BUCHANAN NATATORIUM Named after former Nevada System Board of Regent James L. Bucky Buchanan II in 1980, the Buchanan Natatorium was officially dedicated on June 12, 1981.

2 BUCHANAN NATATORIUM Named after former Nevada System Board of Regent James L. Bucky Buchanan II in 1980, the Buchanan Natatorium was officially dedicated on June 12, The former regent was an avid swimmer and supporter of UNLV athletics until his passing in the fall of Buchanan Natatorium has hosted and continues to host several major meets. The Western Athletic and West Coast conferences have held their annual championships at the facility. In addition, the swimming portion of the US Olympic Sports Festival brought the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists Matt Biondi, Janet Evans and Pablo Morales to the Buchanan Natatorium in In 1999 at the 15th annual Winter Invite, Natalie Coughlin broke an American record in the 100 back. The Big West Conference (then known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) held its annual men s and women s championships at the pool in 1985, and the women s meet only in 1984 and 86. The UNLV men s water polo team, coached by Wes Mock, called the pool home from The natatorium is located adjacent to the men s and women s locker rooms within the Paul D. 3 BUCHANAN NATATORIUM Originally dubbed the UNLV Natatorium, the school s swimming pool was built in 1974 and opened for use in The natatorium boasts a 50-meter indoor pool with two bulk heads, and has seating for 1,200. The pool has a 733,000-gallon capacity. A full record board was added to the walls of the facility for the season, while a new timing system and results scoreboard was installed prior to the start of the season. Following the end of the season, the natatorium underwent a complete and total renovation from the walls in. The renovation, which was completed in Deceber of 2009, includes the following New pool New pool deck New diving boards New bulkhead New drainage and plumbing system Other changes made to the facility included changing the pool itself from aluminium to concrete, and the shallow end was changed from four feet to eight feet deep, giving the option to use both ends of the pool for competition at the same time. 4 JIM REITZ HEAD SWIMMING COACH 32ND SEASON WASHINGTON 75 As Jim Reitz enters his 32nd season as head coach of the UNLV swimming program, he shows no signs of slowing down in his goal to keep the Rebels recognized as one of the most prominent programs in the nation. The past seven years in fact has seen the most successful stretch in the history of the Rebel swimming and diving program, which includes several individual All-American performances as well as a record-run of conference championships. Reitz has now led the UNLV men s squad to a conference record seven straight MW championships, which are also the first seven in school history for the men s program after several close calls in its 31-year history. Reitz also guided the UNLV women to the 2005 MW crown to give the Rebels a sweep of the league titles that season. It was the fourth alltime conference championship for the women, as they won the Big West in 1984, 1991 and The Rebels were also runner-ups on the women s side in the MW championship in 2008 and The season was by far the best year ever for the Rebel men, as the team finished the regular season ranked 16th in the nation and claimed the first-ever top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships, placing 19th with a school-record HEAD COACH 57 points. Eight Rebels would score in the championships, highlighted by the team s eighth-place swim in the 400 medley relay, which earned them All-American honors. Cody Roberts (14th, 100 fly) and Kier Maitland (12th, 1650 free) both scored in their events to earn honorable mention All-American. Roberts was also the star of the MW Championships, setting two new league marks on the way to earning MW Swimmer of the Year honors and leading UNLV to a seventh championship, 97.5 points ahead of second-place BYU. In the campaign, the team ranked in the top 25 for the entire season for the first time in school history and finished the season with the highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships, a tie for 21st place. That was in big part due to the Rebels 200 medley relay, which became the first in school history with a top-eight finish (eighth), earning relay All-American honors. And for just the second time in school history, UNLV saw two of its swimmers score individual points, with Maitland (10th in the 1650 free) and Cody Roberts (15th in the 100 fly) both earning honorable mention All- American honors. The Rebels also cruised at the 2010 MW Championships with a point win over the rest of the field. Maitland received his second-straight MWC Swimmer of the Year honor as well. At the 2009 championships, the UNLV men quickly took control from the start and never looked back on the way to a point lead over Air Force for the largest win-margin in the 10-year history of the conference. Meanwhile, UNLV s women came in a strong second, less than 60 points behind BYU. The Rebels set a total of 15 conference records on the way to 20 total first-place finishes. UNLV would also score at the NCAA women s championships for the first time since 2001, placing 37th thanks to an All-America performance from Zsuzanna Jakabos, while the Rebel men earned a national REITZ S CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR AWARDS Men Big West 1987, 1996 Mountain West 2000, 2001, 2005, , 2009, 2011 Women Big West 1984, 1991, 1994 Mountain West UNLV Men s & Women s Swimming & Diving Media Guide

