examples o Noodle/ kickboard races o Whole group game or relay (for example, if there is a small group of kids- up to 10- a game such as Pidgeon would be good, and for larger groups a noodle relay) o Wrap up- talk about free Junior Dolphins membership, how they could join your Club and what your club has to offer. OJD Workshops or Clinics: Fun activity based workshops/clinics with skill development as a secondary focus. For example, skills may include diving, tumble turns etc. Run clinics for 30-60mins Wrap up- talk about free Junior Dolphins membership, how they could join your Club and what your club has to offer. Age and Eligibility OJD carnivals are aimed at kids under the age of 7, who can take part in the carnival for free. These participants are also eligible for a free Junior Dolphin membership and participant pack. Swimming WA understands that Clubs might not be able to find enough participants under the age of 7 to take part in the carnival. Therefore, participants up to the age of 11 are eligible to take part in the programme for free but they are not eligible for the free Junior Dolphins membership.

4 Event Checklist Lane Space/Venue Equipment for activities (i.e. pool noodles, kickboards, inflatables, hula hoops, sinking toys ect.) OJD give-a-ways (i.e. water bottles, stickers ect.) Volunteers assigned roles in the following: Swimming instructors (2+ depending on number of participants registered) Announcer if running OJD swim meet OPTIONAL BBQ or catering Entertainment (i.e. appearance by dolphin mascot) Swimming WA will provide: Information on how to host and promote the programme; A programme checklist; Resources to market the meet to your own club and external members; Sponsor materials and signage to be displayed at the event; Hands on assistance (if required); Use of inflatable dolphins or boats Host Clubs are required to: Promote the event within the Swimming WA guidelines; Distribute Optus Junior Dolphins merchandise to participants; Host and deliver the programme on their assigned date(s); Take photos throughout their event and send to Swimming WA upon completion; Return any unused marketing resources and merchandise; Return sponsor signage and materials; Share copies of photos or media from the event
