Homewood Soccer Club Academy Curriculum Fall 2016

Overview and Philosophy

Overview and Philosophy Homewood Soccer Club s Academy is the founda>on of our compe>>ve program. Our Academy Director is a USSF/USYS cer>fied specialist for these ages. Our players receive an educa>on that prepares them for success at the highest levels of compe>>on available for youth soccer. Our academy provides the building blocks for an individual player s ability to control the ball and learn the skills necessary to develop as a well-rounded player prepared for the next phase of their development. The academy teaches the very basics of tac>cs and coopera>on as players begin to work in small groups. With these two years of experience, players exit the academy with an excellent base for the 7v7 and 9v9 leagues before going on to 11v11.

Overview and Philosophy (con t) Homewood Soccer follows the guidelines of the USSF and USYS by ensuring that the development of the player is paramount. While learning to compete is a vital aspect of youth sport, we understand that, at this point in a youth player s path, the most important aspect is nurturing a love for the game and educa>ng players on the necessary skills in order to enjoy and play the game to its full poten>al. In order to develop this curriculum, HWSC has used material from Alabama Soccer Associa>on (ASA), United States Soccer Federa>on (USSF), US Youth Soccer (USYS), Union of European Football Associa>ons (UEFA), and the Irish Football Associa>on (IFA). Thank you for taking the >me learn more about our academy. Should you have any ques>ons, please direct them to our Academy Director, Mason Cook or our Technical Director, Rob Dominguez. 5 Style of Play

Style of Play Technical Passing & receiving: Shoo3ng Ball control and turning Dribbling Goalkeeping Passing the ball on the ground with pace from different distances and receiving the ball while keeping it moving will be encouraged in all age groups. Players must develop the ability to shoot from different distances. All players will be encouraged to shoot from any distance during the game. Players will be encouraged to keep close control of the ball and use different turning techniques to move away from the defender. Players will learn different techniques for dribbling at speed, in close-quarters, and to beat opponents. All players will receive training and development in the basics of goalkeeping; all players will also play in goal throughout the season. * Used with the permission of ASA from the EPD Curriculum (2014).

Style of Play Tac3cal Playing out from the back Possession & transi3on All teams must feel comfortable playing the ball from the back through the midfield and from there to the final quarter of the field. All teams must try to keep possession of the ball playing a one-two touch game. Players will be encouraged to support and move, thus crea>ng passing op>ons. Once the possession game is consolidated the team must learn how to transfer the ball in the most efficient way from one area of the field to another. Offense-defense quick transi3on & vice versa When possession is lost, players must react quickly and apply pressure to regain the ball. Once possession is regained, players will be posi>oned immediately to counter-aaack. * Used with the permission of ASA from the EPD Curriculum (2014).

Style of Play Physical Agility, Balance, and Coordina3on Endurance Strength & power These quali>es are the building blocks for all physical ac>vity in making player physically literate for this sport and an overall healthy lifestyle. At >mes, non-soccer games will be u>lized in order to develop maximal motor skill and cogni>on ability. Individual players and teams will train to be resilient to high-intensity ac>on. Strong players develop their speed more quickly, prevent injuries and are more compe>>ve in games. * Used with the permission of ASA from the EPD Curriculum (2014).

Style of Play Psychosocial Respect & discipline Coopera3on Compe33veness Players will adapt to a role on the team and respect teammates, coaches, referees and opponents. Each player will be part of a unit, and will cooperate with teammates to achieve the objec>ves for a given task, session or game, as well as for the en>re season. Compe>>ve players will be rewarded for their effort and focus. * Used with the permission of ASA from the EPD Curriculum (2014).

