1 As a competitive swimming club, our aim is for all our swimmers to participate in and enjoy the sport of swimming. Whatever your ability, we will provide the opportunities throughout the year for you to train and compete, both as an individual and as part of a successful swimming team Report from Graham Pople, Head Coach NOTE: THERE IS NO TRAINING ON GOOD FRIDAY EVENING Gold Gold Silver Silver 7 8 Bronze Bronze Medals Medals Min. Min. of of 6 6 Club Club Records Records 2 2 Championship Championship Records Records Barrie Barrie Stewart Stewart is is the the fastest fastest 50m 50m Breastroke Breastroke swimmer swimmer in in the the South South and and Oliver Oliver Jermy Jermy is is County County Champion Champion & & National National Qualified Qualified Swimmer! Swimmer! Oliver Jermy County Champion Age 12 I am delighted to announce that H&WSC has had tremendous success at the recent Hampshire County ASA competition. The Counties were held in a series of events taking place over three weekends during February at three different locations firstly, at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, at home here in Waterlooville, with the final weekend taking place in Southampton. The ASA County Championships are the main focus for every swimming club it is the highlight of the year for most swimmers as, after all, this is what they are training for. Every swimmers goal is to be able to achieve a County Qualifying Time. To be able to achieve this is enormously satisfying for both swimmer and coach, and is a direct result of all that hard training throughout the year. Never satisfied with just one or two QT s - all potential County swimmers work extremely hard towards qualifying for a full BAGCAT and this year, H&WSC have had the highest number of Qualifying Swimmers for individual Age Group events and also for full BAGCAT swimmers than ever before. This proves that H&WSC overall competitive standard is improving and whilst we will never have the size and resources of bigger clubs such as Portsmouth Northsea and Southampton, we are certainly a force to be reckoned with. It is a well known fact, and 2010 was no exception, that Hampshire County Qualifying Times are renowned to be some of the toughest in the country. There are some very fast swimmers throughout Hampshire and this is the reason the bar keeps getting raised. However, H&WSC rose to the challenge and we held our own producing some very impressive performances and results throughout the entire meet.

2 This year we had the highest number ever of 11 year old Boys qualifying with County times, between 5 boys, they qualified for 8 individual events. Well done to Henry Parry, Rory Huggins, Edward Richardson, Owen Davies, Daniel Prosser. We had our youngest girl swimmer, Katie Byrne aged 10, qualify for both 200m Back and 50m Free. Our young swimmers produced their personal bests on the day, and were never daunted by the massive 50m pool at Mountbatten during the first weekend Outstanding Seniors There were some outstanding swims from the other end of the age groups the Seniors. Our Master swimmers are to be congratulated on their brilliant achievements. SENIORS 2 Gold 3 Silver Barrie Stewart won Gold Medal for 50m Breast in his age group and stormed ahead and took Gold in the Open Final, which means he is the fastest 50m Breast swimmer in Hampshire county. Barrie continued his success and went on to take 2 Silver Medals in the 100m Breast in both Age Group and the Open Final. Stephen Tomlinson, not to be outdone, took Silver Medal for the 200m Back JUNIORS 4 Gold 9 Silver 8 Bronze Impressive Juniors Our Junior Swimmers were very impressive this year. Some narrowly missed out on the medals, but there were some great results Joe Duffy (Age 16) took Gold 100m Free and Gold 50m Fly. Silver in 100m IM, Silver in 400m Free, Silver in 200m Free and Silver in 50m Free, followed by Bronze in 100m Fly and Bronze 200m IM respectively Matt Jenner (Age 16) Bronze 100m Back Sophie Ormston (Age 16) Silver 800m Freestyle and Silver 200m Fly. Katherine Casey (aged 17/18) Gold 400m Freestyle and also a Silver in 200m Back & Bronze in 100m Back. Savannah Beauchamp (age 15) Silver for 100m Breast, Silver for 50m Breast, Bronze in 200m Breast and Bronze in 100m Breast Open Final Flossie Stirzaker (age 15) Bronze 50m Back Ashleigh Guttridge (age 15) Gold 50m Fly, and also Bronze 50m Free. Ashleigh Guttridge in top form Joe Duffy in action Oliver Jermy BAGCAT winner 2010 County Champion I am very proud to also announce that Oliver Jermy is 2010 Age 12 Hampshire County Champion BAGCAT Winner. 