3 Southern Metro Swim League HealthQuest Hammerheads Summer Swim Team 2016 Thank you for your interest in our youth summer swim team. Our team is a member of the Southern Metro Swim League. This league is comprised of swim clubs in and around Johnston and Wake Counties. The Hammerhead Swim Team is focused on fitness, skills, competition and most of all FUN!!! The Southern Metro Swim League is based heavily on parental involvement and support during meetings, practices and weekly swim meets. Parental involvement is key to a successful swim, season for the children involved. We look forward to a successful season with YOUR HELP! Thanks!!!! Team Colors: Black, Grey & Gold Mascot: Hammerhead Shark Last day to register for the Hammerheads is Thursday, June 16 th, Organization The HealthQuest Hammerheads Swim Team is a summer recreational swim team for children 5 to 18 years of age. The team is open to HealthQuest members and non-members of the community. We are a member of the Southern Metro Swim League (SMSL), which competes amongst other SMSL swim teams throughout Johnston and Southern Wake counties. All swimmers and parents should become familiar with the rules and responsibilities outlined in this handbook to develop a clear understanding of their individual and family commitments to the team.

2. Eligibility Swim Team Membership is open to children 5 to 18 years of age. HealthQuest members receive a discounted swim team rate. Non-members are required to pay the swim team membership fee.

Revisions to the swim team roster (additions) will be permitted on a space - available basis, subject to approval by the Hammerhead Coaches. A final Roster must be turned into SMSL by the 2 nd meet therefore there will be no late registrations after June 16 th, 2016 Parent / Guardian participation is required for any swimmer to participate and remain eligible for team membership. (see responsibilities) Skill Requirement No competitive swimming experience is necessary; however, the participants must possess a basic knowledge of swimming and strokes. For the safety of all swimmers, parents and coaches, all swimmers must pass a simple swim test. Swim test and swimmer assessments can be conducted at any time during the pre-season (spring) with any Aquatic Staff. Passing the swim test is required before registration and payment of fees. Swimmer Age Groups Boys and girls compete in separate age specific groups. A swimmer's age group is determined based upon their age on June 1st. Swimmer competition age groups / distances are shown below: 6 and Under (25 meters - one length) 11 and 12 (50 meters - two lengths) 7 and 8 (25 meter - one length) 13 and 14 (50 meters - two lengths) 9 and 10 (25 meters - one length) 15 and 18 (50 meter - Two lengths) Ages 6 and under are allowed to swim 2 individual events per meet and 2 relays. Ages 7 and above are allowed to swim 3 individual events and 2 relays per meet or 4 individual and no relays. Ages are allowed to swim in 3 individual events and 2 relays or 4 individual and no relays. Competition events are grouped by gender and age groups (listed below) 6 & Under 11 & 12 7 & 8 13 & 14 9 & & & 18 Swimmers may swim up in age groups for individual events and relays but can not swim down.

Fees Registration Fee: Member $75 Non-member $85 *** 25% off each additional child *** Fees include: League dues, weekly practices, weekly meet entries, championship meet entries, participation and place ribbons for each weekly meet, team t-shirt, team Swim Cap and end of season party Other: Additional fees are optional such as parent t-shirts, team suits, special events, social activities, and special meets. These fees are not included in the registration fee. Notice of such fees will be announced prior to event. 4. Responsibilities Swimmers: Swim team members and their families have the responsibility to each other, Health- Quest facilities, and to other meet pools to respect people and pool property: All posted pool rules will be observed at HealthQuest and any visited pool. 1. NO DIVING, unless swimmer is under the direct supervision of a coach. Diving practice will not be permitted when swim team practice is not in session. 2. Swimmers must follow the direction of coaches and pool officials at all activities. 3. Horseplay, inappropriate language, or unsafe behavior will not be tolerated. 4. Only team swimmers will be allowed in the practice lanes during times. Individual cases must be approved by the coaching staff for purposes of assisting in the practice or to conduct official team business. Parents / observers are restricted to the pool deck (If there is a need to speak to a coach it needs to be before or after practice). 5. Swimmers under the age of 12 must be dropped off and picked up by a parent / guardian or responsible party in accordance with pool rules. 6. Food is not permitted in the aquatic area at HealthQuest. Please keep drinks to plastic bottled water. When visiting other pools for meets, please be respectful with snacks and trash. Absolutely no glass containers are allowed at any time or at any pool. 7. Any swimmer not adhering to these rules, the posted pool rules, or any rule established by the coaching staff may be suspended from team activities and the discretion of the coach. 8. For any serious or unsafe action(s), or repeat infractions of general rules, a swimmer is subject to temporary or permanent expulsion from the team. In such cases, the coach will notify the parents for appropriate action.

Whatever your skills or interest, family participation is required to remain on the team. Parental Involvement Opportunities: Transportation to and from practices and meets Time at weekly meets Stroke Judges Parent Representative Your role is to promote, support and encourage the goals of the team, the coaches and the swimmers. This includes swimmer attendance to practices and competition as well as team spirit, sportsmanship, and fund raising. It is essential for parent to: 1. Maintain a balanced perspective on the purpose and philosophy of swimming. 2. Adhere to and enforce all team and pool rules. 3. Participate in at least 1 regularly scheduled meet and Championships. Failure to meet this commitment subjects the swimmer to dismissal from the team. 4. Agree to secure a replacement if unable to fulfill an assigned duty. 5. Ensure the coaching staff is notified of absences, illnesses or other events affecting a team practice, or activity and will provide at least 48 hours notification of any absence from a scheduled swim competition. This includes vacations, or other activities to allow coaches time to adjust meet rosters. 6. Attend any swim team parents meetings called by the coaches or the Swim Team President. 5. Volunteer Agreement Each Swimmer must have a parent or family member participate in at least 1 regularly scheduled meet and Championships. Possible areas of parental participation at this time will include but are not limited to; Timers, Stroke and Turn Judges, Ribbons, Fundraisers, Social Activities, Start/Announcer, Snacks, Etc.

