WELCOME TO CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING Minnetonka Middle School East Informational meeting is on Wednesday September 7 th in the Media Center from 4.15-5.00pm Who is welcome? Everyone! Cross country is open to all students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at MME. There are no tryouts, cuts, or roster limits. How do I sign up? Visit the registration website: http://www.minnetonkaschools.org/activities/middle/mme/registration 1. Register for CC running Remember each student needs a valid MSHSL Physical Exam to complete this process. 2. Pay the fees $50 participation fee this fee is paid only once per year regardless of the number of activities you sign up for. $60 CC running fee ALL FEES AND FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE A STUDENT ATTENDS PRACTICE. The preseason meeting will be Wednesday, September 07 after school in the Media Center. After school on Monday, September 12th is the first practice. The season ends in late October. What do runners need? RUNNING shoes are recommended. Local running stores like TC Running, Start Line, Gear West, and Mill City Running are great at fitting new runners into shoes and give a team discounts if you mention you are running for Minnetonka. Running in street sneakers, basketball shoes, etc. is not a good idea due to the stresses placed on the body during running. Comfortable running apparel- shorts, tee shirt, etc. I also suggest storing some warmer clothes (incl. lightweight hat and gloves) as we will go outside everyday regardless of temperature.

What do we do at practice? The amount of running at practice is determined by the experience and desire of the runner. The coaches want the athletes to enjoy the activity and develop according to a plan made by the coach and each individual. A sample week looks like this (Meets are on a variety of days) A daily warm-up, stretch and announcements, followed by: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: 2-5 miles with sprint drills and strides the hardest day of the week (perhaps intervals or tempo run) 2-5 miles with weight training or sprint drills Cross country meet the longest run of the week Practice ends around 5.20pm and each student should be picked up by 5:30pm. What to know about the meets The races are 1 mile, 1.5 miles, or (one race which is) 3000 meters. Boys and Girls race separately 6th and 7th grade run together Meets will likely take place during rain, but certainly not if there is lightning Meets take about an hour, and we are usually back to school by 5:45. Runners can be picked up from the meet, but the coach must speak directly to the parent before leaving. I also encourage everyone to stay and cheer on their teammates before leaving. Because meets begin before the end of the school day, students will usually miss their 7th hour class. It is the student s responsibility to take care of communicating with the teacher and getting homework assignments before the meet (teachers are used to accommodating athletes and the early release.) You can view the schedule and sign up for electronic reminders and notification of schedule changes at the following website: http://www.classicmsjh.org/g5-bin/client.cgi?g5genie=276&school_id=4 In the view schedules box, highlight the sport you need information on Under the view schedules box, click on view The schedule will open in a new window click on a location for the address and a map Close the schedule window and in the original window, click on the notify me tab ; follow the prompts so you can receive e-mails and/or text messages to notify you of schedule changes or cancellations. I will also be posting regularly to the Schoology page.

August Opportunity: For those who are interested, middle schoolers may sign up to begin practice with Minnetonka High School on August 15th. It is recommended that any students interested should be running at least a few times a week prior to the start of practice. Information can be found below. Stacie Olson will be the MS contact for girls who wish to take this opportunity: stacie.olson@minnetonka.k12.mn.us Kelly Lewis will be the MS contact for the boys who wish to take this opportunity: kelly.lewis@minnetonka.k12.mn.us Practice will be offered Monday-Friday with the HS teams (boys and girls) until Labor Day and will include 2 additional races. Once school begins, practice will be at MME. Scroll below for more information. Where can I get more information? See below. Also, for those who join the team, I suggest signing up for the schoology group with the access code GP29D-S722N parents should do this too. If you were on the team last year, you should still be signed up however sometimes things get cleared out over the summer, so you may need to sign up again. Please contact me with any other questions at carson.hoeft@minnetonka.k12.mn.us Also coaching are Anna Schoeneberger and Stacie Olson, and we are looking forward to an amazing season!

MME and MMW cross country runners may start practice with the MHS teams on Aug.15 th. REGISTER ON THE MME ACTIVITIES WEBSITE BY AUGUST! (We hope to have the website live in early August) Middle school runners can also join their respective school s team after the start of the school year. Attendance at the August MHS practices is recommended but not required. Notes regarding starting early with the MHS runners: Runners will be expected to run a minimum of one mile without stopping in less than 10 minutes. 7 th and 8 th grade runners will be strongly encouraged to run two races with the MHS team: September 2 at Rosemount (morning around 9:00 a.m.) and September 8 at Gale Woods (race time at 3:00). You need to register as an MME athlete (do NOT register on the MHS website). Girls August practices will run from 7:30 to 9:30, Monday through Friday at MME. If you have questions contact MME coach Stacie Olson at stacie.olson@minnetonka.k12.mn.us. Boys August practices will run from 8:00 9:30, Monday through Friday at MHS (meet down on the track).
