Auburn s fi rst-ever NCAA Championship came in 2002 in Austin, Texas when the Tigers scored 474 points, leaving the rest of the field behind with Georgia as its nearest competitor at 386 points. Prior to winning the championship, Auburn s best finish had been fourth in Auburn has not finished out of the top five at NCAAs since 1999 and has 10 top-five fi nishes all-time. Auburn s seven titles won at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Auburn is the most ever won by AU. The four titles won by Auburn on 2007 is the second-most all-time for the Tigers and ties the four titles won in Senior Rachel Goh and junior Ava Ohlgren return as Auburn s only NCAA Individual Champions. Junior Emily Kukors enters the meet with the most active All-America honors, earning 13 over her fi rst two seasons on The Plains. Maggie Bowen holds the Auburn record for NCAA Championships won with nine. She captured the titles in fi ve different events from Annie Lett ( ) holds the Auburn record for All-America honors with 26. Auburn ranks third all-time in NCAA Championships won with fi ve titles. Stanford leads with eight championships since the NCAA began crowning a women s swimming and diving champion in 1982, while Texas

4 4 trails with seven. Coming in behind Auburn is Georgia with four and Florida and Southern California with one each. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TIDBITS For the third time ever, Texas A&M will host the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the university s Student Rec Center Natatorium. Texas A&M previously hosted the men s championship in 2001 and the women s in The NCAA Women s Championship started in 1982 with Florida winning the fi rst title with 505 points. Auburn fi nished fourth in the fi rst NCAA Championship with 253 points. The fi rst Tiger to win an individual NCAA title was Marina Smith in 1993 as she won the 1-meter diving. Auburn s fi rst swimming title came the next year as the team of Stephanie Bowers, Keri Reynolds, Kristie Kruger and Allison Bock won the Medley Relay title. Auburn has qualified for all but one NCAA Championship since 1982, failing to qualify a team in AU has also won an individual championship every year since The Tigers have won an individual title in 13 different events. The only events Auburn has not won a title in are the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 fl y, 200 free relay, 3-meter diving and platform diving. FOR THE RECORD At last month s SEC Championships, the Auburn team of Ava Ohlgren, Caitlin Geary, Melissa Marik and Maggie Bird set a new US Open and NCAA record in the 800 free relay, shattering the seven-minute barrier with a time of 6: The time also set new American, SEC and Auburn records in the event. TIGERS DOMINATE EVENTS While Auburn has seen success in most of the events in the championship program, a few events stand out recently as being Auburn specialties. The Tigers have won the 400 IM in fi ve of the past eight years and return Ava Ohlgren, the 2007 champion in the event. The Individual Medley events have been Auburn specialties as the five titles in the 400 is the most of any event for the Tigers. Auburn has also won fi ve titles in the 200 IM with Ohlgren taking the title last season. Rachel Goh won the 100 back in 2006 and 2007 before taking a year off to compete in Australian Olympic trials, returning to look for her third title in the event. LAST TIME AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS For the seventh year in a row, the Auburn women s swimming and diving team finished its season as one of the top two teams in the country as the Tigers ended the 2008 NCAA Women s Swimming and Diving Championships runner-up to Arizona. The Tigers have won fi ve of the last seven NCAA team titles with the only other secondplace fi nish coming in 2005 to Georgia. Auburn fi nished the meet with 348 points, trailing Arizona and their 484 points. Stanford came in third with 343 while Texas A&M followed in fourth with 315. California rounded out the top five with 291 points. Arizona becomes the first non-sec team to win the NCAA team title since 1998 when a Stanford team coached by current Auburn head coach Richard Quick took the title. Auburn led after the first few events in the opening session, but Arizona pulled ahead to fi nish the fi rst day with a slight lead. The Wildcats extended that lead on Friday, but Auburn was able to maintain its hold on second. Then sophomore Ava Ohlgren won the second NCAA title of her career, timing in at 1:53.94 in the 200 IM. DORSEY TIERNEY-WALKER AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS In her fourth season as Auburn s co-head women s coach, Dorsey Tierney-Walker is also making her fourth appearance in pursuit of a NCAA title. She took over the team for the season, following a runner-up showing at the 2005 NCAA Championships, and has been at the top both 2-of-3 seasons. Tierney-Walker s predecessor, Kim Brackin, won Auburn s fi rst three championships from By winning her third in a row in 2008, Tierney-Walker would tie Brackin for championships won. Prior to coming to Auburn, Tierney-Walker served as women s head coach at Indiana from She boasted two top-10 finishes as the Hoosiers head coach, including a ninth-place fi nish, her career best at that point, in her fi nal season in Tierney-Walker is also in the unique situation