1 Meet the Coaches Head Coach Dan Duclos Head Coach Dan Duclos returns for his 36 th season at the helm of the RAMS Men s Swim Team. Dan hails from Patton, Pennsylvania; he is a graduate of Cambria Heights High School. He received his bachelor s degree from Harding University in Arkansas in 1977 and his master s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Since starting with the RAMS, Coach Duclos has won 14 MVC Coach of the Year awards, 20 District Coach of the Year awards, and was named State Coach of the Year in 1983, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2009, and In 2009, Coach Duclos coached Senior to its first state team title. He has also coached eleven individual state champions to nineteen state titles, five Medley Relay state champions, four 200 Free Relay state champions, and a 400 Free Relay state champion. In addition to these honors, Coach Duclos has coached 32 swimmers to 33 All-America honors. He is also a member of the Iowa High School Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Assistant Coach Jesse Huff Assistant Coach Jesse Huff is excited to begin his 5 th season as an assistant coach of the RAMS, having just finished his first season as the Head Women s Swim Coach at Dubuque Senior. Coach Huff has spent seven seasons as an assitant coach between the men's and women's teams, and has been a member of 3 MVC, 1 district, and 1 state coaching staff of the year. He has worked with swimmers who have earned 2 state titles and 7 All-America honors. Coach Huff's JV swimmers have won a combined 6 city titles and his 2015 men's team won the Patrick Karamitros JV Invitational. The men's and women's JV teams are a combined in the past three years. Away from the pool, Jesse is a 2007 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and a 2011 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. In addition to coaching, Jesse is also a World and US History teacher at Senior. 1

5 Seniors Meet the Swimmers Son of Thomas and Anne Benda. Jack returns for his 4 th year of swimming; he has also done 3 years of cross country and 4 years of track. He carries a 4.08 GPA at Wahlert, finished in 5 th place for DAYLC, is secretary of NHS, a member of NSHSS, and is on a first name basis with 3 teachers. He is also involved with Interact Club, Stop Club, Leap Club, Homecoming Court, and Debate. Jack Benda is a stupendous swimmer. He plans on qualifying for State in an individual event. He will be attending [college/university] for a degree in computer engineering. After this, he will develop the first commercial airline that takes people to Mars. Then he will combine his spaceship business with Nick Topping s automatic cow milker business and become co-dairy King of space. His favorite quote that he would like to share with his teammates is: I have 2 modes: sleep is for the weak and sleeping for a week somewhere on the internet. Jack Benda Andrew Breitfelder Son of Tim and Amy Breitfelder. Andrew returns for his 4 th year of swimming having earned a Major D last season; he also did one season of track. He is still passing his classes at Senior where his other activities include eating. I want to swim in college, but I am unsure where. I will major in business so I can make Billions! Success is the destination, determination and passion is the vehicle you arrive in. Son of Doug and Marie Colin. John is a four year member of the Rams swim team. John lists going to school as an academic accomplishment. My goals for the season are to help the team improve and achieve their goals. And also for everyone to be really, really, really fast. My college choice is the University of Iowa and my future plans are to swim for Iowa. Look up, Get up, But don t ever Give up John Colin John Dalton Son of Jeff and Sharon Dalton. John returns for his fourth season of swimming; he has also participated in tennis for 2 years and cross country for 1. He is a member of Renaissance and involved in ultimate Frisbee. After graduation, John plans on attending a college. After college, John will take his ingenious invention that cannot be discussed at this time to the investors on ABC s Shark Tank where he will be rudely denied. John will then give up on his dream and float into the sunset with Matt and Tom. In other words, his future is undecided. 5

