The trio combined for 111 kills, 77 digs, and 17 blocks in three SoCon matches.

2 Players of the Week Offensive Player of the Week Chandler Ambrester Furman Furman s Chandler Ambrester was named the SoCon Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week for October 8, the league office announced Monday. Ambrester, a senior outside hitter, was named Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Paladins to a 3-0 week in conference play. The Pine Mountain, Ga. native recorded 44 kills and only 10 errors to average 4.40 kills per set last week (.330 attack percentage). She recorded double-digit kills in all three matches for the Paladins last week, including a 15 kill/18 dig performance in Furman s 3-1 win at College of Charleston, which snapped the Cougars 21-match home SoCon win streak. Ambrester leads Furman with 274 kills and 4.03 kills per set. Defensive Player of the Week Morgan Cochran Western Carolina Western Carolina s Morgan Cochran was named the SoCon Defensive Volleyball Player of the Week for October 8, the league office announced Monday. Cochran, a junior libero, recorded 58 digs in eight sets last week for the Catamounts. She led WCU with over 20 digs in every match last weekend, including matching her career-high of 35 digs against rival Appalachian State. The Lakeland, Fla. native averaged 7.67 digs per set and moved into sixth place in WCU history in career-digs with 1,277. WCU continues SoCon play this weekend as they travel to Furman and Wofford. The setter from Union Grove, Wis. recorded more than 40 assists in each of Furman s three games last week (133 total). Wilks totaled 50 assists and 10 digs in Furman s 3-1 win at College of Charleston on Sunday for her seventh double-double of the season. She averaged 13.3 assists per set last week and averages assists per set on the season, fourth in the NCAA. Furman returns to action this weekend as they host Western Carolina and Appalachian State. Hitting percentage by Furman s Caroline Adams last week as the Paladins went 3-0 in SoCon matches. Adams recorded 30 kills and only four errors in 10 sets. Ranking that Chattanooga s Paula Passmore holds in the NCAA digs/set 2 category. Passmore leads the SoCon with 6.25 digs per set. Ranking that Freshman of the Week Jo Wilks holds in the NCAA assists/ 4 set category. Wilks leads the SoCon with assists per set. Total blocks Georgia Southern s Crysten Curry, Western Carolina s Addy Georg, and Appalachian State s Dalton Tolliver last week. Assists per set average of Samford last week. The Bulldogs recorded 101 assists in seven sets last week and are 6-0 in SoCon play. Total blocks by Georgia Southern and Western Carolina last week. 10 Releases Davis, Deatsch, Betlach Earn Volleyball Honors Georgia Southern s Kate Van Dyke Named Student-Athlete of the Week College of Charleston s Taeler Davis, Elon s Ali Deatsch, and UNCG s Lauren Betlach have been named the SoCon Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Volleyball Players of the Week, respectively, for October 1. The selections are made by the conference office. Davis, a junior setter, was named Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Cougars to a 3-0 week in conference play. The Phelan, Calif. native averaged nearly 12 assists per set for CofC, as they swept The Citadel, Georgia Southern, and Davidson last week. Davis amassed 107 assists, 18 digs, eight total blocks, five kills and one service ace in three matches. Deatsch, a senior libero, recorded a total of 52 digs in seven sets last week for the Phoenix to average 7.43 digs per set. In the team s sweep of Western Carolina, Deatsch finished with 23 digs to average 7.66 digs per set. Against Appalachian State, the senior tallied 29 digs for 7.25 digs per set. The Elmhurst, Ill., native also finished the week with seven assists. UNCG s Lauren Betlach was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week, her first such honor of the season. The outside hitter from Phoenix, Ariz. averaged 3.43 kills and 2.57 digs per set over the weekend. Betlach tallied her second double-double of the season at Western Carolina with a team-high 11 kills and a career-high 16 digs. She also posted 13 kills at Appalachian State as one of four Spartans in double figures. The Shawnee, Kan. native holds a 3.75 GPA in Psychology and has helped the the Eagles to a 2-0 start in league play for the third time in the five-year tenure of head coach Chad Callihan. Van Dyke averaged assists per set in a pair of SoCon wins for the Eagles. She also registered 16 digs, four kills and three blocks last week. Hutchinson, a senior middle blocker, was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after leading the Bulldogs in kills and hitting percentage last week. The Kennesaw, Ga. native recorded 24 kills with one error in two matches for a.639 hitting percentage. