6 Northwest Conference 2002 PREVIEW (Provided by NWC Office-Steve Flegel) Whitworth is Picked to Win NWC Volleyball Title Spokane, Wash. -- Defending 2001 Northwest Conference co-champion Whitworth College has been picked by NWC volleyball coaches to return to the top of the standings in The Pirates, led by 2001 NWC Player of the Year Julie Weatherred, finished 21-6 last season and tied Puget Sound for the conference title with a 14-2 record. Whitworth lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to the University of La Verne, the eventual national champions. The Pirates, who return four starters including Weatherred, picked up seven first place votes and 86 total points. Puget Sound, which finished 17-4 overall along with its co-championship in the NWC, took the other two first place votes and 76 total poll points. The Loggers will be led by 2000 NWC Player of the Year Karen Elmgren and return five starts from last year. Pacific Lutheran, George Fox and Linfield were bunched closely in the 3rd-5th place positions in the poll. PLU was third with 55 points, followed by George Fox (53) and Linfield (50). 8 2002 University of Puget Sound Logger Volleyball OUTLOOK Mark Massey Talks Keys, Puzzle Pieces and Volleyball: Looking Back: The University of Puget Sound had what most would consider a very successful 2001 campaign. In the eyes of Coach Massey, the season fell short of what the Loggers had set out to accomplish. With a 17-4 overall mark and a 14-2 Northwest Conference record and earning the Loggers a Co-Championship in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers were not awarded an at large berth to the NCAA national tournament, although ranked in the top 20 throughout most of the season, with a ranking of 12th in the AVCA coaches poll. Coach Massey doesn't foresee any changes with the NCAA and the opportunity to have two teams earning berths from the NWC to the national tournament. "Until the NCAA changes the entire system at the national level, our conference will continue to be awarded just the one berth, which is the NWC champion," noted Massey. Looking Forward: Head Coach Mark Massey now in his sixth year with the University of Puget Sound has a overall mark and has several reasons to be excited about the 2002 team. The Loggers return five starters, ten total letter winners and will bring in seven newcomers. It will be a mixture of old and new for the 2002 team as Massey will work to discover how all the pieces will fit together in order to make a run at the Northwest Conference Title and a berth to the National tournament. Fitting the Pieces Together: Coach Massey has many unknowns for the upcoming season. There are several combinations Massey could put on the floor, much depends upon the development of the new players and who steps forward among the returners. Each player brings a different dimension to the team, it is up to Coach Massey to discover how all the pieces will fit together, in order to get the Loggers in the hunt for another NWC title and back to the national tournament. Look for the Loggers to continue running the 'swing offense' this season. Passing will be the key to running the offense successfully. The Loggers lost a major part of the ball-control due to graduation but with the new libero position and a year of rally scoring under their belts Massey will look to utilize the swing offense even more this season. "We have the pieces to build off of and it will take some time to get comfortable with the swing patterns, we have the talent to make the offense flourish," said Massey. Who's Back: All-Northwest Conference first team and AVCA All-Region first team players Karen Elmgren, and Adriane Ougendal, are two keys for the Loggers. Elmgren was also awarded AVCA All-America second team honors. The dynamic duo combined for nearly 10 kills per game as Ougendal hit for a.300 average and Elmgren a.318 average. The Loggers, as a team averaged 16 kills per game and hit for a.241 team average. Coach Massey will look for strong leadership from Elmgren and Ougendal and feels each has ample incentive to have an outstanding campaign. "I am approaching this season with great purpose," stated Ougendal. "The start of the season it is going to be fast paced. "I believe I can contribute more this season than last and I look forward to getting out on the floor with my teammates and discovering how good we can become," continued Ougendal. Another returner for the Loggers is senior, Angie Cashman, an undersized middle hitter, with tremendous work ethic who is a consistent performer for Coach Massey. "I want to bring positive energy to the team. My goal is to lead by example. My lack of height, playing the middle position is not a determent to me. I try to utilize my knowledge of the game and I rely on my instincts as a player," said Cashman. The Loggers also have Junior Megan Apperson returning in the setter role. Apperson averaged 7.18 assist last season, sharing the setting position with Trisha Kawamoto, who graduated. Apperson is a big key for the Loggers in running the difficult swing offense. She must remain healthy. Other returners are Tera Anderson who had a solid firstyear, breaking into the starting line-up and averaging 2.77 kills per game. Outside hitters, Anela Iaea and Stephanie Ferris also return along with middles Sarah Bliss and Maran La Grave. Defensive specialist