The Spirit of Dance In His Steps Performance Troupe Parent/Dancer Agreement & Handbook 2018-2019 1 P age

Placement Placement in the In His Steps Performance Troupe is based on the following criteria: Must have 2 consecutive years of ballet training, technique, potential, commitment level, enthusiasm, attitude and behavior in class, attendance and stage presence. We place students together in groups that we feel will work best together in rehearsals and performances. Performance Troupe members are selected by instructors and will be invited into the appropriate Performance Troupe class. Dancer Etiquette Dance clothes should be neat and clean. Dance shoes worn during class should NEVER be worn outside. Long and short hair must be pulled back away from face in a ponytail for all dance styles except Ballet, when hair MUST be in a bun. Jewelry, watches, and other accessories may not be worn in class. Students will be asked to change should they arrive to class in unacceptable attire. If coming and leaving from the studio dressed in dance clothes, students must wear a cover up over their dance clothes. There will be no food, drinks, or gum inside any of the dance studios. Water is the only beverage permitted in studios. We encourage all students to bring their own water bottle. NO cell phones in class. Thank instructors after every class. No visible undergarments allowed under leotards. Underwear should not be worn under tights. Dancers en pointe must not dance in worn-out, dead shoes. This is dangerous for the dancer. A teacher who notices dead pointe shoes may request that the student dance in ballet slippers until proper pointe shoes are available. 2 P age

Attendance & Time Commitment Listed below are excused absences and what needs to be done if your child misses class. EXCUSED ABSENCES: Sickness Please see our attached Wellness Policy for details. Graded school functions Family emergencies 1. If your dancer has two or more excused absences, the dancer will need to schedule a private lesson* with their specific teacher to get caught up on Choreography. 2. If your dancer has one unexcused absences, it is the dancer s responsibility to ask the teacher what they missed, and can they get caught up during class or do they need to schedule a private. * 3. If your dancer has two or more consecutive absences from class, this will result in the dancer being pulled from the section of dance that was taught during the time they missed. 4. INJURED STUDENTS If your dancer is injured, please come to class if possible. This helps your dancer stay caught up on Choreography and new techniques. Coming to watch class even if you can t dance because of an injury shows initiative and commitment. *Private lessons must be scheduled at a time when the dance studio is open for regularly scheduled business or at McEachern Methodist upon request from the church. If your child is continuing to miss, with unexcused absences, many times over, you may want to rethink In His Steps and change to recreational classes in the next season. Dress Code Dress code provides the following benefits: 1. First, we want to teach our students to "respect the art." Dress codes in dance look more professional and are part of the long history of dance. 2. Dance is a discipline and begins with the way a student dresses for class. By "dressing the part," a student looks like, behaves like, and "becomes" a dancer. 3. A neat and tidy appearance sets an attitude of attentiveness and respect for students, teacher, and the art of dance. 4. Teachers must be able to see a dancer s alignment, lines and positioning from head to toe to make proper corrections when needed. 5. A dress code cuts down on distractions in class such as who's wearing the latest cute dance attire or popular trends, and helps promote class unity. Students who are not dressed properly for dance will not be allowed to participate in class! They will be given two warnings and on the third time will be asked to sit out of class. Ballet: Black Leotard, Pink Tights, Pink Ballet Shoes, Hair in bun for all ballet classes. (No shorts or leotards with skirts attached allowed) Black ballet wrap skirt is permitted. ***This section is for students who have been invited into pointe classes. This page must be signed by the dancer and parent and brought to the first summer Pointe class*** Pre/Pointe & Pointe Class Pointe is a commitment that should be taken very seriously. We consider various factors before we put students on pointe. Students need to be aware that pointe work is hard and often frustrating but it has enormous rewards. Dancing on pointe is a unique and elite experience. It takes years of commitments and hard work and is a huge accomplishment. We hope that our dancers feel a great amount of pride. Therefore, a pair of pointe shoes should be treated with utmost respect. They should be cared for and stored as you would a prize procession. It is also why you should take your pointe education seriously. Dancers must attend ballet technique class two times a week while a pointe dancer. Dancers must call if they will be missing a class and plan a makeup time. Dancers must also uphold dress code, code of conduct and be good Christ like examples to other students. They must have an excellent attendance record: at least 90% of classes and 90% of all rehearsals. If this doesn t happen, your child will be asked to work off pointe until their attendance is up. By signing the bottom portion, you understand the commitment level & attitude expected of you. I,, have read, reviewed and voluntarily submit to the terms and conditions set forth in this contract. I am able and willing to attend scheduled events. I understand that breach of this contract [failure to adhere to the terms of this contract] will result in probation or removal from pointe classes. Students of The Spirit of Dance should strive to behave in a positive and constructive manner at all times and to utilize truth, fairness and integrity in the development of personal decisions and relationships both inside and out of the classroom.
