3 COACHING STAFF JUSTIN SPRING HEAD COACH // FOURTH SEASON Justin Spring enters his fourth season at the helm and seventh season overall with the Illinois men s gymnastics program. Spring was named National Coach of the Year after leading the Illini to their 10th NCAA title and first since 1989, becoming the youngest coach to garner the accolade in NCAA history at age 28. He also notched his third straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honor after guiding Illinois to its fourth straight Big Ten crown. Under his leadership, the 2012 Illini knocked off top-ranked Oklahoma three times throughout the season, compiling a 28-2 mark overall, and produced two NCAA event champions, 11 All-America accolades among seven individuals, three Big Ten titles between two gymnasts, two All-Big Ten honorees and their fourth-ever Nissen-Emery Award winner, senior Paul Ruggeri. Additionally, freshman C.J. Maestas earned Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year. In , Spring guided the Illini to a 28-5 overall record, their third straight Big Ten title and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Spring s 2011 squad featured four NCAA All-Americans and two NCAA champions. After a successful 2011 campaign, he was named Central Region Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Following the season, Spring was named head coach for the Illinois men s gymnastics program after spending one year as an associate head coach. In one season as associate head coach, Spring led Illinois to its second straight Big Ten team title and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Individually, five Illini earned All-America accolades; three took home Big Ten titles, and Luke Stannard became just the third Illini to win the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented annually to the nation s top senior male gymnast. Additionally, Spring helped guide Illinois to a 22-5 overall record and the top spot in the rankings on four separate occasions and never dropped out of the top five. For his efforts, Spring was honored as both Central Region Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year. Spring was promoted to associate head coach following the 2009 season after three years as an assistant under the legendary Yoshi Hayasaki. The promotion meant that Spring had to retire from competitive gymnastics to concentrate on coaching full time. In 2009, Spring was named Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year along with Ivan Ivankov after helping Illinois to the Big Ten Championship, a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and three individual NCAA titles. Spring, a former Illini standout, had an amazing year in 2008 that culminated with winning a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Along with his teammates, Spring defied all odds as the U.S. men brought home the bronze medal and surprised everyone, except themselves. Spring was spectacular in the team finals in leading the Americans to the improbable bronze. He scored on vault in the second rotation, a team-leading on parallel bars, a spectacular on horizontal bar, along with on floor exercise in the three-up, three-count format. Spring s road to the Olympics was not an easy one to say the least. Plagued by injuries throughout his career, Spring battled through constant pain in hopes of accomplishing his lifelong dream of bringing home an Olympic medal. Less than a year before his Olympic appearance, Spring tore his ACL at the 2007 Visa Championships. However, he did not let the incident hamper his dreams. After making a speedy recovery, the Burke, Va., native headed to the 2008 Olympic Trials, where he was scheduled to compete on only four events due to a nagging ankle injury. However, he knew he needed to do more in order to make the team. He needed to show the Olympic selection committee that he had the complete package they were looking for. With his dream on the line, Spring rolled the dice and made a last minute decision to add floor exercise to his competition events. Despite not practicing on the event in nearly two months, the gutsy move paid off as he posted a score of , the second highest score of the night. After a second strong day of competition at the Olympic Trials, all Spring could do was wait. The Olympic team would be announced the next day. In the end, the decision to add floor proved to have a huge payoff, as Spring s name was one of the six announced to the team. Spring, one of the most talented gymnasts in Illinois history, finished his collegiate career in In his first season as an assistant in 2007, Spring was instrumental in helping the Illini return to the NCAA Championships Super Six, as the Illini extended their streak of top-five finishes to five straight years with fifth-place finishes at NCAAs and Big Tens. In 2008, Spring helped lead the Illini to a runner-up finish behind No. 1 Penn State at the Big Ten