Ramsey Summer Fun & Learning Classes 2 Summer Youth Programs at Ramsey Middle School & Washburn High How to Register You can register online at www.mplscommunityed.com, by calling 612.668.3450, or use the registration form in this brochure to register by mail. All registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up early to ensure your place. Class fees include costs of supplies and materials unless otherwise specified. Class Logistics Classes in this brochure are held at Ramsey Middle School, 1 W. 49th St., and Washburn High School, 201 W. 49th St., Minneapolis, MN 55406 Most classes are for children entering first through eighth grades in Fall of 2015. Grades indicated in the course descriptions refer to the grade the child will enter in Fall 2015. Children entering kindergarten this Fall (2015) are not eligible to attend classes. Summer Fun & Learning classes are offered mornings from 9 am-12 pm and afternoons from 12:30-3:30 pm Monday through Thursday. Classes begin the week of June 15. There will be a 30-minute supervised lunch for students attending both morning and afternoon classes in the same week. Cancelations & Refunds If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be granted. Participants who drop out of a class at least three business days in advance of the start date will receive a full refund minus a $10/class processing fee. No Transportation Community Education does not provide transportation to summer classes at Ramsey or Washburn or transportation between summer sites. Questions? Learn to make a breakfast fit for a king: Veggie hash, eggs every way, pancakes, muffins, breads, fruit salads and yogurt from scratch! Work with recipes that you can take with you as you wow your family and friends with terrific breakfasts. Please your palate and practice having fun in the kitchen! 9 am-12 pm $75 In addition to Super Summer activities at Ramsey, we are also offering a Strength & Conditioning Camp for Grades 9-12 at Washburn. See the back page of this brochure for more details.

Build A World This camp is perfect for your avid reader and writer. We ll explore some of our favorite fantasies and how those authors created the worlds that sucked us in. Students will leave the class with a world portfolio, complete with short stories, character sketches, maps, recipes, and costumes. The final day we ll host a World Fair to share our brand new universes. Magic School Bus (Grades 1-2) In this camp, we will explore the most exciting parts of nature with the most exciting teacher out there Miss Frizzle! We ll use hands-on experiments, field trips, and the book series to learn about everything from rain gardens to rabbits while getting our hands dirty outdoors. Our neighborhood will be the classroom to make observations and test theories about the weather, bugs, plants, and taking care of our environment. Washburn Musical Theatre Camp (Grades 6-9) Step up to the stage in this camp where you will sing and dance your way to a showcase performance for your friends and family. This musical review will take you on a journey through the songs of your favorite movies and shows. Camp time will be spent learning new songs, practicing dance steps, and building confidence for performing. Offered in collaboration with Washburn High School Theatre. 9:00 am-3:30 pm $125 Week Two June 22-25, Mon-Thu See Week 1 for class description. New Basketball Camp (Grades 5-8) This day camp is perfect for boys and girls that want to have fun and learn the fundamentals of the game. Participants will learn basketball skills, which include dribbling, proper shooting form, passing and defensive concepts. The camp will be filled with games and competition to ensure the fun in fundamentals. All levels of players are welcome. Offered in collaboration with Washburn High School Athletics. 9 am-12 pm $85 Cheerleading Camp (Grades 6-9) Join the Washburn Varsity Cheerleading Team for a week filled with fun and spirit. Spend the day learning cheers, chants, jumps and stunts with the current cheer team. All participants will be eligible to cheer at Homecoming 2015 during the fall. Those interested in cheering for football season (going into 9th grade) will have an opportunity to try out for the Washburn team. 9 am-12 pm $85 Creative Writing in Nature (Grades 6-8) Take your love of stories to the great outdoors with this nature-focused class. Students receive a babysitter s pack that includes a handbook, CD that includes marketing ideas, ways to organize information to take to jobs, and other activities. Participants will also receive a certificate of completion and learn games and activities that will get them ready to babysit. Note: This class runs Monday through Wednesday. 