PE Newsletter Summer 2016 U13 Boys Hockey National Finalists, finishing 6 th best in England!! It has been a great finish to the season for winter sports, with finals being made from sports including rugby, hockey and football. The students have performed superbly throughout, but special mention must go to the senior boys football, who were crowned County Cup winners and also in hockey, where the Y7/8 boys have been amazing all season. The summer is also looking bright with lots of different sports, competitions and events to look forward to. Away from sports teams, students are now building up for the amazing whole school event that is Sports Day on Friday 8 th July. We also have Western Primary School holding their sports day at HGS, with the help and support of our fantastic Student Sports Leaders. Although not exhaustive, this newsletter aims to provide a snap shot of all the great sporting achievements our students have made here at HGS. Andy Brown, Faculty Leader, PE & Sport. HGS U12 Netball tour to Condover hall

Athletics Athletics has got off to a great start this year, with huge participation and success across the school. Miss Haslop organized a track and field fixture against HLC, which took place on a Saturday morning. The girls from HGS represented the school brilliantly, showing great enthusiasm and attitude. The Y7 and Y8 teams both won on the day, with the Y9 team missing out by the narrowest of margins to deny making it a treble. However, this didn t make any difference to the outcome of HGS being victorious overall on the day. It was a great morning, and we hope to organize many more in the future. Thanks to Miss Haslop and Mr Wood for giving up their Saturdays. Many HGS students represented at the Harrogate & Craven Athletics Trials at Cleckheaton a few weeks ago and as a result many HGS students have been nominated to represent North Yorkshire. As a team event, HGS performed amazingly in the first round of the English Schools athletics at York University athletics track. The junior girls team qualified for the A final and are currently 2nd strongest in the North East division. Inter girls qualified for the B final by finishing joint 7th with Ripon. Both the junior and inter boys qualified for the B Final. This level of qualification is unprecedented in school history. The challenge for the junior girls is to get to a National Final! Cross Country - results from the recent North Yorkshire cross country race: Year 7 - Joseph Harris 6 th and selected to run for North Yorkshire, Rose Forest 2 nd and selected for North Yorkshire, Danika Atkinson 10 th and selected for North Yorkshire, Pebbles Myers finishing in 42 nd. Year 8 - Freya Sugarman 15 th (running against year 9s) Year 10 - Jacques Maurice 6 th and selected for North Yorkshire and the English Schools Championships (a year young as well!) 6th Form - Lucy Ireland 5 th, selected for North Yorkshire and the English Schools Championships. Millie Gray 6 th, selected for North Yorkshire and to run in the English Schools Championships (a year young as well!) Louis Maurice 13 th selected for North Yorkshire (a year young). Finally, PE staff have been overwhelmed by the attendance at the Wednesday after school athletics club!! Keep up the good work.

Y7 Netball Tour to Condover Hall Another very successful Netball trip to Condover Hall, Shrewsbury, with 27 Y7 girls attending this year. Organised by Miss Metcalfe, the girls experienced high ropes, the leap of faith, raft building, archery and lots of netball. Although we did not win the tournament the girls played hard and established themselves as the friendliest, most well- mannered and sociable group, voted by the JCA staff and opposition teachers! HGS A Team were excited to get the netball tournament underway on Saturday morning. Our first game just happened to be one of the hardest of the weekend, facing Bryn Celynnog. After a slow start and going a few goals down, the girls began to find some confidence scoring from our own centre pass and even managing to turn over and convert from Bryn s mistakes. Unfortunately, we left it too late and lost our first game 8-5. The girls accepted the defeat like true sportswomen and after a quick team talk about where we went wrong the girls picked themselves up and looked forward to the next few games. The A Team then remained unbeaten for the rest of the morning s pool games. Some fantastic Netball was played by all team members and every single player showed why they deserve their place in the team. The girl s hard work payed off as they qualified for the cup competition. The first stage of the cup competition was to take part in two pool games. HGS played a perfect first game against Longsands to keep a clean sheet and scored lots of goals. Confidence was running high going into the final pool game against Arthur Terry and early on HGS took the lead. Unfortunately, a few mistakes cost us and let Arthur Terrys back into the game. With the pressure mounting, with little time left, it was goal for goal, the girls narrowly missed out on progressing to the semi-final with the final score ending 9-7 to eventual tournament winners Arthur Terry. Over the weekend individual players not only made improvements to their game but also as a whole team they came on leaps and bounds. A fantastic squad of players with such enthusiasm and determination to play the best netball possible. Well done Ladies!! HGS Cougars had a fantastic time and improved with every match they played over the weekend. A team full of enthusiasm, spirit and determination, they were able to compete with some other school s A teams and did HGS proud. Some players took on the challenge of playing new and exciting positions, developing versatility throughout the squad. On day 1 the team won 1, drew 1 and lost 2, qualifying them for the plate competition on Sunday. Quote of day one went to Lucy Rees who said although we lost that last game, I learned a lot from the other team. This summed up the attitude of the girls; they celebrated what they had done well whilst taking on board the areas they would need to work on for the all-important plate competition. Following a close draw and an emphatic win it all came down to the final game versus Holyhead to see who would qualify for the plate final. Unfortunately, Holyhead took the win, but true to form the girls were pleased with how they had played and had nothing but positives to take from the experience. On the journey home it was time to congratulate the Cougars players of the tournament winners. Lucy Rees took the coaches player award for being versatile and effective in all areas of the court, she played centre, GA and GD and fought for every ball. Emily Burns and Elena Blair took the two player s player awards for their contribution to defence, stopping the opposition from making passes with impressive interceptions which prevented them from scoring. Well done to all the Cougars, they were a pleasure to coach and a delight to watch on court. SJH

