Penshurst vs Ramsgate Round 9 Date 4/6/2011 We had a full squad of Penshurst volunteers guiding all of the games on the weekend. With Ramsgate also offering their volunteers this led to a very well organised and executed series of drills and games the best this season. My thanks and gratitude in particular to Tim Hanlen who was on duty as usual directing the Junior Auskick game. This was despite son Anthony being laid low with a chest infection and unable to be at OLDS Park. We are fortunate to have such a willing group of volunteers in 2011 it s certainly appreciated by Allan and myself and all of our Auskickers as well. Junior Auskick There were some tender moments in the goal square from 2 of our Ramsgate opposition players Anthony and Ryan on Saturday. Soft whispers about their home readers amused the crowd at the back of the goal square. A small giggle became a raucous laugh when a third player joined them with a solemn confession that he had just cheated. The group hug that followed was just precious to witness. It underlines the layer of innocence, which so attracts these games to onlookers and parents. Out on the ground umpire Kameron was having trouble throwing the ball high enough to keep it above pint- sized heads at the ball ups. Up in attack Anthony A was swapping notes with his day- care friend Sammy (Ramsgate) about what will be on the day- care agenda this coming week. A moment later they were jolted out of their conversation when the ball arrived in their zone. A head clash between Anthony A and another Ramsgate player ensued as they suddenly focussed on the ball. This required parent cuddles all round to fix the injuries. Then a big hug for each other and the game went on. Next followed a magnificent team effort goal Joshua M and Callum B combined brilliantly to save a goal in defence. Then in a chain of relayed kicks - first to Anthony A who passed truly to Aaron G then back to Anthony A and on to Elijah M who, guided professionally by Graicey kicked the major. It is very evident that this team continues to become much more football savvy as the season progresses. Senior Auskick
Game 1 There was a blitzkrieg of goals from our Penshurst team this week, mostly courtesy of the golden boot of Cooper C. Cooper s instinct for goals is outstanding and he is regularly the bane of opposition teams. For the second week running Josh I and Luca I put in a searing performance dominating their zones and setting up their team- mates regularly. Jarrod C is always notorious for his attack on the ball and Saturday was certainly no exception. Timothy O was a little crowded out in his zone with a lop sided number of teammates vying for the ball. However he still acquitted himself capably with his well- known skills coming to the fore several times. However perhaps the highlight of this game was the virtual wall of defence erected by Matthew M and Adam B. These two were impenetrable, together repelling opposition attack time after time. Matthew M scooped the Auskick Star of the Week award while Adam B gained some valuable experience by playing at the shoulder of such an accomplished Senior Auskicker. Game 2 This was a very evenly matched game against Ramsgate with the ball flowing back and forth, giving every player a chance at stardom. The Star of the Day was Rory L, who took sensational mark after sensational mark. It didn t matter where he played on the field, Back, Centre or Forward, Rory was ready to catch any kick that came his way! Adam Kostakis and Harry Mullen got into the action, having some fabulous kicks at goal and chasing down any loose balls. Andrew Firmstone kicked a successful goal from way out and was well supported from cheers and barks from his supporters on the sideline. Nick Sullivan and Jackson Comber ran circles around the Ramsgate opposition, sending the ball down to our forwards with kicks that almost jumped the centre third. Orlando Smith also played his heart out both in kicking for goals and defence as well. When in the backs he checked to see that the goal posts were sturdy enough to handle the action coming its way good to have such quality control out on the field! All players had the chance to kick for goal and all walked away as winners.