6 Gold 2 Silver Ollie had an outstanding Championship, swimming 9 events and achieving 6 Gold Medals and 2 Silver. 2 County Championship Records Smashed and 6 New Club Records Again! Ollie has smashed 2 County Championship Records. The new record for 200m Back which has been held since 2003 now belongs to Ollie and stands at The new Championship Record for 100m Back recorded by Ollie at was previously owned by Steven Cumper, a former H&WSC member who went on and swam at the Junior Olympics in 1996/7. 6 Gold Medals for Ollie in 200m Back, 100m Free, 100m IM, 200m Free, 50m Free, 100m Back together with 6 new Club Records 2 Silver Medals in 400m Free and 50m Back. What an achievement! Ollie swam so fast in his 100m Backstroke leg of the IM relay, that he would have recorded a National Qualifying Time for a 13 year old which puts him at No. 1 Boys Age 12 in the Country. Ollie will hopefully be competing in the Nationals in the last week in July in Sheffield. Well done Ollie, we are all very proud of you! 3 We faced fierce competition in the Freestyle and Medley Relay events however everyone pulled together and swam their hearts out. We made two finals - the Girls Junior Team were placed 6 th in the 200m Medley Relay Final and the Boys Junior Team were placed 7 th in the 400m Medley Relay Final. Fantastic! Each single one of our County Swimmers put 100% effort into their events, and speaking as Head Coach I am extremely proud of them all. They should all be so proud of themselves they are a credit to the club. It takes total determination, courage and dedication from a swimmer to consistently attend training, to get up out of a nice warm bed and swim those early mornings, to turn down party invites and social events to train late in the evenings & at the weekends. It may be no fun pushing out a 6000m training set when their friends are at the cinema but it does all seem worthwhile when they have that medal in their hand and know that they have earned it 100%. Well done all swimmers keep up the good work and keep training hard and reap the rewards! 11 A Final Events were swam between our Junior and Senior swimmers which puts them amongst the top 8 fastest swimmers in Hampshire County, which in turn puts H&WSC amongst the top swimming clubs. If you would like to see a list of our swimmers and their qualifying events and final places, this will be available for a short time on the noticeboard for you to see. You can always access the results directly from the ASA website. Do you know who classifies as Junior? Girls can enter into Junior competitions once they reach the age of 13 until they are 19 or more, when they will go on to the Senior Group. Boys can compete at Junior Level from the age of 14. The reason for this age difference is that boys tend to reach puberty later than girls. Have you noticed the Noticeboard? If so, The ASA / British swimming has recently reviewed its Data Protection Notice and made some changes. The notice outlines how they will collect and use your personal information from now on. To ensure all its members receive copies of the new notice we are being asked to ensure all members complete a new consent form. Please note that any member under the age of 18 will require a parent or guardian to complete on there behalf. We have been asked to get the completed forms back to the ASA by beginning of May If you have not already completed a new consent form, please collect one from the club desk Saturdays 4-6pm. Once completed, please post in Club Postbox (by trophy cabinet) for attention of Mandy Jermy. Thank you. There is now an allocated board exclusively used for information relating to ALL swimming events and selection sheets for all squads. The Swimming Events board is opposite the main run of Club noticeboards in the corridor to the fire exit. (it used to be for Masters only). There will be supply of entry forms available from here. Please check this noticeboard regularly and also the main information board opposite.