Championships. At the 2008 NCAA Championships, the Illini continued their success, finishing third, their sixth consecutive top-five finish. The Illini brought home nine All-America honors with freshman Paul Ruggeri winning the national title on high bar, Illinois first high bar champion since Spring in Finishing his collegiate career in 2006, Spring strung together one of the best seasons in Illinois gymnastics history. The season culminated with him earning the 2006 Nissen-Emery Award, an honor that goes to the top senior male gymnast in the nation. A double titlist at the 2006 NCAAs, Spring took home the crown on the high bar and defended his title on parallel bars. In addition, he carded five total All- America honors with a second-place finish in the all-around, third on floor exercise and fourth on vault. Along with his individual honors, Spring helped the Illini to runner-up finishes at the 2006 NCAA and Big Ten Championships. The finish at NCAAs came less than a half-a-point shy of team-champion Oklahoma, and just short of the Orange and Blue s 10th national title. Overall, the Burke, Va., native is a four-time NCAA Champion, winning a pair of titles on high bar in both 2004 and 2006 and back-to-back crowns on parallel bars in 2005 and Along with his national recognition, Spring earned 2006 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year accolades after winning the all-around crown at Big Ten Championships. In all, Spring finished his illustrious career with three All-Big Ten first team honors, six Big Ten Gymnast of the Week laurels and three Inside Gymnastics NCAA Gymnast of the Week honors ILLINOIS MEN S GYMNASTICS // 3

7 THE FIGHTING ILLINI 2013 SEASON PREVIEW Phillips rounds out the list of returning All-Americans after a solid year during which he advanced to the high bar final at Big Tens and NCAAs and competed regularly on parallel bars and high bar. The other returning scorers from the 2012 NCAA Championships include 2013 senior captain Vince Smurro, who scored on floor, Josh Wilson and Alex Varga on vault, Cole Smith on pommel horse, Mike Wilner on rings and Cameron Rogers on parallel bars. The Illini also boast a list of skilled newcomers, including 2011 junior national parallel bars and rings champion Max Mayr, two-time junior national team member Joey Peters, former Georgia vault and floor state champion Fred Hartville and 2011 Junior Olympic National Championship pommel horse bronze medalist Logan Bradley. They, along with redshirt freshman Jacob Tilsley, who spent 2012 on the sidelines due to injury, will look to make an immediate impact for the Orange and Blue. Seniors (L-R): Austin Phillips, Vince Smurro, Malcolm Brown, Yoshi Mori The reigning national champion Fighting Illini men s gymnastics team will open the season ranked first in the country as the squad begins its quest to defend its NCAA title and secure its fifth straight Big Ten crown. Head coach Justin Spring returns for his fourth season at the helm after garnering National Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career and Big Ten Coach of the Year recognition for the third consecutive season. He and his assistants, 2012 National and Central Region Assistant Coaches of the Year Ivan Ivankov and Daniel Ribeiro, will look to guide the Orange and Blue to another historic season. This year is going to be unique in that, beginning in March, the format will change to a five-up, five-count system, Spring said. I think we have the potential to step up in that format, rise to the occasion at Big Tens and the NCAA Championships and make another run at a very good season. Our team is not going to be throwing up the highest start values at every meet, but we will make sure to be the most consistent team all year. That can go a long way in the postseason when the pressure is on. The Illini return four of seven All-Americans from last year s championship squad, including seniors Yoshi Mori (AA, PH) and Austin Phillips (HB) and juniors Chad Mason (PH) and Jordan Valdez (HB). The squad also will feature 10 of the 15 gymnasts who contributed countable scores during team finals at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Together, those 10 athletes were responsible for 15 of the 24 scores counted by the Orange and Blue. Senior Malcolm Brown, junior Andrew Margolis and sophomore Nick Sacramento will look to crack the lineups on various events throughout the season as well. Maestas, a three-time All-American and four-time U.S. senior national team member, will miss the 2013 season due to a tricep injury sustained during practice. In his first season at Illinois, the Corrales, N.M., native won the conference all-around crown to earn Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year honors before capturing the NCAA title on rings, securing a runner-up finish in the all-around at NCAAs and earning All-America status on rings, pommel horse and in the all-around Illini Event