12 C H A I R M A N S R E P O R T Our key goal in Auckland Swimming is to ensure that we add value to Member Clubs. I would like to thank my dedicated fellow Board Members, Executive Group Members and myriad of volunteers, officials and administrators who happily give their time and energy for the benefit of our swimmers to do just that. On behalf of the ASA Board I would like to thank all volunteers who assist the sport of swimming, but offer special congratulations to Mark Bone and Mark Saunders for receiving Swimming New Zealand Service Awards. Our Executive Officer, Brian Palmer, left the role in January this year. Brian helped move Swimming Auckland into a new business model using his strategic and business acumen to service our Clubs and swimmers. Thank you to the sponsors he has sourced and serviced, who we appreciate have given their scarce resources to assist our sport. We are grateful to Brian and all the Palmer family members for their passion, willingness and expertise in supporting our Clubs. Sarah Thomas was appointed to the Executive Officer role in January in a caretaker position. We welcome Sarah to the role and are already appreciating her organisational and communication skills. Thanks also to the wonderful staff at the ASA office, Hayley Palmer and Ben Gillies, for your enthusiasm and dedication to Swimming Auckland. The Swim T3 Junior League continues to provide the ideal link from learning to swim in swim schools in to swimming in the competitive arena. The events are short, but very loud, showing just how much excitement our young swimmers have in the league. I would especially like to thank Rosanna, Tirol and Kiri Palmer for their continued commitment in running these events. The last two years have been a time of immense change in governance structure for our sport. Swimming New Zealand adopted a new Constitution in July 2012, together with a new Board and CEO. This has led to changes within the sport which are filtering to regional and club level. The number of regions has reduced from seventeen to fifteen, with clubs numbering 179, 14 within the Swimming Auckland area. The Regional Constitution has been finalised and distributed, and it is hoped that our Member Clubs will adopt this at a Special General Meeting later this year. The Constitution is standard for all regions in New Zealand, and Swimming Auckland will need to develop regulations to sit alongside the Consitution to cover issues specific to Auckland. It will in turn mean that Member Clubs will need to revise their own Consitution, and we will assist in this process along with Swimming New Zealand. The Whole of Sport Plan for swimming in New Zealand is developing, and as a Regional Association we will develop KPIs to be shared with Swimming New Zealand. The first national Zonal meet was held in Wellington at the end of NZSCCs last year. It s fair to say that combining the swimming strength of Counties Manukau, Northland and Auckland we have some way to go to show our strength as a Zonal team. Within Auckland Council the free pools policy introduced in April 2013 has allowed many clubs using public pools free access to pool space for training. Auckland Council has an expectation that this value will be passed on to the swimming community, especially in comparison to clubs training at non-council pools that do not receive this benefit. Clubs will need to demonstrate this to ensure that we can continue to receive free access. 12

13 Congratulations must go to top Auckland swimmer, Lauren Boyle, who retained the National Swimmer of the Year and State Insurance NZ Swimmer of the Year Awards, with a highlight of three medals at the FINA World Long Course Championships in Barcelona last year, the first medal for a New Zealander since Danyon Loader. Congratulations also to Glenn Snyders who reached a final at the same meet. Gabrielle Fa amausili has stamped her mark on the swimming world with a title and NZ Open record at the World Junior Championships assisting her to achieve the NZ Swimming Trust Emerging Swimmer of the Year Award, well done Gabrielle. Congratulations to all our Swimming Auckland swimmers who made New Zealand representative teams: Lauren Boyle, Glenn Snyders, Shaun Burnett, Mitchell Donaldson and Phillip Ryan in the FINA World Championships; Michael Mincham and Gabrielle Fa amausili in the World Junior Championships; and Hayley Palmer and Laura Quilter in the World University Games, and Caroline Baddock, Georgia Marris, Max Polianski and Monique King in the Australian Youth Olympics team. Congratulations also to the many swimmers included in this report for the continual development and depth of swimming in Auckland. Best wishes to our Aucklanders swimming at the Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Championships, Youth Olympics and Junior Pan Pacific Championships later in the year; Lauren Boyle, Mitchel Donaldson, Dylan Dunlop-Barrett, Steven Kent, Glenn Snyders, Laura