1 Bemidji State University Department of Physical Education, Health & Sport PHED 1116 Advanced Swimming (1 credit) Instructor Information Instructor: Spring Semester 2012 Christina Kippenhan, Ph.D., Professor of PEHS Office: 223 PE Complex Office Hours: see posting on web site or office door Telephone: URL: Class Meetings: Course Description: TH 10:00 11:00, BSU Swimming Pool An activity course for swimmers who can in satisfactory form swim 25 yards each of the five basic strokes. Emphasis will be on developing and refining thirteen strokes, diving and other advanced aquatic skills. This course is preparatory for the Water Safety Instructor course. Prerequisites: Intermediate swimming ability (Swim in satisfactory form 25 yards of back crawl, breaststroke, front crawl, sidestroke, elementary backstroke) Text: none Technology Requirements and Expectations: none Teaching Methodology: Skill practice, video session, lecture Learning Objectives / Course Objectives Student will develop an understanding of: hydrodynamic principles and personal water safety. Student will demonstrate proficiency in the following related aquatic skills: treading water, floating, surface dives, underwater swimming, front dive off 1-meter board, back dive of 1-meter board. Student will understand the following swimming strokes and demonstrate proficiency in them: competitive strokes: breaststroke, front crawl, back crawl, butterfly non-competitive strokes: sidestroke right side, sidestroke left side, overarm sidestroke right side, overarm sidestroke left side, single trudgen, double trudgen, trudgen crawl, elementary backstroke, inverted breaststroke Students will have the opportunity to use their newly acquired knowledge by evaluating and correcting the swimming technique of an assigned partner.

2 Disclosure The requirements in this course present some strenuous activity. If you have a medical condition or disability that might prevent you from taking part in the practice sessions, you should consult your physician and/or professor. It is the student's responsibility to care for this matter. Course Requirements and Values Stroke Technique 25 yards of each stroke taught will be evaluated (butterfly, back crawl, breaststroke, front crawl, elementary backstroke, inverted breaststroke, sidestroke right and left, overarm sidestroke right and left, single trudgen, double trudgen, trudgen crawl). For each stroke a maximum of 5 points can be achieved (4 points for proper form, 1 point for swimming the whole distance with proper form). The average peer evaluation score contributes 25% to the final stroke technique score, the instructor score contributes 75% to the final stroke technique score. Timed Test Three 25 yard time tests (First day - Midterm - Final) 10 min distance test (Final) each 50 yard swam during the 10 min are worth 5 points up to a maximum of 50 possible points, 10 points for swimming 10 min without stopping (60 points max) Written Test Final written exam Thursday, April 24, 2012 Multiple choice test covering the theoretical information covered in class related the swimming, stroke technique, hydrodynamic principles, aquatic safety Participation Points Daily participation: up to 10 points per class session 10 points = actively participates and shows good effort 5 points = attends but does not actively participate 0 points = no participation, absent Evaluation Criteria Stroke Technique Evaluation 50% Timed Tests 20% Written Test 15% Class participation 15% TOTAL: 100% *Note: The above items may be ESTIMATES of values possible due to course time constraints. Scale 90% - 100% A 60% - 69% D 80% - 89% B < 60% F 70% - 79% C Instructor reserves the right to adjust the grading scale but only to the students advantage

3 Course Schedule The course schedule/timeline is included in the syllabus. Deadline for dropping the course: Please check the Bemidji State University home web page; click on ACADEMICS, click on ACADEMIC CALENDAR to find the last date to DROP without a grade and the last date to DROP with a W grade for this semester. Attendance and Class Participation Requirements Participation and attendance are necessary for credit; if illness, injury or an emergency prevents attendance, call the office phone and leave a message on the voice mail or send an to the above address BEFORE you miss the class. Participation and attendance comprise 15% of the final grade. Upto 10 points per class session are awarded for daily participation: 10 points = actively participates and shows good effort 5 points = attends but does not actively participate 0 points = no participation, absent Course Policies Attire: wear socially acceptable swimming attire to all class sessions except written test; all swimming attire needs to satisfy FINA rules with regard to decency and material (FINA.org); goggles are recommended; students with long hair should use hair bands or swimming caps; do not wear jewelry as it is easily lost in the water. Safety rules: no chewing gum; no horse play; no running on pool deck; do not enter water or use diving boards without instructor s permission. Equipment: return any equipment used before you depart. Final: Students are expected to take final on the assigned days. A missed final may not be made up at a later date unless the student has made arrangements with the instructor prior to the exam day. This is the student s responsibility. The time of the final is not negotiable. Any form of academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, misrepresentation) may result in disciplinary action. Possible disciplinary actions may include failure for part or all of a course, as well as suspension from the University. Student Rights and Responsibilities Students are expected to read the course syllabus and review course information. Students are expected to attend class sessions and participate in class activities. Students are expected to contribute to peer teaching situation & demonstrate knowledge of the course material. Students are expected to work on their swimming strokes outside of class. Late arrivals and early departures disrupt the class. Please clear these with me ahead of time if at all possible. K 3) Written test covers knowledge and understanding of aquatic skills including stroke technique, hydrodynamic principles, and aquatic safety Students perform different emergency procedures related to water-rescues for non-lifeguards, e.g. reaching and throwing rescues, and in-water in-line stabilization techniques for suspected spinal victims to the instructor s satisfaction. 3) Written test contributes to a passing grade for the course. The student passes the written test for the course with a minimum score of 70%
