2 2007 WOMEN'S WATER POLO OUTLOOK Senior Elsie Windes is a three-time All- American and a member of the USA National Team. GOLDEN BEARS LOOKING FOR NCAA BERTH IN 2007 The world of collegiate women s water polo better watch out because here comes the 2007 Golden Bears. The California women s water polo program has plenty of reason to be optimistic. Ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll, Cal features the former United States men s Olympic coach Richard Corso, USA National Team player Elsie Windes, and a freshman class considered the nation s best. Mix in a steady core of returnees and the Bears have more than a solid chance of qualifying for the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Los Alamitos. Our goal is to win the national championship, and we are getting closer and closer to being able to realize that goal, said Corso, who guided Team USA at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The bench mark is our training. We are training like a national team and our players are embracing it. Fitness, technique and tactics are three things that are going to help us make it to the NCAAs. The Bears have just one senior, but that lone senior is one of the nation s best players Elsie Windes. A three-time All-American, Windes has led Cal in scoring each of the past two years and has tallied 124 goals. She will lead the Bears from her two-meter defender position, but is also an outstanding offensive threat. Mixing in with her collegiate play, Windes will be training with the USA National Team, including competing in the prestigious 2007 FINA World Championships, Mar in Melbourne, Australia. Other top returning players for Cal include junior two-meter Vanessa Lindsey, junior driver Molly Hayes and sophomore two-meter defender Melissa Wheeler. Lindsey, who is key in the Bears front court offense, was third on the team in scoring Junior Molly Hayes was MVP of the 20-Under Nationals this past summer. last season with 21 goals, including a team-leading six goals during the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. Hayes, whose twin brother, Mike, was a member of 2006 national champion Cal men s water polo team, scored 17 goals last season and is one of the Bears leading offensive players. This past summer she was a USWP first-team All-American and the MVP of the 20-under Nationals. The 6-0 Wheeler was a key to Cal s defense as a true freshman, and is a member of the USA Junior National Team. Another force for Cal will be 6-3 junior goalie Heather Stuart, who according to Corso has developed into one of the better college goalies in the country. Also a member of the Junior National Team, Stuart became the Bears starting goalie last season and finished with 167 saves in 26 matches, including 23 saves during the MPSF Tournament. She will be backed up by sophomore Lauren Burke, who notched 28 saves as a freshman. Additional returning athletes in the contention for playing time include 5-11 lefthander Julie Oreglia, 5-6 driver Remy Champion, 5-11 sophomore Paige Lorenz and 5-9 junior Katya Eadington. Oreglia and Champion are redshirt freshmen with a lot of skills Oreglia is the only left-hander on the team and can contribute as both a Junior Vanessa Lindsey was third on the team in scoring with 21 goals in California Golden Bears Women s Water Polo Media Guide

3 The Golden Bears trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado in January. Top row (L-R) Remy Champion, Melissa Wheeler, Stephanie Schnugg, Molly Hayes, Paige Lorenz, Elsie Windes, Heather Stuart, Katya Eadington, Julie Oreglia, Bailey Samuels, Lauren Burke. Front row (L-R) Camille Hewko, Grace Reynolds, Meghan Corso, Meredith Butte, Darby Anderson, Erin Scully, Sara Henry, Vanessa Lindsey. driver and two-meter defender, while Champion has performed well in early season competition and is a talented scorer. Lorenz provides depth as a two-meter defender and Eadington is a steady player who tallied 11 goals last season. Unfortunately for the Bears, they will not have the services this year of Stephanie Schnugg, a member of the 2006 MPSF All- Team, who will be redshirting this season to recover from an injured back. Rarely in college sports can a freshman class have an opportunity to make such a huge splash, but such is the case with this year s Cal s women s water polo squad. Corso welcomes in young standouts Darby Anderson from Santa Margarita High School, Meghan Corso from Agoura High School, Camille Hewko from Corona del Mar High School, Grace Reynolds from Tustin High School and Erin Scully from Los Alamitos High School. The 5-11 Anderson and the 5-10 Reynolds are both twometer standouts on the USA Junior National Team. Corso, a 5-9 driver, is the daughter of Richard Corso and was the 2006 CIF Co-Player of the Year. Hewko, a 5-10 driver, was the 2006 CIF Division III Player of the Year, and the 5-6 Scully was the 2006 Sunset League Player of the Year. But high school accolades aside, the Bears freshmen immediately give Cal an added dimension with their talent and depth. Our freshmen this year come into the program at a much higher level, explained Corso. We are able to treat them not like freshmen, but like veterans. Their experience is that significant. Not only do they bring an intensity to practice, the water polo IQ of the team has gone way up. It allows us to do so much more at practice. Rounding out the squad is newcomers Bailey Samuels, Meredith Butte, Erika Hanson and Elizabeth Layton. Samuels is a 5-6 sophomore driver who transferred from UCLA, Butte is a 5-7 freshman driver from Harvard-Westlake High School, Hanson is a 5-11 redshirt freshman driver from Tustin High School and Layton is a freshman goalie from Newport Harbor High School. It all comes down to qualifying for the NCAA Championships at the MPSF Tournament, said Corso. If you make it to the NCAAs then it is a whole new season. I am confident with our training we will be in a position to do well. They are going to be getting after it. Sophomore Melissa Wheeler is a USA Junior National Team member. Junior goalie Heather Stuart recorded 167 saves for the Golden Bears last season California Golden Bears Women s Water Polo Media Guide 3

