Good Afternoon everyone The FA Trophy often throws up some long journeys right from the start but today s match is fairly local as we welcome everyone associated with Westfield FC to Short Lane for this afternoon s Preliminary Round tie. The structure of the competition is such that it is by no means easy to get to the point where the top National League sides come in and in any case many of them do not seem to give the competition much priority. We have already played one match in the competition having had to overcome Heybridge Swifts in the Extra-Preliminary Round fairly convincingly, whereas Westfield received a bye and thus, this will be their first ever match in the competition. If the scores are level after 90 minutes there will be a replay at Westfield on Tuesday evening, which would mean the postponement of our scheduled Middlesex Senior Cup match away to Hanworth Villa, which incidentally is a 7.30 p.m. kick-off. We have met Westfield on numerous occasions in the past when we were both in the CCL, on 29 times to be precise (plus one friendly, which we lost 5-8!). Matches were generally well contested and back in the 90 s, Westfield were one of the few CCL sides to beat us on a fairly regular basis. There wasn t usually too much in it, our best win in goal scoring terms being the 4-0 win at Westfield in 1999, on the Saturday before Christmas, our scorers being Andy Frost, Tony Nolan (pen), Anthony Eggington and Des Vertannes. In the last league season that we met though, in the season, Westfield achieved the double. Following promotion to Step 4 at the end of last season, our opponents, who romped to the CCL championship last season, made a hesitant start to life in the Bostik League but now seem to have found their feet to the point where we sit level on points although we have a match in hand. We will be seeing a lot of Westfield over this current period as they are back with us next Saturday but this time in the League, so if it was a draw today, we would be meeting three times in seven days! Enough has now been said about the refereeing last Saturday at Hayes & Yeading and we now have to put it behind us. Despite the video making a mockery of the decision to dismiss Brannon Daly, leaving us with no option other than to put Mark Bitmead in goals, thus depriving us of our main strike force, we have decided not to appeal as, frankly, it s very difficult to win such them. Fortunately we have been able to sign a very capable deputy as you will see. Enjoy the match and see you at Hanworth on Tuesday (or Westfield, of course!).. 3

Westfield FC Westfield Football Club was formed in 1953 as Westfield Boys Club, playing in the Woking and District League and also running a youth team. The 1950s From the start the Club had success in the competitions it entered. Among the trophies won in the early years were the Surrey Youth Invitation Cup in 1953/54, the Surrey Junior Charity Cup in 1954/55 and 1955/56, the Surrey Junior Cup (at the first attempt) in 1955/56 and the Surrey Youth Cup in 1956/57. Following several seasons in local league football, the Club made the break into Surrey Intermediate football using the present ground at Woking Park, Kingfield. Successes soon came and, after becoming League Champions and Cup winners on several occasions in the subsequent seasons, the Club decided to apply for senior status. The application was accepted in 1964 and after one season in the Parthenon League, Westfield met the necessary ground grading requirements and joined the Surrey Senior League. The 1960s Westfield s future success in senior football sprang from their ability to attract the best local youngsters, and they were successful in winning the Surrey Youth Cup again in 1966/67 and 1969/70, and the Surrey Youth Shield in 1969/70 and 1970/71. This talent matured and there followed three tremendous seasons for the senior side, when they won the Surrey Senior League Cup in 1971/72, followed by the League and Cup double in 1972/73, and the League Championship again in 1973/74. The 1970s and 1980s The Surrey Senior League was disbanded and reformed as the Combined Counties Football League in 1978, and Westfield FC became founder members and have retained membership to date. Success, however, has been more difficult to achieve and in recent times the closest the senior team has come to honours was in 1989/90, when they lost the final of the Combined Counties League Cup to Hartley Wintney in extra time In recent seasons with former Woking player, John Cassidy as manager, the senior side improved their league position, finishing sixth in season 2000/01. That season saw the Club enter the Carlsberg FA Vase for the first time, performing beyond expectations before losing in the Fourth Round to Ryman League Arlesey Town, on the way beating Wantage Town, Lewes and Bowers United.. 6

