FISH BITES The Marlins open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 7:10 p.m. The homestand began with Miami dropping two of three to the Philadelphia Phillies. Tonight, the Fish will send RHP José Fernández to the mound for his fourth career start against the Dodgers, going 3-0 nd 2.88 ERA. He will be facing the Dodgers' LHP Clayton Kershaw, who in nine previous starts against the Marlins has gone 5-3 with a 2.40 ERA. This evening's national anthem will be performed by Brianna Alomar, while ceremonial first pitches will be thrown by Brian Denisar, former Montreal Expo Dennis Martinez, WSVN's Diana Diaz and musical artist Mase. Tonight is Nicaraguan Heritage Night, powered by South Florida Ford, and a portion of proceeds from each ticket will support the American Nicaraguan Foundation. Fans who purchase the package will receive a commemorative Nicaraguan Heritage Night hat. The Fish came into this homestand after returning from a 1-6 road trip to New York (1-3) and Cleveland (0-3), marking their worst road swing of seven-ormore games since going 1-6 against Colorado (1-2) and San Diego (0-4) from August 15-21, 2011. Upon conclusion of this series, Miami will hit the road again, going on a six-game trip to Atlanta (Sept. 12-14) and Philadelphia (Sept. 16-18). WEDNESDAY NIGHT VS. PHILADELPHIA The Marlins snapped a five-game slide with a 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. In the opening frame, Ichiro Suzuki connected for a one-out triple and scored an a RBI groundout by Martín Prado. The Fish extended their lead to 2-0 in the second on a sac fly off the bat of J.T. Realmuto. Miami scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, followed by a two-run seventh to finish the scoring. Miami tallied 13 hits in the game, two each from Dee Gordon, Ichiro, Marcell Ozuna and Realmuto. Andrew Cashner (5-11) earned his first win with Miami, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out nine over 5.1 innings. ELIAS SAYS... Ichiro Suzuki tripled and later scored in the first inning and that was all the offense that the Marlins needed in their 6-0 win over the Phillies on Wednesday. It was Ichiro's first extra-base hit in 43 first-inning at-bats this season. He had been one of three players with at least 40 at-bats in the first inning and no doubles, triples or homers in that frame this year, along with Jed Lowrie (65 at-bats) and Billy Burns (52). CENTURY 51 With his first inning triple on Wednesday, Ichiro Suzuki became the first National League player 42-or-older to record four-or-more triples in a season since Honus Wagner (9) in 1916, and just fifth overall (sixth time). The others were Joe Start (4) in 1885, Jim O'Rourke (5) in 1893 and Cap Anson (4 & 5) in 1894-95. The last Major League player 42-or-older with four-plus triples was Luke Appling (4) in 1950. - STATS LLC KID K/9 José Fernández has struck out a Marlins' single-season record 224 batters, which ranks second in the Majors to only Max Scherzer (243). Fernández s 12.57 strikeouts per 9.0 innings leads the Majors and would rank as the highest singleseason SO/9 ratio in Marlins history, besting the record he set in 2013 (9.75). If the season ended today, it would be the fourth-highest mark by a starting pitcher in Major League history (since 1913), behind Pedro Martinez in 1999 (13.22), Randy Johnson in 2001 (13.20) and Kerry Wood in 1998 (12.58). ROUGH STRETCH Over José Fernández's last seven starts, he has gone 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA (39.2 ip/20 er), while the Marlins have gone just 1-6. From July 28-August 18, the Marlins lost four straight games started by Fernandez, marking the longest losing streak in games started by José over his career. The Marlins had previously lost three consecutive Fernández starts from May 16-27, 2013. This follows a stretch where Miami went 12-3 over his 15 prior starts that saw him compile an 11-2 record and 2.11 ERA (98.0/23). PAIR OF ACES Tonight's match-up between José Fernández and Clayton Kershaw is pitting two of MLB's best starters against each other. Among active starters with at least 50 career starts, Kershaw leads baseball in ERA (2.39), opponents average (.205), WHIP (1.01), and opponents OPS (.566), while ranking second in winning percentage (.683) and ninth in strikeouts/9 (9.83). Fernández ranks second to Kershaw in ERA (2.62), opponents average (.211) and opponents OPS (.585), while ranking second in SO/9 (11.22), third in winning percentage (.673) and fourth in WHIP (1.07). Additionally, Kershaw and Fernández rank 1-2 in career ERA since 1920 (min. 50 starts). Hoyt Wilhelm ranks third (2.68), followed by Whitey Ford (2.71) and Sandy Koufax (2.71). - STATS LLC LEFT IS RIGHT The Marlins are now 21-10/.677 in games when their opponent starts a left-handed pitcher, the second-best mark in the Majors, behind the Pittsburgh Pirates (18-8/.692). Miami has won nine of its last 13 when a lefty starts against it, and handed Clayton Kershaw his first loss of the season back on April 26 at Dodger Stadium. As a team, the Fish are hitting.267 against lefties, the third-best mark in the NL, behind Arizona (.274) and Colorado (.270). Martín Prado leads all of baseball with a.435 (50x115) average against lefthanders and Marcell Ozuna is 17 th in the NL at.304 (34x112). AFTER THE BREAK Christian Yelich has seen his average dip following the All-Star break, however, his home run and RBI numbers have taken significant turns upward. He ranks second in the National League with 41 RBI after the break, behind Nolan Arenado (48), while his 11 home runs are tied for 11 th, behind Jedd Gyorko (19), Arenado (14), Ryan Schimpf (14), Yasmany Tomas (14), Ryan Braun (13), Freddie Freeman (13), Yasmani Grandal (12), Randal Grichuk (12), Matt Kemp (12), and Justin Turner (12). He has recorded 56 hits after the break, tied for 17 th, while teammate Martín Prado is tied with Charlie Blackmon and Yadier Molina for eighth with 60. It was the Marlins' first series sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and just the fifth overall. The sweep also marked the Marlins first series win at Dodger Stadium since 2010, when the Fish took two out of three from July 5-7. J.T. Realmuto has feasted on Dodgers pitching over his career to the tune of a.438 average (14x32). He has recorded at least one hit in each of his nine games played against Los Angeles. Giancarlo Stanton has also put up serious numbers against the Blue Crew, batting.320 (39x122) with 13 home runs and 31 RBI in 33 career games. In his last eight games against the Dodgers at Marlins Park, Stanton has hit.406 (13x32) with four home runs and seven RBI. Don Mattingly has won his first four games as manager against the Dodgers, doing something only six other managers have accomplished since 1958. 16 JOSÉ FERNÁNDEZ PITCHER HT / WT 6 3 / 243 B / T R / R José Fernández is making his 27 th start of 2016, his 15 th at Marlins Park. He is 10-2 with a 1.91 ERA (89.2 ip/19 er) at home this season. He is making his second start vs. the Dodgers this season, first at home. He earned his second win of the season in Los Angeles on April 28 when he tossed 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out eight. In his career, he is 3-0 with a 2.88 ERA (25.0/8) vs. the Dodgers. He has made two starts against them at home, going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (13.0/3). Earned his 13 th win of the season in his last home start on August 24 vs. the Royals, setting a new single-season career high for wins. He went 7.0 shutout innings, allowing six hits and two walks, while striking out nine. The nine strikeouts in that start gave him a total of 213 this season, a new Franchise single-season record. He surpassed Ryan Dempster, who had 209 in 2000. Leads the Majors with 12.57 strikeouts per 9.0 innings this season. If the season ended today, that would mark the fourth-highest rate by a starting pitcher since 1913, behind Pedro Martinez in 1999 (13.22), Randy Johnson in 2001 (13.20) and Kerry Wood in 1998 (12.58). In 40 career home starts, Fernández is 27-2 with a 1.57 ERA (257.1/45). According to Elias, his home ERA over his first 40 home starts is the lowest since 1920. Suffered the loss in his last start, September 3 at Cleveland. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on a career-high 12 hits (one home run) and two walks, while striking out five. It was only the second time in his career allowing double-digit hits (last, 11 hits on October 1, 2015 @ TB). Did not factor in the decision on August 29 at New York-NL. He shutout the Mets over 6.0 innings, giving up three hits and four walks (one intentional) and striking out six in the Marlins eventual 10-inning loss. It was his second time this season, and third in his career, shutting out the Mets. The three career shutout outings are tied for his most vs. any opponent (also, Atlanta and San Diego).