HIGHER SQUAD NEWS Report by Zoe Jones Ella Francis, Braden Daniels, Olivia Burden and Jack Ford are all being promoted to Advanced from April, having swum well in their test set and shown excellent determination and attitude. In the recent test set of 6 x 100 front crawl, Heidi McKeand showed excellent self discipline to average 1.53 on 2.15 cycles, knocking 29 seconds off her previous average. Ella Francis and Jack Flear, swimming on 2.15 cycles for the first time, averaged 11 and 17 seconds faster respectively! Well done everybody you are making good progress. SWIMMER OF THE MONTH for Advanced Squad is DEELAN SABIR for coming in every single training session since his promotion to Advanced in March and for his sheer hunger for success NEWS FROM INTERMEDIATE SQUAD - Liz Ward The first Novice Gala for our "HAWKS TEAM" for 10 years & under for 2010 was held on 27 Feb at Eastney Pool, the home of Portsmouth Northsea SC young club members. Our young swimmers competed against PNSC, Fareham Nomads and Locksheath. The other clubs brought along some strong swimmers, but we managed to get a few 1 st Places here and there. The most important thing, I believe, is that we had great team spirit and support and everyone had a great time. A special thank you to Mrs Sisson, Mr and Mrs Gibbons and Mr Hill for their invaluable help poolside. The next gala, a Fun Gala for under 10's, is to be held on 24th April. Chris Weekes assists Graham Pople with Foundation Squad on Thursday evening at Havant. On Saturday, Amy McKells assists with the Foundation Squad. Matt Lovett and Flossie Stirzaker also help out with Foundation. Learn how to teach SWIMMING There is a Level 1 Teaching Course for Swimming being run by Adrian Noble at Waterlooville in May The course is open to anyone over the age of 16 and will consist of 6 sessions run over two weekends. If you are interested and would like to know more please speak to Graham Pople before or after any of his Training Sessions (see swimming schedule) In line with ASA Policy, would all parents please note that they are not permitted to go onto the poolside during Training Sessions. The only exceptions are if you are CRB checked by H&WSC and have been specifically invited by a Coach to complete a particular task for example helping out with a test set. Ashleigh Guttridge and Michael Robinson also help assist Zoe on poolside at Havant with Higher Squad on Sunday. The assistance that these senior swimmers provide is invaluable to the Club s success. They are able to educate the young swimmers in Lane & Pool Etiquette, Stroke expectation and give them loads and loads of motivation! All Coaches are also Life Guards and the swimmers safety could be compromised if they are distracted by parents. If you wish to speak to your child s Coach, please arrange a mutually convenient time either before or after a training session. Thank you

Congratulations to three of our Master Swimmers who participated in the South East Regionals Long Course Masters Meet held on 30 th January Unfortunately, a reduced number of Master Swimmers were able to attend this meet, as it clashed with the re-scheduled (weather postponed) Chris Hunt Memorial Swim. However, between the three swimmers, Masters managed to notch up five medals from five swims which is not bad for a Regional Level Competition! Steve Tomlinson - 2 silver Emily Jones - 2 bronze, swimming as a Senior in her first Masters meet since just turning 18 Lynne Jones - 1 silver (her first for a Long Course Meet) CHECK OUT OUR NEW WEB PAGE! Masters have recently been given their own Web Page within the H&WSC Website. Check it out here lists all the Masters Information, Masters Meets and Schedules, Masters Records and anything else relating to Masters Swimming. Graham Pople was recently invited by the Portsmouth University, Department of Sport & Exercise, to provide volunteer swimmers from Performance Squad to assist with the study Reduction in Training Volume and its affect on competitive performance for a group of yrs competitive front crawl swimmers. The investigation was conducted by 3 rd year students, with the idea that reduced training may have a positive affect i.e. improved swim times. The results of the investigation may lead to improved future training regimes. Voluntary participating Performance swimmers were asked to keep a diary of how they felt on a daily basis, before and after training, whether they felt ill or tired and kept a record of what they ate daily. As part of their normal training cycle, periodically applied over a period of 2 months in December and January, testing was carried out, involving speed tests of 100m and 400m front crawl. During these speed tests, the swimmers heart rates were monitored, stroke rate, stroke count and blood lactate levels, using small finger prick samples of blood. Further studies with the university may be undertaken later in the year. Graham will be informed as to any useful results. BEAUCHAMP BOLDLY BREAKS BREAST STROKE CLUB RECORD! Graham Pople reports that Master swimmer Amanda Beauchamp has recently broken the Club Record for 50m Breastroke (Age yrs). Full details to follow in next issue of Newsplash with a centre page photo! Stroke Clinics It is possible that stroke clinics may be held over the summer period. Please watch this space for further information. If you or your Child is interested in participating in a stroke clinic please put your name down at the Club Desk so that Graham Pople can monitor the level of interest and plan some dates. NEWSPLASH Editor Tina Lewendon I hope you enjoyed reading Newsplash. If you have any information or news that you would like to share with the Club in the next issue, please Tina direct on AVSR17@DSL.PIPEX.COM