Season 2002/03 saw Westfield enter the FA Cup for the first time, losing at home to Dorking in the Preliminary Round. Westfield continued to compete at youth level and they won the Combined Counties Youth League Cup in 1991/92, as well as being runners-up in the League. Following the installation of floodlights in 1998, the U18 team joined the Southern Youth Floodlight League as members of the Western Division. The Club also run an U16 team playing in the West Surrey Boys League. This is currently the Club s most successful side, last season competing at U15 level the team won the League Championship, the League Cup and the Surrey County Cup Following the end of the 2003/04 season, Westfield lost both First and Reserve Team managers. John Cassidy moved to Frimley Green, and thereafter back to Farnham Town, and Graham Pope moved to Godalming & Guildford to manage their reserve team in the Suburban league. Westfield recruited Paul Donaghy from Guildford-based Merrow as firstteam manager, and Dave Robson long-time Westfield player took over the reserves. At the end of 2005/06 Westfield were relegated to the 1st Division, due to new groundgrading regulations after a very acrimonious conflict with the league. Numerous commitments from league officials were reneged upon, and after months of appeals and meetings, Westfield had to accept their unwelcome fate. After a mid-table Division 1 season and partly because of the league-enforced relegation, Manager Paul Donaghy decided to resign as First Team manager to join Godalming and Reserve Team manager Dave Robson also quit. The team of ex-player Martin Powell, ex- Spurs stalwart David Howells and coach John Comer took over the running of the senior teams for the start of the 2007/08 season In the close season of 2007/08, following a highly credible 4th place finish, Martin resigned as manager due to personal circumstances; his departure signalled the exits of both David Howells and John Comer. In July 2008 the position of 1st Team Manager was filled by Steve Plunkett, the ex-godalming Town Reserves boss, though hw was replaced within 4 months by the returning Dave Robson, as the club attempted to rebuild following a mass exodus of players. Dave Robson did a fine job stabilizing the club, but after an indifferent 2009/10 was replaced by joint managers, Craig Moore and John Comer. Off the pitch there was good news, as building of the new facilities commenced in 2010/11 and it promised to be a good season as the management duo assembled the best squad since the 2008 season. However, despite some wonderful results, the team struggled to find consistency, and finished a disappointing +44 (0) th in the table. There or info@firstchoicebus.com was better news for the reserves who finished 4th in the reserve league, and reached the final of the league cup, where they went down to double-winning side Mole Valley SCR.. 7

During the summer of 2011, Craig Moore decided to step down to concentrate on playing, leaving John Comer as sole manager. He promoted Kevin Bailey from the reserves to be his assistant, and following Dave Kelly s resignation as reserve team manager appointed David Robertson. In May 2011 the old pitch was dug up and raised a metre, before being re-seeded and in June the old clubhouse was demolished. The club moved into the new facilities in August 2011 with a thrilling opening match in the FA Cup against Peacehaven & Telscombe, in which the Sussex side eventually ran out 6-3 winners, in front of a crowd of 190. The following month a new record attendance for a league fixture at Woking Park was set when 325 witnessed the fixture against Guernsey. The season saw another improvement on the pitch, where a position of 8th was achieved and the team reached a cup final for the first time in nearly 20 years. However they went down 4-2 to Warlingham on the day. The following season the Club gained promotion in third place, and played Walton Casuals Reserves in the final of the Surrey Premier Cup, going down 2 goals to 1 in a close game. In season 2013/14, with John Comer continuing as manager, the Club had their best league finish since 1981, ending in fourth place. With John Comer s departure, Martin Beard was appointed for the season. After a run of indifferent results, Martin was replaced by Dan Snare, who improved the side to finish mid-table to date For the season, Tony Reid was appointed manager, and enjoyed a stunning season, finishing second in the League and winning the League Cup in May. The following season the Club continued to play exciting, attacking football, scoring an amazing 145 goals, whilst only conceding only 45, and became deserved Champions with a fantastic 106 league points. As the season begins, we say farewell to the Combined Counties League after 40 years of continuous competition, and start an exciting journey into Step 4 of non-league football. We wish Tony and his management team well for yet another tremendous season. Picture( Right) - Westfield FC - courtesy and Copyright Andy Fitzsimons at Woking News & Mail. 8

