Term 1, 2011 WELCOME Well, 2011 got off to a bumpy start with various natural disasters and disruptions. Our thoughts go out to everyone in Christchurch, particularly our Special Olympics athletes affected by the seismic rumbles. It has been great to welcome Christchurch students to our athletics events, who have moved north temporarily. In this issue: 1 Welcome/Introduction/Update Details 2 Wellington/Manawatu/Wanganui 3 Manawatu/Wanganui 4 Taranaki/World Games 5 Transition/Special Olympics Clubs 6 Events calendar and contact details Introduction Update Your Contact Details With the start of a new term, if you have had a change of staff and/or responsibilities please provide us with the new contact person s details for your school as soon as possible. Hi there, my name is Kim Foon I am the new regional sports coordinator taking over from Jessica Baldwin. I look after the Greater Wellington region, Kapiti, Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay areas. WELLINGTON CSW AWD Athletics On the 4 th of March, The AWD Athletics event was held at Newtown Park. The event attracted 195 athletes from 15 schools on the day. The event was a huge success and a great start to AWD sports in the Wellington region. CSW Regional Athletics Champs incl. AWD Newtown Park on the 16 th of March bought us another successful event for AWD Athletics with many of these athletes qualifying for the North Islands schools competition. Well Done! MANAWATU / WANGANUI AWD Athletics 22 February, 2011 The Community Athletic Track at Massey University was the venue for the AWD athletics event in Manawatu, held early this term. Nearly 80 students from five schools competed in track and field. It was great to welcome some new students to the programme! A huge thank you goes out to the gentlemen from Manawatu Masters Athletics, as well as George McConachy and his fantastic sports students from Freyberg High School. They did a brilliant job of officiating and running the event on the day. Very much appreciated! Manawatu Secondary Schools Athletics including AWD 19 March, 2011 Boys track event AWD Students preparing for the 100m dash Softball throw This year, 13 students from Awatapu High School, Freyberg High School and Tararua College attended, competing in the 100m, 200, and 400m dash; the discus, long jump, shot put and Javelin field events. Some of these students have been doing extra training with the Manawatu Masters Athletics Club and Manawatu Special Olympics. North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Hamilton, 2-3 April. Eight Manawatu students competed in the North Island event representing the region in a range of track and field events. Relay 3

Taranaki AWD Athletics The day dawned grey, cloudy and drizzly, but cleared just in time for the competition to begin! TET Stadium, Inglewood, was a great facility and a special thank you to Lisa McCready (TET Athletics Taranaki) and Kelvin Wackrow and his team from the local athletics club, for their support and volunteering at the event. It s great to have such strong support from the local association. They were definitely impressed with the performances of our athletes. Just two months to go until the World Summer Games Special Olympics New Zealand is sending a team of 36 athletes to represent their country at the World Summer Games, Athens, Greece, between 25 June and 4 July, 2011. They will be joining 7.500 Special Olympics athletes from 185 countries, from all ability levels, who will compete in 21 Olympic-type sports. 16 athletes from the lower North Island athletes have been training hard and are looking forward to a trip of a lifetime. We would like to wish them all the best of luck and are sure they will have an experience of a lifetime! Transition It is pleasing to see so many students transitioning to their local Special Olympics Club. Students can transition while still at school. They then can enjoy the best of two worlds the Schools Programme, held during school hours, and their Club Programme with weeknight trainings and some weekend competitions. We encourage you to mention to both your students and their parents the opportunities Special Olympics can provide don t forget our program offers more than just sport trainings and competitions. There is also health, fitness, social and emotional benefitted through friendships, networks and support. Please ask Kim or Julia for copies of our transition brochure to provide parents with at students IEPs.
