For the last 11 years, Fraser has also served as a starter for the annual PGA Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament and is the owner of a printing business in Las Vegas. Fraser and his wife, Barbara, are the parents of three grown sons, all of whom grew up swimming and lifeguarding in Las Vegas. JUST GO OFF On Jan. 21, 1993, Brian Fischer, a distance freestyler on the men s team from , died in a fire and explosion in his apartment. A tenacious competitor with a great work ethic, Fischer had a saying that became the rallying cry of the team for the remainder of that season. His big phrase prior to a race was just go off. The team did as Fischer would have wished by moving forward and remembering how he lived life to the fullest. The rallying cry will never be forgotten as it has been inscribed on a banner which hangs in the natatorium. 34 UNLV MEN S & WOMEN S SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE

24 THE MOUNTAIN WEST COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 11th season of competition in , Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities po ies for MWC institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue, directed the league through expansion and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MWC teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its nine athletic programs. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son, Ted, and a daughter, Emma. BIRTH OF A CONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions - Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming - decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. TCU began its first year of competition in , completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springsbased league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC s newest member, TCU. ACHIEVEMENTS MWC members have participated in 36 bowl games in 10 years with eight of the nine schools going to at least one postseason event. The MWC has earned 45 postseason bids in men s basketball, including 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, while women s basketball has tallied 27 NCAA bids, four Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 10 years while capturing seven NCAA team championships during that span. MOUNTAIN WEST QUICK FACTS Founded: 1998 Commisioner: Craig Thompson Mailing Address: Gleneagle Drive, Suite 200 Colorado Springs, Colo Phone: (719) Fax: (719) Swim/Dive Contact: Katie Cavender Office Phone: (719) Cell Phone: (775) YEAR IN REVIEW The MWC celebrated its 10th Anniversary in style, beginning in football in which the conference sent five teams to bowl games for the second consecutive year. Three MWC football teams finished the season in final top 25 polls, including two in the top 10, for the first time in league history. Utah s No. 2 and TCU s No. 7 ranking in the final polls marked the first time two teams from non-automatic-qualifying conferences have been ranked in the top 10 since Utah, BYU and New Mexico shared the league s regular-season crown in men s basketball. Overall, the league sent six teams into postseason action for the third time in 10 years. In women s basketball, San Diego State and Utah shared the MWC regular-season title, and overall, the league had four teams participate in postseason action. Colorado State joined MWC volleyball regular-season champion Utah in the postseason, while BYU represented the league in the NCAA women s soccer tournament. UNLV represented the MWC in the NCAA Men s Swimming and Diving Championships, while UNLV and BYU provided participants on the women s side in NCAA postseason action, which was highlighted by UNLV freshman Zsuzanna Jakabos All- American performance in the 400-yard IM. Five MWC men s golf teams were invited to the 2009 NCAA Regionals for the ninth time in the last 10 years. Three MWC women s golf teams received Regional bids, with New Mexico and TCU advancing to the 2009 NCAA Championships. Multiple MWC women s tennis teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive year. The league sent SDSU, UNLV and BYU to the NCAA Softball Tournament, the sixth time in 10 years the league had multiple teams selected. A record-breaking three teams represented the conference in the NCAA Baseball Championship, while San Diego State s Stephen Strasburg, became the MWC s first No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball Draft.
