1 KIAMA JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB GRADING COACHES DIARY 2013 This Coaching Diary, while not compulsory, is primarily aimed as an aid to all our coaching staff who wish to keep a record of training and matchday progess. It is hoped that some aspects of this Diary and its pages can come in useful during the course of the season, while generally improving performances for the coach and player alike. Good Luck For The Season!
2 DUTY OF CARE Code of Conduct Your Rights As a coach, you are a delegate of the club and therefore must abide by the club s constitution and rules. All incidents which may occure during a game and could be reported to Football South Coast via the Junior Association, may need to be followed up. Any complaint made during a game must be lodged in the Incident Report Book held in the Club House directly after the game in which the incident has taken place. Before lodging your complaint, make sure you have all the facts (not hearsay) and talk it over with your manager. Avoid confrontation with parents, rather, seek out a ground marshall and explain the situation to the duty officer in charge. Hopefully, commonsense will prevail. A Football NSW ruling in 2013 now stipulates that all junior coaching staff should hold at least the Grassroots Training Certificate. The Kiama club will hold a Grassroots Certificate Course in early March. New coaching staff, or staff not qualified, are requested to attend this course which is free and held in The Quarry grounds. Dates and times will published on the website. Football NSW Coaches Code: For a full version of the Code, please go to Football NSW website. Get to know your players: Prior to the start of the season, at your first training session, ask your players if any suffer from long-term illness or injury. Keep a record of these players. A typical long-term problem is Asthma. Make sure these players have their puffers on the sideline with you at all games. This should be discussed at training nights prior to the weekend s game. Football NSW are changing its policy towards wearing glasses all the time. The latest is soft rimmed spectacles (sports glasses), but at the time of writing I believe this is also about to change. Check with the club for this ruling for Contact lenses are preferred but many children refuse to wear them. Muscular Support under-apparel, such as skins, can be worn, but must be the same colour as the playing strips shorts. All support garments should be in the club colours. Remember to check for all jewellery prior to team registration line-up. Remind players of this at training. There is a no tolorence policy on jewellery, visible items cannot be simply taped-up as of It is important for coaches and or managers to phone through your away results to the club s Results Co-ordinator. These results can be text through or phoned through to Dianna Brain on before 4pm on Sunday. Please do not send in your pink away slips with another coach, as these results can be overlooked. Contacting Dianna on the above number is a requirement. The Club is fined if results are not posted into the association on time.

25 BASIC FIRST AID What You Can and Cannot Do Nowadays, it is advised to call immediately for professional help in case of a bad injury on the field. DO NOT try to administer any form of first aid if you are not qualified. High Risk/Serious injury Do not put yourself in a position that you feel uncomfortable with and is beyond your knowledge. Seek assistance after diagnoses immediately. Never move an injured player with a head injury. Never move an injured player with any suspected broken limbs. Call upon the Ground Marshall on duty at the time to get help. Low Risk injury Classified low risk injuries include; sprains and bruises, natural knocks during the course of a game. Ice is available from the kiosk for these injuries. For cuts, where the blood fl ow can be stopped, a first-aid kit is available in the kiosk. Serious cuts, apply preasure to the area with clean bandage and seek immediate help. Points of note: Do not allow parents to rush onto the field when they see their siblings injured. As a coach, do not leave the outlined technical area, rather, send your team manager or a willing parent close at hand to go and get the ice or band-aids as required. Once the referee has given permission to enter the field of play for an injured player remember to take with you water, ice (if available) and a listening ear to the complaint. Do not rush. Try to understand the situation at hand. Help the player off the field of play, calm the situation and make sure the player is ok. It has been my experience in the past that the most common injury that coaches will confront during the course of a season are the bruises from impact, twists and sprains due to the nature of the game, and breathing difficulties in hot weather. Water and ice are the two most easily accessible immediate remidies for these problems. But in saying this, all coaches should be prepared for whatever comes their way whilst in charge of their players. And always seek help if you are not sure of the situation.
26 THE FINAL SAY The Diary, Training Plan and Matchday Requirements. Wether you are a first time coach or a seasoned campaigner well in advance of what this diary has to offer in your life with your team, the idea is to bring everyone together on a same level playing field. Hopefully some of the contents of the Diary will be useful for your matchdays as well as your training nights. As Development Officer, one of my duties is to ensure all our grading coaching staff are happy with their lot! Comfortable in approaching me and comfortable for me to approach the committee on their behalf. Please do not hesitate to contact me: peacockpub@hotmail.com or home for all your enquiries. The Diary has been set up for your use as you see fit. Always photocopy additional pages when required. Also feel free to use the Training Plan and Team Sheet Layouts accordingly as you need them and to adopt your own style of play accordingly. We should not be too strict on team formation, rather, choose the formation that suits your playing staff at hand and what they feel comfortable with and obviously play to the teams strengths. I know that FFA wish all our junior teams to play a formation, but this cannot be possible all the time with the playing squad coaches have at their disposal. So it is wrong of FFA to push this onto Grassroots level coaching staff, when, in my opinion, they do not help grassroots clubs at all in this department of development is the main game played throughout Europe and the English Premier League for obvious reasons... players as young as 12 cover an equal amount of turf on the playing field (if played correctly). The Matchday Sheet is very useful and a copy, once filled in, should be carried in your strip bag permanently. It s just one less thing to think about on matchday, and don t forget to phone through your results when away from home to the Results Co-ordinator. The club gets fined if results are missing.these results can be text through or phoned through to Dianna Brain on before 4pm on Sunday. I sincerely wish you all well in the ensuing season and hope you enjoy, learn, and respect your players around you. As children, they will remember these days long after we (as coaches) have moved on. It is a serious part of their education of life. How they respect others, how they participate in games and how they learn while enjoying their chosen sport. But at the end of the day it finally comes down to you as their mentor and coach on the meaning of camaraderie within a team environment. Yours in Sport, and Best Wishes for the season. Compiled by Chris Hudson (Grading Coordinator & Development Officer 2013)
