Dear Ladies, We at the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle are looking forward to welcoming you to Helsinki next week! Yle s core values are reliability, independence and respect for everyone. One of Yle s strategic choices is to foster a sense of community by listening to, involving and bringing different people together. We at Yle aim to produce content that reflects the diversity of Finnish society and the everyday lives of different people through content that reflects them, their experiences and their lives. A natural part of this is promoting gender equality in the media and throughout society at large. The fifth WEM meeting will focus on women and sport. Sport is a sector where gender parity still falls short; women are significantly under-represented in management, administration and coaching. Especially in decision-making and leadership positions, there are still few women. Female athletes have fewer opportunities of turning professional and they earn only a fraction of what their male colleagues earn. All this also affects sports coverage, which is often male-dominated. This is why we invite you to join us in discussing why this is an issue and what can be done to remedy it. As public service media we have a role to play and we have already tested a few ideas! We are proud to offer you a programme that brings together journalists and leaders in the sports sector to discuss issues concerning women and sport. On Wednesday night we ourselves will get active at the garden oasis Allas Sea Pool in the heart of Helsinki. Enjoy the outdoor pools and saunas or disco dancing! The keynote address will be given by Tuija Brax, Secretary General of the Finnish Heart Association and a former member of parliament. Afterwards there will be the opportunity to relax with some cocktails and get to know your colleagues from around Europe.
On Thursday, we will gather at the Niemi Centre at Hartwall Arena, where we will have the privilege to listen to a keynote address from Tarja Halonen, so far the only woman to have been elected President of Finland. She is internationally acknowledged for her continuous contributions to gender equality and sustainable development. After the president s speech we will hear from the female athletes themselves. In a moderated panel discussion, former top athletes will share their experiences and views. The Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Culture & Education will also have a say. Then we will move on to a more interactive session concentrating on the role of PSM. You will hear about the approaches adopted in Sweden and Finland and have the opportunity to enlighten us on the situation in your own organizations and countries. On Friday afternoon we will visit the Yle Olympic Games studios built exclusively for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. For more detailed information on the timetable and speakers, please consult the attached programme. We look forward to seeing you in Helsinki! With best regards, Gunilla Ohls Director, HR, Communications & Strategy