A quick counter attacking move towards the end of the game saw Joe Dorkings and Christian King combine to put the finishing touches to a well worked goal, Christian King getting the final touch to make the final score 6-3. Congratulations to all who played in this game and to all who played throughout the season. Football The HGS Senior Football team were victorious in the U18 Yorkshire County Cup by beating Stokesley School 6-3, in a pulsating final held at York City's Bootham Crescent ground. HGS got off to a flying start with goals from Patrick Mayhew, Louis Maurice and a screamer from Joe Dorkings. With only a few moments left of the half a delicate chip over an advancing keeper by Joe Dorkings, after a sumptuous move, gave HGS a comfortable 4-0 half time lead. Just after half time with the score at 4-0, HGS made a triple substitution and as the boys settled into the new formation Stokesley suddenly pounced with two quick goals. Rob Worrall steadied the ship with a wonderfully finished tap in from a great move. Stokesley did not want to lie down and rallied again scoring with 15 minutes remaining to make it 5-3. The HGS defence was steadied after this and Stokesley never threatened again. After a highly successful season the U13 team are through to the final of the area cup. They are due to play against King James School the second week back after half term at Rossett School. Good luck to the boys!! Cricket The Y7 and Y8 teams have made winning starts to the cricket season in the cup competitions. The Y7 team beat Rossett comfortably at home. Rossett scored 72-8, while HGS had no problems chasing this total by getting 75-0, with Barny Horberry and Olly Lamb batting superbly to send HGS through the next round. The Y8 shared the success by beating Rossett in a competitive game, winning by 22 runs. Cooper Smith and Ben Stokes both performed outstandingly and a solid all round game from Matt Roberts saw HGS home comfortably in the end. In the next round we played Thirsk in a reduced over, rain affected match, where again Smith and Stokes ran the show, seeing HGS through comfortably to the next round. We play Ermysteds GS in the next round after half term. Congratulations to Ben and Cooper who have also both been pre-selected for the Yorkshire A team! Recently, the Y10 team played their cup fixture against Ashville. Ashville Batted first and knocked a score of Craig Robinson made easy work of that by scoring 51 not out and seeing HGS winning with 5 wickets to spare. A great team performance to send HGS through to the next round against Richmond. Thanks to Harrogate Cricket Club for their continued support in allowing HGS use of their fantastic facilities.

Y9 Rugby Rugby The Y9s continued their development this season with a competitive squad. As a result, training sessions were well attended and lots of progress was made. This resulted in an excellent run of results in the County Cup. Superb victories against PHGS and two times County Champions Rodillians, ensured a finals day showdown v Crossley Heath. In what can only be described as the final of the day, where the lead was exchanged seven times, unfortunately we were on the wrong side of a score line. The squad should be immensely proud of their achievements and can target next season with confidence, building on their continued development. Congratulations to Joe Nichols, Jack Haydock and Josh Salmon who have all made the ERDPP for next season. Girls Rugby Unfortunately much of the season was hit by the poor weather and all friendly tournaments were cancelled so apart from training the girls had no match experience prior to the N.Yorks Tournament. The U13s won their first match against the eventual winners, which showed great promise for things to come, but unfortunately they could not sustain their excellent start, winning only one more to finish 5 th out of 9 teams The U15s came into the tournament with high hopes, as runners up last year with a team a year young, hoping to go one better. The tournament was divided into two pools of four, victories against Ashville and Bedale and a draw against Nidderdale saw the team advance as winners of their pool. In the final, a comprehensive victory against York meant that they represented N. Yorks in the County Finals. This was played the following week at Wetherby RUFC. 3 wins, a draw and a loss, unfortunately meant the team did not reach the final, but runners up in the pool was their highest ever place and a testament to how much the girls have improved. Debutants Achele Agade and Sammy Henderson proved to be stars in the making, whilst individual performances by the whole squad throughout the two tournaments demonstrated why they were a pleasure to work with. Well done girls. Mr Mackay