4 CAL COACHING STAFF RICHARD CORSO Head Coach Second Year One of the most highly respected and successful water polo coaches in the world is now a member of the Golden Bear family. Richard Corso, who has served as head coach for both the United States Men s Olympic Team and the Canadian Men s National Team, was selected in August 2005 to be the mentor for the University of California women s water polo program. Corso not only offers a superior knowledge of the sport of water polo, he possesses a competitive attitude that is sure to get the most out of his studentathletes. The opportunity to coach at the world s premier public university, and to work with student-athletes that are ranked in the top 10 of all Division I schools is an Olympic coach s dream, said Corso. Cal s teams foster a special culture that values academics and athletic success. In his first season directing the Bears, Corso had the 2006 Cal squad knocking on the NCAA Tournament door as his team finished 18-9 overall and a school-record 9-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation league play. Cal was also an impressive 8-1 at home, losing only to No. 1- ranked USC, 7-5. The Bears were fifth in the MPSF Tournament, defeating Pacific (21-4) in the opening round, falling to Hawaii (10-8) in the quarterfinals, defeating San Diego State (7-5) in the semifinals and topping Arizona State (7-6) for fifth place. One of water polo s most innovative thinkers in terms of training and match tactics, Corso s creed is defensive, attacking water polo. He served as the United States Men s Olympic Team head coach from 1992 to 1996, leading the United States to a seventh-place finish at the 1996 games in Atlanta and a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. The 1996 Olympic team included current Cal men s coach Kirk Everist, plus other former Bear standouts Gavin Arroyo, Troy Barnhart, Chris Humbert and Chris Oeding. Prior to assuming his role with Team USA, Corso served as head coach of the Canadian National Team, which finished fourth at the 1991 Pan American Games. He also gained international experience as the head coach of the USA National Junior Team (1984 to 1988), and as goalkeeper coach for the 1984 silver medal-winning and 2004 Olympic teams. Most recently, Corso had served as head of the Harvard-Westlake School Aquatic Program in Los Angeles from 1986 through In that role, he was responsible for virtually all aspects of the nation s premier high school squad. Since 1986, Harvard- Westlake water polo teams had combined to win 40 league championships, two CIF titles and seven CIF silver medals. Additionally, 82 Harvard-Westlake student-athletes were named to All-America squads. Corso was named CIF Coach of the Year four times and California Coach of the Year in He also served as Harvard- Westlake s Associate Director of Admissions. We are ecstatic to have attracted an individual of Rich s talent and accomplishments, said Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour. He has a tremendous record of success at the highest levels of the sport. He also truly understands our mission at Cal. I am confident that our women s water polo program will now take its place among our menu of successful intercollegiate athletic programs. Corso began his head coaching career at Yale, where he led a club-varsity squad, and had previous coaching stops at UCLA, where he was assistant men s swimming and water polo coach. During his 10 years at UCLA, Corso helped the men s swim team to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1981 and an NCAA title in 1982, and an NCAA runner-up finish in men s water polo in Taking over as the United States National Team coach following the 1992 Olympics, Corso inherited a squad that had lost eight of 13 members. He brought a new level of collaboration with the United States Olympic Committee to the sport, and emphasized the importance of sport science, sports psychology and computer-video tape analysis that was demonstrated to all of the USA water polo coaches. Corso led his 1996 Olympic team to within one goal of the medal round in Atlanta, losing to goldmedalist Spain. His energy, preparation, commitment and professionalism will have a lasting influence on American water polo for years to come. A native of Queens, New York, Corso swam and played water polo at Southern Connecticut University, earning a bachelor s degree in physical education in He then completed his master s in kinesiology at Cal State Northridge in 1982, and earned a second master s degree in coaching science from Moscow State University in Corso and his wife, Catherine, have two children, daughters Meredith and Meghan, a standout freshman on the 2007 Cal women s water polo team. Head coach Richard Corso provides Cal with a world-class coach who directed the United States men s water polo team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics California Golden Bears Women s Water Polo Media Guide