1:00-3:00 pm $75 World Travelers (Grades 1-2) Travel the world while staying in Minneapolis! Through games, songs, and art we ll explore the culture of countries around the world. Have you wanted to learn a new language and get to know more about the people that make up this little planet we call home? This camp will be your chance to see the world! Ramsey Summer Fun & Learning Classes 4 Week Three June 29-July 2, Mon-Thu Creative Writing in Nature Take your love of stories to the great outdoors with this nature-focused class. Get inspiration from your surroundings as we explore a variety of genres. Students will leave the class with a book of work, including poems, short stories, journaling, creative nonfiction, and scripts! Write with other young writers, every class will include a free write, in class sharing, and lots of writing games. Drama Come develop your craft, expand your knowledge, and have FUN. This class gives you skills for the stage and assists students in writing and performing both individually and as a group. Students will learn the craft of developing and exploring characters and the art of bringing the written word to life through performance. Girls Rock! Girls are awesome! During this camp we ll focus on building self-esteem, empowerment, and communication through games, art projects, science experiments, and even more games. We ll learn about some of our favorite women role models in history and our own lives, take field trips to observe gender in our society, and participate in a service project. Summer fun combines with summer empowerment for all girls! Red Cross Babysitting (Ages 11+) See Week 2 for class description. Class runs Monday through Wednesday. 1:00-3:00 pm $75 Spoken Word Poetry (Grades 6-9) Come develop your craft, expand your knowledge, and have FUN. This class defines spoken word, gives examples of the poetry and assists students in writing spoken word individually and as a group. Learn tips, tricks, and techniques for the young cook. We ll experiment with ingredients and techniques, learn manners and kitchen safety and of course enjoy eating our creations together. Bike Explorers (Grades 6-8) Get out and see your city under the power of your pedals! Daily trips will take you on adventures by bike. You will learn how to maintain and get the most out of your bike while seeing different parts and parks of Minneapolis and the surrounding area. We will provide lunches to take with you and our expert team of bike leaders. 9:00 am-3:30 pm $125 Cheerleading Camp Washburn Varsity Cheerleaders will lead our young cheerers in a week filled with fun and spirit. Spend the day learning cheers, chants, jumps and stunts with the current cheer team. Get spirit and build team and cooperation skills while practicing in a fun, safe, healthy environment! Drama (Grades 1-2) This camp is perfect for the young performer. This camp will help the young performer practice the skills to make them a stronger, more confident singer. Our team of instructors will help you sing in parts, practice harmony, and develop breath control. Step up and sing with a fun group! Urban Stewards (Grades 6-8) Get out and give back to your community! In this camp we will learn about the city around us: the natural world, the people, and the places that we care for. Through small service learning projects, we will give back to and know more about Minneapolis. Music Exploration (Grades 1-2) Be a part of the musical world around you in this interactive, exciting camp. As you explore music from around the world, you will also build skills in pattern forming, music reading, and creativity. This camp gives young musicians a chance to together sing and play percussion in an open, explorationbased environment. Young Chefs Cultural Cooking Experience the savory side of life! Through games and group activities, this camp will help students be able to be more quick on their feet and ready to respond to the world in an open, collaborative way. These games will not only be fun, but help youth flex their creative muscles as they build group scenes. Our classes fill quickly register today to ensure your spot! 5

Week Six July 20-23, Mon-Thu Abiyoyo Alive (Grades 1-2) Look out for a monster! Abiyoyo will stomp through our class as we sing, dance and write him away. We ll make our own instruments, create costumes, and think up spells. At the end of the week, we will share our own original play inspired by the books we ve read. Cardboard Creations What can we make out of cardboard? From creatures, to tools, to whole worlds the possibilities are endless! Cardboard is lightweight, inexpensive, and extremely versatile. You will be able to make projects together and lead the group in your own original designs that you can bring home and share. Choir (Grades 6-9) Get in tune with singing! This camp will help the young performer practice the skills to make them a stronger, more confident singer.
