2 CHAIRMAN S WELCOME This afternoon we extend a warm welcome the officials, management and players of Pontypridd Town AFC for the 12th league game of the season. Results have taken an upturn during the month of November as the first team squad has begun to play to the standard all at UWIC know they are capable of. Clearly the playing style and formation advocated by Christian Edwards Director of Football is making a significant impact on encouraging players to express their undoubted abilities. Notable recent results have seen UWIC AFC beat West End, Div 1, in the league cup and winning away at Goetre in the league. The team is now playing with more confidence and belief in their undoubted ability, it is time to consolidate on these recent performances and progress towards our goals of gaining promotion in The Welsh and BUCS leagues. All at UWIC have every confidence that these targets can be achieved and look forward to the consistent performances we know the players can produce. 7 OUR VISITORS PONTYPRIDD TOWN AFC A BRIEF HISTORY OF PONTYPRIDD TOWN The history of the modern Pontypridd Football Club began in 1991 when the failing Welsh League side of Ynysybwl amalgamated with local league side Pontypridd Sports & Social Club to form Pontypridd & Ynysybwl FC. After one season of playing their home games at the Recreation Ground in Ynysybwl the club moved to their new home in Ynysangharad Park, on the site of the former Pontypridd RFC Ground, and changed their name to their current one, that of Pontypridd Town. With the help of the local council new changing rooms were opened, floodlights installed and the stand at Ynysangharad Park were upgraded making it one of the better grounds in the league. The changes also brought some good fortune as a sixth place finish in Division Two was, due to reorganisation of the Welsh League following the formation of the League of Wales, enough to earn promotion to the top division for the first time in the club s history. The 1992/93 season saw the club enjoy its highest ever league position when they finished in third place with just 3 defeats in 26 games. Fifth place was achieved in 1993/94, and eleventh in 1994/95, but the 1995/96 season brought mixed emotions. The season saw the club go on a memorable Welsh Cup run. Away victories over Llanwern (4-0), Newport YMCA (4-2) and Taff s Well (1-0) saw Anglesey based League of Wales team Cemaes Bay visit The Park and be defeated 1-0. The quarter finals brought a tie against eventual winners Llansantffraid of the League of Wales. Although leading through a Romano Bacchetta goal at half time, two goals from Tommy Morgan took the visitors through. But at the end of the season, after originally ending the season in eleventh place, Pontypridd were deducted seven points by the league for fielding an ineligible player, which resulted in the club being relegated to the Second Division. The club hung on to Second Division status for three seasons before relegation back to the basement in 1998/ /01 season saw the club finally climb to safety after a season of struggle after former Ynysybwl player Brian Gibson was appointed as player/manager. The 2001/02 saw the club clinch third place, and promotion back into the Second Division. The 2004/2005 season saw the club finish in 5th place with promotion back into the first Division being obtained the following season.. In 2007 Pontypridd challenged for the Welsh League title but had to settle for a third place finish. Finance problems saw relegation follow the following season and by 2008 the club was in talks with Treforest FC about a merger. Talks collapsed and the club played on although they finished bottom and were back in Division Three. From where, under the Chairmanship of businessman Phil Gibb and manager Allan Davies, they hope to achieve promotion this season

11 Swanny s Match Report This much anticipated game lived up to its expectations. Last year s dominant front two played out a great game in front of a bumper crowd. Despite much of the early possession it was UWIC who fell behind to a sloppy early goal. Switching off from a throw in cost the UWIC defence dearly as the home side opened up an early lead. It was however, the students who stamped their authority on the game with their usual passing game. Although possession was plenty the young UWIC side found chances at a premium. Midway through the first half UWIC opened their account with a well worked corner. Inter-play between Kristian Speake and Kyle McCarthy resulted in a long ball to the far post where James Ward calmly slotted home The pattern of the game continued throughout the remainder of the half as UWIC pressed the home defence time after time. The second half started brightly for UWIC where the impressive Steve Bowen and Ed Jones combined well to set up Ross Frame for his 16 th goal of the season. Great hold up play by Maximus Wdolski, allowed Steve Bowen to release the inspired Jones who in turned crossed for Frame to score one of his easiest gaols of the season. A quick fire third soon appeared when Tom Edmonds the UWIC custodian caught the home side napping. His long direct ball played in Ross Frame to notch his 17 th of what has become a prolific season. The visitors looked assured of all three points until the final 10 minutes when the Goytre midfield picked up a loose UWIC knock down. A neat one-two allowed Lee Jenkins of Goytre to smash home a brilliant 30 yard half volley past the hapless UWIC GK. 3-2 UWIC. A nervous last five minutes ended with a away victory for the much improved UWIC side. Keep the good work going men. Swanny DOG s RESERVE TEAM REPORT Things are ticking along nicely as we approach the festive break. Since my last report we have had two victories and one away draw which I and my assistant Sang Wuk are very happy with. We are particularly pleased with the transition from the training ground to match days. We have worked hard on passing, movement and set piece play and our efforts seem to be bearing fruit. All credit to the players who have worked very hard to develop their game. Again the numbers in training has been superb. That said we must not take our foot off the gas and not be complacent. A 1-1 hard fought draw away at Abertillery Bluebirds with a Ross Oakley goal and a man of the match performance from skipper Will Fuller in the sticks followed a 3-0 home win the following week, against the same opposition. Goals from Ben Davies, Max Davies and Matt Micklewright and the first clean sheet since 24 th September was very pleasing. We are playing the passing style of football introduced by Christian Edwards and moving the ball at every opportunity. The BUCS cup was a welcome break from the tough BUCS league we find ourselves in. A 1-0 away win at Glamorgan 3 rd FC was great reward for an indifferent performance on 30 th November. A number of players were rested and we have utilised the squad, which proves we have some strength in depth. We are safely in the hat for the next round. Very encouraging is the last two games have given us two clean sheets and this has been marked with the return to fitness of centre half Ben Davies who has been a rock at the heart of defence. Will Fuller has been excellent in goal as has Eddie Dale when he has played. The return to fitness of Nick Glover and Rhys Evans has given us balance in the heart of the team. Max Davies has been a constant threat and has given us a continued supply of goals from the left flank. A wonderful turn out for the funeral of our secretary and dear friend Alun Evans from UWIC AFC players and staff on 24 th November who sadly passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time. No game this Saturday 3 rd September so I hope we all boost the crowd and get behind the 1 st team at home to Pontypridd this afternoon. We will train in the morning to keep our fitness levels up. A tough away trip in BUCS to Gloucester on 7 th December is followed by a home fixture to Cardiff Corries and a difficult away trip in the reserve cup at Afan Lido FC takes us to Christmas. We are desperate for points in BUCS so anything we can get from Gloucester will be a bonus. Lets keep the momentum going until Xmas, enjoy our party and back to hard work straight after. Up the Archer! Dave O Gorman
