4 WELCOME Welcome to season 2016/2017. On behalf of the Executive, I would like to welcome you and your family to the 2016/2017 season of Ipswich Vikings Swimming Inc. We have just had our 82 nd Annual General Meeting so as a Club we have been running for a very long time. We look forward to continuing the proud tradition of developing the techniques in the sport of swimming in a competitive and supportive environment, while fostering an enjoyment of swimming where the main competition lies in setting your own personal best time. With your support and participation, we know that the success the Club has enjoyed since its formation will continue. Please take special note of the different races that have taken place in the last few seasons will still continue this season:-. That once you have broken the 50m time for the four strokes you have the choice of swimming the 100m events to staying at 50m. Everything you need to know about your Club is contained in this booklet. Please take the time to read it. Parents/guardians should become familiar with the contents of the book ensuring that their children are familiar with the rules and procedures. Especially the following: No running around the pool deck; Stay behind the yellow line during races; No standing in front of the grandstand; No use of the 20m heated pool; and No use of the playground from 7pm. 6 CLUB FEES The following fees have been set for 2016 / 2017 by the committee at the AGM in June All swimming families will be invoiced via Swimming Australia through the club lane system. You will be sent a renewal or you can log into MyLANE to make payment. All payments must be made online with a credit card. A computer will be made available on club night to assist new members or those having difficulty. 7 FUNDRAISING We would appreciate all of our Club members to participate in our fundraising activities. A contribution envelope (One payment of $20) will be given to each family at sign-on. The contribution envelope is in lieu of having weekly raffles. Other fundraising activities will be held throughout the season, usually a chocolate drive, Easter and Christmas raffles. In lieu of participating in the chocolate drive, families have the option of simply donating $25 instead. These are the only means the Club has of raising funds. If you have any ideas for fundraising please see one of the Committee members. Also, if you know of any business houses that would be interested in sponsoring our Club please contact them or give their name to us so that they can be contacted. We are trying to form a team to co-ordinate fundraising so it won t be such a big burden on one particular person. If you can help out please talk to someone in the announcer s box on Wednesday night. Every sporting Club needs to charge fees to cover the cost of the services they provide. In order to keep these fees as affordable as possible, Clubs need to raise funds throughout the season. I ask each family to get behind their fundraising committee when they are running some fundraising activities throughout the season. 7 Page

8 THE POINTS SYSTEM From the first swim of the season, points will be allotted on the times swum by each member against his or her best time. The scale for points allotted is set out below. Grading for different distances will apply for all stroked on times, and not just FREESTYLE times. All events will be mixed i.e. girls and boys together and each heat will consist of up to 8 swimmers whose times are closest. All events will be on a handicap basis and swimmers will be handicapped in accordance with their best recorded times. On a Club night if a swimmer does not do the stroke correctly or start and finish properly, there will be no time recorded on the time sheet displayed. The referee will speak to the swimmer about the reason this happened. In turn the swimmer may speak to their coach so that help can be given to correct the problem. The swimmer will still be given one point toward their points total. (Please speak to the President if you have any questions regarding this procedure). The Club hopes that through doing this it will help swimmers when they come to swim at championships at various levels. 8 Page

9 RACE SIGN-ON Sign-on time is between 6.00pm and 6.45pm each Club night. NO NOMINATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 6.45PM ON CLUB NIGHTS. NOMINATIONS CAN BE MADE BY SMS TO SUE ON IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE The shutters will be pulled down at 6.45pm so the handicappers can prepare the race sheets. We hope this will help us to be ready to race by 7.00pm. If you know you are going to be late, contact the Club Secretary prior to Club so she can put your name on the sheets. If you arrive late you will be allowed to swim but no points will be awarded. Any swimmer competing in any stroke for the first time will be allotted one point for starting. Swimmers who break the time at 50m will be given the choice of swimming 50m or 100m each week of the stroke that they have broken the time in. 9 Page

11 CHAMPIONSHIPS ELIGIBILITY FOR ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SWIMS AS EARLY AS YOU CAN IN THE SEASON TO SAVE THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF MISSING OUT FROM COMPETING AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS AGE (a) CHAMPIONSHIP (b) (c) Must be a financial member If the competitor joins the Club between October and December, or is transferred from another Club at any time though the season (previous Club must ratify the number of swims completed by the competitor), he or she must have had at least 5 Club swims in Freestyle and Butterfly, 3 Club swims in Breaststroke, Backstroke to be eligible to enter these events at the Club Championships. If the competitor joins the Club on or after January 1 st, then he/she must have had a least 3 Club swims in Freestyle and Butterfly, 2 Club swims in Breaststroke. Age Champion will only be awarded on the four strokes Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly over a distance of 50m, except 8 years and under which will be 25m. Existing records will be carried over in the races of the same distance, if they are not broken on Championship night. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS Open Champion will be awarded on the four strokes Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly over a distance of 100m regardless of age. 11 Page

To be able to participate in these events you need to have completed the required number of swims in these distances. (That is you must have competed in 100m events to be eligible to swim those events on Championship night). A 10year and under 100m Medley will still be swum on Club Championship night but no points will be awarded in this event towards the overall distance trophy in 12 years and under age group. To be able to participate in these events you need to have completed the required number of swims in these distances. (That is you must have competed in distance events to be eligible to swim those events on Championship night). 14 POINTS FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS First - 6 points Second - 3 points Third - 2 points ** At the end of Club Championships, the swimmer with the highest points in their age group, will be named Age Champion in that Age Group. ** In the event of a tie for Age Champion, the following will apply: 1. Has the most number of firsts; 2. Has broken the most number of records. If no records have been broken, then all four times will be added together, and the swimmer with the lowest time will become Age Champion. 15 PAYMENT OF REGISTRATIONS, FUNDRAISING, NOMINATIONS FOR SWIMMING CARNIVALS ETC. The Executive Committee would encourage all members to make any monetary payments between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on a Club night. Last season saw our Treasurer handling money after Club had officially finished which meant a late night at the swim centre but even later when going home to balance the cash with receipts. Also remember the people working in the box would like to see some of their own children s races on Club nights. The Executive Committee appreciates help in this way. 15 Page

31 CARNIVAL ENTRY INFORMATION Hi, my name is David Wikner, Carnival Co-ordinator for Ipswich Vikings Swimming Club. If your child is going to register as a Competitive Swimmer, then I am your point of contact to enter external Carnivals. All Carnivals that are targeted by our Coach, Neville, are listed on our Club s website at once you have chosen the Carnival you wish to participate in open the meet flyer. This flyer will provide you with information on the location of the Carnival, the events and event numbers, warm-up, start times and cost per event, and in some cases qualifying times. For Online Meet Entry (OME) Click on the link next to the meet name on the website, this will take you to the meet entry page. Click Enter button and log in with your user name and password (provided by club registrar) and follow instructions. For Team Manager Entries You will find a link to a nomination form at the top of the page, fill this out making sure you include your child s full name as registered and date of birth the first time you enter a Carnival. Full payment needs to be made into the Vikings bank account as listed on the form, use your surname and meet name as reference. Once you have completed your form and made payment, it to me at vikingracecoordinator@gmail.com by the closing date listed on the website. This is usually one to two days before the meet closing date listed on the meet flyer.
