2 Preview The best thing a conference champion has going for itself is the experience of winning, and understanding what it takes to win again. We have a veteran squad with national-level experience, said head coach Dave Jennings. These swimmers know how to win. This year s installment of Miami University s women s swimming and diving team has plenty of experience, as the RedHawks have dominated the Mid-American Conference, claiming the last two MAC Championships, and not losing a conference dual meet over the last two seasons. There are 16 swimmers on the roster that have swam for Miami in each of its last two MAC Championship seasons, while an additional 11 were with the team for last year s title, providing the RedHawks with plenty of experience. For a program that has won 13 MAC Championships, including 12 under its current Hall of Fame coach, Dave Jennings, the key has been, not just depth, but a deep talent base. On paper this is, without a doubt, one of the best Miami teams I ve coached, said Jennings. Last year, the team was split between the MAC Championships and the Midwestern Conference Championships. At the MCC, the RedHawks swam to a third-place finish against other regional schools top swimmers, while Miami won the MAC Championship. From last year s squad, Miami s two MAC Champions and four of its five all-mac selections will return this season. With the addition of a talented class of incoming and transfers, the RedHawks will remain the team to beat in their quest for a MAC-record 14th conference championship. We brought in a very solid class, said Jennings. Some of our freshmen will have an immediate impact on our program, and replace some of the seniors from last year. Hopefully I can stay out of their way and let them succeed. Sprints In the sprint events, juniors Christel Frantz and Andrea Hocevar will look to guide a young contingent. Frantz finished with the sixth-fastest finals time in the 50 free, while swimming with successful relays in the 200 medley and 800 free with Hocevar. Hocever posted top-10 finishes in the 100 and 200 free, while finishing with the eighth-fastest finals time in the 50 free. Hocevar and Frantz really picked it up towards the end of last year, said Jennings. My hope is that they can pick up where they left off. The return of a healthy Maggi Bulla, who redshirted last season, and newcomer Ashley Seymour, should solidify the sprinting events from Jennings. Distance The distance stands as the strongest events for the RedHawks, as two of the top distance swimmers return. Senior Amy Miranda, junior Cara Magee and sophomore Katie Forster posted the top Katie Forster two times in multiple events. The distance is the cornerstone of our program, says Jennings. Miranda won her third-straight MAC Championship in the 1650 free and won her second 500 free in a row at the MAC Championships. While setting school records in both the 1000 and 1650 free during the season, Miranda qualified for the NCAA Championships in both her MAC-winning events. Her 1650 time also broke the MAC mark. After finishing in the top-five in three events at the MAC Championships, Magee was named second-team all-mac, posting top-10 league times in five events. Forster was met with similar success last season. As a, she topped the MAC in the 500 free, while breaking Miranda s school mark in the event at the Minnesota Invitational. Forster also topped the MAC in the 500 free and won a total of 12 events during the season. Also providing depth will be seniors Katie Scott and Liz Roble. Scott s top times are just behind those of Miranda and Forster in both the 1000 and 1650 free events. Roble will rejoin the team for a senior season after studying abroad in Luxemburg last year. We have a very veteran group of distance swimmers, Jennings added. They know how to race and they have been there for us. Newcomer Julie Madden, a junior transfer from UCLA, will also look to make a dent in her first season with the Red and White. Backstroke All-MAC first-team member, junior Trisha Lamb, returns to lead the backstroke corps for Miami. While finishing with the second-fastest 200 back in MAC history, Lamb captured league championships in both the 100 and 200 back events. Trisha is picking up where she left off last year, said Jennings. She has a great opportunity to defend her titles. The backstroke is another event that will benefit from a healthy Maggi Bulla, as she has posted times that rival Lamb s in both events. Junior Katie Miles and senior Emily Maier are additional options for Jennings in the backstroke. Their times were third and fourth on the team last year, respectively. 2

