FISH BITES Miami continues its second homestand of the season, a seven-game set, with the first of four against the Washington Nationals tonight at 7:10 p.m. RHP José Fernández is making his seventh career start against Washington, going 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA. Fernández will be going up against RHP Tanner Roark, who is making his eighth career start and 14 th appearance, his second start against the Fish in 2016. Roark has posted a lifetime mark of 2-5 with one save and a 3.61 ERA. The current homestand began with Miami dropping three straight to the Atlanta Braves. Tonight's national anthem is being performed by the Master's Academy Chorus. Tonight is a South Florida Heroes Monday, where all active and retired military personnel, veterans, first responders, military civilians and their spouses and children (up to 4 family members) can take advantage of complimentary tickets for any Monday game. Eligible participants must present a valid ID at the Marlins Park East Ticket Office to take advantage of the promotion. Following this series with the Nationals, Miami will head back out on the road for a nine-game road swing, traveling to San Francisco (April 22-24), Los Angeles (April 25-28) and Milwaukee (April 29-May 1). YESTERDAY vs. ATLANTA Even after falling behind 4-0 after one inning of play, the Marlins bounced back to force an extra frame in a 10-inning, 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Through the first five innings, Miami had just one hit, a fourth-inning single from Martín Prado. Atlanta forced another run across in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead before the Fish loaded the bases and pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Dee Gordon moved Miami to within one in the seventh, driving in a run on a groundout to second, and Ichiro Suzuki plated the game-tying run with a two-out RBI single to left in the ninth. Jeff Mathis started behind the plate and went 2x4 with two runs scored and a double, while Ichiro went 2x2 after coming off the bench in the sixth. Jarred Cosart made the start, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings. Edwin Jackson (0-1) was handed the loss after allowing the gamewinning run in the 10 th. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT In six career starts against Washington, José Fernández has gone 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA (36.2 ip/4 er) and.164 average against, recording the lowest ERA and opponents average of any active Major League starter against the Nationals (min. 5 starts). Zack Greinke owns the second-lowest ERA at 1.49 (42.1/7), while Clayton Kershaw has the secondlowest average against at.187. BEST AT HOME Despite having his 17-game home winning streak snapped in his last start at Marlins Park, José Fernández's.944 (17-1) winning percentage at Marlins Park is the best home winning percentage of any pitcher since 1916 (min. 25 starts). Additionally, his 1.61 ERA and.182 opponents average also rank as the best in Major League Baseball in that same time frame. - Stats LLC MAKING HISTORY Ichiro Suzuki, who entered yesterday's game in center field as part of a double-switch in the sixth inning, singled in his first plate appearance of the afternoon and promptly stole second base, marking the 499 th stolen base of his illustrious career. With one more he will be one of just eight players in Major League history to reach 500 career steals and 2,900 -plus hits, joining Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Paul Molitor, Eddie Collins, Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock and Barry Bonds. - Elias CLIMBING THE LADDER With his two hits yesterday, Ichiro Suzuki moved to within four hits of tying Frank Robinson (2,943) for 33 rd on the MLB all-time hits list. Ichiro is batting.444 (4x9) on the season and is just 61 hits from 3,000. THIS INFIELD IS NOT JUST DEFENSE Miami's infielders are producing a combined.304 batting average, highest among all National League infields and second in Major League Baseball behind just Detroit (.318). The Marlins regulars are led by Martín Prado, who has been hitting at a.342 clip (13x38), followed by Dee Gordon (.300; 15x50) and Justin Bour (.300; 9x30). - Stats LLC GETTING HIS STEPS IN Christian Yelich has reached base safely via hit or walk in each of his 10 games played this season.
