2nd FINNISH MASTERS OPEN Helsinki, August 17 19, 2018 Sami Elopuro, Finland #6 in the world in 1992 squash.fi
Dear Masters! Last year we organized the 1st Meltron Finnish Masters Open (MFMO) in Helsinki and we hoped it would be a beginning of a new squash tradition in Finland. Now, a few days before the 2nd MFMO, we can say, the tradition is still short, but we have promising perspectives to the future. This time we have 40 players more, in total 118. This is a great number of players, for what I would like to thank all participants. It is a strong confirmation to us, MFMO organizing team is on the right track. It seems to be so, squash, summer and Helsinki go very well together. Year 2018 is a special one to us in Finland, as squash will have its 50 years anniversary in November. During all these years Finnish squash has had its ups and downs. The 80ties was a kind of golden decade, as squash venues were built everywhere and we had probably more than 100 000 people playing actively squash. In the 90ties Finnish players started winning titles, both in professional PSA-tournaments and in junior world and European championships. In 1992 Sami Elopuro achieved so far the highest men PSA-ranking (6th) of a Finnish squash player. His photo you can also find in this year s MFMO poster. After the recession of Finnish squash in few years, our sport has started recovering again and a few new venues and courts have been built. Some of us dare to talk about a renaissance of squash. We all hope, it will get true. Currently we are heading to a new season. MFMO makes a very visible start in Finnish squash scene, as it will be one of the biggest events this season. It is great to see, MFMO is also a result of a cooperation between younger and older squash generation. There are many volunteers, both below 20, older than 70 and many between, who makes this tournament possible. I would like to thank the whole organization team and especially the local club Salmisaaren Sisu for their excellent performance. They have once again done a great job, when preparing the 2nd MFMO. Nevertheless, we know, we can do it even better. Therefore, continuous improvement is one of the core values in MFMO organization team. So, if you have any new ideas for the future, please do not hesitate to contact us. I would like to wish to all players a successful tournament, enjoyable moments and a nice stay in Helsinki.