3 Freshmen Rachel Parker and Brittany Hocker will look to contribute as both swimmers posted promising times in high school. Breaststroke First-team all-mac selection Katie Unger, senior Casey Mangano and sophomore Laura Armbruster all return in the breast stroke events, giving Laura Armbruster Miami a formidable trio. Unger finished third in the 100 and fifth in the 200 breast at the MAC Championships as a, while posting the second- and third-best times in the MAC in those events, respectively. We have a lot of depth returning in the breaststroke events, said Jennings. We like our odds, with our combination of veterans and our. Mangano took sixth at the MAC Championships in the 100 breast, while winning 10 events on the season, including a pool-record performance in the 100 breast at Kenyon. Armbruster also took sixth at the conference meet, but in the 200 breast. She also swept the breast events against MAC-foe Marshall. Freshmen Sarah Baumert, Ashley Seymour and Ashley Petak will be the newcomers called on to contribute in this event. Baumert and Seymour combined to be named high school all-americans 30 times. Baumert can make a big impact in the breaststroke, added Jennings. Along with Armbruster, we will have a solid tandem at the MAC Championships. Butterfly The butterfly is the RedHawks deepest event with 12 swimmers posting sub-minute times. Leading the way is junior Michelle Reynolds, who won a MAC Championship in the 100 fly as a, and took third in the 200 fly, as well. Junior Courtney Dice and sophomore Ellen Koch also return this year. Dice had a productive sophomore year, while Koch is rebounding from injury that hampered her last year, and will provide experienced depth. We have a lot more depth than last year (in the butterfly events), said Jennings. Newcomers will play a large factor as we have a slew of freshmen with scoring potential. Sarah Baumert, in particular, will look to make waves in the 100 fly, as her personal-best time is one-half second off Reynolds team-leading mark. Individual Medley Katie Unger, Casey Mangano and Laura Armbruster. Lamb posted Miami s top IM times last year, and has eclipsed the RedHawks 400 record before, while topping out just Preview seconds off the 200 mark. Armbruster and Katie Unger are two of our top IMers, said Jennings, while we ll also have Trisha Lamb in the 400 and Ashley Seymour, who could be at her best here. Ashley Seymour s personal-best times in the IM are encouraging as to her ability to step up and earn points for the RedHawks come MAC Championship time. Diving Sophomore Christin Eberst and senior Heidi Willemssen are the lone returning divers for Jennings. Diving is another one of our strong points, said Jennings. We have two of the top divers in the MAC. Eberst, who was an NCAA Championship qualifier as a, won 17-of-22 diving events entering the MAC Championships where she took third in the one-meter and fourth in the three-meter events. Eberst has rapidly become one of the better divers in the MAC. She qualified for the Christin Eberst NCAA Championships in the three-meter as a. Willemssen took fourth in the one-meter and sixth while jumping from three meters at the MAC Championships. Heidi has been one of the top divers in the MAC for a while, and has built on that over the last three years. The that will look to contribute on the springboard will be Katie Meister and Emilie Armer. Meister was one of five divers in the nation to be name an all-american, as well as academic all-america. The addition of these two (Meister and Armer) will fortify our diving team. Outlook While the RedHawks will have the daunting task of seeking their third consecutive MAC title, they will also try to expand their impact to a regional, and even national, stage. Last year was a great year for our swimming and diving program, said Jennings, not just as a team, but individually as well. With a pair of NCAA qualifiers, we will be able to keep moving forward and hopefully have an impact on the national level. But Jennings knows that to achieve national acheivements, you have to get the job done at home first. We are looking forward to hosting the MAC Championships this year, said Jennings. We would like to keep the (MAC Championship) trophy in Oxford. It s going to be a lot of fun. 3

29 Miami University is well known for being one of the Public Ivy schools and is noted for its Cradle of Coaches. Many student-athletes have come and gone from the University, taking a piece of Miami with them and leaving a legacy behind. The Miami women s swimming and diving programs, under the direction of Dave Jennings and Todd Spohn, have achieved greatness both in the classroom and the water. The following are some thoughts from Miami women s swimming and diving coach Dave Jennings and alumnae on how their experiences at Miami University have impacted their postgraduate years. As a coach, I have always valued achievement in the pool and in the classroom, and it is rewarding to see our swimmers succeed in both. The members of our team first come to Miami as a student, and second as an athlete. Our goal is to help each athlete achieve in both areas. Dave Jennings Women s Swimming Coach 1983-Present As a speech pathologist undergraduate and graduate student at Miami, as well as a varsity swimmer, I was encouraged to develop my potential in the classroom and in the pool. Both the faculty and Dave Jennings strove for excellence by fostering an environment and attitude that hard work, determination and enthusiasm lead to success. I am grateful and proud that Miami s goal is one of excellence, and that support to achieve it was given to me both inside and outside the classroom, preparing me for my life after Miami. Maura Cuddeback, 93 Speech/Language