This week s NLP programme column below, written by David Richardson. For many of us today is no different to any other Saturday. The same pre-match rituals were had, the same pub visited and the same turnstyle entered. But today is also the eighth instalment of Non-League Day, an initiative setup by James Doe where Non-League clubs can showcase the lower-league game to supporters of Premier League and Championship clubs, in particular. The day is always scheduled within an international break to give these fans a chance to experience some Non- League action at a club local to them. Doe initially setup NLD as a social experiment in 2010 but now it is an eagerly anticipated date that football fans look out for when the fixtures are released. Its success has stemmed from the superb backing Non- League sides have given it as well as from the ones in the top-flight, and of course the new and old supporters! In a bid to increase attendances on the day, many clubs reduce ticket prices or put on offers for Football League or Premier League season ticket holders but also organise a host of extra activities for all ages. In 2014, a crowd of 2,856 watched Dulwich Hamlet take on Hampton & Richmond while the following year 761 fans saw the Step 5 London derby between Clapton and Ilford.. 14

Premier League and Championship clubs have supported the initiative by advertising local fixtures that their supporters can take in. It is believed the day has helped raised millions of pounds for the Non-League game and plenty for charity too. Prostate Cancer are once again NLD s official charity partner and we urge you to please support their campaign if possible. Kick It Out, who have been lobbying for equality in football for 25 years, have partnered with NLD for a seventh time. Seven teams will be dedicating their fixtures to football s equality and inclusion organisation Worksop Town, Southport, Tamworth, Sporting Khalsa, Edgware Town, Kensington Borough and Burgess Hill Town have chosen to recognise Kick It Out s work by organising extra activities throughout the day to encourage engagement with a diverse range of communities. So, please embrace NLD and show off everything that we love about Non-League football. For the newcomers: welcome and thank you for supporting the day, your contributions will make all the difference to these clubs. We hope to see you again next year or sooner!. 15

Hayes & Yeading 7 Ashford Town 1 Following three successive wins, Ashford found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-7 scoreline at Hayes & Yeading on Saturday. The match hinged almost exclusively upon a refereeing decision a few minutes before half-time when the scoreline was at 0-0 and Ashford were playing well and very much in the game against a talented opposition. Hayes were attacking and just inside the penalty area when Samad Kazi was adjudged to have fouled his opponent. The video of the incident shows that the Hayes player conveniently fell over Kazi s outstretched leg but overall it wasn t one that justified too much argument and the penalty was confidently struck home past Brannon Daly. Then came the incident. Daly was clearly frustrated with the situation and with his head down, which is an important point, just kicked the ball back towards the centre circle. However, he did not lash it or deliberately aim it, as might have been imagined but unfortunately, it struck an opposition player who couldn t seem to decide which part of his body to rub most, eventually settling for his head, even though the ball seemed to have struck him on the thigh certainly no higher. Referee Green, who from the video, seemed to have his head turned away, at least to some extent, gave himself no thinking time and showed Daly a red card with absolutely lightning speed. He then saw an Ashford player being knocked to the ground which should surely have merited a similar punishment but he only gave a yellow. He wasn t finished as he next sprinted over to Ashford manager Ben Murray, who did not seem to have over reacted and showed him the red card again with almost indecent haste, before he even reached the bench, leaving Murray to be unceremoniously escorted from the ground by a couple of Hayes stewards. It just seemed that the referee couldn t wait to take the action he did and there had indeed been dark mutterings even before the game about a previous incident involving Ashford. To Ashford s supporters, it seemed a travesty with Daly s offence meriting no more than a yellow card at least, if that, but what followed was not the referee s fault. The Tangerines, now forced to put leading scorer Mark Bitmead in goal, with no replacement on the bench, fell to pieces, conceding another before the break and then a further four in the second period before the returning Tom Howard, finally brought on, pulled one back from outside the area. Hayes then had the last word making the final score

