1 Forward to the Goal St Joseph s Boys & Girls AFC Newsletter - January 2015 Joey s Strictly Dancing Evening for Killiney This will be one of our biggest fundraising events of so make sure you put Easter Saturday 4th April in the diary early and tell your friends about it.we are asking everybody to get behind this night - it will be a very professional and polished performance at the Killiney Castle Hotel. All of the dancers will commence 6-weeks of intense preparation for the event - 15 couples will take part. An organising group is being established to manage the event and full deatils will be posted on the website and Facebook page when available. Anyone wishing to help in anyway should contact George Forsyth. Please visit the website for updates and progress over the coming weeks. As soon as the training starts we will have regular updates on the site. This event is being run in Association with Parkinson s Ireland. The following weekend has been provisionally earmarked for the start of the FA Academy League in England. Already the Football Association of Ireland, Celtic, Wolverhampton Wanderers & the Irish Football Association has confirmed their participation. Players for u15 team Players born in 2000 that would like to play for a team that s on a winning streak since Halloween (including cup win V Celbridge from the league above) are invited to make contact. Must be willing to train hard,interested in fitness, development and an eye on next season. Contact Keith Kavanagh on SFAI All-Ireland Four of our top Premier teams have reached the last 32. Our Under 12 have a home fixture fixture againsr Letterkenny Rangers. Our Under 13 entertain Pike Rovers from Limerick. Perhaps the toughest Game concerns our Under 15 team who travel to Galway to play Mervue. Finally our Under 16 team ebtertains Illistrin fromdonegal. We wish them all well and expect all of them to qualify to get into the last 16. But it will be hard work for all, as Cup competitions throw up some strange results.its down to the game on the day. 2 U11 s Couch to 5k Everyone arrived at precisely 5.30 pm in the car park ready for action and with much enthusiasm. As it turns out it was a delightful moonlight evening of November 12th, the storm had abated enough to let us organise the run. The under ten and under eleven girls St Joseph s Boys Football Teams arrived at Shanganagh park in Shankill,South County Dublin, to run their first couch to five k. It was chilly enough for coats and hats and as we assembled in the car park I thought to myself, I must be mad doing this at 8 months pregnant. Clearly this statement was true but my heart would not let me feign third trimester tiredness. U15 premiers Over the Christmas shutdown the under 15 prem continued their preparation of the 2nd half of the season. Challenging on three fronts manager Jay Costello together with his management and coaching team felt it was very important to keep the momentum going. We are top of the league with home games to come against both of our nearest rivals Belvo and Kevins. Added to that is a difficult league cup quarter final away to Home Farm and a mouth-watering last 32 All Ireland tie versus last year s runners up Mervue Utd in Galway on Jan 31st (winners travel to Killarney or Letterkenny). With this in mind we felt it vital to play some tough matches during the break Jay said. The U15 preparation came in the form of 3 under 16 premier sides Mountview, Shelbourne, Knocklyon together with a 7.1 win against the North Dublin Academy u15 side. We are pleased with our Christmasmas program of games said Jay. It gave us the chance to get all the panel involved and allowed us to try out different formations and tactics. We feel this should stand us in good stead for the challenges ahead - report Jay Costello Manager Under 15 premier Jim Brandon, the under 11 s manager, arrived in his van and promptly gave everyone a glow in the dark necklace. The idea being that we would see them, literally in the pitch dark fields that surrounded us. This was met with great excitement.we lit our torches and lined up against the wall for a head count. There were twenty three children in all, the youngest being little miss Cora Farrelly, being just five years old. We established the route and two groups, the fast group of runners and myself and some Parents at the back to pick up any stragglers lost in the mud. At least that was our excuse for being in the slow group. Needless to say we set off with great force and within no time, all we could see form the back was the fading torches and illuminated jackets of Aoife Scully and Jessie Patton as they disappeared into the distance.i soon wished I had heeded my own advise to wear wellies as my size 4 s converse were now saturated plodding through the puddles and muddy fields. We eventually caught up with the runners at the dog park( they actually caught up with us running an extra lap of the two back fields passing the ocean as they went). During all of this we could hear screams as Jim terrified them with tales of Did you see that Rat? And of course Debbie Mc Bride at the back with me telling me that we were going to drown in the puddles or fall into a swamp or off a cliff. I could barely walk with the laughter let alone with the fear of the pure darkness. An extract from Jill McDonald s report (See web for full story) Well Done Stephanie - you did us proud Colombia s James Rodriguez has won the FIFA Puskas Award at the Ballon d Or gala in Zurich as Ireland s Stephanie Roche missed out on the honour. The Republic of Ireland international and ex-joes players was competing against Rodriguez and Robin van Persie for the award which recognises the best goal in the last year. Rodriguez s strike [42%] edged out Roche audacious volley [33%] and the Manchester United man s header [11%]. The breakdown means that Roche claimed over a million of the 3.3 million votes cast. The goal was scored in front of a crowd of just 95 people at Wexford s Ferrycarrig Park, but over six million fans viewed the goal on YouTube and sparked hopes that Roche could become the first woman to claim the coveted award. However, despite a concerted campaign, Roche was beaten in the public vote by Rodriguez s stunning effort against Uruguay in the 2014 World Cup.