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Georgia Southern setter Kate Van Dyke has been named one of 30 volleyball candidates for the Senior Class Award, it was announced yesterday. The 2012 candidate class includes 16 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans from last season. Twenty-four of the 30 candidates have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and one was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a 2011 Capital One Academic All-American. A three-year All-Southern Conference selection and Most Outstanding Player at the 2010 SoCon Tournament, Van Dyke already owns the Georgia Southern record in career assists with 4,578. She ranks 34th in the country and second in the SoCon in assists this season, averaging per set. Van Dyke has been named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll all three years and has earned Academic All-SoCon accolades twice. She has played in 113 career matches and logged 1,080 digs, 172 blocks, 398 kills and 93 service aces. From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award in October, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. Hutchinson, a senior middle blocker, recorded 39 kills, 11 total blocks, five digs, one assists and one service ace during a week that saw the Bulldogs go 3-1. The Kennesaw, Ga. native set a school record for single-match hitting percentage against Alcorn State on Friday, with 12 kills on 14 attempts and no errors for a percentage of.857. Shelton, a senior libero, recorded 73 digs (5.62 per set), 12 assists and one service ace against Georgetown, Presbyterian and Michigan State last week. The Cincinnati, Ohio native recorded 21 digs against both Georgetown and Michigan State. She also leads the team in digs every match and ranks second in the conference in digs per set. Georgia Southern s Alexandra Beecher was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week, her first such honor of the season. Beecher was named to the SpringHill Suites Eagle Invitational All-Tournament team last weekend. She averaged 5.06 digs per set (81 total) and added 10 services aces (with just two errors) and 12 assists in a 3-1 week for the Eagles. She hit.500 with 25 kills, three service aces, and 17 digs in Furman s 3-1 win over Clemson on Tuesday. It was the Paladins first win over the Tigers in Greenville in the history of the series. During the Best Western Bent Creek Inn Invitational in Missoula, Mont., the Lincoln, Neb. native recorded 21 kills and 16 digs in Furman s 3-1 win over Montana, 19 kills and 14 digs in Furman s 3-2 loss to Texas Tech, and had 15 kills and 12 digs in the 3-1 loss to Towson. She was also named to the All-Tournament team. Braun recorded a double-double in every match last week and has seven double-doubles for the season. She leads the Paladins with 171 kills (3.98 per set) and 18 service aces (0.42 per set). Bauer, a senior defensive specialist, averaged 5.23 digs per set (68 total digs) in a 4-0 week for the Bulldogs. She tallied double-digit digs in every match, including a 20-dig performance against Georgia State on Friday. She also added 11 assists and eight service aces in Samford s four matches. Furman s Jo Wilks was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week for the third straight week. Wilks led the team in assists in all four matches, tallying 217 assists (12.7 assists per set). The setter from Union Grove, Wisc., recorded a double-double with 61 assists and 13 digs in Furman s 3-1 win over ACC-power Clemson on Tuesday and helped extend Furman s home winning streak to 17 matches. She also tallied seven kills (no errors), three blocks and 31 digs last week for the Paladins. Wilks leads Furman with assists per set for the season. 13 Furman s Christina Dorismond Named Student-Athlete of the Week Christina Dorismond, a junior middle blocker on the Furman volleyball team, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for September 5, the league office announced today. The Cary, N.C., native holds a 3.98 GPA in Chemistry. Dorismond was named tournament MVP at the Willie Jewell s Invitational after leading Furman to a 4-0 record at the tournament. She hit.562 with 10 kills in Furman s 3-0 win over host Charleston Southern, and hit.529 with 11 kills in the Paladins 3-0 win versus Canisius. Dorismond currently boasts a.339 attack percentage on the season (72 kills) and is second on the team in blocks with 19, including 7 solo blocks. Other nominees included Appalachian State football player Troy Sanders, The Citadel football player Carson Smith, and Davidson cross country runner Presley Parkes. Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week Sept. 5: Christina Dorismond, Volleyball, Furman Releases Harris, Beecher, Wilks Earn Volleyball Honors Elon s Kris Harris, Georgia Southern s Alexandra Beecher, and Furman s Jo Wilks have been named the SoCon Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Volleyball Players of the Week, respectively, for September 4. The selections are made by the conference office. Harris, a sophomore middle blocker, led Elon offensively last week with 40 kills, averaging 3.33 kills per set and hitting.395. In Elon s matches against North Carolina A&T and Gardner-Webb, Harris was the only player to record double-digit kills with 11 and 12, respectively. Against North Carolina Central, the sophomore tallied 11 kills off 15 attempts with only one error to hit.667. The Apex, N.C., native also finished the week with seven blocks and one ace. Harris was named to the Elon Phoenix Classic All-Tournament Team. Beecher, a freshman defensive specialist, averaged 5.36 digs per set in a 2-1 week for the Eagles. In Georgia Southern s 3-1 loss to Auburn Friday night she posted 22 digs, and added 18 and 19 digs in the Eagles wins over Jacksonville State and High Point, respectively. Beecher also tallied eight assists last week for Georgia Southern. Furman s Jo Wilks was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week for the second straight week. Wilks led the team in assists in all four matches last week, helping the Paladins to a perfect 4-0 week. 14 Releases Dorton, Passmore, Wilks Earn Volleyball Honors Southern Conference Volleyball Preseason Honors Announced College of Charleston s Darcy Dorton, Chattanooga s Paula Passmore, and Furman s Jo Wilks have been named the SoCon Offensive, Defensive and Freshman Volleyball Players of the Week for August 27, respectively. The selections are made by the conference office. Dorton, a junior outside hitter, led the team in kills (58) during the Cougars 2-1 run through the Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational. The transfer from Penn State registered double-doubles in kills and digs in CofC s first two matches over the weekend. She also finished second on the team in digs for the tournament with 36. Dorton was also named to the Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational All-Tournament team. Passmore, a senior libero/defensive specialist, helped the Mocs start 3-0 for the first time since Passmore recorded 77 digs through 10 sets over the weekend for Chattanooga. Her 41 digs against USC Upstate on Saturday was a single-match best for the senior, breaking her old record of 38 against Elon on Oct. 30, She was also named to the Country Inns & Suites All-Tournament team Furman s Jo Wilks posted strong numbers in her first weekend as a Paladin to garner freshman of the week honors. It is the third time in the last four seasons that Samford has been tabbed as the preseason North favorite and fourth time in the last five seasons that College of Charleston has been picked first in the South. The Bulldogs, 2011 SoCon tournament champions, received 10 first-place votes for 65 total points and were picked to finish first in the North Division. College of Charleston, who fell to Samford in the 2011 SoCon tournament, received 59 total points (six first-place votes) and was selected to finish first in the South Division. Appalachian State received two first-place votes (48 points) and was picked to finish second in the North, followed by Elon (41 points) who was last season s preseason favorite. UNCG was voted to finish fourth in the North (38 points), with Chattanooga and Western Carolina tying for fifth-place (27 points). Furman received three-first place votes (57 points) and was picked to finish second in the South, followed by last season s preseason South favorite, Georgia Southern (three first-place votes; 52 points). The South Division was rounded out by Davidson, picked to finish fourth (36 points), Wofford (26 points) and The Citadel (16 points). The coaches also voted on the 2012 Preseason All-Conference Team. Samford led all schools with three selections, including the 2011 SoCon Player of the Year Elizabeth Neisler. She was joined by her teammates Laruen Hutchinson (2011 First Team All-Conference) and Katie Murphy (2011 Second Team All- Conference). Furman was second in selections with two, as 2011 Second Team All- Conference selections Natalie Braun and Caroline Adams were chosen. The 2011 Freshman of the Year Sloane White was the lone selection from College of Charleston, while Kate Van Dyke (Georgia Southern) nabbed her secondstraight preseason all-conference honor. Davidson s Caroline Brown, a 2011 Second Team All-Conference selection, rounded out the 2012 Preseason All- Conference Team.
