2 I NTRODUCTION W ELCOME Welcome to the Downingtown East High School (DEHS) swimming and diving team! We look forward to working with parents and athletes. P URPOSE OF THIS H ANDBOOK This handbook has been prepared by the DEHS Swim/Dive Team Parent Board and coaches to provide information about the high school swim and dive season and our Parent Association. It will provide you with information about the team s practice times, meets, fundraising, team rules and expectations, and descriptions of areas that parents need to help in order to make the team run efficiently. It is our hope that it will help you enjoy and better understand the inner-workings of the DEHS swim/dive team. This is your opportunity to meet and greet the coaches, athletic director, and other parents and find out all of the details about our swim season. PIAA CIPE forms can be turned in at this time, but must be submitted before try-outs or the first practice to participate. Forms can be found online on the Downingtown East Athletics website at Dues should also be paid at this time. Swimsuits will be ordered, so come with your child s size and your checkbook! All parents are encouraged to attend! C OMMUNICATION Communication will be sent using three methods for this season. Please check all regularly for important updates to practice and meet information. 1. 4 V OLUNTEERING The swim team can only function through the efforts of parent volunteers. Parents are needed to volunteer at fundraising events and to bring donations to the team dinners. Each swimmer will be required to provide a volunteer to support the running of the meets held at our home location, Lionville Community YMCA. A sign up genius has been established for parents to choose their preferred date &/or volunteer position. Set up, clean up, announcer, timers and diving event scorers will be necessary for each meet to run. Based on the size of the team each year, the number of volunteer slots per family will be determined. Ideally, with 100% participation, each family will need to only assist at 2 roles this season. Additionally, console operator and scorer will be needed, though require training on these positions. Please see a board member if you are previously trained on one of these positions or are interested in learning those roles. The more hands on deck, the smoother the meets will run. Additionally, parents are needed to coordinate the following activities. 5 T EAM S TATISTICS The Downingtown East Sr. High School team is made up of a boys and girls swim and diving team and is a member of the Ches-Mont Swim League. The Ches-Mont Swim League is made up of 7 teams: Coatesville Area High School Downingtown West High School West Chester East High School Downingtown East High School West Chester Henderson High School Bishop Shanahan High School Avon Grove High School P RACTICE T IMES AND A TTENDANCE Practice will be held at the Lionville YMCA. Athletes should come to practice regularly as outlined by the coaches requirements and be prepared to do their best. Club swimmers should see the coach for their practice schedule. The practice schedule is shown below. Swim Team Practice Schedule-Starting Monday, Nov. 20th Date Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday Wednesday Times 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. 5:05 a.m. 6:30 a.m. Dive Team Practice Schedule-Starting Tuesday, Nov. 21st Date Tuesdays & Thursdays Times 8:00 p.m. 9:30 p.m. Christmas Week Practices Date December 26 th -29th Times 10:00am to 12:00pm T EAM F EES For the season, each swimmer will be required to pay BOTH swim team dues as outlined below and the school activity fee which will appear on the PayForIt system closer to the start of the season. At the end of last season, parents were solicited to determine if they would prefer fundraising activities or to increase dues. An overall majority of 75% opted to increase the dues in lieu of further fundraising. The team dues for this year will cover all, but is not limited to, the team suit, caps for swimmers, t-shirts, team equipment and team events. The school activity fee covers cost of the officials for meets, busses for away meets, and pool time at the Lionville Community YMCA. Additionally, Downingtown East covers one half of the cost of student bathing suits. The fee structure is outlined below. 5

Checks should be written to DE-STPA and paid at the parent meeting on October 5, S WIMMING A PPAREL& E QUIPMENT Athletes should wear the official DEHS swimsuit and cap at all meets. You may also want to consider buying a practice suit for your athlete and an additional cap. Other necessary equipment includes: goggles, towel, t-shirt &/or sweatshirt for swim meets. Team Apparel is available for individual purchase during Spirit Wear Sale for your swimmer to wear to meets also sweatshirts, sweatpants, etc. Some items will be on sale at the meeting on October 5, Information on this season s apparel will be sent home at the beginning of the season. T HE S EASON W HERE W E S WIM Our home pool is located at the Lionville Community YMCA at 100 Devon Drive in Exton. This is where the team practices along with the team from Downingtown West and competes at home meets. In the event a school with which we are competing does not have their own pool, the meet will be held at a nearby school or YMCA. The Parent Board and Coaching staff will make every effort to inform you of the specific location of away meets. R EGULAR S EASON M EETS Our team is required to compete in 10 dual meets a season, both league and non-league. P OST- S EASON C HAMPIONSHIP M EETS Post-season championship competition includes PIAA District One swimming (held at LaSalle University) and diving meets (held at North Penn High School) and PIAA State swimming & diving meets (held at Bucknell University). Participation in the PIAA District One meet is based upon qualifying times for swimmers and qualifying points for divers (see attached District One Qualifications). Participation in the PIAA State meet is based upon how our athletes place at their District meet and State-wide finish; beginning with the

