Belo Horizonte (BH): Minas Gerais State s Capital The first planned city in the country of the republican period and projected to be the new capital of Minas Gerais was inaugurated on December 12 th, 1897. Belo Horizonte is the distribution center of a rich mining region and an industrial complex. There are also a large number of small enterprises in the technological sector, particularly in computing and biotechonology.

Belo Horizonte (BH): Minas Gerais State s Capital Minas Gerais, federal state with 20 millions inhabitants BH City Population: 2,5 millions inhabitants (12,5% of state population) Municipal GDP: R$ 43 billions (15% of State GDP) BH Metropolitan Area: 34 cities and 5,2 millions inhabitants (26% of MG population and 35% of State GDP)

BH, 2002 and 2012: modal split and growth in the trip volume Modal matrix of the trips, in % (excluding the pedestrian mode) Rede Viária de Belo Horizonte Transit Car Motorcycle Bicycle Others Year 2002: 2,7 millions of trips / day Year 2012: 4,1 millions of trips /day Transport Mode Grth. 2012/02 Transit - 8 % Car + 116 % Motorcycle + 649 % Bicycle + 7 % Others + 154 % Total Trips + 53 % Transit was the mode that had lost the most of its share in the trip matrix, falling between 2002 and 2012, from 57,6% to 34,6% car use rose from approximately 1/3; The bicycle share fell proportionally, despite the growth of the absolute number of trips between 2002 and 2012 (7%) A motorcycle, that had a share of 1,3% in 2002, ten years later holds a share of about 6% in the daily trip matrix of BH

Key challenges in relation to urban transport Problems and barriers (passenger): The inefficiency of public transportation (90% with traditional bus system); Growth of private car use: saturation of the traffic and congestion; Metropolitan disarticulation; Inadequate conditions for pedestrian movement; Radial structure of road system makes the city Central Area a place of traffic convergence. The main problems (freight): the increase in the quantity of trucks, vans and motorcycles in movement, especially in the Central Area; lack of logistics platforms within the Central Area of Belo Horizonte that would give support to the operations of storing products in retail shops; concentrating and reducing the movement of freight vehicles in the road system at inappropriate times.

Belo Horizonte has a Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) called PlanMob-BH and is trying to implementate TOD (Transit oriented Development) solutions. http://www.bhtrans.pbh.gov.br The SUMP (PlanMob-BH) proposes an Mobility Management Plan with partially successfully.

PlanMob-BH: Conceptual phase (2003 a 2007) and a preliminar diagnostic; Development (2008 a 2010): with assesment of LOGIT; Inovations: Management Mobility Plan before solutions Monitoring and participation of civil society Plano de Comunicação Diagnóstico e Prognóstico Preliminar Plano de Gerenciamento da Demanda Plano de Melhoria da Oferta Plano de Implantação, Gestão e Monitoramento National Context: Urban Mobility Law (Framework): in discussion between 2002 and 2012. FinancingÇ PAC World Cup: 1.6 billion reais (U$ 800 million) to two BRT corridorsç PAC Great Cities: 3 billion of reais (U$ 1.5 billion) to metro lines, buspaths and other projects.

MOVE BRTs corridors: a project of the BH Urban Mobility Masterplan The structural multimodal transit network, proposed by the PlanMob-BH, comprises medium and high capacity systems, operated by different transport technologies (BRT, Rail transit, LRT, etc.) with expected deployment by 2020.
