RUGBY UNION: SIX NATIONS - WALES V FRANCE Saturday, March 17, BBC One Wales, 2pm Wales host France for their final match of the 2012 Six Nations tournament at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff - the first time the teams have met since their Rugby World Cup semi-final last autumn. John Inverdale presents live coverage on BBC One Wales in Rugby Union: Six Nations - Wales v France from 2pm. Shane Williams, Jeremy Guscott and Thomas Castaignede join John in the studio with expert analysis on the game and commentary from Eddie Butler and Jonathan Davies. BBC Cymru Wales is also supplying live coverage to S4C in Rygbi Rhyngwladol introduced by Gareth Roberts with guests Gareth Edwards and Dafydd Jones. Commentary is from Huw Llywelyn Davies and Gwyn Jones and analysis is from Brynmor Williams, with Dot Davies reporting from pitch-side and interviewing some well-known faces as they arrive at the ground. UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS Sunday, March 18, BBC One Wales, 9pm When Mr Pritchard receives an invitation to act as servants representative for the up and coming Servants Ball, he meets fellow representative Miss Whisset and a surprising courtship ensues. As the friendship deepens an engagement seems imminent Upstairs, the cracks in the Hollands marriage deepen and Lady Agnes decides to take some time away from 165 Eaton Place. His wife s absence throws Sir Hallam into turmoil and he becomes increasingly reckless, unaware that his misdemeanours are becoming more and more evident to those around him. But when Sir Hallam is confronted with the reality of his behaviour he begins to question whether his actions have had more sinister consequences. THE STORY OF WALES: A NEW BEGINNING Monday, March 19, BBC One Wales, 9pm bbc.co.uk/storyofwales Despite being written off as ignorant peasants and sinners who use a useless language in the notorious 1847 Blue Books reports, the Welsh are about to become world beaters as King Coal makes its presence felt, Huw Edwards reveals in The Story of Wales. Tests reveal Welsh coal burns brightest and longest - and the race is on to discover new sources of it. The almost biblical tale of workers toiling for David Davies for no wages till on the seventh day they strike a massive seam at Ton Pentre sets the scene for a huge migration to the valleys as coal owners sink shafts and a massive workforce follows. In north Wales, slate is having the same effect, with new wealth transforming towns with piers and grand buildings. But appalling working conditions and low wages for the workers mean civil unrest is never far from the surface. A manifesto, The Miners Next Step, is published, calling for a seven hour day and a minimum wage. Most families remain in desperate poverty, and when the coal price collapses and pits are closed the mass migration reverses with 250,000 people moving out of Wales in the 1930s. Jenny Walford
SWANSEA: LIVING ON THE STREETS Monday, March 19, BBC One Wales, 10.35pm The final episode of this hard-hitting documentary series on homelessness in Wales reveals what Christmas is like for those for whom the season of goodwill is anything but, living on Swansea s streets. Stevie battles to get off drugs with nowhere to go over Christmas, there s no room at the inn for those competing for Swansea s one and only emergency bed and, with no crib for a bed, Paul wakes up on Christmas Day under a disused railway. BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES Thursday, March 22, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, 7.30pm Friday, March 23, Prichard Jones Hall, Bangor, 7.30pm bbc.co.uk/now Violinist Vilde Frang joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in March for their Spring tour, which starts with visits to Aberystwyth and Bangor. The 25-year-old Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang last visited the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in 2010, performing Sibelius s Violin Concerto with conductor Thomas Søndergård. For this tour she will be performing Tchaikovsky s Violin Concerto in Aberystwyth and Bruch s Violin Concerto No 1 in Bangor. The Orchestra, conducted by Jac van Steen, will be taking two programmes of music with them on tour. In Aberystwyth, the audiences will be treated to two short symphonies - Prokofiev s Symphony No 1, Classical, and Haydn s Symphony No 104, London. In Bangor, the Orchestra will be performing Tchaikovsky s dramatic Hamlet, alongside Dvořák s Symphony No 7. Three Welsh regions remain in the race for a place in the Pro 12 play-offs and tonight 2010 league champions, Ospreys are in Dublin to face Leinster - European Cup holders and 2011 Pro 12 finalists. Ross Harries presents live coverage in Scrum V Live: Leinster v Ospreys on BBC Two Wales from 7pm. Ross is joined in the studio by the Wales legend Martyn Williams. Commentary is from Gareth Charles with Phil Steele pitch-side. Sioned discovers that it was actually him who stole Denzil s gun in order to scare Eileen into selling him the farm. Just as Eileen is about to sign the deeds of Penrhewl over, Sioned finds the gun and is intent on making Eifion pay. She clearly isn t thinking straight and with a gun lying around, who knows what will happen? Sheryl s feelings are all over the place as she wonders whether she and Kevin should make a go of things again. It becomes apparent that her heart belongs to another when Gethin returns to the village and begs for her forgiveness. But she cannot get over Gethin s lies and she finds comfort in the arms of another member of the family. Things are looking up for Ffion; she s keeping off the alcohol and she has a doting father for her unborn child. But by the end of the week, she begins to bleed and hits the bottle, convinced that she s lost yet another child. Meleri Thomas