5 JIM REITZ ranking for the first time at the end of the season, and were a false start away from having their 200 free relay earn All-America status. UNLV would send a total of six men to the 2009 NCAA championships, and two on the women s side. And for the second straight year, UNLV swept the Swimmer of the Year awards, with Maitland claiming the men s while Jakabos was honored on the women s side was just as impressive a season for the Rebels, as the UNLV men entered the league meet expecting to face a big fight in the quest to defend their title, but instead cruised to the championship with a point margin over second place BYU. The UNLV women meanwhile earned a runner-up finish. Even more impressive, the teams combined to win 24 events, and set eight new conference records while posting 16 new UNLV marks. UNLV also swept the Swimmer of the Year and Senior Recognition awards. Following the meet, Kim Bonney represented the women s team at the NCAA Championships, while UNLV sent five swimmers to the NCAA Men s Championships. Reitz also saw two of his seniors from the squad swim for their respective country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jonas Andersson (Sweden) and Richard Hortness (Canada), while Rebel alum Joe Bartoch also competed for Canada. The five-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year (1984, 1991 and 1994 women s, 1987 and 1996 men s) and eight-time MW Coach of the Year (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011 men s, 2005 women s) has taken programs that were non-existent and built them into consistent winners. Surrounded by talented assistant coaches, Reitz and his staff are devoted to the goal of becoming a program that battles for a place in the top 25 on a yearly basis. He emphasizes consistency and intensity during training. Both the men s and women s programs have produced numerous All-Americans while rising to national prominence and consistently scoring at the NCAA Championships under Reitz. In his 31 years at UNLV, Reitz has taken swimmers to the NCAA Men s Championships 15 times, including eight as members of the Mountain West. The team s best-ever finish at the national meet was in 2011, when UNLV finished 19th with 57 points. UNLV has sent swimmers to the women s championships six times, with its best finish coming in 1986 when Sally Fleisher earned All-America honors in the 50 free and scored in two more events to help UNLV place 24th with 34 points. In addition, Reitz has sent several swimmers to represent the U.S. National Team, as well as numerous Rebels that have gone on to swim for their native countries in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games and the World University Games. Reitz expects the same consistency and intensity from his students-athletes in the classroom as he does in the pool. Year-in and year-out, the Rebels have had the majority of their swimmers named to the Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The Rebels have also earned national recognition for their academic standards, as eight swimmers have won CoSIDA Academic All-District honors over the past four seasons, while Kim Bonney was a second team Academic All- American in A native of Seattle, Wash., Reitz coached 15 years before coming to UNLV. He coached at both Cascade and Seattle Swim clubs and was head of the physical education departments at Shorewood High School in Seattle. Reitz moved to Las Vegas in 1976 and began coaching the Sandpiper Swim Team before taking over the reigns of the Rebel programs in Reitz earned bachelor s degrees in physical education and psychology from the University of Washington in He and his wife, Nina, have two children, Emily (30) and Ben (27). 6 KUNIO KONO KUNIO KONO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH 9TH SEASON ALABAME 03 Kunio Kono begins his ninth season with the Rebel swimming program. In the summer of 2010 he was elevated to the position of associate head coach. Kono coaches the men s and women s sprint group. While at UNLV, He has coached seven swimmers to All-America honors, and sent several swimmers over the past five years to the World University Games, World Cup, Pan Pacific Championships, Pan American Games, the European Championships and three swimmers to the Beijing Olympics. Kono joined the Rebels from the University of Alabama, where he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach. He was responsible for coaching the sprint groups and assisted in the recruiting efforts. Kono coached three men and two women to All-America honors, and the Tide men had their highest national finish since 1994, taking 12th place. The women posted their highest finish since 1996, taking 15th at the NCAA meet. During his tenure at Alabama, Kono was also the head coach of the Masters Swim Team. He coached eight of the highest point scorers in different age groups and led his team to the Alabama State Masters Meet title in spring From , Kono served as the men s and women s swimming operations manager at the University of Arizona. During those seven seasons, the Wildcat men s swimming program went from a No. 16 national ranking in 1994 to No. 3 in Kono also helped the women s team into the top-five in the nation for several years and to the highest finish in Arizona s history, when it finished second at NCAA in In his time at Arizona, he helped coach 15 men and 16 women to All-America honors and coached seven student-athletes that went on to participate in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. Kono spent the season as a volunteer assistant coach with the USC Trojans Swim Club and coached several swimmers who went on to compete in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Kono is a 2003 graduate of the University of Alabama with a master s degree in health science. He earned his undergraduate degree in visual communication from the University of Arizona. He is married to Miho Kawabe, bronze medalist in synchronized swimming at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. JULIE WEDDLE JULIE WEDDLE DIVING COACH 9TH SEASON NEVADA, RENO 03 Julie Weddle begins her ninth season as the head diving coach with the UNLV swimming and diving program.

