Join the Houston County 4-H Dog PDC on Saturday, May 19th at 10:00am at the Houston County Fairgrounds for a day of fun with your dog! NEW! Fashion Revue Fashion Revue is scheduled for July 11 at Christ Lutheran Church. For more information about the event, see the project information packet. NEW! Alpha Gamma Rho North Star Showdown The Alpha Gamma Rho North Star Showdown, a junior beef show, will be held at the Goodhue County Fairgrounds on May 26. This year they are partnering with Goodhue County 4-H to put on a showmanship, nutrition, and fitting clinic. NEW! 2018 Fillmore County Sheep Clinic The Fillmore County Sheep PDC will be hosting a sheep clinic on July 16 at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds from 8-12. Bonus trips are out! - Apply by June 1 Again in 2018, livestock bonus trips will be awarded only for programming excellence. There will be no bonus trips offered for livestock quality. The number of bonus trips awarded will remain the same if quality denotes the awarding of a trip. Applications are available now. Apply for a livestock bonus trip Apply for a horse bonus trip 4-H livestock day camps are being offered in six locations - Deadline to register: June 8 The training agenda for all six camps will be the same. We will take an in-depth look at fitting and showmanship, animal health and hoof/foot care, nutrition and biosecurity in each of these species. We are excited to have the University of Minnesota s biosecurity education trailer at each site! The trailer will be staffed by Extension s poultry and swine teams, including Extension Poultry Educator Abby Neu, and Sarah Schieck and Diane DeWitt, Extension swine educators. They will work with the youth and families to better understand how diseases spread. Youth must identify one animal type to learn about during the day. The camp is focused on youth in grades six and up, but younger 4-H members with a parent/chaperone will be accepted. Camp will start with registration at 9:30 a.m. and program starting at 10 a.m. We will conclude the day at 4 p.m. Cost per registrant is $10 per person, and up to $40 per immediate family, which includes lunch and breaks. Livestock Quality Assurance Training New Options! New in 2018-4-H animal science members have options for livestock quality assurance training. All youth who would like to be able to participate as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry, rabbit, meat goat, dairy goat and lama must complete livestock quality assurance training requirements before the County Fair. In 2018, there will be two training options: 1. A three-hour, in-person workshop - Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E). This is the traditional training most youth are used to. There will be a training held in Fillmore County in June that will be free to
Fillmore County enrolled youth, date TBD. This training will be good for three years. If youth cannot make it to the June training but want the hands on training, this can be taken in any county. Many surrounding counties will be offering this training in April and May. There may be a small fee to take this training in another county and youth will need to register in advance. See the schedule of trainings throughout MN. 2. A one-hour online training - Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). There is a $12 charge per youth for this training. Each youth must take this individually. Once you have the certificate, please send a copy to Rebecca and Kristi. This training is good for one year. This training can be taken when the youth has time, but the certificate must be sent to the Extension Office on or before July 3 to show with full privileges. These certificates will not be accepted after July 13 and must be accompanied with the one time exemption form to show with full privileges. Weigh-in Dates for Goats/Sheep May 5, 9-11 am The Goat/Sheep weigh-in is scheduled for May 5 th from 9 am-11 am at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds in the big barn. Please make sure you arrive with plenty of time before the end of either weigh-in. For more information on what to do if you cannot make these mandatory weigh-in dates, please go review your options here in advance. Please be sure to bring your ID paperwork with you filled out. A letter has already been sent to all families enrolled in the sheep and goat projects in 4Honline. Enroll in 4-H, ID animals and register for fair! FairEntry will be used again this year to sign youth up for fair. It will open on May 16, after 4Honline closes, and will be open until June 15. The change this year is that we will be asking families with livestock to add the animals into the classes that the youth will show in. *Please make sure to register each child for every class they may show in. If you have 2 kids and 6 animals and you are not sure who is showing what yet, register each child for the appropriate class for each animal. This means that each child will have 6 classes they are registered for, even if they will only show in 3. The other 3 will be scratches. Animals can be switched between siblings until verification (weigh-in at the fair). If you have questions about this, please contact the Extension office. 2018 4-H Regional Summer Camp Early Bird Rate by May 1, 2018 The Minnesota 4-H Camping program develops leadership and responsibility skills for teen counselors, while providing a safe and fun opportunity for the campers through activities, which allow them to gain knowledge and develop social skills while meeting new friends. 4-H staff and high-school aged camp counselors are prepared and ready to deliver an exciting and safe camp for you! We are looking for a Foodstand Manager and 1-2 Assistant Manager(s). The largest time commitment will be the week of fair, July 17-21, with limited hours before and after fair. Pay for the Manager is $12.50/hour for up to 100 hours and pay for the Assistant Manager is $10.00/hour for up to 50 hours. Bachelor degree program with a focus in youth development, education, human development, agriculture or natural resources is strongly preferred. The completion of at least two years of college is preferred. 2018 4-H Market Livestock Auction at Fillmore County Fair Friday, July 20, 6 pm As you may have heard, there will be some changes to the 2018 4-H Market Livestock Auction at Fillmore County Fair. Here they are below for you to share with others.
