1 AWSI Pre-Course Assignment Directions Answer the questions below as completely as you can. Completing this assignment before the course begins will help you with all the knowledge necessary. Supplies: Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) Manual AWSI CD This assignment Getting started: Start by skimming your manual. Get to know the sections and major headings. Pay particular attention to the first section ( Red Cross Swim ). This section provides information about the Red Cross and its learn to swim program as well as information about how to become a Water Safety Instructor. Also pay attention to the following appendices: Appendix A Evaluation Criteria: AWSI Course and Teaching Experience Appendix C Code of Conduct Appendix D AWSI Red Cross Program Screening Performance Criteria (you will be expected to perform these skills on the first day of class) Appendix F AWSI Teaching Experience Assignments 1-8 (you will be required to teach these items throughout your teaching experience hours) Appendix K Common Equipment and Uses Appendix L Choking/Rescue Breathing After you have skimmed your manual, start answering the questions in the assignment. The questions are in the same order as the sections in your book. The class: In order to take this course, you must be 15 years of age by the last day of the program. The AWSI course is 30 hours long. Additionally, you re required to complete 8 hours of teaching experience essentially, assisting with Red Cross Swim classes. Depending on the course, these additional 8 hours may or may not be included in class time. You will be informed as to specific course requirements the first day of the course.

Red Cross Swim Program Level refers to the different swimming levels listed under the Program Overview section, starting on page 2.2 of your manual.
