TRAVEL BY CAR TO EASTMAN / ROCHESTER FROM TONTO Dear Fellow York People coming from Toronto and others coming from points WEST of I-90! I would like to make the driving directions as easy as possible for you, but keep in mind there are some key factors to consider as you plan your route. FIRST, from Buffalo to Rochester is a snow belt. The weather can sometimes be quite different and challenging between Buffalo and Rochester in contrast to that between Toronto and Buffalo. Different weather systems intersect here, and manifest variously on either side of Buffalo. Check the weather channel for Rochester, Toronto and Buffalo before leaving on your journey so you know what to expect based on the hour you re leaving. ESSENTIALS: SUGGEST THAT YOU Bring your passport and some US Cash. It is expensive to draw money from the US ATMs with a Canadian bank card (usually Canadian banks charge us $3.00) per withdrawal in addition to the 1.75 of the ATM. TRIP TRAVEL TIME -- by CAR: First, Google Maps will tell you the trip time is about 3.5 hours. Yes, sure, it can be 3.5 hours if you leave at 5am, or after 8pm from Toronto (avoiding rush hour). However, at other times, ensure to budget for hours. My ADVICE: give yourselves about 5 hours if you are travelling during rush hour so you do not have to worry. Hint: If you leave before 1:30 pm on Friday you will almost avoid rush hour. If it is already 2:30pm before you arrive in Mississauga on the QEW, count on spending 30min extra on the QEW before you get to Niagara Falls. BELOW IS A QUICK GUIDE AND A THICK DESCRIPTION. I THINK THE QUICK GUIDE IS USEFUL F THOSE OF YOU KNOW THE ROUTE AND WANT A REMINDER OF. THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION WILL GUIDE YOU HERE SAFELY WITHOUT TROUBLE! QUICK GUIDE TONTO TO ROCHESTER - TAKE QEW TO NIAGARA FALLS EXIT LEFT TO NIAGARA FALLS 420 (bridge to USA) LEADS TO RAINBOW BRIDGE - DRIVE ACROSS BRIDGE AND GO THROUGH CUSTOMS AFTER CUSTOMS, - TAKE FIRST RIGHT TOWARD ROBERT MOSES PARKWAY SOUTH TO INTERSTATE I AT END OF ROBERT MOSES PARKWAY, CAREFUL (!) AND SLOW DOWN
- TAKE LEFT UNDER TINY OVERPASS AND GET IMMEDIATELY IN RIGHT LANE (JUST AFTER TINY OVERPASS) TO ONRAMP UP TO BRIDGE I-190 SOUTH -TOLL BOOTH $1.00 USD AT BOTTOM OF BRIDGE. - FOLLOW I-190 SOUTH TO EXIT 16 - EXIT RIGHT AT EXIT #16 I-290 EAST TO TONAWANDA / ROCHESTER - STAY ON I-290 EAST. IT CURVES ROUND (IT S A RING ROAD) F 20 MINUTES - EXIT LEFT TO I-90 TOWARD ALBANY (JUST BEFE BUFFALO INTERNATIONAL AIRPT) - EXIT RAMP BECOMES ONRAMP, ROAD TAKES LONG CURVE ROUND TO THE LEFT - TOLL BOOTH (PICK UP TOLL CARD, DON T PAY ANYTHING NOTE: THIS IS EXIT #49, AND THEY COUNT DOWN FROM HERE ) STAY ON I-90 EAST UNTIL EXIT #47 (ABOUT 45 MINUTES) IF YOUR PLAN F ACCOMMODATION IS TO STAY A 20 MINUTE DRIVE AWAY, BUT IN A RELATIVELY ME AFFDABLE PLACE, at Super 8 or Red Roof Inn, then KEEP GOING ON I-90 and AFTER ANOTHER 15 MINUTES EXIT #46 (INTERSTATE I-390) NTH TO ROCHESTER Here, if you go SOUTH you ll reach CNING (*YES, this is where the corning factory is!) - EXIT RIGHT #46 TO I-390 NTH - FROM I-390 NTH, EXIT RIGHT TO LEHIGH ROAD. - TURN LEFT AT LIGHT (FROM EXIT RAMP ONTO LEHIGH) - GO UNDERPASS TO SUPER 8 (ON THE RIGHT) - KEEP GOING PAST SUPER 8 TO THE RED ROOF INN BEHIND THE TIM HTONS AT THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT! IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC RIGHT AWAY, IF YOU WANT TO STAY AT ONE OF THE ACCOMODATIONS WITHIN WAKING DISTANCE OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEN. - EXIT RIGHT AT EXIT #47 (LEROY / ROCHESTER) - PAY TOLL AT EXIT ($2.00 USD) - TAKE I-490 EAST ALL THE WAY TO ROCHESTER (15 MINUTES) - EXIT LEFT TO INNER LOOP DOWNTOWN / PLYMOUTH - SLOW DOWN GO UNDER UNDERPASS; careful! STAY LEFT (INNER LOOP) - EXIT (right side) SCIO STREET RIGHT (after Clinton street exit) - TURN RIGHT AT SCIO (FROM EXIT RAMP) - YOU LL REACH MAIN STREET (FIRST TRAFFIC LIGHT) - CROSS MAIN STREET (SEE HUGE PARKING STRUCTURE ON RIGHT) - EITHER TURN LEFT (FROM SCIO) INTO PARKING STRUCTURE IF YOU WANT TO PARK AND WALK TO THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC
(SEE YOUR MAP) SEEK ACCOMODATIONS ON EAST AVENUE BY DOING THE FOLLOWING: - KEEP GOING STRAIGHT ON SCIO UNTIL YOU REACH EAST AVENUE (ONE ME TRAFFIC LIGHT, AT END OF THE PARKING STRUCTURE) YOU CAN EITHER 1. TURN RIGHT ON EAST AVENUE TO GO TO STRATHALLEN HOTEL (REASONABLE AND RECOMMENDED BY SOME) 2. GO STRAIGHT F THE INN ON BROADWAY HOTEL (UPSCALE) 3. GO TO THE EAST AVENUE INN AT ALEXANDER STREET AND EAST AVENUE (THREE TRAFFIC LIGHTS AWAY) THICK DESCRIPTION TRAVELING SIGNS AND SEMIPHES OK, here goes. This is the thick description of the route. For those of you who appreciate detailed instructions, this is the inside track. Take the QEW toward Niagara Falls Follow Signs to Hamilton and Niagara Falls, stay to the LEFT after Oakville and Burlington. There are two huge bridges you will be going over. The first is the Burlington Skyway, lovely view. The second is the Welland Canal look to your right and be amazed at the feat of engineering, kilometers of locks for ships to travel from one Great Lake to the next. Worthy of an ethnography, I d say. YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS: Rainbow Bridge or Fort Erie (Peace Bridge). Best Option for going over the border without any delay is the Rainbow Bridge. This is a wonderful sight to see (the Canadian Falls will be visible to your right again, as you go over the bridge) 1. From QEW, EXIT LEFT TO Niagara Falls HWY 420 (EXIT LEFT) 2. Speed limit changes to 80, then to 60km/hour, so be mindful of this. 3. First traffic light is Stanley Street. If you need Tim Horton s coffee, gasoline, or a rest stop, turn LEFT here on Stanley. It s only 200 meters to the Tim Horton s and Gas Station. Once finished
4. Proceed on 420 following little signs that say BRIDGE TO USA 5. The Road YOU ARE ON narrows to two lanes, curves down and to the right through a Stone-enforced embankment, under a bridge, and opens onto the Falls and duty free customs area. 6. Slow down and look for the wide roadway to the LEFT and the Rainbow Bridge itself. Follow BRIDGE TO USA. 7. Slow down more. On the Rainbow Bridge itself, the speed is km, so an exaggerated slow speed is acceptable. Look to your right as the Falls (possibly frozen) are visible. 8. At end of bridge, get in line behind cars going to a Green lighted Open booth. 9. Stop, then proceed. Flash! Smile! 10. Have your passport ready to give the officer. Be honest about whatever they ask you. They all know the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music. You re going to a conference On Music At Eastman Coming home in two days. 11. OK, Congratulations, you re through! Welcome! 12. Go straight, but mindful of the crosswalk and vehicles in the cordoned off area of US Customs where there are sometimes pedestrians in uniform. 13. Follow signs to the ROBERT MOSES PARKWAY TO I-190 SOUTH. 14. Take the ROBERT MOSES PARKWAY. Speed limit is 55 mph. It goes parallel to the Erie Canal. Gorgeous. Lots of birds in the springtime and fall. 15. End of ROBERT MOSES PARKWAY is TRICKIEST PART on this journey. The PARKWAY ENDS AT THE BRIDGE WHICH IS I-190 SOUTH (the big bridge in front of you that goes over the Erie Canal). That is where you have to be in 30 seconds. As you approach it, you need to stay in your left lane, and when the road forks, veer left, go under the little bridge, and immediately stay right and enter up onto the ON-RAMP TO GET ON THE BRIDGE and go I-190 SOUTH. WHEW! Well done! 16. OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE is a $1.00 Toll (USD). They give receipts. 17. CONTINUE I-190 SOUTH to Exit 16 (to I-290 / I-90) 18. EXIT RIGHT at Exit 16 to I-290 to TONAWANDA / ROCHESTER You are on I-290 (after 20 minutes, but before the Buffalo International Airport) 19. The INTERSTATE SPLITS, I-90-ALBANY (STAY LEFT) -- I-90 to ERIE (STAY RIGHT) GO LEFT - Head Towards Albany.