The most important being that it will now be held on Friday, July 20 at 6 pm in the main show ring. Sign up deadline for the auction will be Tuesday, July 17 at 8 pm. The consequence of not signing up by 8 pm on Tuesday are as follows: The 4-Her would not be listed in the Auction program The 4-Her would sell animal at the end of their animal s species The 4-Her will lose 50% of auction premium (net check to 4-Her). They are the Late Bloomer Award, Friend of 4-H, Alumni, and Rookie of the Year. Please send your nominations, which should include who you are nominating, why they deserve this award, and a short essay about their accomplishments to Kristi at ruesi001@umn.edu by June 15, 2018. o Late Bloomer: This goes to a deserving volunteer that has done an exemplary job of supporting the 4H program at the club or county level, or beyond. This person also was not a 4H member as a youth, but bloomed later and has been a great asset to 4H in there adult life. o Friend of 4H: This can be a business, a person, a family, or group that has supported 4H through the years in many different aspects. o Alumni: This award has the same qualifications as the Late Bloomer Award, but is given to someone who was 4H member as youth. o Rookie of the Year: This award is given to an adult volunteer who has really stepped up and pitched in the short time they have been a volunteer. Crow Wing Poultry Fun Show May 19 th The Crow Wing County Poultry Club would like to invite you to take part in their 3rd Annual 4-H Poultry Fun Show. The show will take place on Saturday, May 19th at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds in Brainerd with registration starting at 9 am. This is a great opportunity to practice showing all ages and breeds of birds!. Shows and Competitions MN Horse Expo April 27-29, 2018 The Minnesota Horse Expo holds a 4-H Horse Tack Swap at this event and this is the LARGEST fundraiser for the Minnesota 4-H horse project! It is IMPORTANT that we get 4-H families to volunteer to help at this event. It is a great service project and you only have to volunteer to work a shift. There are MANY shifts still open. This money is used to provide ALL of the horse events across the state. It supports the horse show, Winter Round Up, training new horse judges, the county grant program, miniature horse, western heritage, drill team and MANY others! Without this money your fees would go up or some of these events would not be able to happen! Winona County 4-H Dariy Project Educational Workshop May 12th The Winona County Dairy PDC is hosting this workshop at Keifland Holsteins Chad & Kendra Keifer Farm located at 26234 County Road 33 in Utica, Minn. The workshop will cover: Animal ID Requirements, Animal Selection, Showmanship and Clipping. It is free to attend, but participants are asked to sign up by calling the Winona County Extension Office at 507-457- 6440 or emailing Kim Wingert at winge109@umn.edu with their name and years in the Dairy Project so the instructors have an idea of the skill levels of their audience. Dairy Project Educational Workshop. The 64th Annual Central Minnesota Youth Dairy Day Show June 15th For the past several years, the Stearns County Holstein Club has been in charge of putting on the Central Minnesota Youth Dairy Day Show that was once promoted by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce. This year once again the club will be hosting the event at the Sauk Centre Fairgrounds on Friday, June 15 th starting at 10:00 am. We will be holding a raffle for all participants for a show aged calf. In addition to the calf, we will also be raffling off several other prizes. Details on these prizes along with registration forms and rules will follow in the upcoming months. This show is NOT limited to 4-H and FFA members however; we do follow 4-H show rules. UMR Campus Immersion: Sunday, May 20 start at 2 pm - Monday, May 21 end with dinner program Are you interested in a career in the field of health sciences? If you are currently in 8-11th grade, consider joining us for a jam packed 2 days at the University of Minnesota Rochester Campus from May 20-21st. Youth will experience the campus lifestyle and stay in UMR campus dorms overnight. There will be fun challenges, exciting hands-on activities related to health science and higher education, a tour of the UMR campus, and include a segment of time at the Mayo Clinic. Registration for YELLO! (Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Outload!) Due by May 7 YELLO will take place June 12-15 in the 4-H building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Registration is open until Monday, May 7. The cost is $250 per person and includes lodging, meals, field trips, a service project and conference materials. YELLO! is open to students who have just completed grade 6 through one year past high school. The Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors have been working diligently to plan an inspiring program. Attendees will learn and lead while exploring the Twin Cities community. Dozens of educational opportunities will be provided for youth to learn more about 4-H, develop stronger leadership skills and become more civically engaged members of the community. Minnesota 4-H Livestock Judging Camp June 20-22 Are you a 4-H youth who wants to learn about livestock evaluation and selection? Do you want to be better at expressing yourself when talking about your livestock projects? We encourage you to be a part of the 2018 Minnesota 4-H Livestock Judging Camp. This camp will be presented by the University of Minnesota Livestock Judging Team and Coach Kyle Rozeboom. It's a perfect fit for youth who are on livestock judging teams or would like to learn more about animal conformation and selection. June 20-22 University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus Cost: $130 per person.
