FISH BITES The Marlins continue the first of two season-long 10-game homestands tonight with the first of three against the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 p.m. RHP Edinson Volquez (0-7, 4.82), who is looking to snap a seven-game slide to begin the season, has gone 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA in seven prior starts against the Phillies. Philadelphia is countering with RHP Jeremy Hellickson (5-2, 4.28), who in 11 previous starts against the Fish has posted a 4-2 record and 2.61 ERA. Tonight's ceremonial first pitches are being thrown out by US Air Force Major General Michael T. Plehn, Dolphins' linebacker Kiko Alonso, and Patrick Currie, and the national anthem is being performed by US Army SFC Mari Koontz. The first 10,000 fans through the gates on this Memorial Day will receive a Marlins Tote Bag, presented by Major League Baseball. Miami's current homestand began with the Fish taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels and will continue after this series with a four-game set against Arizona. The Marlins returned home from their most recent road trip last Thursday, going 2-4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers (1-3) and Oakland Athletics (1-1). YESTERDAY VS. ANGELS The Marlins earned their first series win since April 21-23 at San Diego with a 9-2 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Giancarlo Stanton homered in the first inning, his 13th of the season, to give the Fish an early 1-0 advantage. The lead held until the fourth when the Angels scored twice to go up 2-1. In the fifth, an Ichiro Suzuki pinch-hit single scored Derek Dietrich, who led off the frame with a double. JT Riddle followed with a two-run home run, his third of the season, to put Miami up 4-2. The Marlins added two more runs in the sixth and three in the eighth to round out the scoring. Stanton paced the offense with a 3x5 afternoon, while Riddle and Marcell Ozuna added two hits apiece. José Ureña (3-2) earned the win, limiting the Angels to two runs on three hits and six walks, with a career-high seven strikeouts, over 5.0 innings. BALLS AND STRIKES Last night, José Ureña struck out seven and walked six over his 5.0 innings of work. He became the second Marlins starter this season to record 6+ walks and 7+ strikeouts in 5.0-or-fewer innings. Edinson Volquez walked eight and struck out nine in 4.1 innings on May 2 vs. Tampa Bay. Only two other times has it happened in Club history: Josh Beckett on September 23, 2004 vs. Philadelphia (5.0 ip, 6 bb, 7 so) and Ryan Dempster on August 20, 1999 vs. Houston (3.1 ip, 7 bb, 8 so). TWO-TIMING With its 9-2 win over the Angels yesterday, the Marlins improved their record to 8-0 when allowing two-or-fewer runs. The Washington Nationals own the best record when limiting opponents to two-or-less runs, going 14-0. They are followed by Atlanta (9-0), San Diego (9-0), and Miami. - Stats LLC AGAINST THE PHILLIES This series is the first for the Phillies at Marlins Park this season. The two teams met in Philadelphia from April 26-27, with the Marlins dropping two games after the opener of the three-game set was rained out. That game has been rescheduled for an August 22 doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. Miami went 9-10 against the Phillies in 2016, which included a 4-5 mark in Miami. The Fish own a 102-96 record against the Phils in South Florida (24-22 at Marlins Park), yet trail the all-time series 179-220. NOT THE STREAK TO BEAT Edinson Volquez has started his Marlins career with seven consecutive losses, marking the longest single-season skid of his career. For streaks spanning multiple seasons, his current run of eight losses, dating back to September 15, 2016, is also a career long. His seven-game slide to open the season is tied with Joe Fontenot (1998) for the longest such streak to open a season in Marlins' history. Part of the reason for his slide is that he has the second-lowest run support average (2.31) among Major League starting pitchers, in front of only Kansas City's Jason Hammel (2.12). GOING DEEP Miami has a better chance of winning when its starter goes deeper into games. So far this season, when a Marlins starting pitcher works 5.1-or-more innings (24 times), the team is 11-13, with the rotation owning a 7-8 record and 3.22 ERA (142.2 ip/51 er). When a Marlins starter fails to make it beyond 5.0 innings pitched (also 24 times), Miami is just 7-17, with a rotation record of 4-13 and a 7.74 (102.1/88) ERA. G2 Since moving to the second spot in the batting order on May 23, Giancarlo Stanton has hit at a.417 clip (10x24) with two home runs and four RBI. In those five games he has recorded three three-hit efforts to give him seven on the season. His seven three-hit games are tied with Dee Gordon, Jean Segura and Ryan Zimmerman for the most in the Majors. THE THREE AMIGOS The trio of Justin Bour (33), Marcell Ozuna (35) and Giancarlo Stanton (34) have combined to drive in 102 runs on the season. They are one of just five trios in Baseball to have 102+ combined RBI. The Rockies' group of Charlie Blackmon (45), Mark Reynolds (43) and Nolan Arenado (34) have combined for 122. They are followed by Washington's Bryce Harper (41), Ryan Zimmerman (39) and Daniel Murphy (33) with 113; Arizona's Jake Lamb (43), Paul Goldschmidt (38) and Yasmany Tomas (31) with 112; and Cincinnati's Adam Duvall (43), Joey Votto (39) and Eugenio Suarez (30) with 112. - Stats LLC ADVANTAGE MIAMI The Marlins have outslugged their opponents in terms of home runs at Marlins Park, clubbing 29 while allowing 23. Since moving into Marlins Park, the Fish have homered more than their opponent over the course of a single season just once. In 2014, Miami hit 59, while visiting teams hit 45.