Pathologist Captain 93 I am often asked the question, Why did you attend Miami University all the way from Atlanta, Ga.?. The answer to that question is simple. The philosophy of the swimming program at Miami is to create an environment with an equal emphasis on academic performance and athletic prowess. My academic and athletic experiences taught me time management, hard work, the ability to succeed under pressure and the value of friendship. Emily Kabe, 95 Regional Manager, Interquest (Darwin Networks) Swimmer/Assistant Coach I learned and refined how to set goals and then focus my energies on the task at hand to a successful conclusion, be it in winning swim meets or maximizing study time to reap success. This has allowed me to apply these same disciplines in the real world so that I can accomplish my goals both personally and professionally. Christie Danford, 96 Staff Accountant, Turner Broadcasting Inc. Captain 96, MAC runner-up My athletic and academic experiences from Miami helped prepare me for my post-college endeavors. I learned the value of teamwork, dedication and persistence, which have led to many successes. Courtney Stern, 97 Account Manager, UPSHOT MAC Champion Relay academic accolades Academic Excellence Miami s women s swimming and diving athletes have often been noted for their prowess in the classroom as well as in the pool, and last year was no different. The following list of members from the women s swimming and diving teams were acknowledged by the MAC for their academic excellence: Verizon Academic All-District IV: Becca Vianello (Exercise Science) MAC Academic Honor Roll Kristen Connelly (Zoology) Christen Fout (Zoology) Andrea Hocevar (Undeclared) Emily Maier (Accountancy) Casey Mangano (Accountancy) Amy Miranda (Marketing) Colleen Rambasek (Early Childhood Ed.) 31 Over the span of 57 years, the Mid- American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive NCAA Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has moved its men s and women s basketball championship into a first-class NBA/WNBA facility at Gund Arena. In the coming years, the MAC will co-host the 2006 NCAA Women s Basketball Mideast Regional and the 2007 Women s Final Four at Gund Arena, Rick Chryst MAC Commissioner after successfully hosting the 2000 NCAA Men s Basketball Regional at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. It also continues to be one of three conferences (SEC and Big 12) to sponsor a football championship game. Continuing to lead by example, the MAC provides its student-athletes and member institutions with the best possible opportunities. Since 1946, the MAC has not only stood the test of time, but has thrived and formed a league that its founders could not have imagined or dreamed. Based in Cleveland since July 1999, following a 15-year stay in Toledo, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. The athletic season marked the second straight season that the MAC had two teams involved in bowl games with league champion Marshall (GMAC) winning post season competition for the fifth consecutive season while West Division champion Toledo participated in the Motor City Bowl for the second time in as many years. During the off-season, the MAC had its best year in the NFL Draft as a record nine players were drafted in the seven-round draft. 32 support staff Miami s athletic department strongly emphasizes that its studentathletes succeed not only in their athletic pursuits but in their academic endeavors as well. Realizing the unique demands placed on the student-athlete, the department feels an obligation to provide the best possible academic aid and support. David Graham That s where Miami s Comprehensive Academic Support Program comes into play. Begun during the academic year, the program monitors the completion of the student s course of study and subsequent graduation. The academic coordinators offices are located in the new Walter L. Gross Student-Athlete Development Center and provide Miami s student-athletes Cindy Veraldo with the tools to succeed in the classroom. Miami s academic coordinator staff is comprised of three full-time counselors and one graduate assistant. David Graham, Cynthia Veraldo and Christyn Chambers serve as the academic coordinators. The three coordinators have the responsibility of implementing and coordinating all aspects of the academic support program for both the men s and women s teams and also running the CHAMPS/Life Skills program an NCAA program initiated to develop and enhance the lives of student-athletes through educational programs and resources focusing on gender equity, student-athlete welfare and life skills. Miami student-athletes are in an environment in which The athletic media relations office, under the direction of Mike Harris, provides a variety of publicity services for Miami athletic programs. All pertinent information is provided to local, regional and hometown newspapers. Additional publicity is provided through distribution of schedules, brochures and public address announcements. The athletic media relations office also updates and maintains team and individual statistics and records, and makes weekly reports to the conference