Kari Hayashi is back as well. New Arrivals: There will be several new faces on the court vying for playing time this season. Coach Massey will add seven newcomers to the roster and the returning athletes have taken notice as well. "I have watched Coach Massey transform this team over my four years here at Puget Sound. My first year, I was the biggest player we had. Now, I see even bigger players who can dominate the net and I think we have the potential to become a team that terminates the ball and put up big blocks," remarked Ougendal. Hillary Scott a transfer from Western New Mexico, standing at 6-1, should provide a quality block and give Coach Massey another offensive weapon on the right side. The right side position could one of the key positions for the Loggers this year. If Puget Sound can have a consistent threat on the right side, it could free up more one-on-one opportunities for the middle and outside hitters. Another transfer is 6-2 outside hitter, Angie Straw from Skagit Valley CC. The rest of the team will be made up of first year players; Morgan Baggee, middle hitter, Alena Bennett middle hitter, Jen Davis, middle hitter, Nikki Esposito outside hitter and Emily Sablehaus, setter. Sablehaus is the only other setter for Puget Sound, her development is another key for Puget Sound, if Apperson can not remain healthy. Rule Changes, Impact the Game: It took some time to have the fans understand the new scoring system as for the coaches and players they are still tinkering with the system. Rally scoring, in which a point is awarded each serve, regardless of which team is serving had a big impact upon the game of volleyball. Coach Massey felt the impact was felt more physiologically rather than physically for his team. "As a coach I felt it was much more difficult for me to control the outcome of the game. The physiological pressure was a constant with each point. Being a great side-out team as we have been in years past no longer had as big an impact upon the game," said Coach Massey.

9 2002 University of Puget Sound Logger Volleyball OUTLOOK Another rule change that will be implemented in the 2002 season, is the Libero position. The libero is a designated back-row player, intended to be used as a ball-control specialist. The libero is allowed to replace any player in the back row without counting as a substitution. There is no limit to the number of libero replacements a team is allowed. It will be easy to identify the libero, as the uniform must contrast from the color of her teammates' uniform. One libero is designated for each game. "I believe this will have a huge impact upon the game. You can keep your libero on the court two-thirds of the time. Research shows the libero, which should be one of your best natural passers, can be a big pay-off, as solid passing initiate offense and we need passing to run the swing offense," noted Massey. Teams will be allowed unlimited libero replacements and 12 team substitutions will be allowed per game. Some of the Do's and Don'ts of a Libero: May not serve. Can play only in the back row. May not block or attempt to block. Can not attack the ball, if the contact is made while the ball is completely above the net. Must remain on the bench for one point after she is subbed out before returning to the game. A teammate may not attack a ball completely above the net that a libero set to her from the attack zone using an overhand finger pass. Pre-Season, Tournament...Tournament Tournament: The pre-season in store for the Logger team could be described as big, bigger, biggest as the team will play in three tournaments prior to the start of NWC league play. Up first for Puget Sound is the Lewis & Clark/ Cascade College Tourney. Coach Massey will use the first tournament as a discovery phase. "I would like to have things settled down with regards to a starting line-up by the end of this tournament. My goal is to discover the best combinations and put them out on the floor," remarked Massey. The second pre-season tournament will be held at Whitworth College. It will be the Loggers only West Region competition and an important stepping stone for the team to build momentum. The Loggers could play three West Region teams, (other than those in the NWC), in the tournament and take a look at the Whitworth Pirates while they are there. The last pre-season tournament is the prestigious Washington University National Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri. "This will be an incredible challenge for the team. Each match will offer remarkable competition. I believe this tournament to be a great opportunity for our team. I think it should prepare us mentally for the NWC season, remarked Massey. In the challenging Northwest Conference, the Loggers were picked to finish second by the NWC Volleyball coaches poll, with 76 points. Whitworth College was picked first, receiving seven first place votes and 86 total points. "That sounds about right, said Massey. Whitworth after all did advance to the national tournament and returns an outstanding line-up which includes the 2001 NWC Player of the Year," Massey said. "The upper two-thirds of the conference is going to be really tough. The younger teams are a year older and more experienced. Whitworth and Puget Sound are the most experienced, so to speak. It should be a great run for the title," concluded Coach Massey.