of having won NCAA Championships as both a swimmer and a coach. While swimming at Texas from , the 16-time All-American swam on Texas 1990 and 1991 NCAA Championship squads, winning the 200 breast in IN CONTROL OF THE SEC While Florida has dominated the SEC since the conference began conducting a women s swimming and diving championship in 1981, Auburn has definitely made its presence known in recent years as the Tigers have won fi ve of the last seven SEC Championships. Auburn also has an impressive record in conference dual meets, winning 47 of its last 50 SEC dual meets, dating back to JUNIOR LEADERSHIP Junior Ava Ohlgren has her name on 2009 NCAA Post-Season Guide a team high seven NCAA automatic cut times, including individual A cuts in the 200 free, 200 fl y, 200 IM and 400 IM. The Northville, Mich., native currently sits in the all-time top-10 performance lists in nine events including holding school records in the 200 free, 200 fl y and 400 IM. It is an honor and I am actually leaving next week to go to a national team retreat and I am really excited about that, getting to meet new people, experience new things and get in the right direction as far as getting faster and getting better. Ohlgren was also honored to get a spot on the team, but more excited at reaching a longtime goal. I think it is awesome, it has been one of my goals for a while and I kept barely missing it, so it is great to finally make it, said Ohlgren. It is great being a part of the national team and you get some awesome opportunities with it. Also making their way onto the team are former Tigers Mark Gangloff (100 breast), Eric Shanteau (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM), Kara Denby (50 free) and Margaret Hoelzer (100 back, 200 back). Gangloff, who represented the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics, earns his way on the team with his 100 breast time of 1:00.10 that finished second at Olympic Trials. Shanteau, also an Olympian, led the Auburn contingent by making the team in three events. His time of 1:00.63 in the 100 breast finished third at Olympic Trials while his 2:10.10 at the Olympics placed him 10th in the 200 breast semifinals. 24 Jeff SHAFFER Head Diving Coach University of Wisconsin (1980) Jeff Shaffer came to Auburn 10 years ago as one of the most respected coaches in the diving community. Now, 51, Shaffer has improved the Auburn diving program in Olympic-size proportions. In nine short years, Shaffer, who was named the SEC Men s Diving Coach of the Year in 2008, has made the Auburn diving program into a complete complement to the Auburn swimming program, no small task when you consider that the swimming and diving squad has amassed 12 national titles. Last season, under the direction of Shaffer, Auburn s Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro made the finals on all three boards at the NCAA Championships, accounting for 50 of Auburn s points at the meet while earning six All-America honors. His divers also won two of the three boards at the SEC Championships with Marx taking top honors on the 1-meter and Mazzaferro earning first on the platform. During the season, Steven Segerlin captured his first NCAA springboard title on the 3-meter while picking up his second platform title in a row, extending the AU streak to five, and with this victories secured the Tigers seventh overall NCAA team crown. For his efforts, Segerlin was named NCAA Male Diver of the Year. Segerlin also swept the titles on all three boards at the SEC Championships, becoming just the third diver in SEC history to pull off the feat. Another impressive feat from the 2007 NCAA Championships was the 99 points contributed to Auburn s total of 566 by the divers. The mark breaks the previous high total of 93 points at the 2004 Championships. The three Tiger divers, Segerlin, Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro, also accounted for seven All- America honors. Just one week prior to Segerlin s performance, Shaffer coached sophomore Corey Gerlach and senior Lynnsey Segraves to All-America honors. Gerlach fi n- ished 10th on the 3-meter and 15th on the 1-meter as Segraves was sixth on the 3-meter and ninth on the platform. The points earned by their fi nishes proved to be vital in the women s fifth NCAA team crown. At the conclusion of the year, he was given USA Diving s Coach of Excellence Award after guiding the Tigers to the 2004 USA Diving Men s Team Championship. Shaffer s biggest accomplishment to this point may have been the signing of Caesar Garcia in his fi rst recruiting class seven years ago. Garcia went from an All-American as a freshman, who had also finished dead-last at the 2000 USA Olympic Team Trials, to a two-time NCAA platform champion the SEC and NCAA Male Diver of the Year in 2004 and a XXVIII Olympian by the time his stay on the Plains had ended. This earned Shaffer a coaching spot on the 2004 USA Olympic Coaching roster. He also drastically helped Ashley Rubenstein, one of his other first-class signees, transform into a fourth-place fi nisher on the 1-meter as a senior, as well as a 2004 USA Olympic Team Trials fi nalist, a National Team Member and most recently the 2006 U.S. National title on 1-meter. 