Ashford Town Middlesex Brief History Until recently, it was assumed that Ashford Town Football Club was formed in However, new research has indicated the club was formed in 1958 as Ashford Albion and first competed in the Hounslow & District League. Albion won two consecutive promotions to reach the Premier Division of the Hounslow League and were still competing at this level when the club changed its name to Ashford Town in It was at this time that the club adopted its distinctive Tangerine & White colours. The club endured a difficult first campaign as the Town club and withdrew from the Premier Division, assuming the Reserve Team's place in Division Two. Having rebuilt the club with a very young team, Ashford Town rapidly advanced through the various divisions of that League, absorbing Staines Youth Club FC. on the way. Several individuals from that era have remained with the Club and now form the backbone of the Committee, including the Vice-Chairman and Secretary. The Club were elected to the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) in 1967 and were promoted at the end of their first season. The Ash Trees were League Cup finalists in and League runners-up in In , Ashford enjoyed their best season under the managership of ex-fulham player Frank Reid, winning the League by three points from perennial contenders Merrow. Although the championship eluded the Club in following seasons, it usually finished in the top four and prior to season an invitation was extended by Surrey County FA. to become founder members of the Surrey County Premier League. The invitation was readily accepted and Ashford played their first match in the new league on 4 September 1982, drawing 0-0 away to Farleigh Rovers. Almost from its foundation, the Club had aspirations to acquire its own ground and after one or two disappointments, this was achieved in August 1985, when a long lease was signed with Spelthorne Borough Council, enabling the Club to move to its present home at Short Lane, Stanwell. From what was nothing more than a field, the facilities were quickly developed, with the first match at Short Lane taking place in February 1986, following two postponements for snow. The Club now possesses a modern clubhouse and bar, kitchen facilities and boardroom. Floodlights were erected in September 1995, whilst the pitch is railed all round and partly walled, with standing covered accommodation, plus a purpose built 150-seater stand, built in 1998 (pictured). An additional 100 seats were installed on the opposite side of the ground to this stand in 2006, after the club won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division. For both geographical and historical reasons, Ashford affiliate to both Middlesex and Surrey F.As and in , their last season as an Intermediate Club, they reached the final of both Counties Premier Cup competitions, beating Farnham Town in the Surrey version but losing to Willesden Hawkeye in the Middlesex. 24

Ashford Town Middlesex Brief History Continued 2 final. Runners-up spot in the League was also secured and with it the opportunity to enter senior football, as members of the Combined Counties League, senior status having been granted in May It was at this point that the club changed its name to Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC, to avoid confusion with the Kent club of the same name. During its ten year membership of the Combined Counties League, the Club never finished below sixth place, and after finishing 3rd and 2nd in seasons and 93-94, it went on to win the League Championship for four successive seasons. It was a relative disappointment to only come 4th in , even though the Club won the League Cup but a 5th championship in just six seasons was secured in 99-00, along with the Middlesex Charity Cup, the first ever senior county cup honour. With the ground up to the required standard, Ashford took their place in the Isthmian League for season and by finishing in 3rd place, secured promotion to Division 2 at the first attempt. The first season in Division Two did not the Club making sufficient progress and after a series of indifferent results, long serving manager Dave Kent left the Club on 28 March. His replacement was Nathan Wharf, an ex long serving player, who stepped up from Reserve Team management. Further major improvements were made to the ground to enable the Club to be granted a B-grade and to take its place in the newly regionalised Division One of the Ryman League. A poor start saw the Club in the bottom echelons of the table but a number of new signings saw a significant improvement and a 17 th place finish, which was an excellent performance after winning just one of the opening 16 league matches. Further progress was made in as the Club finished 12 th in Div 1 South. In the close season prior to , the pitch has been completely relaid to include both irrigation and drainage systems, at a cost of around 50,000, mostly financed by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. Further medium term plans include new changing accommodation adjacent to the pitch, which will allow enlargement of the present clubhouse, and a hard surface floodlit training area. The Club embarked upon new adventures in season in the Southern League for the first time, having been transferred over as a result of the FA Restructure. The 4 th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was reached for the first time and Mark Butler, renowned goal scorer in his day with Aldershot Town, Staines Town etc, was promoted from Assistant Manager to Manager following the resignation of Nathan Wharf in December The play-offs were reached but resulted in a narrow defeat at Evesham United after extra time. In , Ashford went one better, finishing second in Division One West of the Southern League, to secure promotion to Step 3. This brought about a return to the Isthmian League for season and saw Ashford competing at their highest ever level. The season brought consolidation with the added bonus. 25

