6 Head s up! Spring is in the air and the turtles are on the roads! From May to September it s common to see turtles near roadways, hanging around on the sandy shoulders or trying to cross to the other side. All kinds of turtles will be roaming around, looking for mates and for places to lay their eggs. Keep an eye out for these turtle crossing signs around the rez, and when you see them, watch out! Kitigan Zibi Whip-poor-will Project Head s up! The KZ Species At Risk (SARA) crew will be conducting Roadside Listening Surveys at night, in the area from June 25 to 29, 2018.

Eastern whip-poor-wills are small nocturnal birds that feed on flying insects. They chant their loud, namesake whip-poor-will song continuously on spring and summer evenings.

The Natural Resource and Wildlife Department is listening for whip-poor-will calls to get a better idea of their population size and location.

You may sometimes see members of the SARA crew driving around secondary roads at night. Rest assured that we will always stay on the road, and off of private property.

Whip-poor-wills are a Species At Risk in Canada. Studies show that populations have been reduced by more than 30% over the last 10 years (i.e. 3 whip-poor -will generations).

If you hear a whip-poor-will calling at night, please let us know!

The KZ Species At Risk (SARA) crew will be conducting Roadside Listening Surveys at night, in the area from June 25 to 29, We ll be driving around after dark, stopping once every kilometer along our listening routes to look for whip-poor-wills. What is a whip-poor-will? Eastern whip-poor-wills are small nocturnal birds that feed on flying insects. They chant their loud, namesake whip-poor-will song continuously on spring and summer evenings. What are Roadside Listening Surveys? The Natural Resource and Wildlife Department is listening for whip-poor-will calls to get a better idea of their population size and location. Unlike most birds, whip-poor-wills call most often at night when the moon is out. Since they re so good at hiding during the day, night time is the best time to look for them. You may sometimes see members of the SARA crew driving around secondary roads at night. Rest assured that we will always stay on the road, and off of private property. We only listen for the birds, and don t interact with them or their habitat in any way. What can I do to help? Why are they being studied? Whip-poor-wills are a Species At Risk in Canada. Studies show that populations have been reduced by more than 30% over the last 10 years (i.e. 3 whip-poor -will generations). In order to help stop this decline and possibly reverse it, we need to learn more about where the whip-poor-wills are, how many there are, and what state their habitat is in. If you hear a whip-poor-will calling at night, please let us know! Give us a call at the Kitigan Zibi Natural Resource and Wildlife Department with your name, location, and approximately where you heard the bird. This will help us plan new routes to expand our project and possibly find more whip-poor-wills. You can also call us if you find anything noteworthy, i.e. dead whip-poor-wills or other animals, or if you d just like to learn more about the whip-poor-will project and Species at Risk. 24 Indigenous Knowledge: What does it Offer Human Beings? In June, in honour of National Aboriginal History Month, Indigenous peoples, and the stated goal of reconciliation, the Biblio Wakefield Library in Quebec will showcase the work of Indigenous authors. A highlight of the month-long event is a public teaching / talk by Dr. Lynn Gehl, Algonquin Anishinaabe.