Breakdown Floor Exercise Although the Orange and Blue said goodbye to two-time Big Ten floor champion Paul Ruggeri along with C.J. Padera, who contributed one of Illinois four countable scores during NCAA Team Finals last season, the Illini return two of their four floor scorers from the 2012 NCAA championship team, including Smurro and Mori. Fellow floor veteran Varga will look to be a major contributor as well. Wilson, Rogers and newcomer Hartville will compete for spots in the lineup and look to solidify the floor squad. Pommel Horse Three of the four gymnasts who contributed to the Illini s all-time highest pommel horse score return for another season after helping Illinois overcome a two-point deficit going into the final two rotations during NCAA Team Finals to win the 2012 crown. All-Americans Mori and Mason will look Mori will look to be a major contributor throughout The pommel horse and all-around All-American competed in the pommel horse final at both Big Tens and NCAAs and was consistent throughout team finals at the NCAA Championships, turning in countable scores on all five apparatuses on which he competed. Valdez, an All-American on high bar and one of two 2013 team captains, has been a solid performer throughout his Illini career, contributing regularly on high bar, parallel bars and vault. The Louisville, Colo., native advanced to the high bar final at Big Tens and NCAAs, finishing third and fifth in those competitions. Mason returns after a breakout performance at the 2012 NCAA Championships, where he finished first on pommel horse during prelims and fourth during team finals. The 2012 All-American was instrumental in Illinois comeback during the team competition, leading the pommel horse squad to a school record-breaking performance that helped erase a more than two-point deficit to claim the national crown. 8 THE FIGHTING ILLINI to lead the charge along with fellow 2012 NCAA finalist Smith and Rogers. Pommel horse specialist Brown, incoming freshman and pommel ace Bradley and redshirt freshman Tilsley will look to contribute as well. Still Rings Without the return of Maestas, Wilner, who also contributed a countable score during NCAA Team finals, will look to step up to the challenge and fill the role of anchoring a fairly inexperienced rings squad after the Illini bid farewell to three-time rings All-American Anthony Sacramento and Kyle Moe, a consistent 15.0 performer. With three major holes in the lineup, Rogers, Phillips, Margolis and newcomers Mayr and Peters will look rise to the occasion and return the Illini to rings success. Vault The Illini lost 2012 NCAA vault champion Ruggeri, who also is a two-time All-American and Big Ten champion on this apparatus. Despite the loss of a world-class vaulter and Maestas, the squad returns everyone else who competed on vault at NCAAs and will welcome incoming vault star Fred Hartville, who will look to make a dramatic impact as anchor on this event in his first year with the Orange and Blue. The lineup will also feature veterans Mori and Varga and could include Tilsley, Rogers and Wilson. Parallel Bars Despite losing Ruggeri, a former NCAA champion and two-time All- American on this event, and Padera, a one-time Big Ten champion and All-American, Illinois boasts talent on parallel bars, led by veterans Phillips and Mori. Additionally, Valdez made significant upgrades to his routine from last season, and Peters and Mayr look to shine in their first year with the Illini. High Bar The Illini took the biggest hit on high bar this season with the loss of Ruggeri, the 2011 Pan American Games high bar champion, 2009 U.S. high bar champion, two-time NCAA high bar champion and two-time high bar All-American. Ruggeri boasts the all-time highest score at Illinois on this apparatus and ranks second in all-time high bar titles. Despite his accolades, Ruggeri fell on this event during NCAA Team Finals last season, posting an uncounted score for the Illini. Maestas, another solid high bar performer, fell during NCAA Team Finals as well and did not contribute to the team score. Returning All-Americans Valdez and Phillips, fellow NCAA scorer Mori and newcomer Peters will look to compensate for the loss of two talented high bar stars. Schedule Freshmen L-R: Jacob Tilsley, Joey Peters, Logan Bradley, Fred Hartville, Max Mayr The Illini will debut their skills at their Orange & Blue Exhibition on Dec. 9 at Huff Hall alongside the women s team. The defending national champs will kick off the regular season with a dual meet on Jan. 12 at UIC and will return to Chicago the following weekend (Jan. 19) for the annual Windy City Invitational, where they placed second out of six last season. The Orange and Blue will continue with invitational-style competition on Jan. 25 at the Metroplex Challenge in Dallas. After a nearly two-week hiatus, select Illini will return to action to compete for U.S. national titles and spots on the senior