3 News & Information FAI Emerging Talent Programme The following players from our 12 Premier, Under 13 Premier & Under 14 Premier have been involved in the FAI Emerging Talent League so far this season; - Under 12 Suffie Edris, Billy Vance, Josh McGlone, Neil Langan, Ryan O Neill, David Power & Leigh Kavanagh Under 13 Aran Moore, Enda Minogue, Ross Molloy, James Furlong, Mipo Odubeko, Cian Kelly, Alex Rafferty, Precious Omochere, Sean Kenna & Cormac Moore Under 14 Callum Thompson, Cillian Flynn, Andrew Byrne, Jamie Crilly U15 International Call Ups Mark Kelly, Dominic Peppard & Glen McAuley from our u15 premiers have been called up to the u15 international versus Scotland in Kerry later this month. Aaron Bolger, Tom Murphy & Joe Redmond have also been placed on standby. Rep of Ireland U16 Training Camp Two players with our u16 team have been called into international training camp set for 28th January and 5th February at the AUL. We wish Aaron Dobbs and Joe Breen the very best for this important step in football. Dean Mahon Signs for Bohemian FC Dean Mahon has joined up with former Joes player & coach On the Move On behalf of everyone in the club we would like to wish Keith Long (Bohemian FC), Eddie Wallace (Athlone Town) & Pat Devlin (UCD) all the very best for the upcoming Airtricity league season in their new roles at their respective clubs. Keith, Eddie & Pat have contributed a lot to Joes over the years in various capacities including notably as players & leaders. Eddie is also joined in Athlone Town with former Joes players & leaders Garry Zambra & Lar Mahony. Congrats to Niamh Sheehan Well done and congratulations to Niamh Sheehan from our u18 Girls who scored the winning goal in the Republic of Ireland s u victory against Northern Ireland (13th January) recently. Niamh Sheehan Dean Mahon Keith Long at Bohemian FC for the upcoming 2015 Airtricity League season. Dean (only turned 17) signs for Bohs from our Senior team were heimpressed between the sticks recently. Dean will be joined in the first team squad in Bohs, with another former Joes player - Dylan Hayes who has signed for the Gypsies after a 3 year spell with Derby County Mixed Fortunes for Joes Players in FA Youth Cup There was mixed fortunes for Dylan Barnett (Brighton & Hove Albion), Mikey Quigley (Carlisle United) & Dan Casey (Sunderland) in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup. Unfortunately Brighton lost out 2-0 to Derby County at the Amex Stadium and Carlisle United lost 2-1 to Barnsley at Brunton Park however Dan Casey s Sunderland defeated Ipswich Town 3-1 (AET) at the Stadium of Light to set up a mouth watering tie against Newcastle United on the 4th February in the Stadium of Light. Commiserations to Dylan & Mikey and congratulations to Dan. Joeys Academy Our Junior Academy for boys & girls aged between 5 & 7 recommences on Sunday 1st February at 10am in the club. The cost for the term is 80. The academy is a fun, skills based football programme that allows boys & girls enjoy their first experience of football in a safe & relaxed environment. Donal & the rest of the coaches look forward to seeing you on soon.

4 U13 major - sat Cold morning for the boys but some good individual performances - one that we picked up is shown below. It involved the goalkeeper and right full - the distance that the goalkeeper covered in preventing the forward (who had got behind the right full) in getting set for a shot on goal. He covered some 18yds to make a very good save at the feet of the forward. The determined recovery and pressure on the forward by the full-back was also a key factor in this attack s outcome. 5 Coaches Corner Fullbacks - Tactical and Positional analysis The attacking fullback is seen by many as the most important position in the modern game but in fact, fullbacks have been a big part of the game for quite a while now. Everybody knows about Maicon, Dani Alves, Ashley Cole etc but if you cast your mind back it s tough to forget fullbacks like the Brazilian duo Cafu & Roberto Carlos, or the French fullbacks Lillian Thuram and Lizararu who helped France to a Word Cup in 1998; even the likes of Gary Neville and Paolo Maldini were overlapping, and bombing up the wing in the early 1990 s The attacking fullback is a demanding position because players have to be able to attack and defend throughout the whole game which is not only physically but mentally demanding. The influx of unorthodox wingers i.eft footed winger playing on the right side and coming inside has added even more need for fullbacks to provide width when attacking. Attacking Qualities Desire to get forward/attacking mindset Attack with pace Understand when to get forward Always look to support teammates Understand triggers Quality passing at top speed End product i.e pass, cross shot Know when to overlap/underlap Fast transition when ball is won Give WIDTH Defending Qualities Understand their defensive priorities Read the game well for interceptions Recovery runs after losing the ball Comfortable in 1v1 situations Confident in the tackle Fast transition when ball is lost Physically strong Blocking shots Know when to tuck in Know opponent to show inside/outside Playing out from the back Building from the back is something I strongly believe in and I think all youth teams should be coached to play from the back. Fullbacks can be vital to being able to build from the back, whether the touch the ball or not, and below is a couple of examples of how you can build from the back. 6 Joeys Junior Disco Following on from the success of our first Junior Disco at the end of November, the club are hosting our second Junior Disco ( year olds) on Saturday 31st January in the clubhouse.