20. Another toll booth ENTERING I-90 but you are just picking up a card for later when you exit. NOTE: THIS IS EXIT #49, AND THEY COUNT DOWN FROM HERE ) STAY ON I-90 EAST UNTIL EXIT #47 (ABOUT 45 MINUTES ) 21. Decision time: EXIT #47 #46 EXIT #46 (KEEP GOING) IF YOU WANT TO STAY A 20 MINUTE DRIVE AWAY FROM EASTMAN, BUT IN A RELATIVELY LESS EXPENSIVE SPOT, at Super 8 or Red Roof Inn, then DO NOT EXIT AT #47, AND KEEP GOING and EXIT #46 (INTERSTATE I-390) NTH TO ROCHESTER if you go SOUTH you ll reach CNING (*YES, this is where the corning factory is!) - EXIT RIGHT #46 TO I-390 NTH - FROM I-390 NTH, EXIT RIGHT TO LEHIGH ROAD (pronounced Lee-High ). - TURN LEFT AT LIGHT (FROM EXIT RAMP ONTO LEHIGH) - WHEN GOING UNDER I-390 YOU WILL SEE THE SUPER 8 (ON THE RIGHT), - AND IF YOU KEEP GOING PAST SUPER 8 TO THE RED ROOF INN BEHIND THE TIM HTONS AT THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT! ALTERNATIVELY EXIT #47 IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC RIGHT AWAY, IF YOU WANT TO STAY AT ONE OF THE PLAEES WITHIN WAKING DISTANCE OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEN. - EXIT RIGHT AT EXIT #47 (LEROY / ROCHESTER) - PAY TOLL AT EXIT $2.00 USD - TAKE I-490 EAST ALL THE WAY TO ROCHESTER (15 MINUTES) - EXIT LEFT TO INNER LOOP DOWNTOWN / PLYMOUTH - SLOW DOWN GO UNDER UNDERPASS; careful! STAY LEFT (INNER LOOP) - EXIT (right side) SCIO STREET RIGHT (after Clinton street exit) - TURN RIGHT AT SCIO (FROM EXIT RAMP) - YOU LL REACH MAIN STREET (at the FIRST TRAFFIC LIGHT) - CROSS MAIN STREET (SEE HUGE PARKING STRUCTURE ON RIGHT) - EITHER TURN LEFT (FROM SCIO) INTO PARKING STRUCTURE IF YOU WANT TO PARK AND WALK TO THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC (SEE YOUR MAP) SEEK ACCOMODATIONS ON EAST AVENUE BY DOING THE FOLLOWING: - KEEP GOING STRAIGHT ON SCIO UNTIL YOU REACH EAST AVENUE (ONE ME TRAFFIC LIGHT, AT END OF THE PARKING STRUCTURE) YOU CAN EITHER
1. TURN RIGHT ON EAST AVENUE TO GO TO STRATHALLEN HOTEL (REASONABLE AND RECOMMENDED BY SOME) 2. GO STRAIGHT F THE INN ON BROADWAY HOTEL (UPSCALE) 3.