national team at the U.S. Winter Cup Challenge, Feb. 7-9 in Las Vegas. The Orange and Blue will open their home slate with a dual meet against Iowa, welcoming the Hawkeyes to Huff Hall on Feb. 16 for Gym Jam, which will be held in conjunction with the women s squad and will feature special promotions and events. The next weekend (Feb. 23), the Illini will travel to Ohio State to face the Buckeyes before taking a two-week break in the schedule. The Illini will host Penn State on March 2. The following weekend, Illinois will welcome Minnesota for a special match-play event, which will be an NCAA-sanctioned competition, aired on Big Ten Network and is the brainchild of Spring and Ribeiro. We re trying to create a fan-friendly, media-friendly gymnastics competition format that allows you to follow the progression of the competition, Spring said. In order to do that, we re kind of getting rid of the athletes competing against the judges and making it more about the athletes competing against the athletes of other teams, like most sporting events. It s a head-to-head format, where both teams are on the same event. There is strategy involved, and it really brings out the traditional American sporting elements that we ve come to love from football, basketball and baseball and brings them into the gymnastics world. I think people are really going to like it. The Illini travel to California the next weekend (March 16) before returning home on March 23 for Senior Day against Nebraska. Illinois will look to notch its fifth straight conference crown at the Big Ten Championships, April 5-6 in Minneapolis. Less than two weeks later, the Illini will travel to State College, Pa., where they will look to defend their national title at the NCAA Championships, which will take place April on Penn State s campus. 17 2012 SEASON REVIEW 2012 SEASON REVIEW The 2012 Fighting Illini strung together an unforgettable season, highlighted by their first NCAA team title since 1989 and the first national championship for any Illinois program since The Orange and Blue also took home their fourth straight Big Ten crown and knocked off the top-ranked team in the nation three times throughout the season en route to a 28-2 overall mark. The squad produced two NCAA event champions, 11 All-America honors, three Big Ten individual titles, two All-Big Ten selections, the Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year and its fourth-ever Nissen-Emery Award winner. Head coach Justin Spring was named National Coach of the Year after notching his third straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honor. Illinois opened the season ranked second in the nation behind 2011 runner-up Oklahoma and was picked to finish first in the Big Ten. After finishing second at the Windy City Invitational behind conference foe Ohio State, the then-no. 4 Illini bounced back with a road win over Iowa. The following weekend, ranked second once again, they knocked off No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 7 Michigan in a showdown at Huff Hall. Less than a week later, the still No. 2-ranked Illini sent six gymnasts -- Paul Ruggeri, Anthony Sacramento, Tyler Mizoguchi, Austin Phillips, C.J. Maestas and Michael Wilner -- along with volunteer assistant coach David Sender to compete at the U.S. Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas for the chance to secure a spot on the 15-man senior national team. There, Maestas finished third on rings, while Ruggeri placed second on floor, both earning spots on the national team. After a nearly three-year hiatus, Sender took second on vault and third on rings to earn a place as well. The team got back in action the next weekend with a decisive 10-point victory over in-state rival UIC. Despite the win, the Orange and Blue fell to No. 3 in the national rankings, which are based on scores rather than victories. After slipping in the rankings, the squad also slipped in its following meet, coming up just short at No. 2 Penn State. Two weeks later, No. 3 Illinois returned home and got back on track with a seniornight victory over No. 5 Ohio State at Gym Jam 2012, hosted alongside the women s team. After the win, the Illini never looked back, defeating Minnesota and Nebraska in a tri-meet before downing Iowa once again, this time without Ruggeri, to close out the regular season. Meanwhile, Ruggeri brought home high bar silver for the U.S. at the 2012 World Cup in Cottbus, Germany. After a nearly three-week-long break, the fourth-ranked Illini traveled to Iowa for the third time in 2012 to compete for their fourth straight Big Ten title. The Orange and Blue extended their reign atop the conference and became the first team to four-peat at the Big Ten Championships since Minnesota accomplished the feat from In addition to capturing Illinois 27th conference title in program history, the most for any Big Ten school, Maestas won the all-around, becoming the first Illini