office and to various coordinators for regional and national rankings. Interviews with Miami swimmers and coaches throughout the week can be coordinated through the athletic media relations office and Media Relations Intern Kevin Conway. Players and coaches are available for post-meet interviews following a brief cooling off period. Information on Miami athletics is available at Information on Miami and all Mid- American Conference schools is also available through the MAC website at Academic Support Media Relations both a rich athletic tradition and an outstanding academic reputation are important, says Graham. Our student-athletes can feel confident that with the lessons learned in the classroom and on the playing fields, they will be wellprepared for whatever their futures may hold. The academic coordinator s office is available throughout the student-athletes careers at Miami. They supervise academic needs assessments for incoming grant-in-aid freshmen and follow that up by coordinating student academic evaluations and facilitating individual team study tables. The office s responsibilities include assisting studentathletes with registration concerns and career counseling, as well as tracking their academic progress in cooperation with the University Registrar. The academic coordinator s office tracks over 550 student-athletes records. The academic coordinators also serve as a referral source to the Office of Learning Assistance for any athletes who may need tutoring or have other special needs. The students with whom the coordinator s office works with may also be referred to appropriate university agencies such as the Student Counseling Center, Career Assistant Center and Office of Financial Aid. By working with the Career Planning and Placement Office, the academic support personnel can assist undergraduates and alumni of the program with the job-search process. Much of the success of the academic support program lies in the willingness of the student-athletes to utilize support services such as tutoring and help sessions. The Miami coaching staff takes an active role in encouraging good study habits and successful academic strategies with their athletes on a daily basis. The coaching staff is an integral part of the support staff, as they meet individually with the staff to provide academic updates. 33 One of the top priorities for the Miami sports medicine staff is to ensure that all student-athletes attain the highest potential for safe and effective participation in their chosen sports. This includes prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, utilizing the latest techniques and equipment. The main goal of the training staff is to prevent an injury from occurring. This involves getting to know the athletes and Jolene Atkins determining what factors could predispose them to injury, then acting to improve the situation. This process could include anything from routine taping to strengthening exercises for a chronic problem. Despite all precautions, injuries occur, and when they do, the qualifications of the Miami athletic training staff truly become apparent. Regardless of the severity of the injury, the athletic S trength and conditioning in terms of player development is an integral part of any successful athletic program. Miami University recognizes this fact with its strength and conditioning program, led by 1988 Miami graduate Dan Dalrymple, C.S.C.S.D. Dalrymple, who is in his 13th year on the RedHawk staff, is a former captain and all-mac offensive tackle at Miami and will be inducted into Miami s James Carsey Athletic Hall of Fame this year. He is assisted by James Carsey who works with the women s swimming and diving team and a full-time intern and eight to ten students. Athletes are recruited by Miami to be champions, says Dalrymple, who was named the MAC Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 1995, 1997 and You don t just come here to be second-best. So it s our obligation to provide student-athletes with the tools to reach their full potential. The foundation of the program is free weight training. Research data from around the world supports the idea that multi-joint free weight training is the superior method for the training of athletes, for both performance enhancement and injury prevention, Dalrymple says. The free weight regimen includes both explosive Olympic lifting (cleans, snatches, presses and jerks) and power lifting (bench, squat and deadlift). The program is rounded out with free weight and machine supplemental exercises, as well as medicine ball and plyometric training. Sports Medicine Strength & Conditioning Miami RedHawk Women s Swimming & Diving support staff trainers are prepared to give immediate quality evaluations and treatments for the condition. When the athletes return to competition, they do so after completion of a personally designed rehabilitation program with the goal of getting the athlete back to pre-injury status as quickly as possible. Benefiting from one of the finest training rooms in Division I athletics, Miami s athletes are cared for with muscle stimulators, ultrasound, whirlpools and rehabilitation equipment such as the Orthotron