Penshurst U9s VS Ramsgate Round 9 Date: 4 June 2011 It was a glorious day for footy as our U9s took on Ramsgate on Olds 2. Ramsgate had plenty of youngsters in development which made it look like a sea of blue and gold as we agreed to them having a few more on the field. Regardless of the numbers our young Panthers continued to show the skills that have earned them a reputation as a formidable side in 2011. There was plenty of ball at both ends of the ground in a well matched game that challenged the boys and girls through all quarters. Ryan and Lachlan S continue to show plenty of passion for the game. Lachlan M enjoyed a return after an overseas sojourn. Bradley continues to show us his eye for a good mark is not luck. The continued team work is what makes a difference and there was plenty on show again with clever work by Mia, Baily, Luke Arran and others. Remember practice makes a difference so if your ball has got no air in it get some and start kicking, handballing, bouncing and marking at home or down the park with your preferred training buddy! Thanks to Mark R for on- field coaching and support. Next weekend we are down to Heathcote so pack a jumper! Penshurst Under 11 VS Ramsgate Round 9 Date 04/06/2011 Our long run of home games continues and the 11 s should know every blade of grass on Olds 2 by now, this week hosting Ramsgate who are one of the stronger teams in the competition. This week we also had the novel opportunity to play full- size footy at 18 a- side. The game started with Matt K getting heavily involved around the rucks and Georgia and Maurice showing courage to win some key possessions. Zac took a blow in the chops and came off under the blood rule and Ramsgate seized the opportunity to dominate at the ball ups, snaring 2 late goals. Score at ¼ time: Penshurst 0-0- 0 VS 2-2- 14 Ramsgate built a lot of their momentum from their domination at the clearances and even though we seemed to win the tap, Ramsgate read the ball much better and were a lot harder at it. Kurt had a great game and managed to grab some key possessions and Joel did well when isolated and outnumbered by the opposition. Kyle was rewarded for his perseverance with a late goal. Score at ½ time: Penshurst 1-0- 6 VS 4-4- 28
Liam was given the tagging role in marking up on Ramsgate s key ball player and did well to thwart the Swans Academy player. In his best game of the season Chris was heavily involved and took some decisive marks. Mitchell was given the point role at full forward and was rewarded for his positional play with a penalty in the goal mouth, which he calmly slotted through. Score at ¾ time: Penshurst 2-0- 12 VS 6-5- 41 Coach Widders donned the cloth and preached his belief in the team at the final break, and they didn t let him down. Kristian, Willem and Luke defended doggedly to keep Ramsgate to only one goal in the 4 th, and the team really lifted on the back of a hard fought Captains goal from Zac. Final Score: Penshurst 3-0- 18 defeated by Ramsgate 7-6- 48 In a game against a team that spoilt with a number of skilled and very athletic kids, we did well to almost match our result from round 3 against them. The mark count for the Panthers in this match was only around 10 versus approximately 30 for Ramsgate generally reflecting their greater desire and confidence to go up for the ball. AFL footy is all about confidence and desire, and we need to put that into practice this weekend against Heathcote. Best Players: Zac bounced back from an early injury to have a great captain s game and Kyle also made his mark on the game. Canteen Awards: Zac and Mark Penshurst U12s VS Ramsgate Round 8 Date: 4 June 2011 After a comfortable win against Ramsgate earlier in the season it was a tougher match at Olds Park last weekend. It was virtually scoreless in the first quarter before a Ramsgate goal in the second and third saw them lead by just 2 goals into the final quarter. Earlier highlights were a great tackle from Gianluca for ball, excellent marks under pressure from Bradley. Everyone was going in hard and 50 gamer Lachlan R needed some rest after a head clash but was soon back into the game. After the boys revved themselves up in the final break they came out strong and it was our quarter in the last. The struggle was intense and took its toll with Willem coming off with a suspected fracture in his hand. The emphasis on fitness has paid off and there was still wind left in the team until the final siren. Gianluca scored early in the quarter and then it was a series of points. The tension in the crowd was intense and some could hardly bear to watch. Cameron hit the post for another point in a game where every point felt like a goal. Ramsgate were feverish in defence to the final seconds when Gianluca scored a point from a penalty kick inside 50 that went over the line as the siren blew!! Once we all started to breath again we appreciated what a good game this was.
Final Score: Penshurst 1-8- 14 drew with Bankstown 2-2- 14 Well Done boys! After a sluggish game last week we did a few different things during the week to freshen the team up. After a hard fought first quarter the midfield machine got rolling and the boys got back to the game plan of run and carry that has served us so well this season. The whole team ran and spread playing olds1 to perfection and exposing Ramsgate s lack of depth around the ground. With a BOG performance from L Judd and the much improved performances of R McMahon and little Jezza we kicked and hand passed with great efficiency wide out of defense then direct to space in the forward line where Shannon and Aaron put on a clinic. All in all a great team performance and we are only a great team when we bring others into the game. We have a great balance all over the ground and it is great to see that every week anyone of our 28 players could be best afield! Let's get down to training boys and continue this well drilled performance with polish on the track Go Panthers!! Whilst we ended up being clearly outgunned on the scoreboard, this was our best game of the season in terms of endeavour and commitment to both teammates and the. Zane and Anwar had their best games so far. Max and Jack showed the intensity levels needed to improve. Anthony was left one- out in the forward fifty in the second quarter which led to a couple of possessions and shots at goal. Our second half was solid and we fought it out until the end. Louie scored his first goal of the season. Thanks again to our merry band of under 13s, Kam, Ewan, Trent. Keep it up boys, each week a little better and the improvement is evident. Congratulations to Marcus, Dion, Matthew, Anthony and Jack in being nominated for the regional under 14s development squad later this month. Congratulations also to Dion for playing his 50th game for the mighty Panthers Thanks to Susan for steeping in this week to give Kirsten a well deserved break.