She spent three years as the assistant coach of the Nevada Diving Club in Reno and served as the assistant diving coach in the Washoe County School District.

She finished fifth in the three-meter diving event at the 2001 WAC Championship meet, and finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the one- and threemeter boards at the NCAA Zone meet.

7 JULIE WEDDLE JULIE WEDDLE DIVING COACH 9TH SEASON NEVADA, RENO 03 Julie Weddle begins her ninth season as the head diving coach with the UNLV swimming and diving program. Prior to joining UNLV, Weddle served as diving coach for the Clark County High School Sunrise Division in Las Vegas. She spent three years as the assistant coach of the Nevada Diving Club in Reno and served as the assistant diving coach in the Washoe County School District. Weddle was a four-year letterwinner at Nevada, Reno. She finished fifth in the three-meter diving event at the 2001 WAC Championship meet, and finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the one- and threemeter boards at the NCAA Zone meet. She finished second in the one-meter diving event and third in the three-meter at the 2000 Big West Championships. As a sophomore, she took eighth in the 1-meter competition at the 1999 Big West Championships and qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships. She graduated from UNR in 2002 with a bachelor s degree in health ecology. Weddle and her husband, Justin, have one son, Karter. UNLV Men s & Women s Swimming & Diving Media Guide 7

Featuring an individualized conditioning regimen, players follow a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power and speed. Mike Gerber and Jason Kabo are responsible for the year-round training of men and women student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports. The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center s 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms. The 1,200-square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic areas catered to each sport. SPORTS MEDICINE Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson.

11 SPORTS MEDICINE Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV studentathletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. UNLV Men s & Women s Swimming & Diving Media Guide 11

From dusty lots with only a few buildings to the lush, ever-expanding setting, the campus continues to respond to the demands of an always increasing enrollment. The university boasts of a nationally competitive business programs and a school of hotel administration that attracts students from around the globe. With almost 250 undergraduate, masters and doctoral degree programs in 15 colleges, UNLV offers the student-athlete an array of educational opportunities. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Housed in the Flora Dungan Humanities Building, a team of academic advisors work with the 17 men s and women s sports ensuring student-athletes receive personalized care regarding their progress in education. Advisors work with their sport-specific studentathletes in scheduling, tutoring, degree progress and NCAA eligibility. Providing even greater challenges, students who maintain a 3.5 grade point average can apply for entrance into UNLV s honors program.