7 If a parent is unable to fulfill a duty previously signed up for, it is their responsibility to find a replacement and communicate the replacement to the coaches. Please note that any questions about a volunteer duty or training should be addressed pre-season to a coach. We are more than happy to train and teach the appropriate rules for swimming and actions for meets. 6. Communication Parent / Coach Communication Regular and open communications are essential for all team activities. Coaches are more than happy to address any questions or concerns before or after scheduled practice times or through a scheduled meeting. Please feel free to contact us here at HealthQuest anytime. Calls to coach s cell phones should be limited to emergency situations only. Vacation / Absenteeism Please communicate any scheduled vacations / camp / etc dates to the coaches at the beginning of the season so that we may put them on the attendance roster and plan appropriately for team events. If a swimmer is unexpectedly not able to compete in a scheduled meet event please give the coaches notice as soon as possible. 7. Practice and Meet Equipment Swim Suits Any one-piece or athletic style-swimming suit is appropriate for females and any trunk or jammer style suit is appropriate for male. Meet suits may be team suits or any black one-piece for females or black trunk or jammer style suits for males. This year we are planning to order Team Suits for male and female swimmers. Swimmers are not required to purchase the team swimsuit. Swim Caps All female swimmers are required to wear a swim cap for practices and meets. The caps are helpful for keeping the hair out of the mouth and eyes, as well as are beneficial for gliding through the water. Goggles It is highly recommended that all swimmers use properly fitting swim goggles. Goggles protect the health of swimmers eyes while significantly enhancing safety for turns, finishes and diving. Proper fit is essential for them to be useful. Goggles are mandatory for all practices and meets. We recommend bringing your regular and a back-up of pair of goggles to each meet (2 pairs). You never know when they will break. (HealthQuest sells adult and youth goggles in the pro-shop at the front desk)

Team Shirts Our goal is to see a sea of team shirts at each meet - Both swimmers and parents! This year each Swimmer s registration fee includes a Team T-shirt.

T-shirts are only ordered ONCE and must be ordered by June 16 th, 2016. No shirts will be available for sale after the initial team order. 8.

All swimmers are requested to be pool - side by 5:15 pm for away warm - ups. Any parent volunteers for the meet are asked to arrive no later than 5:15 pm. Each swim meet begins at 6:00 pm.

8 Team Shirts Our goal is to see a sea of team shirts at each meet - Both swimmers and parents! This year each Swimmer s registration fee includes a Team T-shirt. Team T-shirts are optional but are encouraged for parents and family. Shirts are available in youth and adult sizes. Information on ordering team shirts will be provided at the first practice. T-shirts are only ordered ONCE and must be ordered by June 16 th, No shirts will be available for sale after the initial team order. 8. Swim Team Practices/Meets Swim Meets Warm-ups begin at 5:30 pm. It is very important that your child gets an opportunity to warm up prior to swimming their first event. All swimmers are requested to be pool - side by 5:15 pm for away warm - ups. Any parent volunteers for the meet are asked to arrive no later than 5:15 pm. Each swim meet begins at 6:00 pm. Meets average 2-3 hours. Bring extra towels, sunglasses, sunscreen, water or drinks, lawn chair - most meets are held outdoors! A Swim Meet Schedule will be handed out. In the case of inclement weather on a meet day, it is the responsibility of the HOME team to cancel the meet. Please call the Aquatic Lap Pool phone and the message will announce any meet cancellations. Meets are usually called off by 4:00 on the day of the meet. RAIN DOES NOT ALWAYS CONSTITUTE A CANCELLATION!!! In the event of a meet cancellation, a make-up date will be determined by the HOME team. Make up dates will be announced as soon as possible. Directions for each away meet are listed in the back of the handbook.

9. Disqualifications Parents and swimmers should be aware of general rules that subject swimmers to a disqualification (DQ) during competitions.

9 9. Disqualifications Parents and swimmers should be aware of general rules that subject swimmers to a disqualification (DQ) during competitions. Parents are asked to explain DQs to their children and to re-enforce their purpose as a positive experience designed to identify and correct stroke errors making them better swimmers. Any unsportsmanlike conduct before, during or after the meet. Swimmer must start and finish the race in the same lane. Swimmers must use two hands, touching at the same time, at the finish of Breast stroke and Butterfly races. Bumping a lane rope is permitted, but swimmers must not use ropes to propel themselves in a forward motion. 10. Team Recognition End of Season Awards Ceremony will be held at the HealthQuest pool upon the completion of each swim season. Most Improved, MVP, and Coach s Award: One swimmer from each age group will be voted on by coaches. Individual Awards: Each swimmer will receive a trophy for their successful individual contributions to the swim team. Place and Participation Ribbons: Swimmers will receive place and participation ribbons for events throughout the season for each meet. 11.