6 Son of Tim and Julie Fetzer. Matt is a fourth year swimmer and has also played four years of tennis. He received the Presidential Scholar Award, has been on honor roll every semester, participated in DAYLC, and is on NHS. After graduation, Matt plans on attending Iowa State and studying engineering. He also plans on receiving firefighter 1 and EMT training. Matt s hobbies include camping, canoeing, and hunting. He enjoys playing the mandolin and the greatest instrument ever invented: the banjo. His proudest accomplishments include becoming and Eagle Scout and having the best sideburns in the school his junior year. Upon retirement, Matt plans on moving to the deep south and playing banjo with passing urban tourists like in the movie Deliverance. Without passion, you don t have energy; without energy you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion. Donald Trump Matt Fetzer Grant Knowles Son of Mike and Vickie Knowles. Grant is entering his fourth season on the team. My future plans are to become an astronaut to find a new planet called Tecoleagaloooo Planet. Then I ll find a land of meat so that I don t have to cook anymore. I will get my own dog that will become my butler so I don t have to do anything. Son of Jason and Liz Kubitz. Ben returns for his fourth year of swimming; he has also played football for four years, soccer for three, and baseball for one. Ben stays involved in anything having to do with sports and is an intramural volleyball stud. I am planning on attending a college to play football and major in accounting and finance. My goal for this season is to swim at districts. After college I m going to be Warren Buffet s accountant and make million and somehow find a way to steal his money without him knowing ;) Sad thing is, he s in business management so I ll stick to just working for him! To the underclassmen: Never doubt your abilities and always listen to Duclos. He s crazy but knows his stuff. He s pretty awesome. Ben Kubitz Aaron Locher Son of Todd and Caryn Locher. This is Aaron s first year of swimming; he also hurt himself after 3 weeks of track and was cut from the bowling team. He plans to try track one more time. Aaron was the American legion runner up in 8 th grade. He is NHS president and has been on Student Council for 3 years. I plan on attending the University of Iowa in the fall to study pharmaceutical sciences. My goal for this season is to learn how to swim and get as ripped as Brandon Sindt. My advice to people of all ages: Try new things. Seriously. Most of us strive to be the best of the best, I m aiming for the best of the worst. 7 Son of Randy and Christine Sindt. Brandon returns for a fourth season of swimming; he also has four years of cross country and two years of track under his belt. He has earned 4 Major D s in cross country, 2 in track, and two in swimming. Brandon is a 3 year state qualifier in cross country and a 2 year qualifier in swimming. He is also a member of Renaissance. My goals for the season are to qualify for the 100 and 50 at state. I am undecided what I will do after high school but I am sure I will come up with something. Brandon Sindt Tom Tigges Son of Rob and Teresa Tigges. Tom is beginning his fourth year of swimming; he has also played four years of tennis. Tom is on NHS, honor roll every year, and has some common sense. He is also involved in Key Club and orchestra. My goals for the season are to have fun and obviously to swim fast. I plan to attend some college, somewhere, majoring in something, and hopefully doing something I like. After college, I plan to start a trans- Atlantic ballooning company and gloat over the oceans. After that, I will sell the company and float into the sunset. I would like to thank my mom and my dad for the support and my fellow seniors for an amazing 4 years. Have fun and swim fast. Son of Brian and Vicky Topping. Nick is a fourth year swimmer and a four year varsity letter winner; he has also run 3 years of cross country. Nick carries a 3.7 GPA at Wahlert, received the AP Scholar Award, and is involved in Interact Club, Step Club, and Lead Club. Nick is a happy senior this year and has been swimming for over half his life. He has too many siblings and can t wait for college. Nick wants to help knock Jordan Huff off the 400 Free Relay record this season. After college, he plans on creating the most efficient automatic cow milker and plans to combine his business with Jack Benda s spaceship business and become one of the co-dairy Kings of space. Nick hopes to go to college somewhere to study pre-med. And for all you underclassmen, just remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else. Nick Topping Mark Whalen Son of Mike and Karen Whalen. Mark returns for his second season of swimming; he has also participated in track and cross country at Senior. He carries a 3.0 GPA. Mark finished 19 th at state cross country this year and 21 st last year. He was also a city champ in cross country. Mark plans to attend Iowa Central to run cross country and track and then transfer to a D1 or D2 school and run cross country and track and major in sports management. 7

8 Juniors Josiah Benedict Son of Mark and Sandy Benedict. Josiah enters his third year of swimming; he has also done 3 years of track, two years of football, and 1 year of cross country at Senior. For academic achievements he mentions that calculus is hard. Josiah s goals for the season are to swim fast, not drown, and grow his beard long. Elijah Cook Son of Bennett Cook and Mary Ellen Carroll. Elijah is beginning his second year on the team; he has also played soccer while at Senior. His goals for the season are to improve his meet times and get in shape. Jacob Hansen Son of Greg and Lisa Hansen. Jacob is a three year member of the team; he has also participated in cross country for 3 years and track for 1. Jacob has been on Red Renaissance, and earned the Presidential Award and American Legion Award. His goals for the season are to swim on the varsity A relay team and to swim his best. Drake Oswald Son of Lonnie and Sherry Oswald. Drake returns for his third year of swimming; he also plays tennis for the Rams. He gets straight A s in class. Drake s goals for the season are to swim his fastest and get into shape. Collin Sindt Son of Randy and Christine Sindt. Collin is beginning his third year on the team; he has also done one year each of track, soccer, and cross country. Collin has carried a 4.0 for all three years and is on Red Renaissance. His goals for the season are to be an alternate for state and to go 5:15 in the 500 Free. Max Steinhauser Son of Robert and Cindy Steinhauser. Max is a new swimmer this year; he has also run two years each of cross country and track. Max s goal for the season is to drop time in every meet. Brandon Yuan Son of Kevin and Lee Yuan. Brandon returns for his third year of swimming; he also plays tennis at Senior. Brandon s goals for the season are to win and not lose. Check him out on 8