Ashford Town Middlesex of reaching and winning the Westview (League) Cup Final when Ashford triumphed 4-1 over Dover Athletic at Bromley. The Reserves also lifted a trophy, securing the Middlesex Premier Cup. Ashford built on this success, rallying from the foot of the table in November 2007 to narrowly miss a place in the promotion play-offs at the end of the season, a campaign which saw all of the club's senior sides challenge for honours. The senior side reached the Final of the Southern Combination Cup, the Reserves reached the Finals of both the Middlesex Premier and Surrey Premier Cups, while the Under 18s, led by club stalwart, Mick Snowden were champions of the Southern Youth League. The season saw Ashford begin the campaign in electrifying form, winning their opening six matches to top the table. Mark Butler's side followed this up with a fantastic FA Cup run which saw them come agonisingly close to eliminating Forest Green Rovers in the Fourth Qualifying Round at Short Lane. Rovers won the replay and went on to run Derby County close in the Third Round. Ashford endured a difficult winter, which saw them flirt with relegation, before a late resurgence saw the side safely into mid-table. The cup competitions added much adventure to the season, as Ashford followed up their exploits in the FA Cup with runs to the semi-finals of both the Middlesex Senior and Isthmian League Cups and end their campaign by defeating Conference Premier outfit Woking 3-2 at Metropolitan Police to win the Surrey Senior Cup. The season saw Ashford make a reasonable start to the campaign, but the Ash Trees were shocked when manager Mark Butler tendered his resignation on Friday 23rd October, in order to take up the Manager's role at Margate FC, who were struggling at the foot of the table. Ashford appointed former Leicester City and Bradford City midfielder Jamie Lawrence as his replacement, and the Jamaican international immediately led his new charges on a twelvematch unbeaten run. However, issues off the pitch were causing problems for the club and a number of players, including leading goal scorer Byron Harrison left for Carshalton Athletic, where Mark Butler had accepted a coaching role after leaving Margate, where he had been in charge for just three months. Ashford found scoring a problem after Harrison left and a dreadful run of form saw them go from the fringe of the play-off zone to battling relegation. Ashford went into their final match knowing a win would almost guarantee survival, while a draw would see them finish fourth from bottom - technically a relegation place, but certain to receive a reprieve owing to the demise of various other clubs. Sadly, a heavy defeat for Ashford, coupled with wins for Carshalton and Margate saw the latter two clubs survive - Margate receiving the reprieve for finishing fourth from bottom. During the summer of 2010, the club were initially placed in the Central Division of the Southern League but were then offered the chance to remain at Step. 26