7 05 season, there are no longer State qualifying times. The first time is automatic and the second is consideration. PIAA swim and dive informaiton can be found at: District One Meet Qualifying Times & Points District 1 Qualifying Times AAA Relay Events: There will be 4 (24 relay entries) heats of each relay event. Teams achieving the automatic time will automatically be entered in the event. The remaining openings will be filled with the next fastest teams whose times are equal to or faster than the consideration time. Individual Events: There will be 7 (42 individual entries) heats of each individual event. Swimmers who achieve the automatic time will automatically be entered in the event. The remaining openings will be filled with the next fastest swimmers whose times are equal to or faster than the consideration times. 8 PIAA S TATE C HAMPIONSHIP M EET Q UALIFICATIONS PIAA has changed the manner in which a swimmer qualifies for the PIAA State Meet. According to PIAA, a change was made in the qualifying format in the season to one that increases the number of qualifiers to the PIAA Swimming Championships. The first sixteen qualifiers for the PIAA State Meet will be based on how they place at their District Meet. Because of the large size of District One, the district into which our school resides, we will automatically send the first five place finishers at the District Meet on to the State Meet, regardless of their times, along with the Champions from the other 11 districts. The next best sixteen statewide times will also advance. This ensures that 32 qualifiers advance to the State Championship in each individual event. Therefore at the State Meet each individual event will have four complete heats of qualifiers. For relays, the top five finishers at the District One Meet will advance, along with the Champions from the other 11 districts and the next eight fastest statewide times, guaranteeing three heats of relays at the PIAA State Meet. Divers advance to the State Meet if they place in the top seven at the District One Meet. 9 SWIM MEET OFFICIALS Officials are present at all competitions to enforce the technical rules of swimming that ensure the competition is fair and equitable. STARTER/REFEREE The Starter is responsible for beginning the race and ensuring that all swimmers are given a fair and equitable start. The Referee is the final judge on all decisions on the pool deck. STROKE AND TURN JUDGES Once the race has started, the Stroke and Turn Judges are responsible for observing the swimmers performing their strokes and turns to ensure that all swimmers obey all the rules for the stroke that they are swimming. If a Stroke and Turn Judge observes a violation of the rules, the official raises his/her hand to signify that an infraction has occurred and that the swimmer is disqualified. A disqualification is recorded on a DQ slip stating what he/she saw that was illegal, which is forwarded to the Table workers. E VENTS AND S CORING SWIMMING Athletes are limited to competing in a maximum of 4 events, no more than two of which may be individual events (this includes diving as an individual event) 2 individual events and 2 relays or 1 individual event and 3 relays. In individual events, the first five places score with the following points awarded: In relays, the first three finishers score with points as follows: DIVING Each diver performs six dives, which are scored by judges using a scale of 10 to 0 at ½ point increments according to the following: Exceptional: 9 to 10 Excellent: 7 ½ to 8 ½ Good: 6 to 7 Satisfactory: 4 ½ to 5 ½ Deficient: 2 ½ to 4 Unsatisfactory: ½ to 2 Failed: 0 The points from each judge are added, and then multiplied by the dive s degree of difficulty to arrive at the point total for each dive. 10 200 Medley Relay 200 Freestyle 200 Individual Medley 50 Freestyle Diving 100 Butterfly 100 Freestyle 500 Freestyle 200 Free Relay 100 Backstroke 100 Breaststroke 400 Freestyle Relay A THLETE R ESPONSIBILITIES 1) Attend all mandatory events and practices. 2) Arrive at all practice sessions and meets 15 minutes prior to start or warm-up time. 3) Arrive for your event on time. 4) Call or the coach on or before meet day if you are sick and not going to the meet. 5) Practice and support good sportsmanship and teamwork. 6) Respect other athletes, parents, coaches and meet officials. 7) Be a team player. Cheer for your teammates, compliment others on their achievements, encourage others who are down, support the new athletes. 8) NO PHONES on the pool deck during the meet including diving events. 9) Swim or dive your personal best. Set goals and strive to achieve them. 10) Have fun! M EET P ROCEDURES AND P REPARATION ARRIVAL TIME AND ATTENDANCE ü In the event of an away meet, swimmers and divers need to listen to the announcements for their dismissal time. A bus will take the team to and from the meet. ü Meets begin promptly at the stated time and usually last about 2 to 2½ hours. ü All swimmers must ride the school bus to and from all away meets. If a special circumstance exists and the swimmer/diver cannot ride the bus back, you must have a note signed by your coach and the Athletic Director and then returned to your coach. ü The host team warms up before the visiting team. ü Diving is generally in the middle of the meet. 10

11 ü If a swimmer becomes ill prior to a meet, the coach must be notified ( or phone call) before the meet so that the lineup changes may be made. If a swimmer feels ill at the meet, they should talk to the coach immediately. AFTER THE MEET Even if your swimmer/diver has completed their events, they must stay with the team until the last event has been completed. If you do need to leave early, you must ask permission from your coach. 11

13 G ENERAL I NFORMATION R EGISTRATION M EETING Friday, September 22, :00pm DEHS Cafeteria The coach will call a brief meeting at the beginning of the school year for all potential athletes. The purpose of this meeting is to assess interest in joining the team and inform potential team members of the start of the season. S WIM T EAM R ULES Prior to attending team practices or participating in a meet, an athlete must complete an information sheet, register on LeagueMinder.com and have had a physical and signed Athlete Code. Athletes are required to wear the team suit and cap to compete at meets. Athletes are expected to be at practices and meets on time. If an athlete cannot attend a meet, they must communicate this to the coach as soon as possible. Failure to do so will affect many of the other swimmers at the meet. Coaches determine the meet entries for all athletes. C OMMUNICATION Our swim program cannot run successfully without effective communication among all participants. The following methods of communication are used. Coaches can be reached via or phone number. Please check your regularly! I NCLEMENT W EATHER If school is cancelled or if there is an early dismissal due to inclement weather, practice and meets will be cancelled. If school is delayed due to bad weather morning practice will NOT be held. Y EARBOOK P ICTURES Team pictures for the yearbook will be taken during the season. All athletes should plan to attend practice the day of the photo so that the entire team can be represented. Coaches will inform athletes of the day this photo is schedule to be taken.