to take the crown since Wes Haagensen in Nine Illini advanced to individual event finals, including seniors Ruggeri (FX, VT, PB), Sacramento (SR), Kyle Moe (SR) and C.J. Padera (HB), junior Yoshi Mori (PH) and Phillips (HB), sophomore Jordan Valdez (HB) and freshmen Maestas (FX, SR, PB, HB) and Mike Wilner (SR). The following night at event finals, Ruggeri won on floor and broke the Illini vault scoring record to bring home two titles, marking his fifth and sixth conference crowns all-time. Meanwhile, Maestas finished runner-up on floor, rings and high bar and earned Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year honors, becoming Illinois first Gymnast of the Year since Haagensen in 2007 and first Freshman of the Year since Mori in With their stellar performances, both Ruggeri and Maestas garnered first-team All-Big Ten recognition. After a week off, the Illini traveled to Norman, Okla., for the NCAA Championships. On the eve of competition, Ruggeri became the fourth Illinois gymnast to win the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award at the College Gymnastics Association/NCAA Championships Banquet. The award, which is presented each year, recognizes the top senior male gymnast in the nation. Additionally, assistant coaches Daniel Ribeiro and Ivan Ivankov garnered Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors Team Results 1/14 at Windy City Invitational 2nd of 6, /21 at Iowa W, /28 vs. Michigan/Oklahoma 1st of 3, /11 vs. UIC W, /18 at Penn State L, /2 vs. Ohio State W, /11 at Nebraska w/ Minnesota 1st of 3, /17 at Iowa W, /6 at Big Ten Championships 1st of 7, /19 at NCAA Championships (Team Qualifying) 1st of 6, /20 at NCAA Championships (Team Finals) 1st of 6, The Illini were ranked fourth heading into day one of the championships and competed in the evening preliminary session along with host and top-ranked Oklahoma, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 8 California, No. 9 Temple and No. 12 Air Force. The Orange and Blue came out on top, followed by Oklahoma and California. The three teams joined Session I qualifiers No. 6 Michigan, No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 Stanford in the team final the following night, marking Illinois 10th straight year in the Super Six. During team finals, the Illini clawed their way back from a two-point deficit in the final two rotations of the night to win the 2012 NCAA Championships with a season-high , including a school record-breaking on pommel horse, to edge host and top-ranked Oklahoma ( ), which finished second in the field of six. The win marked Illinois 10th NCAA team title in program history and first since Nine Illini qualified for individual event finals, led by Maestas on pommel horse, rings and parallel bars. Ruggeri advanced on vault and parallel bars, while Chad Mason, Cole Smith and Mori advanced on pommel horse, Sacramento on rings and Padera and Phillips on high bar. Less than 24 hours after helping the Illini to their first national title in more than two decades, Maestas became Illinois first-ever NCAA still rings champion, while Ruggeri matched his career high on vault to earn his fourth NCAA individual crown and career first on vault in his final performance for the Orange and Blue. Ruggeri also finished third on parallel bars and Maestas sixth on pommel horse to each earn All-America honors on those events. Five other Illini finished in the top eight on their respective events to earn All- America honors, including Mori (fifth; PH), Phillips (eighth; HB), Valdez (fifth; HB), Mason (eighth; PH) and Sacramento (eighth; SR). Overall, Illinois totaled 11 All- America honors, nine during event finals and two in the all-around (Maestas and Mori) during team finals. The Illini celebrated the season at their annual awards banquet, where Maestas was named Most Valuable and Ruggeri Most Outstanding. Three-time All-American Maestas and nine-time All-American Ruggeri led the team with 20 titles apiece. Ruggeri ended his career ranked third all-time at Illinois with 75 titles. Smith was selected as Most Improved after shattering his career high on pommel horse by seven tenths of a point with a to help the Illini win the NCAA team title and earn his first career All-America honor. Padera earned the Yoshi Hayasaki Consistency Award after spending the year in the national top-20 individual event rankings and was ranked 20th on both high bar and parallel bars going into the NCAA Championships. Junior Vince Smurro, 2012 high bar All-American Jordan Valdez and freshman Josh Wilson were voted team captains for the 2013 season. Sophomore Alex Varga garnered the team s Scholar-Athlete Award, while Mori took home the Fighting Illini Attitude Award. A few weeks later, Maestas earned yet another honor, garnering Fighting Illini Newcomer of the Year recognition, which is given to the top male and female freshman athletes at Illinois ILLINOIS MEN S GYMNASTICS // 17