26 Dorsey T Co-Head Women s Coach University of Texas (1992) Fourth Season Dorsey Tierney-Walker begins her fourth season as the co-women s head coach on the Auburn staff after directing the Tiger women s team to its fifth overall SEC title last season, the second of her career. Tierney-Walker has a record in dual meets, including a 21-2 mark since taking over at Auburn. The Tigers have defi nitely been impressive since she arrived on campus as Auburn has two NCAA team titles to go along with seven individual NCAA titles in her three years on campus. Auburn has also racked up 155 All-America honors from 30 different athletes. AU has also picked up 23 SEC individual titles along with two team titles since Tierney-Walker came to the Plains. Dorsey Tierney-Walker has a pretty extraordinary record here at Auburn, winning two NCAA Championships in the two years she has been here, said head coach Richard Quick. I definitely think the intensity and the caring that she brings to her athletes is the reason that the women s team has been so successful the last two years. She is one of the really fi ne coaches in this country and she can coach the developing swimmer as well as the international-level athlete. Last season, Tierney-Walker coached the Tigers to their fifth SEC team title, the second in a row, and a runner-up fi nish at the NCAA Championships. Auburn won nine SEC individual titles, including an American record 800 free relay, en route to scoring points for the title in Tuscaloosa. At NCAAs, Ava Ohlgren picked up AU s lone individual title (200 IM) as the Tigers used a total team effort to fi nish second with 348 points. In , Auburn erased a 32-point final-day defi cit for a 58-point victory over Arizona. In all, the Tigers earned 57 All-America honors from 19 studentathletes. The Tigers also picked up four individual NCAA titles as Rachel Goh won the 100 back, Ohlgren won the 400 IM, Hayley Peirsol won the 1,650 free and Adrienne Binder won the 500 free. Following the meet, Tierney-Walker and David Marsh shared the NCAA Coach of the Year honors. The performance at NCAAs was a carry-over from a dominating performance at the SEC Championships. Earning her third conference title as a coach, Tierney- Walker led the Tigers to 899 points at SECs, beating out their nearest competitor, Georgia, by 228 points. Auburn won 10 SEC titles at the meet, including three by Ohlgren as she was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Tierney-Walker and Marsh picked up SEC Coach of the Year honors. The 2006 NCAA Women s Championships will go down in history as the most exciting national meet ever, as the team race was decided by the fi nal relay. Auburn came out on top by three points over defending national champion and host Georgia. Under the tutelage of Tierney-Walker, Hoosier swimmers claimed a total of 99 All-American certifi cates during her time in Bloomington. Additionally, Tierney- Walker s swimmers secured nine individual and two relay Big Ten titles. As a team, the Hoosiers finished in the top 16 at the NCAA Championships in each of her fi nal four seasons, including a ninth-place fi nish in 2005, the highest finish in Indiana history. The 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Tierney-Walker inherited a team that fi nished fi fth in the conference the season prior to her first year at the helm of the Indiana program. Seven seasons later, she had coached IU to five top-three fi nishes in the Big Ten and amassed a (.731) dual meet record. In 2005, her fi nal season at Indiana, the Hoosiers had five swimmers earn a total of 17 All-America honors while in 2004, 12 swimmers claimed honorable mention All-American honors in some fashion. The 2004 season also saw another first for a Tierney-Walker as she instructed the 200 freestyle relay team of Annica Lofstedt, Erin Smith, Tammy Kostner and Meghan Medendorp to All-America honors with an eighth-place fi nish. It was the fi rst time during her tenure that a Hoosier relay team qualifi ed for the championship fi nals. In six out of Tierney-Walker s seven years, a Hoosier relay or individual claimed a Big Ten title. Remarkably, over her last four years, Tierney-Walker s swimmers broke every IU swimming record. During the season, IU set 10 school records and prior to that, the campaign, 12 of the 19 records fell, including four of five relays. At the 2001 Big Ten Championships, her swimmers broke 18 of the 19 IU swimming records and set 36 personal best times. At the 2003 Big Ten Championships, Indiana outdistanced second-place Wisconsin, , behind the force of tremendous team depth. 29 Brian PURSLEY Assistant Coach North Carolina State (2004) Second Season Brian Pursley enters his second season on the Auburn staff a er helping the team to a sweep of the SEC Championships and a pair of top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships last season. The elder Pursley is now the head coach of Great Britain Swimming, helping the country to prepare to host the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Prior to coming to Auburn, Pursley spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Arizona State, where he helped guide both the men s and women s teams to top-25 finishes at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Prior to coaching at North Carolina State, he was a two-year swimmer for the Wolfpack, serving as team captain during the season. He is currently ranked in the top-five all-time at N.C. State in the 100 breast (55.47) and the 200 breast (2:01.18).