It is an outstanding achievement to compete against the top independent schools in England and is testament to the talent within the school. Thanks also for the support from senior management, allowing boys to miss lessons for tournaments and the quality of coaching from Harrogate Hockey Club. It was also great to have all parents down supporting in Nottingham and their help and encouragement throughout the season has been appreciated greatly. Overall boys hockey has enjoyed another remarkable season: U12 North Yorkshire Champions, U13s 6 th in England and U14s Yorkshire runners up. Mr G. Tweedle Boys Hockey In the National Hockey Finals the U13 Boys finished 6 th in England. This was a big step up from last year (9 th ) and we actually came away slightly frustrated as 3 rd place was definitely possible. In the group games, HGS beat King Edwards, Southampton, 3-1, Ratcliffe College 3-2, drew with Felsted 3-3 and lost 0-2 to Dean Close. Unfortunately Dean Close knowing they were through to the final rested their key players in their final group game vs Ratcliffe and accepted a 0-2 loss. However, we should have beaten Felsted after leading 2-0. HGS finished third in the group behind Ratcliffe on goal difference and went through to the 5 th /6 th play-off. It was agreed that we would play our bench in this match as they had only enjoyed a few minutes of hockey in the group games. Despite having previously beaten Manchester Grammar in the North of England Final we went down fighting 0-3. With five Y7s on the pitch in this match the future is very healthy and the boys are ambitious to reach the National Finals for the third successive year. Table Tennis This year saw four teams playing in the Harrogate and District league from September to Easter once a week. In Div 3 the A team, Andy Broadbent, Paul Gumbley and Jon Nixon, stood up to the challenge of a higher league following their promotion last season, finishing a creditable 4 th. In Div 4, the B team, Tommy Coltman, Hamish Henderson and Alistair Muir, also promoted last year, led throughout the season only to come unstuck in the final run in, finishing 3 rd and missing out on promotion. The D team, Charlie Coltman, Harry Bowman, Tom Craddock and Finlay Darvill, as newcomers to Div 5 gained valuable experience in league play. However, the C Team, Jack London, Louis Maurice, Nathan Crocker and Peter Zammitt, showed excellent progress by finishing 2nd to gain promotion and in a fantastic cup run, beating several teams in the 1 st Div, we were runners up in the Charity Cup, a first for the club!

Girls Hockey Coached by Miss McComb throughout the season, the U14 girls battled through freezing temperatures and strong opposition to beat King James in a thrilling penalty shuffle to be crowned area champions. Georgia Felstead held her nerve in goal and defeated both penalty takers with awesome goalkeeping. Captaining the side, Georgia also demonstrated great leadership prior to and during the tournament. She is one of the best talents in goalkeeping that I have seen in a long while. They are a very happy bunch of girls who showed tremendous resilience for three hours in awful conditions. Mrs Barker Netball For the final training session for the U13 netball squad the girls decided to run a 'pay to play' tournament to raise money for the school charity. The girls managed to raise 40 through donations. Over the past term we have had 55 different girls coming and playing netball to improve their skills and virtually all of them have represented the school in at least one competitive fixture. To maintain this level of participation in such a short term with challenging weather conditions is virtually unheard of in most schools. We have also experienced huge success with our fixtures, beating a number of our local rivals in league matches and tournaments. I couldn't have achieved this success without the help of my committed Y11 helpers - Beth Auble, Amy Wotherspoon and Hannah Zammitt. I was also supported by Mrs Barker and Mrs Duckworth who gave up their valuable time to ensure we never had to cancel a practice when I was out on a fixture but also to help accommodate every student who wanted to play and not have to turn any of them away. My player of the season this year is Ella Foy. She had previously never attended any extra-curricular clubs and joined after playing netball in her PE lessons. Although she didn't know many of the girls, she attended every single practice and as a result has improved her netball, competed for school and grown massively in confidence. Miss Haslop

Climbing Climbing Schools Cup 2016 winners!! Six pupils represented Harrogate Grammar School in the Climbing Schools Cup at Depot Climbing Centre, Leeds. This year 140 people from 15 different schools took part, making this the biggest competition to date. Students from KS2 through to KS5 all took part, competing on the same problems as each other. In each Key stage there was a male and female sub category to compete for as well as the coveted Team Cup. This year s Team Cup was hotly contested with HGS just pipping Greenhead College to the title and in doing so winning The Depot Schools Cup The following pupils represented Harrogate Grammar School: Kim Mountney 1st in the KS3 female category Iris Eastaugh 3rd in the KS3 female category Ellen Young 1st in the KS4 female category Holly Rayfield 1st in the KS5 female category Ethan McGinn 2nd in the KS4 male category Adam Visick 2nd in the KS5 male category Other News A huge thanks to HGS parent Lisa O Reily and friends, who raised 505 for the PE Faculty by having a Six Nations Rugby fundraising event in February! It is still being decided how best to spend the money but it is likely that it will go to helping those students who are disadvantaged, through providing small grants for equipment & training or providing an event such as having an inspirational speaker coming in to school. Lisa is also hoping to organise a social event for any mums of current Y7 students, providing a chance to get to know one another and also review the first year at HGS! The event is intended to take place on Friday 15 th July with times and venue to be confirmed once interest has being gauged. If you are interested then please contact Lisa on lisa@tellonlyyourbestfriends.co.uk