Principles of Play

Principles of Play Coaches: 1. Possession games are means to improve both the technique and tac>cal understanding of the players. 2. Opposi>on will be encouraged to increase the compe>>veness of the players. 3. High-intensity games based on speed and agility. Short but intense working-periods. * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Principles of Play AJacking/Defending: AJacking 1. Width 2. Improvisa>on 3. Mobility 4. Penetra>on 5. Support Defending 1. Pressure 2. Cover 3. Balance * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Principles of Play Players: 1. 1, 2 or 3 touch maximum: Minimizing the number of touches improves the speed of play. 2. Keep the game simple: Do not force situa>ons, over-dribble or be careless with the ball. 3. Keep the ball on the ground: A ball on the ground is easier to control and can be moved more efficiently by the team. 4. Accuracy and quality of the pass: Passing must be firm and accurate, with the proper weight. 5. First touch: Make a clean, controlled first touch without stopping the ball. Take the touch away from pressure and into free space. 6. Percep3on and awareness: All players with or without the ball should constantly scan the field. 7. 1v1 situa3ons: Encourage determina>on to regain control of the ball in defense and keep it simple in aaack by taking a touch to the side, at speed, to beat the defender. 8. Individual transi3on: Players must react quickly when possession change from offense to defense and vice-versa. 9. Shoo3ng: Always keep an eye on the goal. All players are encouraged to shoot. 10. Take risks: Soccer is an error prone sport and mistakes are part of the game and learning process. Players are encouraged to take risks in training session to increase the speed of play. * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Principles of Play Group/Team: 1. All players ajack and all players defend: All players must be involved in the game as a unit. 2. Numerical advantage: Soccer is a game of numbers where we try to create a numerical advantage in aaack and avoid being in a numerical disadvantage in defense. 3. Flow of the ball: The ball should flow from inside (of the space) to outside and outside to inside. Balls out wide are more secure and the ball in the middle increases the op>ons of play. 4. Triangle principle and passing op3ons: The player in possession of the ball must receive constant support and have at least two passing op>ons. 5. Speed of play: Quick movement of the ball creates 2v1 situa>ons. 6. Movement off the ball: Find the best available space to create passing op>ons for the player in possession of the ball. 7. Pressure as a unit: Organized pressure forces the opponents to commit errors. 8. Transi3on: Improve transi>on by reducing the number of passes needed to arrive at the target area or the opponent s goal. 9. Direc3on of the game: The game flows in two direc>ons. Keep the essence of the game in the majority of your prac>ces. 10. Take ini3a3ve during the game: Team breakdowns will occur. The team must be capable of imposing its own style during the flow of the game. * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Training Methodology

Training Methodology HWSC will incorporate a number of tools in the academy to ensure player development throughout the season. One recent shik in the world of youth soccer has been the organiza>on of seasons into cycles, or phases. The largest of these phases is called a mesocycle. From there, smaller divisions exist such as micro-cycles. For the purpose of HWSC s youth academy, we will use three different mesocycles: 1. Founda3ons focusing on improving first-touch, dribbling ability, and familiarity with the ball 2. Small-group ajacking and defending focusing on the basics of working with teammates in both the aaack and defense 3. Func3onal Training focusing on improving a player s ability to execute his or her individual role in rela>on to his or her teammates. * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Coaching Methodology

Coaching Methodology Throughout the season, HWSC coaches for the Academy will have a number of responsibili>es and methods of communica>on. Staff will use a tracking system through the season to document and foster development of players throughout the season; this helps to ensure each individual player s needs are being met. HWSC Academy staff will use the following: 1. Varied coaching methods For example, whole-part-whole, func>onal training, etc. 2. Weekly technical reports parents will receive a weekly from the staff coach regarding training ac>vi>es and events (such as playdates, etc.). 3. Weekly player ra3ngs staff will, on a weekly basis, chart the growth of players using a system that incorporates the four corners of development (technical ability, tac>cal understanding, psychosocial maturity, and physical ability). These ra>ngs will be used to track the development, monitor the growth, and to aid in team forma>on for playdates. These ra>ngs are by-staff, and for-staff only. 4. Player Evalua3ons twice during the season (once at the mid-way point and once at the end of the season) HWSC Academy staff will meet with parents and players to conduct a formal evalua>on of a player s growth throughout the season. * USSF Curriculum (2010).

Example AcEvity Mesocycle Three: FuncEonal Training What surfaces are we using for the pass? The control? How can we get the ball in the air? When is this useful in a game? Coaching Points: Proper striking technique

System of Play

System of Play Teams in the academy will use a as a standard forma>on. HWSC has chosen this forma>on for several reasons: 1. It promotes a possession-based style of play 2. It helps to establish the founda>on for a system of play when they reach 11-aside 3. It can easily transform to a number of other systems of play to meet the condi>ons of the match

Parent EducaEon

Parent EducaEon You and your child chose to enter the HWSC Academy, and that choice was due to a desire to develop, learn and grow. HWSC strives to provide the environment necessary for that to occur. Without coaches, players, and parents all being on the same page, growth, development, and learning are difficult. As this is an inaugural year, it is incredibly important to understand that a systemic approach must be taken in order for success to occur. With that in mind, HWSC will provide the following to ensure parent understanding and involvement within the program: 1. Coach Meet-and-Greet Night/Overall discussion of Academy philosophy 2. Periodic feedback throughout the season including weekly technical reports, player evalua>ons, interac>on and feedback from the staff and Academy Director 3. Con>nual ar>cles and helpful informa>on for youth sport on the Academy page of homewoodsoccer.com 4. End-of-season parent mee>ng to recap, review, and discuss the next season