Ashford Town Middlesex Three of the non-league pyramid. However, as this offer was as a direct replacement for defunct Southern League side Merthyr Tydfil, the decision was made that the vast increase in travelling would be too great a burden for the club and the club elected to remain in the Central Division. During this time, Bob Parker stepped down from his role as Chairman after twenty-eight years in the role. The club's home ground was renamed the Robert Parker Stadium in honour of Bob, who remains at the club as President. The club entered a new era in the Central Division of the Southern League with Jamie Lawrence at the helm and with a mixture of established local players and new faces but the season was a challenging one. The club played some sparkling football at times and enjoyed an exciting run in the FA Trophy, reaching the Last 32 in the competition before losing at home to Dartford. However, League form was patchy and the club finished 16 th. One bright spark was the club winning the Southern Combination Cup, defeating Hanworth Villa 1-0 in the Final. Jamie Lawrence resigned as Manager in June 2011 and the club immediately appointed his assistant, Paul Burgess, to take the helm after more than 21 years at the club, including 683 First Team appearances. Despite having little time to do it and few resources at his disposal, "Burgo" assembled a young and exciting team. Although any hopes of a tilt at the promotion play-offs were dashed by a dreadful run where the club failed to win at home for four months, Ashford finished the season strongly, winning two Cup Finals in 48 hours. In the Middlesex Charity Cup Final, the Ash Trees were 3-0 down to Northwood after 48 minutes before substitute Kofi Lockhart-Adams scored four times to put his team ahead. the game finished 4-4, with Ashford winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2. Two days later, Ashford defeated Badshot Lea 3-1 to add the Aldershot Senior Cup to the cabinet, aided by a fine performance from Paul McCarthy, who had saved two penalties in the first Final. A memorable season was capped by the club being named winners of the Southern League Fair Play Award. In recent times Ashford now managed by Ben Murray and ably assisted by Mark Green have been renowned for playing attractive football firstly in the Combined Counties and after the team gained promotion in the Southern League. The return of the side into the Combined Counties was a result of being relegated in the season from the Southern League. That season despite a late run of good results after the team was invigorated by the appointment of Ben Murray the team just fell short in trying to stay up. In the 2014/15 season the team had a fantastic start to the campaign winning ten League games in succession after losing the first game at home to Cove. Despite that Ashford lost out to Molesey for the title and finished third as Camberley Town took second place. The exciting brand of football made Ashford very pleasing on the eye to watch but the doggedness of the Molesey side saw. 27

In the 2015/16 season Ashford again started the season excellently and were amongst the front runners but found the red hot form of the excellent Hartley Wintney too much to take the title but due to the Champions ground grading not being of step 4 standard Ashford took the promotion place on offer to the runners up. This was achieved on the last game of the season as rivals Camberley Town went down 3-2 at champions Hartley Wintney. Mark Bitmead scored an impressive 42 goals in the season with Dan Fleming scoring 25 goals. Back in the Southern League Ashford started brightly in the 2016/17 season occupying one of the play off places in October before a dip in form in the winter period cost Ashford and the team slid down to mid table. A strong ending to the season culminated in Ashford finishing in 9 th place. The side also won the Middlesex Senior Cup Final played at Hanwell Town by beating Conference South side Wealdstone by two goals to one. Alex Fisher and Dan Fleming were the scorers on the evening. Russell Canderton was outstanding on the evening making one miraculous clearance off the line. Samad Kazi caught the eye as the supporters player of the season. The current season saw Ashford win three rounds of the FA Cup before losing out to Leatherhead in the 3rd Qualifying Round. Unfortunately serious injuries to Joe Green and Mark Bitmead saw Ashford fall out the play off places again. Mark had started tremendously well in the season scoring 11 goals in the first 11 games. A poor run in the winter months saw Ashford hover in midtable but once again the side has returned to form and have currently have only lost one out of the last nine games. The return of Mitchal Gough has been instrumental in the recent good run. Alex Fisher, James Cottee, Max Webb & Jack Beadle have been impressive throughout the season. And so to the New Season, 208/2019 looks set to be one of Transition for the club, with the sad loss of our Chairman Dave Baker during the close season the position of Chairman has been split into a joint role between Alan Constable & Nick Bailey both of whom are keen to continue the development of the club and its ever-growing Tangerine brand, on the playing front there too have been some changes with a number of the previous incumbents moving on during the close season to a higher level within the Non-League Pyramid we wish them all the well and thank them for there efforts whilst in the Tangerine colours, and now allows for the next chapter to be written and some new faces to entertain the tangerine faithful.. 28