Quilter, Rebekah Bradley, Gabrielle Fa amausili, Jacob Garrod and Michael Mincham. A total of 126 Auckland records further highlights the excellence of both our open and age group swimmers. Auckland won the Yaldhurst Shield, the War Memorial Shield and the Freyburg Shield. North Shore Swimming won the Cain Trophy, the Duncan Laing Trophy and was the Top Performing Club at the New Zealand Short Course Championships, the New Zealand Age Group Championships and the New Zealand Opens. I would once again like to thank the Auckland Board; Willem Coetzee (Deputy Chair), Gwen Ryan, Claudia Hill and Robin Baddock; Independent Board Members Nick Berry and Malcom Haggerty; President, David Jack and Registrar Tonia Wheeler for their dedication to the governance of Auckland Swimming. Thank you also to the members of our four Executive Groups; Competitive Swimming, Technical, Events Management and Technology. 14 E X E C U T I V E O F F I C E R S R E P O R T So much has happened since the last AGM, so many changes and challenges. Auckland Swimming said Goodbye to Brian Palmer who led us for five years through some troubled waters and brought us out swimmingly! We also received Swimming New Zealand s Constitution for all Regions to adopt by the end of this year. I stepped into this caretaker role in January the week of Aucklands biggest competition of the year, the Walker & Hall Anthony Mosse Classic held over the Auckland Anniversary weekend. I have been raised with the philosophy that if it doesn t kill you it will make you stronger! Wow, four days at Westwave for this competition didn t kill me but it did springboard me into swimming in Auckland! The event ran in its fourth year attracting 636 athletes including teams from as far a field as Fiji and Samoa. Our volunteers did a staggering 52 hours (needing 32 volunteers per session totalling 1,664 hours) to assist in the running of this event. This competition was a great platform for our junior swimmers to qualify or monitor their progress before travelling down to Wellington for the Swimming New Zealand Junior Championships for the first time being held at one location. Auckland also added a new programme to the calendar, Northern Zone Junior Competition, to enable young swimmers unable to travel to Wellington a higher level of competition. By March at the Auckland Open Championships I was no longer the new face on the poolside! The number of swimmers competing in these Championships increased this year by 32 resulting in 148 extra entries. Many athletes swam their personal bests and it was a good test for them with the Commonwealth trials being held only four weeks later. At the Swimming New Zealand Commonwealth trials hosted by Auckland Swimming at Westwave I was privileged to be assisted in the AOD and admin room by many parents from our region. They gave their time willingly regardless of whether they had a child participating, truly dedicated volunteers Thank You! Resulting from these trials, Auckland Swimming is now proud to have Lauren Boyle, Laura Quilter, Steve Kent, Dylan Dunlop-Barratt, Mitchell Donaldson qualifying to wear the Silver Fern in July in Glasgow. Additional to these swimmers we also congratulate Caroline Baddock, Shaun Burnett, Hayley Edmond, Jacob Garrod, Abbie Johnson, Matthew Myers (all North Shore), Gabrielle 14

15 Fa amausili (Roskill), Jane Ip, Nielsen Varoy (both West Auckland) and Alex Peach (United) for qualifying to compete in the Oceania Swimming Championships. Congratulations to all Auckland Swimmers that qualified to compete at Swimming New Zealand Div II Championships, some of whom were lucky enough to then compete at Swimming New Zealand s Age Group Championships, I hope you continue to enjoy your journey in our sport. The Junior League is now running in its fifth year but the first time I have been exposed to it. It is fast fun and fantastic! This is a great opportunity for many swim schools to offer their pupils an opportunity to dip their toe into competitive swimming. I would like to thank Swim T3 for supporting the Junior League and offering support to the development into the competitive element of swimming. I would also like to recognise Pita Pit and Walker & Hall for their sponsorship. We can now easily identify our officials on poolside in their stylish pink t-shirts! Auckland Swimming, as a registered charity rely heavily on funding and have been successful in securing grant funds from The Trusts Community Foundation assisting us with the cost of pool hire. I would like to thank our parents and their extended family for their tireless support as without you I would not be needed! I want swimming to be an experience your children enjoy and have fond memories of being involved in hoping they then may continue to volunteer when no longer competing! Finally can I thank the ASA Board for their continuous behind the scenes work ensuring we assist our clubs and swimmers achieve The Best They Possibly Can Be.