II and KinCom. The resources do not end with the equipment, however; the staff of six certified athletic trainers and 20 student trainers have established one of the best sports medicine programs in the country. The educational curriculum has been endorsed by the National Athletic Trainers Association for 10-plus years. Miami s sports medicine department is directed by head trainer Gale Newton, who is aided by assistant trainers Jennifer Beardslee, Dave Donnelly, Jolene Atkins, Kevin Morley, Sam Pittera and David Agbunag. The three main goals of our conditioning program are to enhance performance, prevent injury and eliminate weaknesses, Dalrymple says. Strength enhancement is not the only objective of the total program. Speed is the No. 1 objective in our program, he adds. Team speed is dependent upon two factors: recruiting and our team speed development program. An innovative approach to speed development at Miami is Speed School, which involves frequent testing in the 40-yard dash, video analysis and specific drills to improve speed, strength, running mechanics and flexibility. Other areas emphasized by the strength and conditioning staff include flexibility (static and dynamic), power (speed and strength), aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, agility and body control, nutrition and body composition and motivation. State-of-the-art equipment and techniques employed by Dalrymple and his staff include speed chutes, position-specific training, video analysis, slide boards, computerized strength training program and testing design, and individualized plyometric programs. All in all, the strength and conditioning program at Miami has greatly increased performance on the field. Furthermore, the program has reduced both the occurrence and severity of injuries. Our conditioning program is one of the most demanding around, Dalrymple says. Our student-athletes know that when they step on the field they are in better shape than their opponent. This helps prevent injury and breed success. Pete Wyckoff Success in Miami athletics begins long before the athletes arrive on the deck. It starts with the best clothing, shoes and stateof-the-art equipment to help the players compete at their highest level, avoid injury and represent Miami University in a first-class manner. Miami s equipment room in Withrow Court is operated by Pete Wyckoff, while fellow equipment manager Mary O Leary Equipment coordinates the equipment in Millett Hall and Andy Geshan opperates the Goggin Ice Arena equipment room. A daily check of all protective devices is performed for all players. Maintenance of all equiptment is important, and Wyckoff, who is in his 12th season at Miami, is responsible for assuring the equipment is ready to go at all times. Aided by well-trained student assistants, the staff handles the equipment needs for all 19 men s and women s sports. We believe our entire athletic staff is committed to helping teams be successful off the field as well as on it, says O Leary. 33

34 strength and conditioning Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student-Athlete Development Center The hub of Miami s athletic facilities, the $5 million Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student-Athlete Development Center was dedicated prior to Miami s September 22, 2001 home football game versus Cincinnati. This facility, which is located between Millett Hall and Yager Stadium, caters to both the academic and physical needs of Miami s student-athletes. One half of the facility is dedicated for an 10,000-square foot physical fitness center, which includes free and machine weights, a circuit training machine, cardiovascular equipment, and speed, agility and jump training facilities. The other portion of the center is devoted to academic enrichment. The new center features two large study areas, an informal study lounge, private tutoring offices and a computer lab. Miami s athletics program has always prided itself with a strong commitment to both athletics and academics, says Steve Cady, associate athletic director and chair of the project design team. This facility epitomizes our philosophy. It is an unbelievable addition to our facilities. Separating the academic and physical fitness centers is a main lobby and reception area, which features a rotunda that dominates the reception lobby ceiling. Miami s rich athletic tradition, headlined by the Cradle of Coaches, will be highlighted on the rotunda. It s a tremendous facility for our strength and conditioning efforts, says strength coach Dan Dalrymple. We re able to do a lot of things we haven t been able to do in the past. The facility opened its doors to student-athletes during the summer of 2001 and had a Grand Opening Gala on Friday, Sept. 21 in conjunction with Miami s football home opener with Cincinnati. This is a showcase facility for Miami University athletics, says former academic coordinator and current assistant Red and White Club director Darcy Shriver. It is a convenient location for our student-athletes to enrich their academic and athletic experience. The Student Development Center represents another Miami commitment to first-rate athletic facilities. 34
