FISH BITES The Marlins return from the Midsummer Classic on the road for a seven-game trip, opening at St. Louis (July 15-17) for three games. Tonight matches up two southpaws, with Wei-Yin Chen (5-3, 4.83), who is facing the Cardinals for the first time in his career, starting for Miami opposite St. Louis Jaime García (6-6, 4.01); he is 2-0 in four career starts against the Fish with a 1.07 ERA (25.1 ip/3 er). Miami wrapped up the first half of the season with a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, its fourth series sweep of the season. After this three-game series in St. Louis the Marlins head to NL East opponent Philadelphia for four games (July 18-21). The Fish will return home for a 10-game homestand seeing the Mets (July 22-24), the Phillies (July 25-27), and the Cardinals (July 28-31). RECENT TRANSACTIONS The Marlins on July 13 optioned C Tomás Telis to Triple-A New Orleans, and today recalled UTL Yefri Perez (#77) from Double-A Jacksonville. FIRST HALF RUNDOWN The Marlins return from the All-Star break with a record of 47-41, marking the first time since 2009 they are over.500 entering the second half. This marks the second time in Club history they are six-or-more games over.500 at the break, behind a Franchise-best 50-36 in 1997. Miami has not dipped below.500 after April 28, a stretch of 67 games. The Fish finished the first half with a National League-best.273 team batting average, the highest by any team in Club history at the break. The bullpen has been strong thus far, ranking third in the NL (eighth in MLB) with 16 wins by relievers. The pen combined for 299 strikeouts, which is the second-highest first half total in Franchise history, behind 303 in 2014, and ranks fourth in the NL. The entire pitching staff set a Club record for strikeouts before the All-Star break with 746, surpassing the previous mark of 712 in 2014. Defensively, the Marlins have committed 42 errors, the third fewest in the NL (fourth in MLB) and have the fourth-highest fielding percentage, at.987 (sixth in MLB). Miami infielders also set a Major League record (dating back to 1913) with 28 consecutive errorless games from May 30-June 29. STATS LLC ALL- STAR RECAP Miami sent four players to the All-Star Game for the third time in Club history (2004, 2005). The Fish sent three pitchers, José Fernández, A.J. Ramos and Fernando Rodney, with Fernandez (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) and Rodney (0.2 IP, 1 K) both making an appearance in the game. Marcell Ozuna, who started in center field in his first All-Star selection, was 1x2 with an RBI. THE KING IS BACK Giancarlo Stanton entered the break batting.329 (27x82) over his last 21 games, with eight home runs and 21 RBI, after batting.118 (12x102) with two homers and 5 RBI over 29 games from May 7 to June 15. On the final day of the first half, July 10, he hit his 20 th home run of the season, marking his seventh career 20-homer season. According to STATS LLC, he was second-youngest player ever to notch seven 20-homer seasons (26.245), behind only Mel Ott (26.135). Stanton is coming off an eventful All-Star break, as he won the 2016 Home Run Derby in historic fashion. He set a new Derby record with 61 home runs, surpassing the previous record of 41 by Bobby Abreu in 2005. In the final round Stanton outpaced defending champion Todd Frazier, 20-13, to become the first Marlins' player ever to win the Derby. LEAGUE OF NATIONS Tonight's pitching matchup of left-handers Wei-Yin Chen and Jaime Garcia has an international flair. According to STATS LLC, Garcia (Mexico) sports the secondbest winning percentage (min. 100 starts) by a left-handed pitcher born outside of the United States in Major League history, at.604 (58-38), while Taiwan-native Chen (.593/51-35) ranks fourth. Venezuelan Johan Santana (.641/139-78) is the all-time leader, and Teddy Higuera (Mexico) ranks third (.595/94-64). GOING RIGHT AGAINST THE LEFT The Marlins boast a.714 (15-6) winning percentage when facing left-handed starting pitchers this season, the best mark in baseball, ahead of the Cubs (.667/20-10). Miami owns the fourth-best team batting average in the National League vs. left-handers at.267, behind San Diego (.283), Arizona (.276) and Washington (.272). Miami has two hitters who rank in the top five in the National League against southpaws in Martín Prado, who leads the NL with a.403 average (31x77), and Marcell Ozuna, who is tied for fourth with a.368 average (28x76). CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE With the sweep over Cincinnati prior to the All-Star Break, Miami improved to 13-4 (.765) against teams in the National League Central this season, leading the NL in winning percentage. The Marlins have now won five straight against NL Central clubs, and nine of their last 10 games against the division. It is part of a larger trend for the Fish, however. According to STATS LLC, Miami has an MLB-best.730 winning percentage (27-10) vs. other divisions within its league this season; that is currently the third-best mark since division play began in 1969, behind only the 2015 Pirates (.773/51-15) and the 2001 Mariners (.744/64-22). THE NEW FAB FIVE The Marlins are currently the only ML team with five qualifying batters hitting.300-or-better this year. It is the fifth time a team has had five-plus players batting.300-or-better at the All-Star break over the last 40 years. The last team with five players batting.300 or better at the All-Star break was Pittsburgh in 1999. The three other teams are Colorado in 1996, and Cincinnati in 1977 and '76. Martín Prado leads the way for Miami with a.324 average, and is followed by J.T. Realmuto (.317), Christian Yelich (.317), Marcell Ozuna (.307) and Derek Dietrich (.303). ROAD WARRIORS As a team, Miami leads the Majors with a.289 road average and 474 hits, while second to the Cubs (.349) with a.346 on-base percentage. Historically, the Marlins best single-season road average was in 2005, when they ranked second in the Majors with a.276 average, behind Boston (.281). According to STATS LLC, the Marlins road average this season is the third-highest by an NL team since 1969, trailing only the 1970 Dodgers (.293) and 1999 Mets (.291). This year's marauding is being led by Martín Prado, who is tied for MLB-best.398 batting average on the road, while J.T. Realmuto ranks third at.380. Since April 30, Adeiny Hechavarria has also gotten into the act, posting a.336 road average, seventh-best in the NL since that date. Returned and allowed just two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six in 6.1 innings. Earned first win with Marlins on April 25 at Los Angeles, holding Dodgers to two runs, six hits (two home runs) while walking one with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