9 Grant Day Son of Mike & Cindy Day. Grant returns for his second year of swimming with the Senior Rams. He previously swam for five years with the Dubuque YMCA Dolphins. Grant just completed his second year of cross country for Senior. He enjoys playing cello for the Senior orchestra and also plays piano. Grant is a Boy Scout, does volunteer work and plays baseball, soccer and tennis in the summer. He is a spelling whiz, finishing seventh in the 2014 Regional Spelling Bee. Sophomores Blake Harris Son of Greg and Joyce Harris. Blake is entering his second year of swimming; he has also played two years of football and one of soccer. Blake has achieved A s in all classes. His goal is to get under a minute in the 100 Breaststroke. Garrett Knowles Son of Mike and Vickie Knowles. Garrett begins his second year on the team; he also plays football for the Rams. He has passed all of his classes. Garrett s goal for the season is to have a personal best time in all of his races at his taper meet. Joe Maddux Son of Patrick and Jennifer Maddux. Joe returns for his second year of swimming; he also participates in cross country and tennis at Senior. Joe s goals for the season are to improve and to swim varsity. Sophomores Noah Meus Son of Paul and Mary Meus. Noah is a two-year member of the swim team; he has also played two years of tennis. Noah lists making it to school as an academic achievement. Noah s goal for the season is to swim good. David Miner Son of Jim and Cristee Miner. This is David s first year on the team; he also played one year of basketball. David is involved in band and marching band at Senior. His goal for the season is to swim the best he can with proper technique. Jacob Olson Son of Greg Olson and Annemarie Day. Jake is a first year swimmer this year; he has also played 2 years of baseball. He is on Renaissance. Jake s goal for the season is to improve his times. 9

10 George Barton Son of Annette and David Barton. George is a new swimmer this season; he also participates in track and cross country. George earned a scholarship to Wahlert and tested out of 3 years of Spanish. His goal for the season is to survive. Freshmen Will Colin Son of Doug and Marie Colin. This is Will s first year swimming for Senior. He is an honors student. Will s goal for the season is to make state in individuals and relays. Matthew McGuire Son of Tim McGuire and Susan Schmitt. Matt is a new swimmer this year; he has also played soccer, tennis, track and field, and cross country. Matt earned a scholarship to Wahlert. His goals for the season are to become much stronger and increase his perseverance. Connor Miller Son of Dana and Sheila Miller. Connor is a first year member of the team; he is also active in cross country, track, and soccer. He is passing all of his classes. His goal for the season is to swim the 50 in less than 35 seconds. Thomas Palelo Son of Bob and Ann Palelo. Thomas is entering his first season of Rams swimming; he plans to run track in the spring. He is an honors student. Thomas goals for the season are to swim hard and not drown. Evan Schultheis Son of Christian and Megan Schultheis. Evan begins his first year of high school swimming; he has been involved in both swimming and tennis for many years already. Evan has gone to state for Lego League, is involved in Math Counts and FTC, and tested out of 3 years of Spanish and 2 of math. His goals for the season are to get a 24 in the 50 Free and a 57 in the 100 Free. Maximillion Schultz Son of Tim and Linda Schultz. Max is a first year swimmer this season; he also ran cross country. At Senior, Max is actively involved in band and marching band. His goals for the season are to swim with proper technique and speed. Connor Sindt Son of Randy and Christine Sindt. Connor is entering his first season of Senior swimming; he also ran cross country. He is in all honors classes. His goal for the season is to not drown. 10

His goals for the season are to break 55 in his 100 Free and 25 in his 50 Free. Scott Tigges Son of Rob and Teresa Tigges. This is Scott s first year swimming for the Rams. Scott lists going to school as an academic achievement. His goal for the season is to not drown. 11
